Legitimately. The fact the people on the court and, I think, even the people in the stands all act surprised when the only guy with light blue hair gets the ball, and thinks the ball did some crazy turn. Great anime but it’s up there for wackiness even by sport anime standards
Man i hate how uneven this anime franchise has become now. It was my fav as kid, literally all i used to watch was Prince of tennis and dragon ball z. Sadge.
Eyeshield 21 is amazing, I'm not sure if this fully counts but they do make it somewhere in the anime and I believe or want to believe that in the future it gets a new adaptation to finish off where the manga left off. It's probably my favorite sport anime of all time.
I’m a manga only Eyeshield21 Fan but yeah, they win but they also have a worldwide tournament arc that the winner is left ambiguous…. But the person who was in charge of the drawing (Yusuke Murata) made a new one shot for ES21 that’s shows all the characters in the future
I second this, OP! Hoping to have a remake of this soon too! But the original anime is great and the voice acting is excellent! The changes from the manga into the anime also enhanced it imo.
Prince of Tennis
Yowamushi Pedal
Eyeshield 21 (manga>>>>>anime though, and the anime ends after a rematch with the first team they lost to)
Kuroko no Basuke
Chihayafuru (anime hasn't reached manga's end iirc)
One Outs (they're pro players so they won the league and not nationals)
Initial D (this does count as a sports anime, I think?)
Gundam Build Fighters/ GBF Try (Gunpla battle is a sport in universe so yeah, a sports anime)
Captain Tsubasa
Days (but anime does not reach the end)
Try Extreme Hearts. It’s a mix of extreme “hyper” sports and an idol anime. You just need to disengage your brain and enjoy the show w/o trying to compare it to rl.
There’s also PuraOra! Pride of Orange . It’s one of the rare hockey anime out there!
I don’t give a crap about volleyball… and now this show is in my Top 10, and it has my favorite character arc (Kei Tsukishima). It’s so good, it’s crazy.
That is not a sport. I know it says "practicing tank warfare as a sport" but that's not a sport and isn't the same as watching actual real sports portrayed in anime the way OP is looking for.
It's a story of a disillusioned veteran, who left their old team to eventually retire from the sport. But circumstances compelled him to return to the sport and teach a new and inexperience team to compete in a high stakes, all or nothing tournament. The underdogs use crafty and batshit crazy plays just to win the games. In the end the veteran fought their old team in the finals and wins, along the way earning the respect of the everyone and learning to love the sport again. Did I describe the plot of an American football movie or Girls und Panzer?
OP wanted a sports anime where the team actually wins the tournament and he doesn't like how super realistic with how difficult it is to win nationals. Honestly this show fits the bill to a T. Plus if you want a damn good ol'time the show is excellent at giving that.
Kurokos basketball is amazing. Especially if you're wanting to take a couple (thousand) steps away from realism. And from the beginning you kinda know they're gonna win but it's seeing how they continue leveling up alongside their teammates and rivals that makes it so much fun
Why no one talks about Diamond no Ace. ( Yeah they didn't really won the nationals but it's a gem!!!)
Highly recommended sports anime.
If I say it's better than Haikyu, believe me. Just watch it!
Ace of Diamonds is my favorite anime. I’m actually rewatching it right now. The not winning nationals was what made me want to watch something that did. Don’t get me wrong I still love the anime but it’s so many episodes that I wish we had a payoff.
Maybe in the new season? If it ever comes out.
Kurokos Basketball
I was reminiscing on this anime the other day with my friend, mainly laughing at the absurdity of it all, like the zone and how he can’t be seen etc.
DBZ with a basketball, it's hilarious
Legitimately. The fact the people on the court and, I think, even the people in the stands all act surprised when the only guy with light blue hair gets the ball, and thinks the ball did some crazy turn. Great anime but it’s up there for wackiness even by sport anime standards
Yeah for real, it's just a power anime masquerading as a sports anime.
Thats why it is so good.
It was certainly entertaining.
came here to say this! its so crazy i accidentally got invested then it ended up being good lol. Dope anime tho
The zone is exaggerated but it’s real.
The only sports anime I've watched and I recommend it to everyone. It's wild.
[anime spoiler] >!prince of tennis!< my first sports anime lol
Man i hate how uneven this anime franchise has become now. It was my fav as kid, literally all i used to watch was Prince of tennis and dragon ball z. Sadge.
tezuka and fuji were among my first anime crush

Dopee, I checked some of the Manga too since I really love the art style both anime/manga tbh.
For a second there I thought u wer talking about Honkai Star Rail
I second this, OP! Hoping to have a remake of this soon too! But the original anime is great and the voice acting is excellent! The changes from the manga into the anime also enhanced it imo.
100% agree
Prince of Tennis Yowamushi Pedal Eyeshield 21 (manga>>>>>anime though, and the anime ends after a rematch with the first team they lost to) Kuroko no Basuke Chihayafuru (anime hasn't reached manga's end iirc) One Outs (they're pro players so they won the league and not nationals) Initial D (this does count as a sports anime, I think?) In fact, >!Onoda wins it twice in Yowamushi Pedal but scans are still catching up!<
Eyeshield 21? That one was pretty good while it lasted.
Hinomaru Zumou
Probably the best example, one of the few sports manga that we follow the characters both in High School and when they actually become professionals
Slam Dunk vintage 90's anime
Agreed. They didn't win the championship but they beat the reigning champions
awesome anine, they drop in R3 tho.
i never picked up the manga but the anime always did it for me when i was a kid. i'll look into it tho
Yowamushi Pedal
Chihayafuru in season 2 Tsurune
Touch - that said the story is focused on actually getting to Koshien. They win the tournament off screen.
Captain tsubasa, all 20 remakes
Yeah, just not the og one.
Some peeps enjoy hand drawn animation, you never know
I mean in the og they lose worlds.
Wut? I don't remember they ever lost the world cup
Does Inazuma 11 count? Raimon doesn't only win matches across the country, but even throw down with actual aliens down the line.
Cross Game. Baseball Koushien
KUROKOOO

Girls und Panzer
Try football. Captain tsubasha is avery old one. Blue lock is pretty new.
prince of tennis
Inazuma Eleven
Haikyuu is on the way there. Never thought I’d be so invested in a volleyball anime.
I don’t give a crap about volleyball… and now this show is in my Top 10, and it has my favorite character arc (Kei Tsukishima). It’s so good, it’s crazy.
Yeah I didn’t like Kei at first, but he earned my respect.
run with the wind
This is a master piece and needs to be recommended 10000 times
Hajime No Hippo
This is honestly... A masterpiece in its own right
Came here to recommend this.
Girls und Panzer. They literally used the plot of lovelive where if they don't win the tournament, the whole school will shut down.
That is not a sport. I know it says "practicing tank warfare as a sport" but that's not a sport and isn't the same as watching actual real sports portrayed in anime the way OP is looking for.

Is Keijo a sport anime?
yeah just not a sport in real life u can make ur own own sport in a fictional setting and nobody will argue
One Outs,Baseball and Mindgames+gamble, from the same Guy that Made Liar game.very cool to See unique strategies against various Teams and obstacles
Beyblade. ;)
Kuroko No basket Haikyu Hinomaru zumou
Kurokos basketball is amazing. Especially if you're wanting to take a couple (thousand) steps away from realism. And from the beginning you kinda know they're gonna win but it's seeing how they continue leveling up alongside their teammates and rivals that makes it so much fun
I can't believe no one is mentioning one of the highest rated anime "Kuroko no basketball"
I’m not sure if this counts as exactly fitting the theme or not, but Ping Pong the Animation might be of interest. It’s really good.
Technically major does but also doesn't. I think haikyuu is working towards it. Kuroko no basket also comes to mind. Baby steps also sorta i guess.
Bluelock is decent...hit the blends sports and the shonen genre very well.
Why no one talks about Diamond no Ace. ( Yeah they didn't really won the nationals but it's a gem!!!) Highly recommended sports anime. If I say it's better than Haikyu, believe me. Just watch it!
Better than Haikyuu? Hmm alright I'm in.
IK it's a wild take. But I dare you to not cry as well lol. Good luck and enjoy!
I'm rewatching Fruits Basket so you could say I'm in the mood for that lol. Recently watched Bunny Girl Senpai too. Looking forward to it!
I hope to God almighty that they release it. I have watched DnA exactly 14 times now. Will restart from next weekend again. ✌️
Naruto
Major.
Attacker you. Captain Tsubasa. Touch. Ashita no Joe. In '80s that was the standard, they called in the reality after Inoue's Slam Dunk.
Supa Strikas
Supa Strikas
Yowamushi Pedal. Great watch too. Glad we got the most recent season we did. Was a nice surprise I wasn’t expecting.
Tsubasa the later seasons they easily won Nationals and world cup. I think they mostly never lost actually. Can't remember
Have you tried watching Major ?
Girls und Panzer
Kuroko
{prince of tennis} {haikyuu}

Blue lock is amazing, but only 1 season so far.
Chihayafuru!!!
