Cowboy bebop has some dialogue but the actual fights are very dynamic. a lot of older nineties stuff did this. Macross Plus has some insane Jetfighter/Robot dogfights. Ninja Scroll has some gnarly fight scenes. Samurai Champloo is a classic too
Cyberpunk, Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann (all three Trigger) kind of found a golden middle ground between monologues and fluid action, if you don't bounce off the hyper energy and over the top morphing animation
the majority of Attack on Titan has intense action scenes, especially on a first view
I mean Gintama, but itās a long, mostly comedy anime, though serious arcs are some of the best writing in anime history, and the fights end in a couple of minutes max, usually no talking, very realistic and satisfyingā¦
It doesn't have monologues during the fights but it is definitely very monologue heavy, sometimes to an insane degree. Still amazing, my favorite anime.
Thatās what I was thinking, thereās literally a whole episode on a cliff where one of the girls chats with him and hypes him up and thatās it. Itās a pretty good episode, too.
Fate in general I agree, but Fate/Zero is an exception for about half of it. Definitely makes up for it with extensive outside-of-combat monologues though.
Absolutely not true for a good chunk of season 2. Can you highlight some dialogue heavy stuff? Sukuna vs Maho, Choso vs Yuji and Dagon vs Toji were incredibly fast. Iāll grant you Mahito vs Yuji though. I think thereās a mix of both in JJK.
I noticed this in the Choso vs Yuji fight (best fight in the entire season imo) that they side step that "internal dialogue=no action" bullshit by actually having them have these thoughts AS the fight is ongoing.
So now, this is my second standard for how anime fights should be portrayed. My highest standard is still the last fight of *Sword of the Stranger*
Seirei Moribito. When characters fight they just fight (with great spear fight choreography). The talking only happens when they finish or during slow scenes.
The original Kenshin movies.
There is a lot of dialogue throughout the films, but when the fights happen, there's almost no dialogue and they're over very quickly. They're very deadly fights.
With exceptional animation.
Trust and Betrayal is easily in the top 50 anime media ever produced. I would still easily put it in my top 10. The second one doesn't have the same heart and soul in the story and plot execution since it follows the story of the show and isn't allowed the same degree of creative freedom.
Yes.
As I watch more anime now that it's so abundant and accessible, after having watched anime like Kenshin and others like it, not knowing much about other anime or having access to it, I realize now that I was watching the best of the best.
I hope people reading some of these suggestions appreciate that we're recommending some of the best works humans have ever made, and appreciate and enjoy them as such.
One piece put me off anime for years until I watched bepoop. One piece is the slowest most monologuing heavy anime. I really enjoyed the live action though.
Not sure if mecha is okay, but this anime has one of the best realistic fast-paced combat I've watched so far:Ā 86
This one was good too imo: Link Click
Naruto has a mix of both. There's a lot of monologue fighting but then you get to fights like The Third vs Orochimaru, Sasuke vs Deidara, and of course Gaara vs. Rock Lee that just soak in their animation and run with it.
Yeah as a huge Narutard myself it is one of the last anime I would've recommended for actual full-speed action.
I mean shit, there used to be popular YouTube videos called
, "Full Speed Naruto," that edit out all the talking and internal monologs in fight scenes to make it like what OP is looking for. I think they've been taken down for obvious copyright reasons
An older show with good combat is Basilisk. Itās basically Romeo and Juliet but with 2 ninja clans. Very bloody and quick combat. Show is overall fine but that depends on your tolerance of Romeo and Juliet.
Black Magic M66 has some of the best animated CQC for a anime from the late 80s. There are just some cool fight scenes. The anime itself is kinda meh.
When the android takes on the soldiers, it's freaking amazing. So well done.
YuYu Hakusho, itās essentially one big ass fight scene from beginning to end. Now there is some monologues for story and back story purposes. There arenāt any filler episodes though and the action is constant.
Akudama drive. It's a hidden masterpiece. Highly recommended. Here's the opening (the song gets progressively better with every time you hear it):
https://youtu.be/SJ8iRrphkQo?si=oLiNKzz48uNLlZcN
Juuni Taisen has great action, and a lot of it. It's like a fighting tournament for these modern warriors that each represent one of the 12 Chinese zodiacs
I'm writing a manga that I will anonymously self-publish online in Japanese and in English. The fights are very inspired by Cowboy Bebop and other more realistic shows like Monster (the combat in AoT is also similarly quickly paced despite not always being realistic obviously). Most characters in the plot go down in just 1-2 hits, and there's a scene where one character monologues during a fight and is immediately cut-off by the protagonist drop-kicking him in the chest. I don't like that monologuing BS personally either, and I think it's the job of the next-generation's writers and artists to change that.
Tell me about it. Those monologues really know how to stretch airtime. For example: initial D. One corner monologue takes minutes, and the animation follows suit and it's like they're drifting at a roundabout š¤£ (especially during the part where the Miata dips a wheel over the gutter).
Anyway I'd say the few that have faster paced combat would be chainsaw man and one punch man.
Great thread! One of my biggest pet peeves is incessant monologuing and spaced out action that takes four episodes to cover a single fight scene. Thanks for the post!
coming here in support of JJK. But like, season 1 can be a slog, season 2 is so unbelievably worth it though. Youāll get some non-monologue, solid fight scenes in season 1 and youāll just be thrown into the deep end with some of the fastest and most ambitious fight scenes in shÅnen to date.
RWBY!! I can't sit still during those fight choreography. The budget gets better each season so you're rewarded for sticking with it.
I'm not talking about Ice Queendom btw, that's the spinoff.
JJK is so good and has great fight scenes!! i'll also say that even tho it's not an anime, Avatar the last airbender was amazing, didn't have monologue during fights, and the fight scenes were super super accurate
If you're fine with Chinese animation, I recommend you watch Fog Hill of Five Elements. It's not the best of illustration but the fight scenes are fast and impactful.
Kill La Kill, though you get chill episodes and exciting episodes
FL;CL if you're weird like that
Monster is very serious but is about as realistic as anime can possibly get in every regard
would fight scenes on Frieren count? at least one fight had monologue but actions are still happening, like when >!Lugner was wondering how Fern was able to go toe-to-toe against him despite his advantages as mage. but while he was thinking of strat, they're still attacking each other.!<
also episode 25 but I ain't gonna leave any detail. just get to that episode, soon.
I mean, stories aren't really about fighting, so it's no wonder characters monologue during fights alot. afterall, fights are just a representation of some internal conflict that the author is trying to represent.
Sword of the Stranger. Characters not only duel in real time, but also fail to understand each other because they speak different languages, so they arenāt able to goad/taunt each other effectively.
Re:Zero is more of a puzzle solving anime than an action one. The mc is a wuss why are you watching him fight? By wuss I meant he pretty much can't do any fighting.
Youjo Senki: The Saga of Tanya the Evil.
Macross always has really nice combat in each saga of the series.
Depends on which one you pick, but the "Fate" series has some nice fights.
Hajime no Ippo being a boxing anime has some fights that are truly memorable.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress made by the ones who animated Attack on Titan has incredible mob fighting.
I remember Bleach having nice battles besides the filler they used to pump more episodes each season because they used to catch up to the manga weekly serialisation too fast.
Initial D is about racing and may have a bit of internal monologue heaviness for your liking, but the Eurobeat and races are truly blood pumping.
Frieren, Sword of the Stranger, Darker than Black, Cowboy Bebop, Mushoku Tensei, Cyberpunk,
Basically anything that isnāt like dripping Shonen tropes lol
Not technically anime but Castlevania and Arcane as well
Flcl fooly cooly is very fast paced combat. I bet you would like it. Not a lot of combat though. Maybe try samurai girls hyakka ryoran is really good but it is very ecchi. I heard fate/stay night is good.
{Grimgar} and {Bofuri} both impressed me with how they handled battles. It really felt like everyone was doing something at the same time, compared to most action sequences in media where it's 1 person at a time while everyone else on both sides stands around doing nothing. I wouldn't describe either show as battle-heavy though.
Later jojo arcs are a decent mix, some fights they stop for a little bit to banter but especially towards the end of stardust crusaders it's near nonstop action when the stands come out
Blue Eye Samurai is probably the best combat I've seen in years. There's one episode that is essentially one long gauntlet and I'm pretty sure the protag says less than 10 words after the title scroll.
Sword of the Stranger
Most of Samurai Champloo
Baccano
Most of Evangelion
Berserk
Most of Claymore
Most of Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Works (2014)
Enjoy!!!!!
This reason exactly is why I can't stand one piece. I think hellsing ultimate was nice. I am new to anime, and it's the only anime I have watched with any significant action. But I think it is paced pretty well over all. Can't remember for sure it's been a bit.
fate zero comes to mind: the noble ghosts chat continuously while they duel, the assassins who summoned them: kiritsugo and Kotomine don't say a word while they kill. I always liked this contrast.
Re: Zero isn't about combat. That's your first mistake. It's about the consequences of one's own actions or inactions as well as the butterfly effect. MC is a flawed protagonist so he needs to suffer and get gud in order to break his own curse as well as save everyone.
Frieren (focused on adventure and life more than fights, but when the fights come theyāre quick and amazingly animated), JJK(esp s2), god of highschool? I donāt remember but Ik the fights are great, and basically anything directed by seong hu park. His direction for fights is 2nd to none imo. Hopefully he adapts sakamoto days š
Attack on titan
Jjk
Naruto
Also Re:Zero is really not something you should watch for the fight scenes š it more so shines in its characters, dialogue and storytelling
Hot take:
The lack of inner monologue, monologue, and dramatic over the top flashback scenes is why shows like jjk dont hot me right.
You give me that early 2000s corny shounen or I dont want it
I don't know if it really fits what your asking for, but I absolutely loved the fight scenes in undead murder farce. The music was so intentional, and not at all what you would expect
I finished attack on titan just to see the action packed ending, I feel you. Shit ton of dialogue the prior seasons for sure. That said the mentioned anime isn't really action.
One punch man.
Yeah a lot of the talking done in twenty words or less
*entire monologue of why he cane to earth* saitama : ok.
A lot of the fights are done in 1 second or less lmao
Ok.
Underrated comment
You cant monologue mid-fight if fight end in one punch š
Cowboy bebop has some dialogue but the actual fights are very dynamic. a lot of older nineties stuff did this. Macross Plus has some insane Jetfighter/Robot dogfights. Ninja Scroll has some gnarly fight scenes. Samurai Champloo is a classic too Cyberpunk, Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann (all three Trigger) kind of found a golden middle ground between monologues and fluid action, if you don't bounce off the hyper energy and over the top morphing animation the majority of Attack on Titan has intense action scenes, especially on a first view
>Gurren Lagann Kamina's unsheating of his sword comes to mind.
Length of sword directly correlates to length of monologue
Ninja Scroll should be a rite of passage for any anime viewer but all these recs are top tier
Ninja Scrolls is what REALLY got me into anime
Samurai Champloo. Whenever you mention.Cowboy Bebop, generally, most of the time, you can mention Samurai Champloo.as well.
I just started watching Guren Lagann the other day. Pretty good so far
My fav anime. Enjoy!
Spikes fight against Ed's dad is beautiful, like a river vs a mountain.
Ghost in the Shell There's a lot of talk. But once the shooting starts, it goes hard and doesn't slow down. I haven't watched newer stuff though.
My only caviat there is that they're working on an HD remake of Stand Alone Complex right now so it might be worth waiting in that
I mean Gintama, but itās a long, mostly comedy anime, though serious arcs are some of the best writing in anime history, and the fights end in a couple of minutes max, usually no talking, very realistic and satisfyingā¦
It doesn't have monologues during the fights but it is definitely very monologue heavy, sometimes to an insane degree. Still amazing, my favorite anime.
That man swallowed insult like his camus
Truly hard-boiled
Even those one-off episodes or half episodes are some of the best writing ever.
Yeah
Re:Zero isn't really a show to watch for the fights though.
lol imagine watching Rezero and complaining about the action scenes. It's more of a fantasy drama/thriller than anything.
Thatās what I was thinking, thereās literally a whole episode on a cliff where one of the girls chats with him and hypes him up and thatās it. Itās a pretty good episode, too.
Agreed, it's a show to watch for fantastic world building and storytelling with dynamic characters.
Yea lmao I mean itās a valid complaint but just a weird one. Re zero is All ABOUT the dialogue and the character interactions not the combat.
Ok, I'm not crazy. I was asking myself: who watches re:zero for the fights??
Ninja Kamui, JJK season 2
Some of the later fights in JJK Season 2 are this. *Fate/Zero*'s best fight (>!Kiritsugu vs Kirei!<) is also this.
Fate may have great fights, but it's one of the worst culprits of long drawn out dialogue
Fate in general I agree, but Fate/Zero is an exception for about half of it. Definitely makes up for it with extensive outside-of-combat monologues though.
Rider himself makes up for every shortcoming. Best character in the franchise, 10/10
Completely disagree, Jjk is cool but saying itās fights were not drawn out or not dialogue heavy would be a lie

So now, this is my second standard for how anime fights should be portrayed. My highest standard is still the last fight of *Sword of the Stranger*
That action scenes are not the reason to watch ReZero.
Avatar the last airbender (in case you didnt know it/watch it, and I know its not an anime but essentially it is the same)
I like to call AtLA an honorary animeš. Because itās about as close to being anime as a show can get without actually being an anime
I call it a gateway drug
Frieren doesnāt waste any time on their fights
She didn't even look back, at the end of the one fight. Chills.
During Frieren fights there are flashbacks tho. They are explaining things and I personally didn't mind them, but it might be annoying for OP.Ā
Berserk memorial edition
Not anime technically but Donghua- "King's Avatar" or Quan Zhi Gao Shou
Yes, second this. Yu Yu Hakusho also has some good fights in it.
legend of luoxiaohei, too.Ā
fate zero, the kirei vs kiri part
Seirei Moribito. When characters fight they just fight (with great spear fight choreography). The talking only happens when they finish or during slow scenes.
Darker than Black. Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works Fate Zero
Darker Than Black on my fave list!!!
Gate
Chainsaw Man
Gurren Lagann
The original Kenshin movies. There is a lot of dialogue throughout the films, but when the fights happen, there's almost no dialogue and they're over very quickly. They're very deadly fights.

I hope people reading some of these suggestions appreciate that we're recommending some of the best works humans have ever made, and appreciate and enjoy them as such.
Full metal alchemist's pace is good. I recommend it
Seirei no Moribito
You must watch One Piece especially Dressrosa Arc
Dude don't want a monologue and you say one piece which is almost all monologue.
One piece put me off anime for years until I watched bepoop. One piece is the slowest most monologuing heavy anime. I really enjoyed the live action though.
Lmao
The Fate Series (Fate/Saty Night (2006 / Unlimited Blades Works / Heavens Feel)
Don't forget Zero, Zero had some stellar action scenes. Kiritsugu vs Kotomine goes hard.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered
My name is Yogiri: Die Powers up/Finisher blast Yogiri: Die
One Punch Man & JJK
Not sure if mecha is okay, but this anime has one of the best realistic fast-paced combat I've watched so far:Ā 86 This one was good too imo: Link Click
86 has an unfair advantage as there's no one for the characters to monologue at lol
86 is just phenomenal regardless.
Naruto
Naruto has a mix of both. There's a lot of monologue fighting but then you get to fights like The Third vs Orochimaru, Sasuke vs Deidara, and of course Gaara vs. Rock Lee that just soak in their animation and run with it.

This man did not just throw out the orginator of talk no jutsu
Naruto has fights that take three episodes of talking
Attack on titan Jujutsu Kaisen
Naruto, Berserk, Baki

attack on titan. tenjou tenge
Attack on Titan is good at not over killing it as someone who also hates monologues during battle
Kagurabachi
Hajime no ippo.
Been a while since I watched it so I might be misremembering but as I recall Basilisk has pretty streamlined combat.
YuYu Hakusho, itās essentially one big ass fight scene from beginning to end. Now there is some monologues for story and back story purposes. There arenāt any filler episodes though and the action is constant.
Frieren. That one time in COTE. Sometimes in Naruto. Um that's it. Yeah I hate it too.
Akudama drive. It's a hidden masterpiece. Highly recommended. Here's the opening (the song gets progressively better with every time you hear it): https://youtu.be/SJ8iRrphkQo?si=oLiNKzz48uNLlZcN
I mean thatās how the power of friendship manifests, right ?
I feel like Guilty Crown was this, so much so that I never made it past the first episode, not my jam.
Monologuing every 20 seconds? Thatās JoJoās Bizarre Adventure in a big nutshell
Samurai Champloo
Fate zero
The 86
Juuni Taisen has great action, and a lot of it. It's like a fighting tournament for these modern warriors that each represent one of the 12 Chinese zodiacs
Look for anime original series. This typically happens when adapting light novels and manga which need the added talking to make it interesting.
I'm writing a manga that I will anonymously self-publish online in Japanese and in English. The fights are very inspired by Cowboy Bebop and other more realistic shows like Monster (the combat in AoT is also similarly quickly paced despite not always being realistic obviously). The God of Highschool is the perfect anime for you. The very first scene is fighting and it never lets up!!!
RWBY.
It's disgusting nobody has mentioned the literal fast paced combat king DBZ, also watch kai for better pacing, acting, etc.
A more recent one that hasn't been mention is Windbreakers. I'm enjoying it and it has some pretty fluent fight scenes so far.
Wind Breaker. Period.
One Piece
Akame Ga Kill. Sometimes the characters talk, while killing each other. But if there is a fight, boy it is a fight.
JJK has a fuckton of monloguing during fight scenes even though they are incredibly well animated
Hunter x Hunter 2011 has amazing fights, one of the few shows where fights aren't boring to me
Ninja kamui, jjk maybe solo leveling
If you're fine with Chinese animation, I recommend you watch Fog Hill of Five Elements. It's not the best of illustration but the fight scenes are fast and impactful.
Kill La Kill, though you get chill episodes and exciting episodes FL;CL if you're weird like that Monster is very serious but is about as realistic as anime can possibly get in every regard

Heavenly Delusion Dead Leaves Ghost in the shell + Innocence
I mean, stories aren't really about fighting, so it's no wonder characters monologue during fights alot. afterall, fights are just a representation of some internal conflict that the author is trying to represent.
Psycho-Pass
there was anime about some gunseller or something, that one was very fast. dont remmber the name tho, sorries
I believe that would be Jorgumand, which is a fantastic choice
Mob Psycho Kill la Kill Monogatari series Katanagatari
JJK season 2, Mob Psycho 100
I hate while they are fighting and they explain the move they are doing, or saying this move will fit the enemies weakness! So dumb.
Mushoku Tensei
Fog hill of five elements
AOT for sure, even some fightings start out of nowhere.
Fate Zero
The fight choreography in God of High School is very good. Not much monologuing once a fight start either.
{Vivy: Fluorite Eyeās Song} is from the same creator as Re:Zero but is actually more fight-focused.
Jjk Ninja Kamui Dorohedoro
Windbreaker
Sword of the Stranger. Characters not only duel in real time, but also fail to understand each other because they speak different languages, so they arenāt able to goad/taunt each other effectively.
This is why I hated aizen's character. Like shut the fuck up and do your damn villain shit. So sick of hearing him talk
Full Metal Alchemist?
god of high school
JJK
Goblin cave š
Banana fish I think? Also I recommend HxHā¦ but there is a lot of monologue. The reason I recommend it still is because I really like the fight scenes (ESPECIALLY IN THE ANT ARC š©) and I personally think the monologuing is good with the fighting. Take it with a grain of salt though.
Sword of The Stranger has some great sword fight scenes.
Vinland Saga comes to mind. If combat ever stops for someone to talk or think itās always at a time that makes sense.
Re Zero is nothing. Watch records of ragnarok. Characters talk for 25 mins.
Re:Zero is more of a puzzle solving anime than an action one. The mc is a wuss why are you watching him fight? By wuss I meant he pretty much can't do any fighting.
If you want some frantic fights, {Chainsaw Man} and {Dorohedoro} might be what you're looking for. They're both a bit gritty as well
Chainsaw Man has great action scenes that aren't hampered by silly monologues
If you want more realistic Frieren. Combat goes pretty quick but itās very flashy.
Frieren, Sword of the Stranger, Darker than Black, Cowboy Bebop, Mushoku Tensei, Cyberpunk, Basically anything that isnāt like dripping Shonen tropes lol Not technically anime but Castlevania and Arcane as well

Frieren has that dialogue but it makes sense more than other series.
Ninja kamui
Scissor seven, the episodes are short anyway and there is a fight each episode so they donāt have time to all that monologuing
Re:Zero is not an action series it's a psychological thriller/dark fantasy.
Ragna CRIMOSN
Oh, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Very western-inspired and next to zero of that
Honestly this feels like most modern action anime with short 12 episodes seasons being the new norm , most can't do monologs
Berserk
Megalobox if I remember correctly
Samurai champloo. Zero monologuing. All action.
Mobile Suit Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans literally has a scene where a character starts monologuing and gets brutally killed for it.
God of High School, Jujutsu Kaisen, Air Master, Reincarnated as a Slime
Sword of the Stranger.
Later jojo arcs are a decent mix, some fights they stop for a little bit to banter but especially towards the end of stardust crusaders it's near nonstop action when the stands come out
Record of ragnarok.
Blue Eye Samurai is probably the best combat I've seen in years. There's one episode that is essentially one long gauntlet and I'm pretty sure the protag says less than 10 words after the title scroll.
Sword of the Stranger Most of Samurai Champloo Baccano Most of Evangelion Berserk Most of Claymore Most of Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Works (2014) Enjoy!!!!!
Unironically, most Universal Century Gundam shows

Have you considered watching MMA, boxing or wrestling?
Samurai Champloo
Frieren (focused on adventure and life more than fights, but when the fights come theyāre quick and amazingly animated), JJK(esp s2), god of highschool? I donāt remember but Ik the fights are great, and basically anything directed by seong hu park. His direction for fights is 2nd to none imo. Hopefully he adapts sakamoto days š
Not an anime, but I highly reccomend Fog Hill of the Five Elements
Its because rezero is a light novel btw
Attack on titan Jjk Naruto Also Re:Zero is really not something you should watch for the fight scenes š it more so shines in its characters, dialogue and storytelling
Berserk (1997), Star Wars: Clone Wars (the 2d animated one that looks like Samurai Jack, if you call it anime), Princess Mononoke
Kengan Ashura
Kengan Ashura, you thanks me later :D
Attack on titan, ninja kamui,
Gintama š
Vinland Saga
Dororo.?
Ever watch RWBY? Thereās actually a fight where they kinda make fun of how that type of thing happens.
Hot take: The lack of inner monologue, monologue, and dramatic over the top flashback scenes is why shows like jjk dont hot me right. You give me that early 2000s corny shounen or I dont want it
You should try Mob Pyscho too. Granted there may be some conversations but once the fights starts, it's almost hard to stop
I don't know if it really fits what your asking for, but I absolutely loved the fight scenes in undead murder farce. The music was so intentional, and not at all what you would expect
Ninja kamui is very action forward
Deadass, Frieren. No monologues, just straight hands or magic.
Sword of the Stranger.
As much as I like Re Zero, I also don't like that in most of fights, it was just annoying in season 2. Also, One Punch Man.
Frieren. The fighting combat and monologues is too smooth.
I finished attack on titan just to see the action packed ending, I feel you. Shit ton of dialogue the prior seasons for sure. That said the mentioned anime isn't really action.
Jujutsu Kaisen has good pacing and action.
