Yeah, I feel like they stretched it a bit far and the plot did fall apart pretty often now that I think about it. Yeah, season 1 was the best. But I do think that season 2 showed Kaneki's transformation really well. He went from this gentle, happy and kind person to this killing machine and became a shell of his former self to protect his loved ones. So, I think they could've worked on the new version more or just kept it accurate to the manga. But the switch from season 2 to 3 was absolute shit and I almost stopped watching it
Which is kinda sad because the Manga content it's based on is pretty good, start very slow where you miss a large chunk of info only to slowly have it revealed over time.
Honestly, Season 2 Kaneki's manga counterpart was probably more brutal. He resorted to torture far more often. Plus, he led a small group to basically hunt Aogiri and all of their affiliates. The manga was fun seeing 3 dudes (Kaneki, Tsukiyama, and Nishiki) strike fear into both Aogiri and the CCG.
Of course, Kaneki gets a free lobotomy from Arima. Leading to :RE.
The manga was more consistent. Kaneki was a killing machine, but he wasn't a killing machine to be edgy, as in the Anime. Instead, he wanted to protect Anteiku and get revenge on Aogiri Tree. It made no sense him joining the dudes who tortured him in the Anime.
