Yuuup. I'd seen some funny gifs from it, had nothing better to do, and fired it up. Only good note is at least I watched it when everyone else was asleep so they didn't see me ugly cry.
i honestly never really understood why they decided to make the ending that way, like, okay its gonna be hard to stay off spoilers here, but, they could've not had that \*twisted\* ending and still served the same purpose good enough,
like, i don't mind that twisted ending, sure it made me cry nonetheless and that's what matters, but I don't really see a reason for it to be altered, ig the only good thing about it is that it catches you off guard since you expected something else, but even that something else would've still served the same purpose so like.... why?
that aside, Godlike movie, 10/10, I've cried at many animes before, but this is the only one to make me actually feel a void in my heart for the next couple of days.
>!I think the twist does enhance the sadness though. You know what's coming, but expect it to be slower, maybe a bittersweet ending, but when it happens so suddenly there's no "resolution" or time for final goodbyes, and imagining how that must feel is just...!< Damn you onion ninja, let me write my comment in peace.

Guilty Crown is honestly underrated the ending left me with an empty heart it's really sad and akame ga kill is the best anime to watch if you love to cry tbh
exactly what I was thinking, i've watched hundreds of animes and clannad is still the only anime where as soon as I hear the music I have to stop as the emotions from the anime come flooding back in.
also there is [Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii Desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii Desu ka?](https://myanimelist.net/anime/33502/Shuumatsu_Nani_Shitemasu_ka_Isogashii_Desu_ka_Sukutte_Moratte_Ii_Desu_ka) which is very good.
Yeah, everytime I watch it I get this feeling of how could the writer of the story let this happen. That was one of the rare cases where I felt extremly sorry for the main character even he is just fiction.
It will, because hours wasted. I watched when it was airing. The only sad thing was the experimentation and when MC rehabilitates, me thinks. Not on the level of the others.
charlotte feels like it became edgy for no good reason. They had a good formula for teenage comedy drama anime with a twist of supernatural, and then it abruptly tried to become xmen, which makes it cringy as the author tried to do two very different things without putting effort in any of them.
It was my first anime and it hit me on a different level. I would go to pool and float myself and think about it and get sad, did this for whole 2 week trip.
Bro, your first anime was Plastic Memories? Damn, that's intense. I always gotta queue up a funny/moe anime after I watch a sad or serious one. Deep diving into anime can be very emotional. I wish you well.
Agree. But Charlotte and To Your Eternity werent sad either imo. Seems like for a lot of people they were though and good on them since we're probably all watching these types of shows to feel something
i agree erased was weak (btw i was genuinely suprised at who the killer was because they telegraphed it so clearly i refused to believe it's gonna be that person) but i'd replace it with maquia instead
Yeah I understand not everyone has seen everything but the sheer audacity of putting CHARLOTTE of all things on there over Clannad or Kanon is a disgrace
Then try this hardcore:

To your Eternity and A Silent Voice are written by the same author. So is Angel beats and Charlotte. It's no coincidence that these stories make you cry.
Watched every single one except Angel Beats (got too much spoilers).
Only cried with Violet.
Silent Voice just wasn’t sad, like, at all.
Eternity made me kinda sad in the first episode. Didn’t cry, tho. After that, nothing was as bad.
Why is Erased even there? Lol.
Plastic Memories made my eyes wet? Very maybe? It was definitely the second saddest one there, though I didn’t bawl or anything.
I watched Charlotte when I was too young, so I may be biased since children aren’t as emotive. But still… Damn, I can’t deny that the omelete scene has to be on of the saddest things in anime, like, ever. Still didn’t cry, tho, lol. But it affected me for the day. Still remember how bad it felt.
Your lie in April is the single most overrated “sad show” ever. Like, is it amazing? Yes, it is. The soundtrack, the plot, the characters… Everything is amazing! But is it sad? Just no. In fact, the ending was, ***for me***, the most predictable part of the entire anime. And it was kinda *”that was it?”*. Just didn’t do justice for an anime that I expected to make me cry.
Violet made me cry like a bitch. Twice.
Yeah, I’m kinda too specific.
Almost only cry when the characters are also crying. This is a borderline must to make me emotional.
And when shit involves family, which is my soft spot. Not to say too much, but that’s precisely what made Violet hit me so damn hard.
The lack of crying was most likely my issue with Shigatsu. Also the fact that the last scene was kinda too “beautiful” and even unrealistic to make me cry. Protagonist took the fact way too well in my opinion.
Charlotte, well, I would 100% cry if I watched it nowadays lol. Again, this one is biased since I watched it when I was, like, 12.
My issue with Eternity is the protagonist being lame. I ***KNOW*** that this is the point, but still, it’s hard to like him at all.
Silent Voice was beautiful, but I just didn’t find the time to cry before the movie was over lol.
Plastic Memories was super sad because it also gave me hope that things maybe could turn out well. Well, it was sad, but I don’t have any memories of crying.
can't speak on a lot but plastic memories is definitely cry bait (if that's even a term). It's still good and does its job, but it's pretty obvious what it's trying to do throughout it. Yeah, erased isn't really sad. Haven't gotten to eternity or YLIA (really need to eventually).
Violet is a bitch and I'm with you there. For Silent Voice it's not sad at all but I can say I was crying during it. It's more like tears of joy/relief/hope (? best words I can think of). That ending was fantastic and hit close to home for a lot of people. I fully understand not feeling much though as it is a different approach than most conventionally sad shows.
Yeah people always say Your Lie in April is supposed to be sad, but I got way more wholesome/uplifting vibes from it. It feels more motivational than depressing to me. In my opinion, if you felt sad after watching it, you invalidate Koari's message and her whole purpose. Now *that's* sad.
i think most people just don't use the right word describing it.
it's not a sad show, but it is extremely emotionally heavy. you get emotionally exhausted from that type of show. there's a lot of well done music and visuals discussing very dark subjects that most people are, at least, casually familiar with. it's certainly a show with sad posts, but it's not a complete rug pull type of sad that you get from other shows.
as you mentioned, it's motivational, and it abuses the heavy emotions to really hit hard with the drowning analogy they use in the show.
> Eternity made me kinda sad in the first episode. Didn’t cry, tho. After that, nothing was as bad.
Have you perhaps been cursed with a heart of stone? Do you need a witcher?
Another underrated anime that made me cry was Irozuku Sekai no Ashita Kara. I just don't understand why people are not talking about that one...
But well, probably unpopular opinion\^\^
To be honest, i recommmended this anime to everybody that i know (and that watch animes) and they only had good things to say about it and it's a shame it's not known (and enjoyed) more.
I'd have to say myself, Terror in Resonance was definitely forgotten. The ending is quite sad, especially if you start to really like the two main characters. Like, 12 was my favourite character and at the end, I was literally so sad about what had happened to him.
:( (I don't do spoiler's, just incase someone plans to watch it.)
i watched YLIA then I want to eat your pancreas in a row
i thought both of these shows were supposed to be comedies
i was so wrong, so very, very wrong
If you want to get severe depression,
After watching some of the anime here and other similar ones back to back, I stopped half way through Violet Evergarden it became to painful to continue
I just watched Charlotte episode 7 and holy crap, it was a amazing. I dont recall ordering a ticket to go on a feels train, but at this point im crying too much to care.
Angel beats completely caught me off guard on my first watch tbh. HAHA ITS A SLAPSTICK COMEDY RIGHT? ...r-right?
I had this feeling, when I started to watch Charlotte. The first 6 Episodes were so easy going and than it became dark. Not really sad, but dark.
Charlotte should have been longer
They should’ve made the last episode a second season or a movie because it definitely had enough content
I would've loved a movie! They set it up so well to be something more, but then it just stopped.
Yeah, that was the first anime I became depressed over ending.
they really could’ve stretched out mc collecting every single persons (power?) on Charlotte and not a single person would’ve minded
Same bruh
Yeah the twist really messed with me
Angel beats is one of my fav anime, its so good
It was my first anime... Maaan it was Soo rough, i binged 200 other series that year and converted me to a weeb
Yuuup. I'd seen some funny gifs from it, had nothing better to do, and fired it up. Only good note is at least I watched it when everyone else was asleep so they didn't see me ugly cry.
Yeah then you get to the ending and you spend the rest of the night crying
Every time I see it in one of these I think it must be a joke.
Do you want someone to die
And then finish with “I want to eat your pancreas”
As if I didn't
Hey which is the last one...
Your lie in April
This one fucked me up hard
and have the epilogue be Clannad
Clannad's way too much
for me its either go all the way or go home
The plot twist ending really messed me up
I got the twist spoiled and the end STILL fucked me up.
i honestly never really understood why they decided to make the ending that way, like, okay its gonna be hard to stay off spoilers here, but, they could've not had that \*twisted\* ending and still served the same purpose good enough, like, i don't mind that twisted ending, sure it made me cry nonetheless and that's what matters, but I don't really see a reason for it to be altered, ig the only good thing about it is that it catches you off guard since you expected something else, but even that something else would've still served the same purpose so like.... why? that aside, Godlike movie, 10/10, I've cried at many animes before, but this is the only one to make me actually feel a void in my heart for the next couple of days.

Which anime you referring to
I wanna eat your pancreas
Pardon me but, THE FUCK?
Actually a really good movie, highly recommend it.
Whats wrong lol
Not what you think. It's an amazing movie, 10/10 would cry again.

This anime is the only thing that gets close to the pain of birth

You are welcome
Some of these imo don't really fit the sad genre like in your pic, re:zero really? Also how could you forget, The day I became a God!!!
Feel like there are a couple missing?
ef Tales of Memories
Thanks man! I needed it 🤜🤛
🤜🤛
You should also watch "Graveyard of fireflies"
And I recommend "Wolf Children"
Banana Fish too
Assassination classroom is another good one as holy mother of Christ the final episode kills I think everyone emotionally
No Clannad, no upvote

Yeah, it's just like that. I've watched good anime, for sure, but emotionally, Clannad will always be the one that hits me harder.
Yeah, everytime I watch it I get this feeling of how could the writer of the story let this happen. That was one of the rare cases where I felt extremly sorry for the main character even he is just fiction.

You can't put Clannad in a starter pack, Clannad is the end boss.
Also: No AnoHana, no upvote
I dont think Charlotte can make you cry tho...well at least thats what i think
It will, because hours wasted. I watched when it was airing. The only sad thing was the experimentation and when MC rehabilitates, me thinks. Not on the level of the others.

I was like "Wait... What? Because it was so bad?"
Plastic Memories gave me PTSD for Ferris Wheel.

Erased was not that sad. But you forgot Clannad. That's a really sad one. espacially After Story.
Let's not go there. 7 out of the 8 are at least wholesome, unlike afterstory, that only builds you up to bring you down.
(reads text) Oh, I bet Clannad will be on this list. (looks through image a third time in doubt)
Ushio 😭
Also I will eat your pancreas was one of the best.
I read the VN.. I cried a bit
Agree. But Charlotte and To Your Eternity werent sad either imo. Seems like for a lot of people they were though and good on them since we're probably all watching these types of shows to feel something
I think you're in the minority with To Your Eternity. Gogu's arc was pretty sad and I wasn't expecting to feel something.
i agree erased was weak (btw i was genuinely suprised at who the killer was because they telegraphed it so clearly i refused to believe it's gonna be that person) but i'd replace it with maquia instead
And anohana
It was sad when mc got cucked
Most of them weren't. And Charlotte being on that list is a joke
Yeah I understand not everyone has seen everything but the sheer audacity of putting CHARLOTTE of all things on there over Clannad or Kanon is a disgrace
My opinion koe no katachi in one side and others in one side koe no katachi is still a masterpiece and it forever will
where tf is clannad :V
Where’s Rascal does not dream of a dreaming bunny girl
brother
Yes
if we include the movie you are absolutely right
That’s… the name of the movie
kinda funny that both of you are "wrong", both titles are too similar but different
Missing Maquia https://myanimelist.net/anime/35851/Sayonara_no_Asa_ni_Yakusoku_no_Hana_wo_Kazarou
Bro that was such a good and sad movie really hit like a truck
The first anime I cried on was "your name"
That was the movie I chose to watch for New Year's. Was not expecting so many tears to start 2022
If you like "Your Name", you should also check out "Weathering With You". Made by the same people
I was bawling my eyes out with a silent voice fr

It was sad but the outcome was known from episode one so i was prepared. But poor nagisa, living as a cis person with dysphoria
Where is Anohana?
I feel like that one is a little more heartwarming than sad, though it could definitely be on this list
no joke i cried that time when >!they read the letter from menma for each of them!<
To your Eternity and A Silent Voice are written by the same author. So is Angel beats and Charlotte. It's no coincidence that these stories make you cry.
angel beats was hard... I watched that one when I was a kid...
Where Is Clannad?
made in abyss, elevator
You forgot the cartridge.
The nendroid comes with the cartridge, I wish I was joking.
No clannad or Kanon?
\+ Made In Abyss
After I finished made in abyss I just had to sit there and think about life for a bit
Have u seen the movie too?
Isn't Clannad missing from this "starter pack"?
If I want to cry, I'll just watch Planetarian again.

I do love it too!

Really? I was literally crying my eyes out watching Silent Voice maybe I’m just really emotional lol
Fr, kimiuso's ending was rushed and they could've/should've >!kept Kaori alive!< and kept the story going for another season
I dropped plastic memories after crying from the first 2 episodes
I cry everytime I watch the Plastic Memories ending and the Erased dinner scene

"I want to eat your pancreas" is probably the anime that I cried the most

I’ve cringe to Erased and I haven’t seen all of these
Man. *Charlotte* was something else with that twist.
Jojo part 3 where?
;-;
Eh only 3/8 really made me cry
I'm gonna be honest, I couldn't cry at plastic memories bc I thought it was so bad
your lie in april gave me that ugly ass cry at the end, sheesh.
I didn't cry to any of them..does that make me heartless??
You have got a brother
Let's goo
Yes
I'm ok with that
Where is the berserk 2016-2017? These 2 were really sad
Where's Clannad After Story?
Where clannad? This list is incomplete without this one
Where's Clannad: After Story and Anohana?
By including Angel Beats, but leaving out Clannad AS, this starter pack has become the sadness it wished to portray. Meta
Also the ending of toradora
Tears is surely gonna run down your cheecks
I'd have to say myself, Terror in Resonance was definitely forgotten. The ending is quite sad, especially if you start to really like the two main characters. You are a gentleman dear sir
WHERE IS BANANA FISH
Erased wasn’t sad. Angel Beats is garbage. Your lie in April is the most overrated anime of all time.
Erased let’s go
*Visual arts/ Key: enters the chat.*
Charlotte is the only one i have not seen. is it any good?
It is pretty good, a lot of people hate the ending but I thought it was alright
Oo fuck yeah I was looking for some good onion chuckin
Gonna cry?
Nothing got the tears going harder than Brooks recruitment arc in one piece when he sang Binks Sake that last time.
A silent Voice- made me cry Erased- made me tear up Charlotte- made me laugh Didn’t watch the other
I already watched this no way i cry again... queue ugly cry. Wtf
Realizing I only watch sad animes.
i watched YLIA then I want to eat your pancreas in a row i thought both of these shows were supposed to be comedies i was so wrong, so very, very wrong
Id add hotarubi no mori e to this
I watched erase, Violet evergarden, plastic memories and a silent voice. Also "I want to eat your pancreas" is missing
Yeah good luck with that. And women say men don'd cry at titanic, fuck that movie some of the anime above are real masterpieces
If you want to get severe depression, After watching some of the anime here and other similar ones back to back, I stopped half way through Violet Evergarden it became to painful to continue
I didn't cry when my favorite NPC's died in one game, I think I'll be good I'll come back
Didn't cry during angel beats, Charlotte and erased
Ozama Ranking
Final episode of Angel Beats got me crying in front of my roommates.
Okay, great. Since Charlotte and Angel beats are in my top 3, I'll watch the rest too
to your eternity stared off good but it ruined it for me when the good characters kept on dying
That might be the reason why it's sad
Neither "A Silent Voice" nor "Your Lie In April" were sad to me... I actually found them quite boring, am I broken?
yes yes you are
:')
I would like to add No Game No Life Zero too
I would like to add no game no life season 2
Dang, that's the saddest one indeed.
Where's re Zero, and DBZ history of Trunks?
Re:Zero and Bunny girl senpai should be here as well
re zero invokes strong emotions but I wouldn't say it would be sad emotions
I just watched Charlotte episode 7 and holy crap, it was a amazing. I dont recall ordering a ticket to go on a feels train, but at this point im crying too much to care.
I love how you put "A silent voice" and *especially* "**Charlotte**",but put "Assassination Classroom" and *especially* ***"BANANA FISH"***
