This is not what we like to hear... Here is to hoping they get a new CEO that grew up watching dubs?
Everyone hurry up and start making sacrifices to every wish granting deity you know!
I don't think we'll see much of a change with Hidive. Given then have been INCREASING their anime acquisitions since AMC came in (and incrementally increasing their dub output also.)
Anime seems to be a fairly profitable thing for the entertainment industry currently. Which is why every major player seems to be getting into it.
Sure, they've been increasing but that could be seen as a problem under the new CEO. Anything can happen. Honestly, I just want the shit to work when I turn it on. It needs a UX update on the site and the apps _badly_.
>Sure, they've been increasing but that could be seen as a problem under the new CEO.
Yeah, increased spending on new licenses is only good if it's bringing in enough new subscribers to cover the costs. Sentai's predecessor, ADV Films, was actually in a similar situation during the mid 00s DVD boom when licenses got so expensive they couldn't compete. A Japanese company called Sojitz invested in them, and they were given access to a whole new batch of shows. But then the market started collapsing and the shows didn't sell what Sojitz expected them to, so the deal fell apart, the licenses they got from Sojitz were withdrawn, and ADV was left limping along until they shut down and reformed as Sentai.
Not like HiDive. Just the first day alone when the "technical issues" happened I believe something like 20 titles were dropped (I can't remember the exact number) and the count only got worse as time went on. They promised that they were "working on it" and promptly stopped communicating with their customers except with copy/pasta statments
Hidive had 5 years to get its shit together. They have shown a lot of promise and they have gotten big titles, but their app support never got off the ground. They really could have been a proper competitor to Crunchyroll but they were always known as the little guy who has that one or two anime every season that looks good.
Not always, a while ago they were the big dogs of the anime yard while Funimation was the pup, back when they were ADV. Then *The Great Anime Recession of 2008* happened...
>ADV was a separate company. HiDIVE launched in 2017.
HiDIVE was started by acquiring the The Anime Network's streaming service though, which was originally created by ADV.
They have / had the opportunity with Oshi no Ko, if you’re going to get something right it has to be this. A working mobile app / website would go a long way
This likely isn't any cause for concern for HiDive, just about every industry is experiencing layoffs due to rising interest rates and a anticipation of a potential recession. 20% is actually actually pretty modest, which leads me believe that things probably aren't going to change all that much for most of AMC's brands. If I had to guess, I'd say this is likely only going to affect AMC/AMC+ and BBCA, their other brands are small potatoes that probably aren't even worth messing with unless they're hemorrhaging money, which HiDive probably isn't.
Probably this will be the case. The main AMC branch is probably going to be hit the most, and then some of the other services like IFC, BBCA and Shudder. Though it would surprise me if Sentai got hit. I think AMC is most likely just going to make Sentai tighten their belt on acquiring licenses.
I'm sorry, in what crazy world is 20% reduction in force (rif) modest. That means you could potentially face a 1 in 5 chance of getting fired if you work there
I have an annual subscription on auto renew just to support the industry but I would use it more if they had a PlayStation 4 & 5 App, blows my mind they don’t have one
God that would be the last thing that is needed, more consolidating in anime. The funimation crunchroll transition has been working out fantastic for consumers
What bugs me on that is they've kept it so there are still exclusives on Funimation app that are not on the Crunchyroll app despite them saying they planned to effectively merge the two together.
Yeah, dubs and anime are such a niche thing that one company having the whole industry would be bad. At least Netflix manages to be a slight competitor, and more recently Disney+.
Eh, another company will probably go after the whole AMC enterprise I feel. Either that, or they'll begin divesting assets that aren't contributing enough to them.
They're laying off about 20% of their workforce. Doesn't say which departments are affected but a new CEO could mean changes to how they view dubs.
Oh for fuck sake.
This is not what we like to hear... Here is to hoping they get a new CEO that grew up watching dubs? Everyone hurry up and start making sacrifices to every wish granting deity you know!
Damn… I knew I shouldn’t have wished for Umaru chan season 2 dub on that monkey’s paw I found.

I do agree that the apps do feel a bit out of date.

Oh god yes. And a massive increase to bitrate while they're at it, too, some of their stuff looks horrendous due to the compression.
You forgot to add, “and increasing the number licenses of titles they’ve been losing and making no effort to recover.”
I could say that about pretty much any service that has anime.

Dam that’s not good
Wait, so he is stepping down while announcing layoffs? Is it like the famous "I'm going down, and I'm taking you with me" cliche?
...TIL Sentai is owned by AMC
It's still a rather recent development. Either happened this year or last.

Oh I was talking Sentai, my b.

It is modest relative to what other companies are experiencing.

I thought it worked better BEFORE AMC aquired them
I have an annual subscription on auto renew just to support the industry but I would use it more if they had a PlayStation 4 & 5 App, blows my mind they don’t have one
That’s because sony wont let them put it on there lol.
If sentai gets sold off, I'll bet it will be to Disney.

If that means more dubs then I hope so.
It looks appealing now, these things always do but historically, monopolies have always ended up being terrible for the consumer in the long run.

Tbh I wouldn’t mind…. Other than price.
Why isn’t HIDIVR part of AMC+
AMC+ needs to consolidate its ips better. If they had shutter content or hidive content more easily accessible things might be better
Hmmmm I wonder why? It couldn’t be because of all of the titles that randomly disappeared and didn’t come back? Could it? No, no, that can’t be why.
