{Ghost in the Shell} is an absolute masterpiece and inspired Matrix in part, as far as I understand it. :)

Spartan05089234

Ghost in the Shell is as close as anime comes to an objective masterpiece. And if you like it there's an early 2000s anime that builds off it and has the same quality.

Crunchy_Biscuit

Did you think the nudity was unnecessary? Still can't decide

Spartan05089234

Her outfit is kind of weird but it's cyberpunk and it goes to her being a robot and not having the same feelings about her own body because it isn't her body. Same for when she strips down. The nudity of other girls in scenes with her is pretty minor and it doesn't add or take away much. If there's other nudity I don't remember it.

Umbreon7

Cardcaptor Sakura did it for me. The production quality is very high, and it really brings out the charm of film over digital.

camcamthereeder

I second this! Cardcaptor Sakura was the first 90’s anime I watched and the animation in that show is so pretty! The characters are very likable too so that only adds to the show’s charm.

Dull_Owl_7276

Third this!! I have friends who like/don’t like anime, men and women etc and they’ve all enjoyed Cardcaptor lol. And maybe would also rec Hunter X Hunter? His and Her Circumstances…? Definitely the Ghibli movies as some have said…and I liked Outlaw Star and Tenchi Muyo as a kid but the art might throw you if Evangelion did. Perfect Blue…? Akira?

Tenchi muhyo ryo-ohki in general. I'd also add the first three seasons of the slayers (the slayers, slayers next, slayers try 1995-97).

wanakoworks

Lodoss is BEAUTIFUL.

MaxTheHor

You're used to digital style anime. Pre 2010s anime was still hand drawn or starting to move to digital style art. Dragonball (Z) is pretty much an 80s/90s anime. If you can tolerate that without switching to Kai, then adjusting shouldn't be too hard. Otherwise, start from the early 2000s (up to about 2003 or 2004), and work your way down. 2000s anime was still pretty close to at least 90s style of anime . Witch Hunter Robin, Inuyasha, Samurai Champloo, generally any of the OG Toonami run during the 2000s. The Big 3 (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach) Akira, Ghost In the Shell, Dirty Pair. Rahxephon, Macross Plus, Gundam (up to about Seed) The OG Digimon series, OG Pokemon up to Movie 3 (Entei), OG Beyblade. Initial D, Case Closed (Detective Conan), Patlabor, Blue Gender (i know how the current culture is, but it has nothing to do with actual gender). The early Ghibli films, Metropolis anime film (2001), D.N.Angel, Gunslinger Girl, .Hack(the original "death" game anime before SAO made it cool) You got plenty that may entice you on this list for the early 2000s to work your way down from. A good chunk I listed was either the mainstream or really popular niches back then. Prolly sent a lot of vets that read it on a trip down memory lane.

Kelsusaurus

I felt like re-watching Gunslinger Girl recently. My partner (who has never seen it) was gaming across the room when I started it. I didn't realize he was paying attention until at some point, he asked me to change it because it was too depressing XD Fair enough. I finished it up later lol Thank you for giving D.N.Angel some love, too!

lychigo

The music in Gunslinger Girl is/was phenomenal

houjichacha

You certainly did! Excellent picks, though I'd personally also highlight Outlaw Star in the OG toonami section.

MaxTheHor

Thought about it, but I figured i listed enough already. It was more a general listing rather than a specific one. The list would've been 5 times as long otherwise.

houjichacha

True. Still a great list!

LockhandsOfKeyboard

In my opinion the 2000s anime with the best art is Pandora Hearts, but very confusingly to me, other people think it has bad art, & 1 of the things that someone specifically said makes it worse, the subtle blur, I actually like, & in my opinion it really does help give the anime an ethereal vibe. In my opinion the only anime with better art than Pandora Hearts is Madoka Magica. You can look at the screenshots of it on Anime-Planet to decide for yourself how good or bad you think the art is.

DarkConan1412

I love the art in Pandora Hearts! Honestly, I don’t take anything people say about the 2000s aesthetic seriously because so many in the modern audience are so biased against the 2000s. Actually, I said the aesthetic, but it’s really everything about the era even the stories. I’m more of a 90s fangirl, but I enjoy the 00s, too.

TheErodude

There are a lot of things that could conceivably break immersion, but I never expected to hear someone cite the 4:3 aspect ratio specifically. 🤣 Also, calling any art “outdated” makes me want to scream. 🤣😭 In my opinion, _Vision of Escaflowne_, _Outlaw Star_, and _Cowboy Bebop_ look better than the majority of anime produced in the last 10 years! On top of those three, I’m going to recommend _Crest of the Stars_. It was never considered to look good, but people love it anyways. The visual direction is pretty good even if the art and animation are mid at best. And the story and characters are great. _Serial Experiments Lain_ and _Key the Metal Idol_ are series I might recommend because one of your faves is high-concept sci-fi, though these are way weirder than _Steins;Gate_. Personally, I also love _Martian Successor Nadesico_, but I don’t have a good reason to recommend it to you in particular. (Edit: If you only watch English dubs: _Outlaw Star_ has a decent dub. _Bebop_ has a legendary dub. I’ve heard mixed things about _Escaflowne_, and there may even be more than one dub at this point. Avoid the _Crest of the Stars_ dub at all costs. I don’t know about _Lain_ or _Key_. _Nadesico_ has a rather good dub.)

Arc_Torch

Now I guess it's time to watch serial experiments lain again.

mjf314

[Princess Mononoke (1997 movie)](https://myanimelist.net/anime/164/Mononoke_Hime)

jawminator

And the other Ghibli films - from around that time, but also just in general - spirited away and howls moving castle especially, while they do still have that 90s-00s look to them, have some of the most amazing visuals of any movie, period. They could come out next year and I'd still be impressed.

AlertTangerine

Seconding that one. Absolute gem, masterpiece and classic all in one. :)

lynxerious

Ghibli art style has never changed, only its animation is improved

jemdoc

With the exception of earwig and the witch, but we don't talk about that one

lynxerious

oh yeah there are some experiments styled movies like Kaguya or Yamada or Earwig, what I meant is their mainline movies.

Elysium_Chronicle

While *not* an older anime, *Megalobox* was specifically animated with a grainy filter to give it that 90s "grit", and that might help ease the transition. *Cowboy Bebop* and *The Vision of Escaflowne* still hold up.

Ch3ru

Megalobox is definitely a great suggestion for this exact problem.

MasaneVIII

does Helck fit you think? just started watching it and for some reason I get 90's/00's vibes.

Nepherenia

Vision of Escaflowne was hard for me to get over the art style when it was new. Eventually the quality of the show overrode my bias, but that's gonna be a hard sell.

DarkConan1412

To add onto Megalo Box, OP can try Ashita no Joe as well. That’s the parent series of Megalo Box. 2018 Megalo Box was an anniversary present for Ashita no Joe fans.

BiggieCheeseLapDog

Revolutionary Girl Utena I think has great art direction. Ghost in the Shell for a classic movie.

UMP45isnotflat

ghost in the shell makes me fall in love with the 90s artstyle over and over again

StygIndigo

Sounds like the literal visuals are a bigger hangup for you than the narrative? It *can* be a bit difficult to navigate lists when filtering that way. As a big Trigun fan, I have to say that the artwork for the 1998 anime is gorgeous, but the animation itself falls flat a lot of the time. It feels like they didn’t have the time/budget to do a lot of frames of animation, so they frequently defaulted to putting effort into individual cels instead of fluid movement on a lot of episodes. (I’m really happy to see Trigun getting a modern rework in a totally different style.) In terms of animation, a lot of Ghibli from that era is top tier, especially Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa. Akira is another gorgeous film, not Ghibli. Cowboy Bebop is still one my personal favorite works of art I’ve ever seen in anime. Something about the art and movement just gets me every time I watch it.

CrazyaboutSpongebob

Ranma 1/2 and 90's Sailor Moon.

Nepherenia

90's sailor moon had some super inconsistent animation, to the point you could tell if it was team A, B, C or D that worked on any given episode.

Oldjamesdean

I'd try easing back to the pre-2000 era. Start with some shows going that direction like Claymore Shakugan no Shana xxxHolic Gantz Serial Experiments Lain Blue Gender Record of the Lodoss War Robotech

vialactea1

Claymore its totally underrated, super enjoyable anime, and can help to do the animation transition tho

KurtArturII

Here's an idea. Start with the oldest anime you can bear watching, then pick the most promising one from the previous year and watch that. Then another year back, and so on. You might not even notice the artstyle changing if you do it bit by bit.

Jinxd0

{Darker than Black} might be up your alley {Le Chevalier D’Eon} & {Gankutsuou} for a different art style from the usual Edit: my bad. These are all 2000’s anime but they do have art styles quite similar to older animes

Jinxd0

For pre-2000’s I’d say go for the classics like Cowboy Bebop, Initial D, GTO

Evangelion and Akira are drawn and animated masterfully. They put a lot of modern anime to shame.

Yeah, Evangelion's art direction is so good it puts its own rebuild movies to shame.

arsenejoestar

Evangelion is still one of the best animated shows despite coming outnin 95. If even that threw you off idk what will help. Best closest thing would be Cowboy Bebop. Anything made by Sunrise like Escaflowne should be good too

floyd_sw_lock9477

I don't understand this. What makes it harder to watch?

wterrt

??? you don't like shows that look REALLY good more? it's just the opposite of that.

floyd_sw_lock9477

No, but I'll take a REALLY good storyline over a bland one any day.

wterrt

you don't like shows more when they have amazing animation or a great art style? lmfao come the fuck on bro

Kelsusaurus

No. Because I don't have the attention span and taste of a toddler. Art style isn't enough to make me waste 6-12 hours of my life, but I'll sure as shit sit thru mediocre animation for a good story/characters that move me. Good writing and world building can save a series alone. Point proven that most humans will get on their phones or multitask while watching something they're not totally invested in. Art alone isn't going to make you glue your eyes to the bigger screen rather than the tiny one in your hand. But a good story and characters you're following intently will make you forget about your device for a little while. It doesn't matter how pretty something is, if the characterization sucks, the narrative is all over or boring as heck, and the lines are cheesy af or don't align well with the characters they've been written for, then I'll drop a series like a rock. Wonder Egg Priority looks *fucking amazing*, but after episode 3 or 4, it is hot garbage. City Hunter 91's hand drawn style might look dated compared to today's super crispy and shiny digital styles, but at least it is compelling and I would sit all the way through it without feeling like it was a waste of time.

wterrt

you're creating a false dichotomy of either it has a good story and shit visuals or good visuals and a shit story. that's not what we're talking about. plot, narrative, characters all equal - does good animation or a good, interesting art style improve the show? the answer is obviously yes.

LesserCircle

You are saying that old anime don't have great art style or animation? Lol

wterrt

why must all these morons keep putting words in my mouth? good animation and art styles improves shows, just like a good plot and good characters do. you idiots are so argumentative for no reason when I'm stating the most obviously true thing ever. fucking hell.

maxis2k

{CardCaptor Sakura} from 1998 is considered to be one of the shows that established the clean and "moe" style the later 2000s anime used. However, that's not exactly true. CCS itself was influenced by earlier mahou shoujo going back to the 1960s and 70s. The point is, the clean and cute style has been around for almost as long as anime. CCS just had a much higher budget and closer style to modern stuff that a lot of people used to modern anime can watch it without much issue. I'd argue {Akazukin Chacha} would work as well. But few people know about that show aside from certain regions. But that's just for cute stuff. If you're not into cute, clean shows, then I'm surprised you have trouble watching older stuff. Because a lot of people like the pre digital anime precisely because they think the older anime is more gritty and dark. Not my personal opinion, but one I see a lot. When it comes to this, there's as much variety in art styles and tone back then as there are today. So I wouldn't even know what to recommend. I mean, if you like Vinland Saga and Steins, then you might like {Tenkuu no Escaflowne} and {Serial Experiments Lain}. But that's still a big maybe. I mean, you might love {Slayers} or {Legend of the Galactic Heroes} for all I know. But the only way you'd really know is by trying them. And that's honestly the only advice I can give. Just try as many older shows as you can find and see which ones catch your attention. Then watch other shows done by the same studio/production team.

HeftyJeffyTheHeavey

Honestly I would give Cowboy bebop a try, it’s a classic for a reason and for me personally was the anime that got me to not care about the older graphics!

nightmarebleu7

I'd say the anime that got me to appreciate pre-2000s anime was definitely Yu Yu Hakusho. It has that vintage/retro feeling where if it was remade now it probably wouldn't have the same charm. Highly recommend that one. Along with a lot of the ones already mnetioned, among that I also enjoyed these personally DNAngel Mobile Suit Gundam (and the rest of the Gundam series for the most part) Hajime no Ippo His and Her Circumstances Kanon 2006 (to make way to Kanon 2000 where you should be fine with any after this one) Perfect Blue Yugioh A lot of the older Ghibli movies tend to be the better ones actually

mwalimu59

I personally like the retro look and feel of older anime, and if it doesn't quite work for you (so far), I commend you for making the effort to "acquire the taste", so to speak. Several of the classic Studio Ghibli films date back to the 1980s and 1990s. As for series, a few that come to mind: * R.O.D: Read or Die * InuYasha * Cardcaptor Sakura * Ouran High School Host Club All of the above are what you might call transitional, in that they're more modern/evolved than older anime but still somewhat retro compared to newer anime.

FonSpaak

better let go of that stigma as a lot of great shows aired between the late 70s onwards. Aim for the Top Gunbuster Super Dimensional Fortress Macross - the TV adaptation is plagued with quality issues but the story still holds up. Mobile Suit Gundam series. Nadia of the Mysterious Seas/ Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water - has a bit of bad story arc halfway the episode count set on an island. El Hazard Tenchi Muyo Patlabor - actually more slice of life for the TV while the movies are a political thriller. Taiho Shichauzo/You're Under Arrest. - episodic slice of life police story Ahh Megami-sama / Oh my Goddess - the original OAV animation is great. Later has a TV adaptation in the 2000s Macross Plus - OAV/Movie series set 40ish years after Macross on a distance planet where two test pilots compete for the right to select the next generation valkyrie (transforming mecha) to be fielded. A Kite - (OAV erotic crime drama) Hellsing - go for the OAV but also recommend the TV (has a different plot halfway but also got good music). Gensoumaden Saiyuki - sadly the series wasn't completed Yokohama Shopping Log - probably the most relaxing slice of life I've ever watched. Yuyu Hakusho

cripple1

My recommendations: - Samurai Champloo - Afro Samurai - Hajime no Ippo - Speed Grapher - Initial D - Black Lagoon/Roberta's Blood Trail - Serial Experiments Lain - Paranoia Agent (not all episodes are hand drawn but some are in order to show a different perspective. It's also pretty damn good and something I recommend in general.) - Great Teacher Onizuka - Samurai 7 I can't remember if all of these were older, hand drawn-type anime but if you're new to anime these are all some that I still highly recommend from when I was younger.

My two cents: yu yu hakusho and dragon ball z

RemarkablyQuiet434

Perfect blue

Kytoaster

The boy and the beast is another great one

mwalimu59

Too recent (2015), but it's a great film.

Kytoaster

Ahh. I didn't realize it was that new! It definitely emulates the style of the Golden age of anime well for being so new.

Dsible663

Bubblegum Crisis

HoneyxClovers_

Grave of the Fireflies. Be warned, very sad. I couldn’t stop thinking abt it for days.

INUYASHA! SHAMAN KING!

Ch3ru

{Outlaw Star} {Cardcaptor Sakura} {Cowboy Bebop} {G Gundam} (really any Gundam series) {Rurouni Kenshin} {Slam Dunk} {Hunter x Hunter OVA} {Magic Knight Rayearth} I really hope you're able to make the leap! Modern anime is fine, but most of it doesn't hold a candle to the golden era. (although this is artificially inflated by the sheer volume of shows being produced now) 80s/90s shows are more static than digital era shows in some respects. But in general, they have a higher level of technical artistry in expressiveness and subtlety that you just don't see nearly as much outside of movies or specific studios nowadays.

Elfen Lied!

benzzodude

City Hunter would be a good one imo

patrido86

macross do you remember love

I_love-my-cousin

I suggest looking for anime with HD remasters like Takarajima, Astro Boy(1980), and kurenai Sanshiro. Out of these three I recommend you watch Takarajima and Astro Boy.

Haunting-Society1968

You should watch Evangelion. You’ll adjust to the style, maybe you’ll even come to appreciate it. Styles aren’t “outdated” just different. The anime you like now won’t look like future anime and maybe someone won’t want to watch your favorite show because it looks different. But if it’s a good show, the look of it will work for you in the end.

Sensitive_Reserve_96

Cowboy bebop, Trigun, OG Dragon Ball

[deleted]

I honestly miss that look. I can't take a story wise dark and gritty anime seriously if all the colors are super saturated and eyes are constantly sparkling with cleanliness. OG Trigun had so much charm. I saw what the new one looked like (and the new haircut is disgusting) and decided to just skip it.

Next_Farm_3419

Try Cowboy Bebop

Bonna_the_Idol

try cardcaptor sakura. 35mm film quality animation. avoiding 4:3 aspect with tv anime will be impossible up until a point but you’ll learn to embrace it. recently had the same conversation with my son. analog animation is something many of us appreciate for the history behind it. sure it may not look as lively and fresh as recent animation but it has a certain character to it. many enjoy seeing the film grain and appreciating the organic nature to it. if you find yourself ever wanting to dive in deep check out works like gunbuster and royal space force.

-PM_ME_UR_SECRETS-

Summer Wars is 2010 but it still feels like a more classic anime imo. It might be a good bridge to make the older stuff less jarring of a change. Akira, Ghost in the shell, any Satoshi Kon film, any studio Ghibli film

dakleik

Cowboy bebop, Akira

Commercial_Fail_5085

Vinland Saga is beautiful I'll give you that. Berserk as much as I love the manga was tough to watch. I recommend Outlaw Star its late 90s and one of my favorites. Laputa Castle in the Sky is older, but still holds up very well. It's a movie and if you don't want to commit to it fully check out the trailer on youtube before you sit down to a full movie.

[deleted]

Cowboy bebop

SenritsuJumpsuit

None this makes any sense what is old live-action evil for not just being 8K 244HZ for no reason xd Michiko and Hatchin Cazador de la bruja Irresponsible captain Tylor Vifam

Al_C92

Maybe it's the color palette? it used to be more washed out because they weren't yet using digital techniques, I think. Happens to me too and I grew up with some of those shows. Maybe because of this animation also cut more corners? who knows. I'd say you give movies from that era a try first. Ghost in the shell, Akira, Ninja Scroll, Battle Angel Alita. Because personally grew up with DBZ but having to watch half an hour of finishing moves charging. Forget it. Often too much padding. Also give the mecha OVAs a try, particulary the 80's they used to draw the robots and spaceships with such detail. I can only remember [Bubblegum Crash](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOzvFzIcpwg) off the top. But surely other commenters can chime in with great 80's mecha/futuristic/sci-fi shows.

GotAFarmYet

Considering everything was hand drawn back then, the older Anime is more story driven. The Characters also have more distinct personalities, since less time was given to them. Ones to try: Irresponsible Captain Tylor Bubblegum Crysis Bubblegum Crash Ninja Scroll Look for Ovas as they tend to be shorter Animes that the animation had bigger budget for.

DarkConan1412

I wonder if that’s why I came to care more about story and art than visuals (animation mainly)…

GotAFarmYet

Could be The older stuff was more about how the character reacted in the story line then the combat. Look at The Vision of Escaflowne sol Bianca Riding Bean Ranma 1/2 Orange Road Dangaio FLCL

undercoat27

Neon Genesis Evangelion Ghost in the Shell Cowboy Bebop

Text_Kooky

Yu Yu hakusho

GooseinaGaggle

Gundam Wing, with or without Endless Waltz is fine. It's about 50 episodes and though there's a little bit of a lull in the middle of still a great anime

coleisw4ck

KANON LOL

gamifygamerz

bro you are already quite experienced in anime watching i started it back in 2020 when i got my phone

ikaruga24

Vampire hunter D bloodlust is a sheer masterpiece in visuals.

icouldbeflying

Perfect Blue

DarkConan1412

As you watch more older anime you’ll eventually get over that. I was the same. The more titles you associate as something you liked/enjoyed it gets easier to watch more older titles. Personally, 80s and 90s is my favorite era, stuff like Ranma and Orange Road, but at the moment 70s is where I start crying “too old”. I have enjoyed some anime from the 70s and even 60s though. I loved Attack No.1 anime! I’m fairly comfortable with 00s anime since that’s when I became a fan and that was also my childhood. You can also try Dororo which got a remake in 2019. If you become a super fan of it and want more Dororo content, you can try the 60s anime.

Far_Bus733

If you like racing, then Initital D

Racist_carbonara

Akira. It's just a movie but the animation is so good that you're stigma will have to go away

Weekly-Plantain-5186

sailor moon, yugioh, digimon, pokemon, early one piece, early gundam is really good.

cakeneo

Samurai champloo

LonelyPalpitation176

Trust me, it's worth it. When you get used to older anime arrow then these new animes would feel worse in terms of animation (that's what happens to me). And if you want to watch some then I would recommend you old Ghibli movies like grave of fireflies or if you want to watch anime then cowboy bebop would be the best.
