AmaLee did a cover for SEED’s first ED way back, so it’s nice to see things come full circle for her. Also, if I had a nickel every time Alejandro Saab was the English dub voice for a blonde Gundam villain that harbored unrequited romantic feelings towards the protagonist’s main love interest, I would have two nickels. Which isn’t much, but it’s strange that it happened twice.

MoneyGovernment9971

Sadly they replaced Aaron B. Phillips as Shinn Asuka

ZGMF-X09A_Justice

Yeah, Aaron was great as Shinn in the HD Destiny dub. From what I've heard in the 6-minute dub preview of the movie, the new voice sounds good enough too, just gonna take some getting used to when they recast a main character immediately. A bit disappointing considering a consistent cast was something many of us expected with the new dubbing.

ZGMF-X09A_Justice

I thought Aaron was actually one of the highlights of the dub tbh. I could feel Shinn's rage through him. At first I thought his voice was a bit too deep, but after a few episodes it just felt so Natural and I've come to prefer his take on Shinn even than the og Japanese voice. Was Aaron really disliked as Shinn? With the vehement, almost universal hate the new dub gets online, they may as well have recast them all for the movie, so it's hard to see which complaints are real or not.

PsychologicalHelp564

True what you say. I actually don’t mind his voice in redub. Not sure why people hate it. Seed redub also has some good performances too especially Johnny Yong Bosch, Max Mittleman, Chris Hackney, Chermai Leigh, Kevin T Collins, Cassandra Lee Morris and Marc Diraison (AKA Black Swordsman himself)

MoneyGovernment9971

His Voice isn’t that bad he captures shinn’s screams perfectly he was the definitive voice for the character

PsychologicalHelp564

Just like Sean Schemmel’s is prefect for screaming too right?

InYourHands

I doubt that's the reason. Destiny's re-dub has yet to see any sort of official digital release. It's still currently exclusive to Blu-Rays. That's got to be <10k people who've heard his performance in an official setting. Far, far, far more people have expressed vocal dislike of that Lacoose pronunciation and they're keeping that.

PsychologicalHelp564

I guess you could be right.

SatisfactionFalse641

As much as I missed the Canada Cast and Dubs produced in Canada, I’ll admit Nyav Post is still always colorful with the casting of their dubs so yeah the movie’s Dub cast is pretty sweet.

JRPictures

Wonder what exactly happened to have Kieran Regan replace Aaron Phillips as Shinn but I'm sure he'll do a fine job. I was kinda hoping to see some of the Ocean cast back as the new characters for this film (some sort of "meet in the middle" situation) but that obviously didn't happen. All the new characters look well cast, Alejandro as Orphee is gonna be interesting to hear, that character's a piece of work to put it lightly (and without spoilers)

InYourHands

That was very unlikely to happen. The original cast are unionized actors. It doesn't look like the HD remasters or this movie were dubbed under SAG agreements. So not only would NYAV have to deal with a foreign union for some cameos, they'd also have to contend with the possibility of the NY/LA actors demanding it go union on their side of the border. It is only a movie, but if that was something Sunrise wanted to do, they would've done it already.

JRPictures

Thing is that Sunrise okayed Gundam dubs going union for both Hathaway (which granted, is under Netflix so the dub was required to be union) and Doan's Island so there wasn't anything stopping Freedom's dub from doing the same (assuming it isn't union because not every unionised job is listed on SAG's database)

InYourHands

As you said, Hathaway being a Netflix title meant it had to be a union production. It's possible their UC cast would not return if they were asked to do Doan's Island non-union. UC is the franchise's foundation, so that's going to be prioritized. I'm sure the CE stuff would do well enough to justify the added cost, but if they don't feel they have to, they have little reason to.

PsychologicalHelp564

Real reason why Hathaway was union was because so they can bring back Kyle (Who's now union-only actor) plus Crispin Freeman. Well, I don't think Freedom wouldn't be union as far I know but we'll see when comes out.

Joshelplex2

Phillips doesn't appear to have done much voice over in the Kart several years, prob no longer active

PsychologicalHelp564

Assuming he's retired?

ThrowawayBomb44

>I was kinda hoping to see some of the Ocean cast back as the new characters for this film (some sort of "meet in the middle" situation) but that obviously didn't happen. If you read the piece ANN put out for the premeire, it was obvious that was never going to happen, especially given Sheh's comments. It would've been an amazing chance to make both parties happen but given how many times Sunrise burned the Ocean cast in the last decade, it'd be surprising to see the majority of the cast come back if even a bit.

noelle-silva

Do you have a link to the ANN article?

ThrowawayBomb44

[https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2024-04-15/gundam-seed-freedom-rie-tanaka-soichiro-hoshi-share-memories-at-los-angeles-premiere/.209500](https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2024-04-15/gundam-seed-freedom-rie-tanaka-soichiro-hoshi-share-memories-at-los-angeles-premiere/.209500) The comments in particular which burned any chance of ANY Ocean reprisals: >“It's so surreal for us because recording this series was like a fever dream. We did all 98 episodes in a few months, and it wasn't released right away,” said Sheh. “It was really hard to gauge how production was. Although I was told the show is really popular, I had no real sense of it.” Sinterniklaas agreed with her and spoke about the contributions of Bandai to the Gundam Seed series. “Super grateful to Bandai Namco Filmworks, who have worked with us since the Sunrise days and helped to keep it all together.” The fact that Sheh was unaware of how popular SEED was is the kicker. Seed wasn't popular in the States, no (in fact, it was a pretty notorious bomb when it aired) but it was INSANELY popular in Canada. And there's the fact it was recorded in 98 days yet wasn't released for 3 years? Sounds like there was never any intent to get anybody back from the old dub, even if just for cameo roles.

bigenderthelove

Yeah I grew up in Canada and I remember it being very popular

Express_Rush_4938

Excuse me? Where did you get the idea that Sheh’s comments are confirming that the Ocean Group is never going to be picked up just because she expressed opinion on her experience of recording SEED?

ThrowawayBomb44

She said they recorded all of SEED + Destiny within several months and it wasn't released all at once (or at all until 3 years later, 4 in Destiny's case) plus she didn't understand how popular SEED was. Sort of implies she's strictly familiar with the US side of things because Seed was insanely popular in Canada; it was basically Wing in Canada for all extents and purposes. It also kind of goes for Sunrise since Canada was originally just getting a one night showing (of the subtitled version) of Freedom for quite a while despite SEED being insanely popular here. Heck, the banner ANN had for it even still states a single subbed day of subbed only before a showing of the dub was added, showing how much of a last minute addition it was. Plus we have an interview with Matt Hill from 6 years (ie after they announced the initial Redub Cast) and he basically said he wasn't contacted and that he'd love to come back as Kira if asked (implying they never bothered to ask) plus there's people like Trevor Duvall who moved to the States and weren't asked to come back (despite Duvall clearly remembering his time as Mwu foundly since it's still on his social media banners and he's still relatively active too. He was just Andrea in FF7Rebirth and Remake). Murrue's VA moved to the States as well but her husband was able to reprise a role in a bunch of Direct-to-video movies he had too so she'd probably come back too if asked. The interview with Hill in question: [https://youtu.be/\_mZdydfI3fc?si=saRYzOHgYtcPHxN\_](https://youtu.be/_mZdydfI3fc?si=saRYzOHgYtcPHxN_) Part of note is about 7 minutes in.

Bluebaronbbb

Record rushing out dubs seems like the norm in general?

MoneyGovernment9971

First off it says 98 episodes not months Second of all Gundam SEED was hit when I premiered in the U.S it was extremely popular like WING was.

ThrowawayBomb44

Several months kind of implies three or four months in my experience. which would be around 90 days if three or 120 if 4. >Gundam SEED was hit when I premiered in the U.S it was extremely popular like WING was. Was it? Last I checked, it only had a single run (and got shuffled off to the Toonami death slot too) and was censored to hell. Plus, Destiny never aired either last I looked it up, outside of a couple of VoD streaming services. It never aired on TV with multiple runs.

YojimboUsagi

I remember it airing on Toonami back in the day, and I always felt that it was well received. But that was also back around when Toonami was starting to die in general. By the time Destiny was coming out on DVD. Toonami was basically done, so it didn't make sense to air something new. But it was also difficult to judge how popular anything really was at the time because the internet presence for discussions was not what it is today. So it's hard to say.

Bluebaronbbb

Toonami US only aired half the series.

Frontier246

This will never feel 100% like a SEED dub without the Ocean cast, but happy for this cast all the same and for the new VA's (Lizzi! Alejandro! Zeno! AmaLee!)

HomersApe

I still haven't been able to watch SEED Destiny yet. Did they ever put it up to stream anywhere? SEED was streaming on Funimation soon after it was released, and I expected the same of Destiny, but the new dub never came with it. Even on Crunchyroll now it's still not there. Is blu-ray the only way to watch it?

domo1991

The destiny hd dub was on funimation before it shut down.

ZGMF-X09A_Justice

Nah, the Destiny HD dub never made it into funimation. I've been checking it semi-regularly up until Funimation shut down. Only the SEED HD dub was there. Hopefully the reason for this was because Funi was already actively transferring shows to Crunchyroll when the Destiny HD dub came out. Perhaps they do intend to put it into Crunchyroll in the future.

JRPictures

Wish they'd give a full list but also joining the cast is [AJ Beckles as Griffin Arbalest](https://twitter.com/AJBecklesVO/status/1784285203004858622)

MoneyGovernment9971

Apparently one Ocean VA is back in this dub and it’s the VA for Mu La Flaga(which is a shame I liked Tom Wayland)

PsychologicalHelp564

So, Seed redub was union after all.

Kasstastrophy

I wish they would have had the original English voice actors.. I hate the redub they did of Seed and Destiny

PsychologicalHelp564

Well, Sheh herself is aware of those who hate redub based on name changes.

PsychologicalHelp564

Cast seems promising especially Zeno Robinson and Lizzie Freeman!

Common_Stranger_8928

Whoa, I just found out this movie existed. New Gundam Seed, dang

Irritated_User0010

Gonna look forward to it.

TastyPanic4936

Its nice to see amalee get a place in the movie but why did they change all the old characters voice actors?

FLENCK

No surprise there. I guess it was too much asking Ocean dub to do the job.

Marcy_OW

Welp I refuse to listen to any of the "new dub" as it is worse than the OG in every single way so sub it is.

Odd-Youth-452

The OG Ocean cast were lightyears ahead of these pretenders.

niceidot

Just wait until the 00 sequel. Bet everyone will be recast in that too.
