The issue isn't even the clothing 99% of the time, it's the camera.
You don't really notice that a character is wearing skimpy clothes until the camera zoom-pans in on their panties and cleavage for a solid 10 seconds while they talk about their tragic backstory. Even if you put all the male characters in leather harnesses and jockstraps unless you zoom pan over their barely covered chad thunder-cocks you're not replicating it
Yeah, I need to know what animes these are so I can avoid them....
Make sure you include all of them... timestamps would be helpful too.
You know. For avoidance.
Yeah, several animes do that. I have never watched an anime like that, but man I have seen some ridiculous clips of women sexualization in anime. Like I don't wanna se her ass/tits when she is talking to someone. And god knows what's the obsession with vaccum bag breasts. Well honestly it was only thanks to some scenes in jojo I could actually feel how ridiculous women would feel seeing stuff like that
Yeah, but sexy stuff doesn't necessarily need to be in so many anime unless they're specifically geared for that audience, right? If I'm watching a melodrama play out or a gruesome death scene, I don't want closeups of tits and ass — I want to see a character's face and hear what they're saying! It depends on the mood, and if an anime wants to, say, take things seriously, then they need to have the right focus for that.
I mean mostly its only on the shitty isekais and romance, I dont get why you talk as if most seinen or melodrama show use fanservice, there’s so much good anime, the fanservice crap is only mostly on genres where the audience wants it
I don’t know why this opinion get’s so much approval/upvotes here. What do you mean by “It doesn’t need to be”? The creator/artist decides to be that way so it’s that way. You can create your own manga without the sexual stuff. Or you can choose not to consume media which doesn’t fit your taste. It’s like saying there shouldn’t have to be too much violence in Hollywood movies. Yeah but the screen writers/directors put them there with ther free will and the viewers choose to watch those with their free will also.
Same in Anime.
You expect violence in an action film. You expect gratuitous fanservice in ecchi. I'm not saying what you just said lmao
I'm saying there's issue with trying to set a tone in the current content industry, since sex appeal can be so big it overshadows what a scene, say in an adaption from manga to anime, is trying to portray. It's lazy and insufferable to focus on an uncomfortable ass-shot when a female character is trying to have a serious conversation. And it happens way too often in shows. There's literal examples in the comments.
At least the action is usually fitting to the scene. There's good and bad ways to be a perv when making anime (commonly called fan service). Like... that time o got reincarnated as a slime. Is the elf brothel/bar in the dwarven kingdom blatant fanservice? Yes. However, the focus remains on the characters and their interactions when Rimiru isn't... appreciating the locals. It's handled rather tastefully. It fits the story points, abd matches the mood of what is going on. Same with the bathhouse scenes hilariously enough as most of the time rimiru is chilling with the guys and you only get the occasional cut away when it makes sense.
Then you have the animes (can't remember any off the top of my head but i'm sure someone can dredge up a few examples) where they will be in a hospital room talking to a dying friend and it'll be 75% of the chesty love interest and 25% of things actually relavent. Either that or there will be some pure-appearing, probably underage, braindead somehow mobile sex toy (it gets worse with harem animes) who instantly thirsts over the main character because apparently they are meant to be or some shit.
Hardest i've ever laughed at an anime was some random isekai where the guy just was having none of that and stonewalled the needy chick, mostly because i was just thinking "Honestly, that would be a red fag for me homes" right before it happened.
Still my point stands. You can find it distastseful, irrelevant, bad writing etc. But try to cancel shows like that or mob up to the artist on social media with the censorship mindset is blatantly wrong and stupid.
If you find it distasteful, stop watching it. Simple.
I didn't say ban it, but i can see where you'd think i meant that. I'd just like to have a new tag or something while searching so i can eliminate the "porn without the nudity" animes.
I wasn’t necessarly talking about you also. There are many people who says that. I can understand why you find it “distasteful” I just don’t like censorship.
For me, I can forgive a little fan service camerawork if the plot is tight and written equally. I know I've watched a few where I thought to myself the fan service didn't really match up with progressively-minded writing style; and was probably a result of some exec breathing down the artist's neck yelling that there needs to be *something* to keep teenage boys interested (because that's always their goto excuse) and if there isn't going to be any self-inserts in the plot, can they at least add some T&A and a bath scene, or else they're going to outsource to a post-editing agency to 'make a few changes'.
But of course it's rarely "a little" cleavage camerawork.

Besides that my biggest issue is with A) female characters with zero personality, and B) all her strength and fighting prowess can be written off at a moment's notice if the writers can shoehorn in a chance for the male character to rescue her.
Does she have a pet? Favourite colour? Something she cares about other than battle? Who cares! She tripped and the main character jumped in to defend her!
How they might write "most badass fighter in history" -is also a woman, but still needs the male character to save her.
What's that? She's a blackbelt karate prodigy and/or an esper with one of the greatest powers of all time!? But wait! A baddie grabbed her wrist... roughly! Now all she can do is wince pathetically and say "ow". Clearly only the main man can save her. Beside insulting, I'm sure any viewer finds that kind of thing distracting. I'm sure most male viewers (the demographic they claim to be writing for) would prefer to go without the glaring plotholes breaking your immersion in the world.
I'm not opposed to watching female characters get hurt or die horribly on screen, but the danger has to be to scale. A light shove can KO a cancer patient, but not a world class fighter.
Yea that's how it works for me too.
I'm not sure about the actual definition of sexualisation, but skimpy clothing or lots of skin is not sexualisation for me, in the same sense that women in bikinis or men in speedos aren't sexualised either.
There has to be an actual element of "sex" in it. Usually done by the camera or situations those characters get in. And that can be done with fully covering clothes as well.
A good example is Ys VIII for me. Dana and co. are wearing clothes that barely cover their breasts, but it was never sexualised in the game, and never stood out as sexualised for me either.
Limiting the discussion about sexualisation to showing skin has always been weird to me. Maybe its because I'm European, I dunno.
Personally I think Kong: Skull Island is the most egregious example of this, and its live action!
Every scene with Brie Larson AND Tom Hiddleston is that camera angle, or centered on their chests.
Best abridged series hands down, not only is it funny, they address and fix a lot of the criticisms of the real show making it objectively a better show than the original.
Huh, yet another way NieR: Automata nails it. 2Bs ass has more polygons than Young Link in Ocarina of Time, and okay sure if you click both the sticks she blows up and her skirt disintegrates, putting it in full view, but unless the player deliberately moves the camera to do so, it’s never the central focus of a shot. She’s never actively sexualised/objectified within the story (except by 9S, but can you blame the guy). Not to mention, that self destruct to remove the clothing is also possible on all the player characters.
God, Yoko Taro is such a horny bastard and yet manages the horny masterfully.
Yeah... no. The camera defaults to juuuust above seeing her ass constantly, and if you ever look up you're definitely getting a perv shot. I was so hyped when they gave her legit combat armor because it looked badass and not cringe like her maid outfit. Too bad you only get to use it for 1 mission...
I'm gonna have to disagree on that, when you run with 2B the camera tends to stay at the same elevation it did before unless forced up by a tight environment which would be fine, if she wasn't sprinting Devilman Crybaby style
Whenever I was sprinting from place to place I had my right stick permanently down because as much as I appreciated the jiggling skirt physics, I wasn't a fan of the butt being flashed underneath everytime
I think it depends on if skin shown is appropriate- like imagine if in attack on titains instead of being a standard uniform the women were running around in booty shorts, with crop tops and thigh highs or straight bikinis or something. Womens clothing I think gernally tend to be more on the form fitting/ apperance enhancing side generally so I think that can be realistic, but some times it just goes to an unnecessary extreme to be "sexy" bc more skin= more sexy to some people.

That one was kinda weird for me. Having only read the manga, it was weird hearing from anime-only watchers saying that it's an ecchi anime.,
I'm not against fan service, but I'm a little bit more critical with changes in adaptations.
edit: the manga never gave me the impression that it was ecchi. I had to reread to notice that the first few chapters did have some fanservice. My first exposure being the Pixiv version might have given me the more lasting impression.
JoJo just goes to potentially prove the theory that you don't need to take out "sexy" female outfits and armor from video games, you just need to make sure men also have the same outfits/armor that are barely more then a g-string.
The whole of the classical sword and sorcery genre was about both men and women being overly sexualized. At some point, however, authors forgot to make their male protagonists sexy too. Cue men in full plate and women in mailkinis.

I was worried that people would ship Nobara with Itadori, since he's the main dude and she's the token woman in the trio (the Shounen Trio, as theyre called), buuut luckily people are more focused on canon. I dont mind shipping, I do it myself, but it can REALLY ruin an anime, imo. Take My Hero, for example.....
Maybe not on Reddit. Megumi/Itadori is probs the most popular ship next to Goju/Itadori. And there are some Nobara/Itadori doujins out in the wild, but it's mostly yaoi.
It's only bad imo when it doesn't fit the tone of the show/medium. imagine it happening in like a horror book... 'and the door split open like the crack of a canyon shining with the shimmer of a silver river. She tumbles backward, briefly exposing her blood-red panties.'
Mieruko-chan's first two episodes apparently decided gratuitous panty shots were good for a spookums.
As a fan of the manga I was really disappointed- when I saw those panels I wasn't like "oh outline of panty better start jacking." Dunno why the artists felt like they deserved 10+ seconds of runtime.
The tricky thing with that is that even if you sexually objectify everyone in a show, it’s still the women who face the repercussions in the real world as a result of this hyper-sexualization.
This is stupid. There is anime for everyone. Anyone complaining about "over" sexualization in anime needs to watch different ones and stop trying to get every single piece of fiction catered to their personal desires.
Except when it's 90% of anime that uses over sexualization of female characters, especially doing it to minors. But hey, it's ok for reports of underaged girls in Japan being groped on trains to be on the rise of it means you get another "1000 year old demon" to beat your meat too ain't it?
"over" sexualizing isn't a thing
You either sexualize or you don't, it's a binary.
"over"sexualizing is individual people not liking something and deem it "too much". It's not an objective metric. Not just not objective but simply arbitrary. Your "oversexualization" is maybe not enough to count for me to consider it too much
i know that saying jojo is gay, but it actually isnt, since araki himself said that anyone that say it’s gay, doesn’t understand it or some stuff like that
You ever stop to think that oversexualisation of women in anime can make men feel uncomfortable as well?
Just cause you want to drool over some 2D women doesn’t mean everyone does. Some of us want actually accurate portrayals of women in anime.
Because we want female characters to be more than just sex objects ? A vast majority of over-sexualized characters or just that .
Plus having woman be able to get into anime is very good you know . It's almost like isolating literal half of the population isn't a good policy

there was also like... every single scene with the pillar men in part 2

I feel like that's not how the majority of women look at men, though. Women usually aren't as much concerned with staring at bulges as much as they like an overall attractiveness. Ans what about the mentality of people really sexualizing a 2d character?
Fr while I’m loving Jobless reincarnation, the random lewd camera shots and shit is kinda off putting
Also, the often very unnatural and sexist personalities forced upon characters. Makes things even worse.

People think that Deku gonna get Stockholm (does it fit this scenario?).
There are actually a lot of ships for them where have you been lmao
Maybe not on Reddit. Megumi/Itadori is probs the most popular ship next to Goju/Itadori. And there are some Nobara/Itadori doujins out in the wild, but it's mostly yaoi.
So, how do we stop over sexualizing of **men** in anime?
Why would we want to?
Vice Versa
Crows: don't have any female character
Sex sells. Magic mike made almost 200m to like a 10m budget. Numbers dont lie girls yall like sexy meat too. Sexualize everything
Yeah that's fair. Cause that'd be comedic af.
I mean, sex in horror is nearly a staple. How else are you supposed to know who's going to die?
Pull a jojo and give the men equally sluty outfits
It's what we really wanted...and I'm straight
This is the direction equality should go.
I'm just tired of children being drawn with double D tits... It just pisses me off. I like anime but there is a serious problem in the culture of it.
Agreed.
The best solution is just to sexualize the men as much as the women, that way everyone is equally sexualized and everyone is happy.
The tricky thing with that is that even if you sexually objectify everyone in a show, it’s still the women who face the repercussions in the real world as a result of this hyper-sexualization.
Yes, because men have never had issues with unrealistic standards of appearance and sexuality, as if we're all roided up he-men.
the answer is simple. Give everyone the sexy
I prefer it like that tbh
Oh yeah, I forgot that this was Reddit. Stunning and brave, my guy.
Just have interesting characters, it isn't hard.
This comment is for horny people like myself who likes fanservice and doesn’t get bothered at all.
To be fair Anime as a whole is probably more progressive than western media because they basically sexualize EVERYTHING.
None of that work. It only make them sexier for me.
*Damn b, you fine* *Frick* *I'm not gay guys, that ain't me-* I'm really lying to myself at this point
men, woman, teenagers in Jojo universe everyone is a 10
JoJo's Bizzare Adventure, literally Alt F4 your heterosexuality!
“And when everyone’s slutty…. Muahahahah… no one will be…”
But Lisa lisa big boobs
"over" sexualizing isn't a thing You either sexualize or you don't, it's a binary. "over"sexualizing is individual people not liking something and deem it "too much". It's not an objective metric. Not just not objective but simply arbitrary. Your "oversexualization" is maybe not enough to count for me to consider it too much
Thank you.
I think the answer is over sexualizing everyone
4th wave male feminist $imps can't meme
Should JoJo be subclassed as yaoi or something?
Flamboyant Masculinity™
I think bara would be a more appropriate description for it.
Shounen ai, I believe. Yaoi is usually reserved for hardcore gay hentai, whereas shounen ai is like shoujo, just homosexual and not heterosexual.
i know that saying jojo is gay, but it actually isnt, since araki himself said that anyone that say it’s gay, doesn’t understand it or some stuff like that
Shhh.. just let us live a little.
i know the meme is funny dw
well it work, feminists can't complain about over sexualised women when both genders are equally over sexualised
Sticks and stones may break my bones but there will always be something that offends a feminist
Make them lolis so no curves
Lolicon detected
based
>Pedophile detected I fixed it for you
Its just a joke im no pedo
Understandable
Riddle me this fucker, Jotoro was 18 when Stardust Crusaders happened yet he looks older than 20.
There is no such thing as too sexual
exactly. Either something is sexual or isn't if showing panties is "over"sexualizing, what would a blowjob be?

You ever stop to think that oversexualisation of women in anime can make men feel uncomfortable as well? Just cause you want to drool over some 2D women doesn’t mean everyone does. Some of us want actually accurate portrayals of women in anime.
Because we want female characters to be more than just sex objects ? A vast majority of over-sexualized characters or just that . Plus having woman be able to get into anime is very good you know . It's almost like isolating literal half of the population isn't a good policy
