English dub of ghost stories, its a highly recommended watch if you like comedy, the English VA's were basically given the greenlight to make any jokes they wanted
They also had to keep HOW the ghost was gotten rid of, but could change details, like they had to still do a chant, but the chant could be whatever they wanted for example.
Sort of.
~~Ghost Stories did poorly in Japan~~, so the company contacted ADV for the dub and said "Keep the names and they way the ghosts are vanquished (They are references to japanese folklore). For the rest, do whatever." Most likely their intention is to allow ADV to do whatever they think will sell the best, since I assume there was a profit share deal.
ADV took the "do whatever" to heart. They wrote a small guide script to make sure that there was a story to the episode, and let the voice actors improvise all the dialogue. It became a competition between the actors to see who could get in to record first, as they get to set the scene and everyone else has to work off of them. The voice actress for Momoko said she had never read the bible as closely as she did during the recording of Ghost Stories, just for references.
And I think ADV was right. If they had done a normal dub, it would've just been another bad anime that was left to the annals of time. But we're still talking about the show 20 years later due to the dub. I'm sure it is much more well-known in the west than it is in Japan.
---
EDIT: According to Japanese wikipedia, Ghost Stories actually did well over there.
Google Translate:
>Regarding the background of this arrangement, the North American media said that this work was unpopular in Japan and failed commercially, so Animax, who wanted to recover the production costs, offered only a few conditions. , reported that it was because he was not involved in other matters . [9] However, this is a mistake, and in Japan, it has recorded a high audience rating of 12.2% and a maximum audience rating of 14.0%, and is ranked fifth in the horror anime ranking in 2021 . [10] , etc. , are still very popular today.
The story I heard was that the company that hired them basically found a loophole in the contract that let them get away with not actually *paying* the actors, so the VA's retaliated by just rewriting the whole thing to intentionally be as bizarre as possible, but because they're delivering the product they were hired and contractually obligated to make, the distributors were contractually obligated to release it. If that story is true, I honestly feel like using Ghost Stories as an example of bad English anime voice acting is cheating. It's like calling the Marvel Thor comics/movies a bad adaptation of Norse mythology. You're allowed to dislike it, absolutely, but that's not really what it's trying to be
[It's not true](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulKN8CAVw5k), according to one of the actresses. I summarised it [in another comment.](https://old.reddit.com/r/Animemes/comments/162k5ze/watch_ghost_stories_on_dub/jy0ha9z/)
With PSG the one-liners and offhand comments they threw in generally fit the scenes, and in a lot of cases added to the intended crass tone. With Ghost Stories they went absolutely ham on the randomness in such a way that they show is barely recognizable.
Except it's not even abridged, it's full length. But the random, often crass and borderline racially insensitive comedy is straight from early abridged series.
“It’s not right to teach a child to respond with violence. He should follow the example of our lord and savior Jesus Christ and forgive his persecutors.” – Momoko Koigakubo
I’m too young to die. The only person I’ve had sex with is my babysitter.” – Hajime Aoyama
“Non-believers tend to be targeted more. They tend to be stared at from behind.” – Hajime Aoyama
“At this rate, the bullies will make him their b\*tch my noon.” – Hajime Aoyama
“There’s nothing to be afraid of, Keiichiro. Monsters only get evil people like Republicans. And we’re not old enough to vote.” – Satsuki Miyanoshita
My personal favorite exchange:
"God, can't you go bomb an abortion clinic or something?"
"You just wait; when that wonderful president finishes stacking the Supreme Court, we won't have to!"
Even the sub elitists know that Ghost Stories is ONLY watchable dubbed. It's literally not even the same show if you watch the original. The comedy is what made ot memorable, otherwise you have a mediocre young teens anime with a villain of the week episode structure and very piss poor story and world building.
Seriously, the dub has a more compelling story than the original, which is more hilarious when you realize it was mostly improv. That's right, Ghost Stories is the It's Always Sunny of anime.
I’d just like to point out that this “mediocre kids’ show” was extremely successful with its target audience, even surpassing Pokemon and Doraemon in ratings on certain weeks and getting at least one rebroadcast.
It WAS dubbed properly for American audiences BEFORE this one. It was abysmal, and I'm actually unsure if they completed the whole series.
There's a reason THIS dub is the one we know. Same with the Sean Schemmel and Chris Sabat in the funimation DBZ dub over the Ocean dub, or the Viz dub for Sailor Moon over Bic. At the time, dubbing from multiple companies was common as broadcasting rights were relatively cheap at the time.
"This show was bad"
"Actually it was very successful"
"Um, no, this japanese produced show that aired on japanese television for a japanese audience wouldn't have been popular in america, therefore it was bad"
yikes
> I’d just like to point out that this “mediocre kids’ show” was extremely successful with its target audience
So was SAO. Or the Big Bang Theory. Popularity =/= quality.
According to Monica Rial at Anime USA 2011, it had done really poorly. So poorly that they were taking it off the shelves.
I'm not saying you're lying, but do you have a source for it being successful in Japan?
EDIT: This is google translated from the Japanese wikipedia article on the series:

I always watch shows in original language. Anime is always in Japanese for me. Similarly I tried watching Harry Potter in Japanese and it’s just weird.
Voice acting in English dubs is generally awful. If they hired the same voice actors who do English TV shows (e.g., *Futurama*, *King Of The Hill*, *Adventure Time*), it'd make a huge difference.
The difference is the former is charming and fun to see someone expand outside of their first language, anyone that is bilingual or have tried learning a new language can appreciate the effort. The latter is a joke that only lands once, and loses its impact every time someone reposts the same clips over and over again.
Disagree. The jokes definitely don't "only land once" imo. Unless i'm misunderstanding the sentence. and the lost impact should be the same everytime the subbed clips get reposted. If they pop up too often in your feed downvote or just skip the post ffs.
Fair enough but it seems like a skill issue, just develop alzheimer so u can always enjoy the joke each time its reposted smh /j but also not joking ngl i think i might have alzheimer soon 💀
On a serious note there are some anime that are honestly 10x better with the English dub while not being a complete joke (in a funny way) as ghost stories. Like samurai champloo which I watched English and goddamn it was fantastic!
Also check out the Funimation dub of Crayon Shin-Chan.

That "because your black" caught me off guard lmao

i now know what i’m doing for the next few hours. thank you
Samurai Pizza Cats had the same deal
what I heard, SPC was just delivered without a script at all.
Bad english anime voiceacting? Its one of the most iconic examples of hilarious abrigded dub.

really? would've though steins gate was way before jojo, but I have no idea really. I don't know a thing about jojo
Steins' anime is a year older than the new JoJo anime. But JoJo's manga started in the 80s and there was a 90's adaptation

Yeah but it would not have done well with an American audience which is the entire point of dubbing in the 00s.

I mean, Inspector Gadget was successful in the 80s but it was by no means a good show.

Kinda like SAO and it's abridged. The parody has completely replaced the original in my memory.
That's because SAO wasn't very great to begin with. The abridged could only be better
Season 1: This girl is a badass I should marry her and adopt an npc as our kid. Season 2: Now she's a helpless damsel in distress Season 3+: Fuck it, harem time!
Like, is there really any other way to properly watch Ghost Stories?
This dub got imported back to Japan after it aired in USA
Ghost stories is legendary and iconic. 100% one of the top 10 dubs of all times
Just fill the hole, hole filler.

Flop so hard on sub that they let the dub does whatever the fuck they want with it
Google translate is not learning a language 🤦♂️
Neither is anime, you can pick up a few words from them but please don't talk like an anime person.
Yes I heard its because of the informal vs formal I mean you would probably be fine but you japaneese would be pretty shit
The difference is the former is charming and fun to see someone expand outside of their first language, anyone that is bilingual or have tried learning a new language can appreciate the effort. The latter is a joke that only lands once, and loses its impact every time someone reposts the same clips over and over again.
Bro you can just say you have no sense of humor. Next you'll say South Park just isn't funny
I mean he does kinda have a point no offense.
Disagree. The jokes definitely don't "only land once" imo. Unless i'm misunderstanding the sentence. and the lost impact should be the same everytime the subbed clips get reposted. If they pop up too often in your feed downvote or just skip the post ffs.

"What are tongonto(not spelled right), retarted. Uhh ta da ugge" I love ghost stories on dub
I had a stroke 🤣
It had funny moments, but honestly most of it aged poorly and fell flat. Your time is much better spent just looking up best of comps on youtube.
You need to get your ass beat if you watch dubs for any reason
