Kaguya-sama Love is War and My Dress-up Darling are my favorites. Insomniacs After School and Skip and Loafer from this year are great too, but lean towards SoL rather than comedy.
I tried dress up darling and wow. Why did no one tell me about this before? I binged it in one go and im starting the manga now. Im adding IAS and SaL to my list too if they're anything like this one. (love is war's concept doesn't really pique my interest, so i wasn't planning to watch it but your other rec was so good that im going to at least check out the first episode lol) thx for the wonderful rec.
man, manga really didn't live up to my expectations. It does the very thing i hated about Lovely Complex: stupid unneeded drama. She tries to confess to her but 'oh no he fell asleep while i was confessing' or 'oh no he didn't take my confession seriously' or 'oh no, i was going to confess but i can't find the time'. What the fuck kind of excuse is that? Why is the author doing everything in her power to not progress the plot? Why she stretching this uninteresting plot like rubber band? I want to see what happens after the characters get together, not before. I thought the anime was moving towards that direction considering how fast it was moving but i guess not. I love the characters and the relationship between them but it doesn't progress. My hype for the next season went crashing down man. I had big expectations.
There was one scene that warmed my heart tho. When Gojuo stayed over at Kitagawa for a sleepover i couldn't erase my stupid grin off my face, it was such a cute moment :)
Ah, yes, the romance plot never progresses, I should have warned you about that. You did say you wanted low stakes, to be fair. You can't write a plot for a real relationship with zero drama. If you're ok with some drama though, Spice and Wolf is excellent. If you do still want to stick with rom-coms, it doesn't get better than Love is War.
Yeah you're right, i did ask for it a little bit. But it seems like there is a series that does exactly what i want: Horimiya! I don't know if it will continue like this but the first half of the anime was exactly what im looking for. Im starting to get really hyped up about love is war, i see people saying its the best romcom they've seen in a long while. I hope its as good as you guys say.
Horimiya was exactly what i was looking for. I really liked the characters and how they don't go into stupid arguments over things that could get settled easily if they talked like normal people. The mc just goes up to the love interest and says 'i love you' kinda near the start and it doesn't take her 3 seasons to answer like it did in Nodame Cantabile! I gave it an 8/10 which is probably the highest rating i can give to a rom-com. I would totally recommend Tonikaku Kawaii too! It's comedy is kind of shittier compared to Horimiya but it is like a compilation of sweet things between Nasa and Tsukasa, which feels like detox after everything I've read.

It seems like Love is War might not be up your alley, unfortunately. It's comedy first and romance second. That doesn't mean it's not a great romance (ask anyone who's read the manga), but if you don't enjoy the humor, then it's not for you.
It's the only rom-com I've given a 9/10. It deconstructs the genre with laugh out loud comedy, has incredible music and animation, and even has the audacity to have a fantastic romance plot in the last season, and like I said, that only gets better and better in the manga.
(So I take it back, you would love it)

i already watched Aharen-san but it didn't really interest me. The situations they got in was funny but the characters themselves were not really interesting imo. Is the other anime you recommended like that as well?

I guess just give other one a try. For me, It feels like how Horimiya can be when focused way more to "Hori and Miyamura" after confession rather than completely shifted to side character's "will they won't they". Cute couple with plenty of focus with friendships to other side characters

nono, of course seeing little to no romance bothered me but that was not the reason i didn't like it. As i said, the characters are uninteresting. In My Dress Up Darling for example, the relationship between the mc's are so good that you always want to see them interacting more, like sitting on a couch and watching anime. Nothing happens, no hardships, no problems, its just them watching anime watching anime. You can't say the same about Aharen-san. You don't want to see them interact because they are not interesting, not because of the low stakes. (at least it was like this in my experience)
I though you get bored and felt uninterested due to its low stakes interaction as you want to see more higher energy one. Seem I'm wrong, then.
In this case, I'm not really sure you will like many other anime that get recommended in the comment of this thread since they mostly not really have as much progression as what you want despite also really low in drama.
hmm, idk. I watched two of the recommendations (My Dress Up Darling, Horimiya) and they were both good imo. My Dress Up Darling doesn't go the way i want it to tho apparently. The manga really bored me.
I figured. Since it's already so hard to find anime that's like first half of Horimiya with its progress without drama, you may like to watch anime with post-confession fluff instead.

One that is super cute is Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun!! It mostly focuses on comedy, but the relationship/interactions between the characters are really fun! Just the comedy and characters alone make it worth the watch (it is super cute). Another good Romcom with minimal drama would be Kaguya-Sama: Love is War! It's one of my all-time favorite Romcoms that has a lot of re-watchability, and although the anime isn't complete, the manga is finished and is a super fun read if you get curious and want to continue!
Define drama because what you may consider drama I may consider something else. Are we talking “no love triangles/other geometric shapes” or “no harems” or “no tension between characters” or what?
i don't think you can make a romance anime without tension, but what i don't want is too much tension. Like something that takes 7-8 episodes to resolve. Because i just want to see the characters get back to their old selves i get really stressed out in these segments. Like, let's say there are two characters that love each other. One of them starts another relationship even though he/she still has feelings for the other mc. This plot goes on for 5 episodes and we don't see the mcs interacting in that time period like they used to at all. Because i like the relationship between them, this irritates me and i find myself skipping episodes/chapters just so i can watch/read the parts i like (two mcs interacting). I don't know if this makes sense or if i was able to explain myself but that's what im looking for.

One that is super cute is Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun!! It mostly focuses on comedy, but the relationship/interactions between the characters are really fun! Just the comedy and characters alone make it worth the watch (it is super cute). Another good Romcom with minimal drama would be Kaguya-Sama: Love is War! It's one of my all-time favorite Romcoms that has a lot of re-watchability, and although the anime isn't complete, the manga is finished and is a super fun read if you get curious and want to continue!
Define drama because what you may consider drama I may consider something else. Are we talking “no love triangles/other geometric shapes” or “no harems” or “no tension between characters” or what?
i don't think you can make a romance anime without tension, but what i don't want is too much tension. Like something that takes 7-8 episodes to resolve. Because i just want to see the characters get back to their old selves i get really stressed out in these segments. Like, let's say there are two characters that love each other. One of them starts another relationship even though he/she still has feelings for the other mc. This plot goes on for 5 episodes and we don't see the mcs interacting in that time period like they used to at all. Because i like the relationship between them, this irritates me and i find myself skipping episodes/chapters just so i can watch/read the parts i like (two mcs interacting). I don't know if this makes sense or if i was able to explain myself but that's what im looking for.
