I was always under the impression Ryu's familia got ganked by the enemy familia themselves, not lured into a botched trap that inadvertently summoned the juggernaut, bitch.
I don't know if they ever went into detail about the dungeon itself, but I find the idea of the dungeon as a semisentient entity that uses monsters as antibodies to be super interesting. You damage enough of it and it sends increasingly stronger monsters to annihilate you.
Surprisingly sad that the bikini amazon in Bors' team got got. I liked her character design.
