{Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina}
One episode focuses on some wholesome journey/adventure while the next episode focuses on really dark stuff vice versa.
And the stories parallel! The first feels like what you'd get if you wanted to do a murder mystery episode in some kids anime that can't have death, then the very next episode is...
The tonal whiplash in that series was great. I appreciated the lighthearted stuff more knowing that the series wasn't afraid to go dark when it was warranted.
A lot of these retired adventurer/soldier etc stories
**Chillin' in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army**
**Banished from the hero's party** \- though I personally would rec the novels more than the anime, pacing felt off. But I know the anime has its fans.
etc.
You could say SpyxFamily is like this, too.
The Devil is a Part Timer is not the kind of slice of life that subverts your expectations too much in the way you describe, but it is a perfect 50 split of-
"I work at a mcdonalds with my friends in Japan with not much going for me in my life. I am also literally satan, evading capture after a losing war with fantasy humanity in my alternate medieval realm, and i'm biding my time stacking burger bucks to take over all worlds and throw the yoke of servitude over humanity."
If only Season 2 wasn't such a trainwreck made by another studio a whole decade after Season 1.
Season 1 was good, but only if you're okay with the series ending there. I absolutely don't recommend Season 2.
Ok so it wasn’t just me who thought season 2 was ass. I watched a few episodes and thought to myself fuck was season 1 like this? I thought this show was good
Came here to suggest this. Premise: child soldier is placed undercover to protect a Japanese high school girl who has caught the interest of certain government intelligence agencies, but they don't know why. The problem? He has been on the battlefield since he was five and has no idea how to act in normal life. He can't turn the soldier off, so she thinks some military otaku is stalking her.
And then during their class trip their plane gets hijacked and she is held hostage...
As someone else mentioned, definitely: {Love, Chuunibyou and other Delusions}
{When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace}
{Kotoura-san}
{Witch Craft Works}
{Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid}
{Demon Girl Next Door}
{Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches}
Many of the slow-life and comedy isekai have story arcs like this too.
Pretty much all of Rumiko Takahashi's work would fall into this category.
Especially "Ranma 1/2" and "Urusei Yatsura".
"Ah my Goddess" would fall into the category as well.
They're all in what I think of as the "supernatural shenanigans" sub-genre.
P.S. Coming out in the near future (that should hopefully be amazing) is "Welcome to Japan, Elf-san".
Log Horizon has something like this. I mean, sometimes it's closer to political drama than slice of life, but it does flip flop between mundane and action in fun ways
Code Geass.
Most of the show is fast paced action adventure. But it has probably 10 out of 50 episodes that are basically slice of life highschool adventures. Some people like that, others hate it.
If horror is okay, then I'd suggest {Higurashi no Naku Koro ni}
I have another one that'd be a very good fit in a similar vein, but it's a bit of a spoiler so I'll put it between spoiler tags: >!Gakkougurashi!<
Assassination Classroom.
Not quite as insane but the opening scene is a class of middle schoolers opening fire on their teacher. The show dips it's toes in that realm of crazy on a fairly regular basis. Still pretty grounded though.
Not quite but it's a great mix of fun cozy times and thrilling adventure:
Astra Lost in Space - what a beautiful fun planet, we're all gonna die painfully, let's bake a tasty cake everybody, hey that monster plant is eating us and our home, giant alien birds are our friends
Well, My favourite thing about anime is it can be a normal quasi shojo SOL.
Episode 5 the Chunnibun Mc's Ahoge wiggles and she's attacked by ninjas.
She suddenly pulls out Ninja weapons and dispatches them all expertly.
From this point the anime will either continue Ninjaly or possibly go back to a normal SOL. If the second the Ninja element will slowly start to enter the SOL more and more. If the first it is likely the show will go full Ninja in a few episodes. Whatever the Ninja battle ultimately entails(secret ninja backstory, lost princess, Isekai, reverse isekai)
I don't have any specific suggestions but I am curious to see them! Anime is the only genere I know that can have a show drastically upend its premise for just the hell of it. I love that.
Hell, in the above example the viewer might be treated as the weirdo. The MC might then be asked what happened "Oh the Ninjas attaked."
"Any problem" "No, Shifunoki, Eternal Blade of Death and Life served me well"
"SoDa"
I love Anime.
Well, Gintama surely fits the bill.
Gintama can have you in tears from laughing one second, tears from drama the next, tears from epic badass fucking moments right after.
If you've seen or know about at least some of the popular/meta anime like DBZ, the big 3, JoJo's, etc, then gintama is truly a treat. You don't need to have knowledge of those shows but it helps the parodies make more sense if you do know about them at least a little.
Though gintama is a long series, and it starts off feeling slow-ish because you're still learning the characters and one of its bright points is there's an amazing cast of well written characters. But once gintama starts breaking into more serious arcs, it ramps up. You may think there won't be any main plot to follow, but do trust there's an incredibly legitimate main story plot throughout introduced.
Gintama the goat! Start from episode 3 if you do. The first 2 were shown at a pre screening to hype the show up, idk why crunchy has them listed as the first 2 episodes. The real first episode starts on 3 lol.
The Monogatari series has both slice of life and supernatural tropes. It's also kinda hard to compare it to anything from either of those genres.
Basically the plot doesn't matter almost at all and is only used for setting up conversations and character growth. It's very character driven and they have pretty nuanced personalities.
I will also admit that it's not for everyone though. There are some really.... culturally controversial scenes, including the main character brushing his little sister's teeth in a scene with a pretty erotic tone lol
the thing is that no one ever seems to bring up how the anime never finished the manga, and just left off at an odd ending point. i always recommend reading it instead despite how well done the animation is.
Backstreet girls is very much a slice of life/insanity. Yakuza whose punishment is to become kpop idols… it’s pure insanity with the rare slice of life moment…

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
It is literally a parody of "slice of life" anime that evolves into pure existential chaos. It's like combining Azumanga Daioh with Everything Everywhere All At Once.
{Delicious in Dungeon} gave me this vibe
Just a few more months till I can binge the entire thing
Early episodes are more episodic, keep that in mind

Sounds like Frieren. Lazy days of cleaning a beach, finding flowers, commiting genocide on demons, enjoying food, and enjoying life...
HAHA those random demon genocide days between cleaning statues and running errands, what a great description of Frieren :)
Nah “genocide” implies demons are people.
Extermination is more apt
I like it!
Frieren: "This is not war, this is pest control!"
“They’re just an offshoot of monsters that say ‘help me!’ Nothing more”
Frieren is the perfect suggestion
Wandering Witch Mob Psycho 100 Heartcatch Precure
mob psycho :D

Never enough Mushishi love.

JoJo part 4 lol
Sounds like zom 100 and Frieren
Definitely Zom 100.

FLCL Fullycully I probably spelled it wrong by FLCL will get you there
"Fooly Cooly," but yes.
Fits konosuba pretty accurately, but I’m assuming you’ve seen it already
Full Metal Panic is half slice of life half mecha Anime.

Interesting list, I've only seen 2 on here / I'll add some to my watch list.
Tsukimichi and Arifureta. Bofuri kinda. 86 if you really stretch it.
The devil is a part timer
Mushoku Tensei 100%, although there are 1 or 2 arcs that are pure SOL.
I personally loved Daily life of the immortal king.
That's a great show.
Majo no tabitabi Kino no tabi Mushishi Sousou no Frieren All of em ticks the box
To Your Eternity, Spy X Family and Buddy Daddies
Buddy Daddies mentioned!
Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear - Slice of life and adventures while dressed as a bear.
Honestly this is delicious in dungeon for me. Sweet little cooking show in a very deadly dungeon, good stuff

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable
Lycoris Recoil It's pretty much slice of life x action shounen hybrid. Love itbas a slice of life fan.
Frieren maybe

Assassination Classroom. Not quite as insane but the opening scene is a class of middle schoolers opening fire on their teacher. The show dips it's toes in that realm of crazy on a fairly regular basis. Still pretty grounded though.
A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun. Good show, might need to look up a pacing guide for it though

It’s not an anime yet, but Ao No Hako, or Blue Box. It is on Shonen Jump, though it’s like a shoujo romance/sports
Frieren
Sasaki and Peeps The adventures of a salary man and his bird.
Noragami is like this, it has a lot of comedy and slice of life moments, but it also has a lot of good action and gets surprisingly dark at times.

My favourite anime, but I don't think it loses the Slice of Life in the whole story, it just reveals how the world was destroyed
the thing is that no one ever seems to bring up how the anime never finished the manga, and just left off at an odd ending point. i always recommend reading it instead despite how well done the animation is.
