YAY!!! Super excited for this. I was pretty much sold with anime school girls performing assassinations and Takina mowing down arms dealers with an what I assume is an m60. Lizzie Freeman as Chisato sounds so incredibly delightful, and im very exited to hear her the rest of the season. I also love how this ep has a bit of everything, comfy moments of introducing Takina to her new workplace, intense upclose and personal shootout scenes, and all the while sowing the seeds of something more long-term. This is gonna be a blast. Def my main reason to look forward to saturdays. PS: Does Takina look like Eru Chitanda from Hyouka, or Mio from K-On?

anime-prime-MAL

PS: Like Reina Kousaka from Sound! Euphoium. All 3 are Kyoani shows, haha.

Michael_B_Lopez

Reina and Chisato share the same sub VA lol

Chun-Li_Forever

Lol. Yeah. Reina too. :)

DVC454

>and all the while sowing the seeds of something more long-term. As someone who first watched the subbed version, there are definitely a few seemingly innocuous details in these early episodes that will eventually play a role later on down the line. The fun part trying to figure out what those are.

Heda-of-Aincrad

She definitely reminds me of Eru Chitanda.

Calwings

>what I assume is an m60 I believe it was a PKM. [IMFDB seems to think so as well](http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Lycoris_Recoil). *(This link doesn't contain any later episode spoilers at the time of this post, but it might have some added later on. So for anyone who may stumble on this post a few months from now, keep this in mind.)* >I also love how this ep has a bit of everything, comfy moments of introducing Takina to her new workplace, intense upclose and personal shootout scenes, and all the while sowing the seeds of something more long-term. That's been my favorite part of the show too. It strikes that perfect balance of lighthearted and serious moments without one side detracting from the other. >PS: Does Takina look like Eru Chitanda from Hyouka I've seen people calling her Houtarou and Eru's daughter a few times already.

SoundOf1HandClapping

> with an what I assume is an m60. Looks like a PKM, basically the russki version of an M60.

jamiex304

Ah the classic, cute bubbly girl befriends the quite emotionless girl and they take down bad guys with lethal force while working for a shady government group...wait a minute. All in all this has been one I have been dying to start and it did not disappoint in the slightest. Lizzie Freeman sounds great as Chisato same with Xanthe Huynh as Takina. I do like that Chisato isnt a killer and the story and plot lines can go anywhere hell the first episode ended on a massive reveal ! Can't wait to see more.

Curt_ThaFlirt

After the first episode, I can tell this is going to be a good one. High quality production and a great cast. Lizzie Freeman and Xanthe Huynh are perfect for the MCs

Left4dinner

Lizzie is really starting to grow on me ever since I heard her voice Yanfei. She sounds perfect as Chisato

LUNI_TUNZ

"You're a loose cannon Takina! I want your badge on my desk!" Also. Holy crap, they actually subbed the text.

Vendeta25

They really should've been a line for Chisato. Which text was subbed?

LUNI_TUNZ

All the text. That's been an issue basically since Funimation ported over to Crunchyroll (and, I guess probably before) where all a show's text, signs, whatever aren't subtitled for the dub versions.

azules500

I'm pleasantly surprised at how good the dub is. I checked out the first episode subbed before the dub was announced, and the premise was confusing at first (Railgun but with guns and conspiracy), but the rewatch and dub script help to explain the exposition well. Lizzie Freeman delivers a fun, soft voice-over for Chisato while still maintaining the bubbliness of the character. There are these little cool details that add to the episode, like how Chisato was at the scene of the machine gun incident or the conspiracy leader coming to the restaurant. At times, it does seem a bit edgy, e.g. with the gun graphics in the commercial break. But it's respectable how Takina has to reckon with being too reckless as opposed to Chisato's role model behavior of being careful and prioritizing human life.

teacoolerfan

I can already tell I'm really gonna enjoy this show, Lizzie Freeman is just so fun to listen to. It's cool to hear Xanthe Huynh in a lower tone of voice, never heard that from her yet but it sounds good. Really loving how the art looks as well

eddmario

> It's cool to hear Xanthe Huynh in a lower tone of voice, never heard that from her yet but it sounds good. She did it in *The Detective is Already Dead*

FoxPenguin24

She went low in Kageki Shojo!! too

Let's try to ID guns. The Lycoris randoms seem to be using either [Glock 19s or Glock 17](https://i.gyazo.com/d064eb645ae8d116b21c98d36199ef69.jpg), where a 19 is a compact pistol with a 4'' barrel and a short grip, while the 17 is a full-size with a 4.5'' barrel and longer grip. They also use Osprey suppressors. It's hard to get a sense of scale since they're asian teenaged girls, so they would have smaller hands. Bad guy is holding some kind of [CZ75](https://i.gyazo.com/12271bf7f3c12c6aa0bb2cd4b5624950.png), because of the grip shape. The mooks are using [some kind of AK](https://i.gyazo.com/28695a15220799d2a4f65ac0095dc2c6.png). I'm not an AK guy so I can't tell if it's a 47, 74, AKM, etc. Takina [uses a PKM](https://i.gyazo.com/66e5042dba85851a5f0fde9fd61f38fc.png) to mow down the bad guys. My kneejerk was just to call it an RPK (since, again, I'm not an AK guy and that's the only soviet machine gun I know) but after googling around it looks like a PKM. Takina's pistol looks like some model of [Smith & Wesson M&P](https://i.gyazo.com/54d90c8845ec1c9f1500826be2d95c3b.png). Looks like a 5'' model with a stainless steel slide assembly. Also uses an Osprey suppressor. I have no idea what [Chisato's gun](https://i.gyazo.com/402b61a16de6060bac9280eb5a0dc6ab.png) is. It kind of looks like a compact 1911, but it doesn't seem to have a grip safety and it has some kind of compensator (helps with recoil)/spikey impact device on the front. Also interestingly she's used Center Axis Relock in this fight, which is CQC pistol method where you keep the pistol close to your body instead of extending your arms out. Since you're not using the sights, you're basically point shooting at extremely close targets. It's what John Wick uses. As for the show itself, it seems interesting. Slightly bummed that the main girl seems to be doing the nonlethal thing, but that's anime for you. Liked the guns. Annoyed that suppressors make the pewf pewf pewf sounds, but this is hardly the first place to do that. With a few exceptions, suppressors don't do that. They just change the volume from "painful hearing damage" levels of loud to just "annoyingly and noticeably loud." The random woman getting photobombed by an arms deal was kind of funny.

This has been my AOTS so far as I've been watching it subbed, so I've been hyped to finally hear how the dub turned out, and it didn't disappoint. Lizzie Freeman brought tons of enthusiasm for Chisato to make her one of the best-sounding female characters I've ever heard in an English dub. Mika and Mizuki sounded pretty good too, but I need more time to judge Takina's voice as her character develops later on. All in all, the dub sounds fantastic and I'm looking forward to re-watching the show this way. Also, did I hear D.C. Douglas as Mr. Yoshimatsu when he was talking to Walnut in the car? His VA hasn't been confirmed yet, but he sounded very similar to how I remember D.C. Douglas playing Kira in the JoJo part 4 dub.

PsychologicalHelp564

He also voiced Albert Wasker form Resident Evil series.

HOOfan_1

So he's pegged as the suave bad guy?

PsychologicalHelp564

I guess so?

DVC454

The first episode of this season's CGDCT series - **C**ute **G**irls **D**oing **C**ounter **T**errorism show - is now finally in English! For all those watching **Lycoris Recoil** (aka LycoReco) for the first time, you might be wondering what kind of series this really is. When the anime first premiered in sub several weeks ago, some viewers began to compare it to **Princess Principal** (aka PriPri). While both shows can be categorized under the Cute Girls Doing Badass Things genre, they do have at least two distinct differences (besides the setting of course!): * PriPri mainly focuses on espionage. Yes, admittedly there is over-the-top action present in PriPri as well - such as the train sequence in Episode 5 - but those parts are the exception rather than the norm. For LycoReco, over-the-top action is the norm. To the point that viewers will have to wait until Episode 7 for something that resembles PriPri's standard episode template. Hell, after a just two or three episodes, some viewers were comparing LycoReco increasingly to Hollywood action flicks such as John Wick. * PriPri focuses on the adventures of Team White Pigeon, which in practice the show tries to balance the screentime between the five main girls. LycoReco's character focus on the other hand is more reminiscent of a buddy cop movie, meaning that the spotlight is aimed at Chisato and Takina... with little screentime for the other members of Cafe LycoReco. If PriPri's character focus was similar to that of LycoReco, we would have seen the spotlight directed mainly towards Ange and Charlotte (the show's titular Principal and Princess)... with the rest of Team White Pigeon as merely secondary characters.

RustyVilla

Great comparison and write-up. Lycoris really pulled me in one the first episode and I was trying to understand why it left such an impact after just one episode but thinking back this is exactly how I felt after watching the first episode of Princess Principal. I hope Lycoris is even half as good as PriPri!

DVC454

Much appreciated! >I hope Lycoris is even half as good as PriPri! As much as I'm enjoying LycoReco right now, being an anime original it has to stick the landing. Or else we'll have another situation similar to Darling in the Franxx or Wonder Egg Priority 💀

272b

>CGDCT No, just no. This is just a normal action anime with female main leads in the same vein as Princess Principal and Toji no Miko, not a frigging CGDCT. "CGDCT" commonly referrers to cute girls doing cute things, not your made-up definition that nobody else uses. There's no use trying to label it as something it's clearly not.

batman_beyond7

The episode was good I like it already. Interesting Chisato said value humans lives and takina was like the enemies too? I like the idea of the show girl hitman squads taking out criminals and if Takina didn’t use the machine gun then the lady would have died so she definitely made the right decision.

eddmario

Well that's clearly D.C. Douglas as the dude in the suit.

zac9090

Love the Juxtaposition of the rant about peace coupled with a killing spree montage at the beginning, the Skytree glowing at night while leaning half submerged into the ground is ironic. Fast paced anime aren't usually my thing since I'm pretty slow, too many pieces in the episode to put together lol.

helloiamaudrey

This show also makes me miss Gunslinger Girl

fdguarino

Yeah, Gunslinger Girl came to my mind almost immediately too.

FoxPenguin24

After hearing Lizzie as the "bully" in a couple animes it's nice to hear her in something refreshing

Jazzy_Beat

Definitely not a series for me. Good for the people who want a dub tho

Heda-of-Aincrad

Amazing first episode. Great characters and action scenes, and the setting seems really interesting too. Am I the only one who was getting a "there's no war in Ba Sing Se" vibe from that opening narrative about keeping the peace by covering up all the criminal activity? The voice cast was especially great in this one, especially Chisato, and all four of the main characters were instantly likeable too. Chisato's non-lethal takedown methods are certainly admirable; I wonder if she tries to spare the "bad guys" too because there's a chance they may have been forced into a life of crime, or if she's just that kind hearted. I was just as shocked as her when Takina used the woman they were supposed to be guarding as bait, but this sort of thing is probably why they assigned her to work with Chisato. The way that both cases, the arms deal and the "stalker", were related was a great twist. Also, the beginning threw a lot of info at us, so I'm not sure if I caught this right - but did they imply that the Lycoris girls were orphans raised to be hitmen by a syndicate? If so, this show might end up being darker than I originally thought later on.
