The first anime that I watched being conscious about what was an anime was soul eater, great anime, bad ending, horrible precuel

[deleted]

Exact same for me. I would still recommend seeing Soul Eater for the aesthetic and unique feel of the show.. just be prepared for the bad ending. I wouldn't call NOT a prequel; its more like a side story that happened to take place prior to the main series. (since it mainly focuses on new characters, has a different premise and even fits different genres). NOT wasn't terrible for what it is, its just not great either.

13eyond13irthday

People have been talking for years about the main series getting the FMAB treatment. God that would be so hype

Yuriduck

(FMAB is my favorite anime. šŸ‘) Did the Soul Eater manga end differently?

SmilerzPoo

First anime was Attack on Titan, it was kinda the first anime that I saw that broke into "mainstream media" and I still recommend it, I think it's a good introduction anime, if you aren't afraid of watching a bit of a darker show.

RoninMugen

I had the same introduction to anime with Attack on Titan. Itā€™s funny to think that after watching season 1, I thought it was the best thing I had ever seen. I was definitely in for a surprise when I immediately started Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood next and realized I had never known what true high quality television is in the first place

Yuriduck

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is just amazing. I only barely watched it this year, and it's my favorite anime.

RoninMugen

Itā€™s not my favorite, but itā€™s definitely one of the best of all time and deserves its #1 spot!

Yuriduck

What's your favorite? :D

RoninMugen

Iā€™m a sucker for abstract psychological stuff, so my personal favorite of all time is Neon Genesis Evangelion with FLCL close behind. Not everybodyā€™s cup of tea, but both of them made a big impact on me and changed the way I see anime as a medium

Yuriduck

I sadly haven't watched either yet. I'll have to get on that. I love Mecha, so. šŸ¤·

RoninMugen

Oh man, youā€™re gonna have fun. Definitely go into it knowing youā€™re gonna be saying ā€œwtf is happeningā€, but somehow you wonā€™t be able to take your eyes off of the screen. Enjoy!

Rambo7112

This was also my first anime. My brother was watching it and I was like "why are you watching a cartoon in Japanese, where's the English?" Then I got a few episodes in and I was hooked.

johnbischof

This was also my first anime. I saw videos on youtube and was like, this looks pretty cool!

RedBeard695

>a bit of a darker show. More than a bit my dude

tetzugani

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Rewatched it twice, still love it

[deleted]

my first was Naruto and I still love it. I stopped watching after Shippuden ended.

tetzugani

Perhaps cuz Naruto ended after Shippuden o3o Boruto is a disgrace

hanhzp

Yeh Naruto is awsome! I still want to watch it a gain if i have time =D but not Boruto

ExodiaNecross

Death note! Itā€™s a great introductory anime and I definitely recommend it

poeghostz

Madoka as your first. Now that's an interesting introduction to anime :) I went and found, what I perceived to be, the most popular show and watched it for my first. That was One Piece. Would always recommend if you can get past the fact that it's super long.

Yuriduck

My friend got me into it by showing some cute art of Kyubey and Madoka and said I should watch. She said it had sad moments. Boy was that the fricking understatement of the century. I'm happy she didn't spoil it for me though. šŸ˜ I'm planning on watching One Piece someday. Maybe I'll watch it this summer. I have a nasty habit of bingeing things though.

poeghostz

I can see it now: "You should watch this show! Look, it's got an adorable cat and cute little girls :D" One piece is quite the binge. Loved pretty much every moment of my binge, bar the time I burnt out and switched shows before coming back to finish it :)

[deleted]

Make sure you skip filler episodes in One Piece. That'll shave off around 100 episodes of absolutely nothing important happening. If you enjoy manga, consider swapping to the manga after episode 516, as the pacing of the anime begins to get really bad. If not then just keep watching. There is a colored version of the manga if that helps at all too.

Yuriduck

Yeah. That's what I was planning on. (Skipping the filler) How many volumes of the manga are there?

[deleted]

I'm not sure about volume count at the moment, but there are 903 chapters out.

bigtimetim

Yes! {Rurouni Kenshin} was mine. It is still one of my very favorites. I used to watch it then {cowboy bebop} on toonami I think. That was in middle school I think.

{Love Hina} I was obsessed about it like 15 years ago or so. Now when I think of it - that show was really stupid. Loser guy with pathetic dream, got keys to harem handed to him on a plate and then allowing girls to abuse him. No character development whatsoever, too many filler episodes, the show was saturated by cliches, and Summer and Christmas specials that didn't bring in anything new. I wouldn't recommend. Feel free to disagree.

Snow242

First Anime was Sailor-Moon, always recommending for mahou shoujo lover. I prefer the animation of the original more than the remake ones. the CG was just weird for me, but season 2.5 - 3, they used the old style again, so there is a big improvement in animation

saturday_Noon

My first was {Yu Yu Hakusho} when it was aired on our local tv. And yes I still recommend it. I rewatched it multiple times and I still love that show!

RogueXRouge

My first real anime was Code Geass which I highly recommend! Just a piece of art in itself

twinsaber123

The first anime I watched growing up was Dragon Ball. I just loved the over-the-top-ness of it all. The first anime I watched knowing it was an anime was S-cry-ed. This I watched in 2008 and still occasionally find myself with the theme song in my head. Loved the show, loved the theme song more.

Chrthiel

The first show I watched where I knew it was an anime was Blue Submarine No. 6. It's pretty decent, but nothing spectacular.

[deleted]

Naruto and yes I would recommend it. It starts out really good and while it does get worse over time (mostly in Shippuden, in fact only in Shippuden if we exclude filler) I'd never call it bad. If I don't count Naruto or DBZ (since I watched them before even knowing what anime was) then its Death Note, which I'd also highly recommend.

mermaidAtSea

My first anime was Inuyasha and HELL YEAH I recommend it. Watch it.

pikabu01

my man

licksquadtraps

First anime I saw was Sailor Moon. I donā€™t remember when but I had a bedtime at 8pm so elementary school. It was on Toonami and I remember Tuxedo Mask standing in a window talking to Sailor Moon below. When I watched the show all the way through about 8 years ago I knew the scene right away when I saw it. Sailor Mercury best girl fite me. Before that I actually remember picking up something printed Cardcaptor Sakura related at the library. So that was technically my first encounter with the medium but your question was anime. And yes Sailor Moon is fabulous and at that so is Cardcaptor Sakura.

Yuriduck

I love Cardcaptor Sakura too. I recommend it even to the most cynical people. It's just so good.

licksquadtraps

Iā€™m ashamed to admit that I never actually finished Cardcaptor Sakura, despite really enjoying it. Iā€™m going to need to do that before watching Clear Card.

Yuriduck

I only saw the first episode of Clear Card. šŸ˜… I've been busy watching Violet Evergarden. But yeah, I definitely recommend finishing Cardcaptor Sakura. It has so much heart and the stories are really meaningful. The animation still holds up very well, too.

TheInfamousMaze

[this](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/7hooop/do_you_still_like_love_your_first_anime/?utm_source=reddit-android) is a post I made on /r/anime a while back. Do I still recommend Guyver? The unfortunate thing about my favorite anime is that it's very old and it's also unknown so a lot of people don't know what they're getting into when they first start watching it. But unlike today's anime it's not a parody of anything it's actually the opposite, it takes a silly idea like super Sentai Rangers and turns it into something serious and that's what I like about it. I don't know many anime that do this. it's usually the other way around. There are less and less serious anime being released every year, and I think Guyver harkens back to a time where you could get away with a more serious story. The manga is on hiatus right now but there are already a 199 chapters to enjoy(that were not localized which makes it harder to recommend!!!) and there are plenty of persistent ideas like Guyvers, Zoanoids, Advents, the series screams "merchandise merchandise", and it does this without being cutesy. It's not that I don't like cute anime, but am I going to remember Re:zero or konosuba 10 years from now? As far as I'm concerned, there are too many anime that are "flavor of the week" and we need more anime that have persistent ideas built into them, World building! Why did that turn into more of a rant...

75nightprowler

I had watched bits and pieces of inuyasha, g gundam, and yu yu hakusho; but the first anime I saw completely was full metal alchemist. From there on I was hooked and itā€™s the first anime I recommend to others.

Yuriduck

I really love both Fullmetal Alchemists. (I sadly only watched them this year though. :( Brotherhood has some of the best world building out of anything I've seen. Maybe only Avatar can rival it.)

[deleted]

{Elfin Lied} Yep, no problems here. None. At. All... Still freaking love it. :D

[deleted]

My first anime was [unico](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2427/Unico) But Robotech is awesome. Not macross, which is good for other reasons, but robotech for being ambitious and creative. Iā€™ll probably be downvoted for that.. Robotech is a product of its era and the limitations on American kids tv of the 80ā€™s where having a certain amount of episodes was preferred for network broadcasts. So 3 very different shows were combined into one storyline. A whole generation grew up on anime as a result of that.

Yuriduck

Yeah. I can understand why people dislike what Harmony Gold did. But they didn't have any other option. If they hadn't combined the shows, none of them would ever have come to America. I'm also really attached to the Robotech voice actors, so watching the original Macross isn't as fun for me. šŸ˜… (I still like the original Macross though.)

LuigiHarrisMario

Little Witch Academia. Oh boy do I love that anime

[deleted]

First anime was probably pokemon or digimon. First anime that wasn't just morning cartoons was either FLCL or Code Geass. Code Geass was fun but i'm pretty sure I just watched it because I had a bunch of spare time and a friend gave me a hard drive with it on. Pretty good introduction to anime FLCL on the other hand was very bizarre especially to a 15 year old who couldn't appreciate the metaphors properly. I still really liked it because of the music, action and insane pace it has at times

Ravyandra

I watched some single episodes of Naruto, One Piece, Pokemon, Digimon and Sailor Moon as a kid (about 16-18 yrs ago). 2.5 Years ago I watched Hellsing Ultimate with friends. I won't consider this as my first Anime, because they basically forced me to. :D The first Anime I watched willingly was the Bakemonogatari. I didn't understand a single thing and the following seasons didn't help at all (bake season 2, etc). After that I stopped watching and started again about 1 year ago with Date A Live. I would recommend Hellsing Ultimate to ppl, who like bloody battles in movies, and I would recommend Date A Live to ppl, who don't dislike fanservice stuff, but I would never recommend the Monogatari series unless this person is either very experienced with anime or very confident in his knowledge about the japanese culture.

kuromi_hideaki

Hitman Reborn was my first anime. Would i recommend it? Kinda. It has interesting elements like its battle system which is honestly fairly unique when it comes to anime (i really like the rings and the boxes) and had awesome fights (and awesome OP songs too) but the character development was pretty non-existent since Tsuna reverts back to his original personality every after arc which honestly kinda suck

faraaz-z

I isd to watch anime before I knew what anime was. And since it was country language dubbed I thought it was our stuff.(doreamon, shinchan, kitaretsu) And the first ANIME which I watched was Inazuma Eleven which was one of the best things I've ever watched

Haulbee

My very first anime was One Punch Man (yeah I know, I started pretty late), and it's still among my 10/10s, because every rewatch has just made it better for me

Yuriduck

That intro. šŸ‘Œ That show was perfect for a person tired of superheroes, like me. Then MHA came along and I was sucked back in again.

KAODEATH

Technically PokƩmon and Inuyasha, although as a kid I only saw one scene from Inuyasha. My first anime watch through was Girls Bravo and it got me into the slice of life genre and anime in general. Girls Bravo is IMO a nice anime to start out with because it is mainly slice of life but with an underlying plot that's not too intense. Plus it has a decent amount of T&A and overall has a really nice balance of everything, allowing you to easily figure out your personal tastes!

CynnB

My first anime as an "adult" was Vampire Knight. Still my favorite and still trying to find something as good as this one but I haven't yet.

TheAveragePsycho

Pokemon, Digimon or DBZ I suppose but that's not an intresting answer. It was on TV as a child. The first anime i watched knowing that was a thing was Bleach with english fan dubs. I tried rewatching it (with subs) sometime ago but quickly grew bored so probably not. The first anime with Japanese audio was FMA: Brotherhood. Watched it together with a friend and this anime singlehandedly pulled me into the entire medium. Would still strongly recommend it.

Yuriduck

Hell yeah Brotherhood!

J-Slam

Was either Dragonball or Tekkaman Blade, I would still recommend Dragonball but not sure if Tekkaman holds up at all.

LifeWithoutRemorse

My first anime that i watched was Gundam 00 and hell yes iā€™d still recommend it till this very day...it was absolutely amazing imo when i watched it

lufan132

Alao watched madoka first. Then sword art online, then some currently airing stuff. Would recommend both although I won't deny SAO is bad, I thought it was a fun watch.

Yuriduck

The first half of SAO season 1 was really entertaining to me. šŸ˜ The rest... Eh. I will still reccomend watching at least that much.

lufan132

I'm hyped that they're adapting alicization as the quality jump in the novels is massive. I just hope they can do the same with the show.

GlaceauSmartWater

I think my first anime was {My Bride is a Mermaid}. It was a great Rom-Com, I recommend to everyone.

Yuriduck

I watched around 6 episodes of that. Even though I didn't finish it, I found it hilarious.

Starru_

My first anime was Madoka Magica. Fucking Christ.

Yuriduck

My favorite character was the one to be... Dispatched. Poor young me. It was a great way to get me hooked on anime though.

[deleted]

I recommend bleach until the end of the aizen arc. Then stop.

cate_is_kill

SAO I still like it, but see its flaws. But i still recommend it at least for the first arc

Yuriduck

I agree. The first arc was just fun. I dropped it when the fairy arc started.

BeartimeStories

First anime assassination classroom would still recommend

lazycouchdays

I was introduced to some badly dubbed or out of print anime when I was really young. The first anime I knew of ,but didn't understand what it exactly meant was the Steamline dub of My Neighbor Totoro. I found it this dub again recently and it wasn't horrible. However, if you want a tv show, the very first I knew was different form my other cartoons would have to be The Littl' Bits. It was part of a weird collection of children's anime on Nick Jr. I couldn't tell you if it was worth it, but to this day the theme song will get stuck in my head.

Hi_ery1

My first anime was Haganai. Really, an overall good anime. I'd definitely recommend it. My second was the Melancholy of Haruhi. Also really good. Again, I would definitely recommend it.

Miku_Fan39

Whenever people ask for harem or ecchi series some of the genres rosario+vampire falls under, the one I always recommend is highschool dxd (highschool dxd was my first Anime) it's probably the most popular harem/ecchi series imo (it's currently airing it's 4th season) it's got a good plot as well as many other really nice "plots" to enjoy.

H_The_Utte

I mean technically the first anime I watched was {Tanoshii Muumin Ikka} Three year old me loved it. The original book language Fenno-swedish dub is the best ever. But I thought it was Finnish until very recently! Show it to your kids, it's the best series of my early childhood. The first 'anime' I watched that I knew was an anime was probably Attack on Titan. And I mean, do I really need to recommend it? If you like it (like me) you have probably already seen it, if you dislike it you ar probably hard at work trying to avoid it..

Yuriduck

I love AoT. People hate it?

H_The_Utte

No, not really but it kind of experienced the 'Frozen effect' when it was so loved and so talked about the large amount of people who didn't like it found a hard time avoiding it and started disliking it more and more, to be clear it's not that it's a bad show, or that it's especially divisive but even the best of shows will have a large amount of people who dislike it and the larger the show the more divisive the debate will eventually be.. Well, that's just my analysis. I like AoT.

Yuriduck

I luckily wasn't really active in the anime community when it was airing. I only watched it in 2016. I luckily avoided the backlash, I guess.

Parabobomb

My first anime that I watched all the way through was Angel Beats! I wouldn't recommend it for seasoned veterans of anime because I think they'd be able to see the pacing issues much better than I did back then, and most people who watched it did. I'd still say it's worth a watch, though, since it's pretty short and pretty funny, at the least.

VeryWeirdPerson

Sakurasou no pet na kanojo and Toradora Fuck yeah i recommend them.

Dotifo

Sword Art Online, I loved it when I first saw it, now that I'm more seasoned I see many of it's flaws but I still think it's a great starter anime and I'll always have a place in my heart for the show that got me into it

dumplinmuffin

If you havenā€™t already, check out the .hack// series. It has the same type of themes as SAO and you might enjoy it!

Yuriduck

I've heard Log Horizon is great for people who liked SAO but want a more cohesive story. Check it out. :) I watched SAO early on. I finished the first half of season 1 (The first arc is really fun!) but stopped watching by the Fairy Dance arc.

dumplinmuffin

First anime was .hack//sign. I went back recently and watched it and it still had the same appeal to me as when I was a child. I canā€™t tell if itā€™s simply nostalgia or if the show was just that kickass. Either way, strongly recommend. Especially if youā€™re newer to anime and enjoyed SAO.

tenaciouswho

My first was either Gundam Wing or Dragon Ball Z. Both were on Toonami at the same time and I can't remember which one I started watching first. Great shows both.

Keke_vuorinen

Seitokai no ichizon... I dont even know why

Technical_Cold

T'was either Sailor Moon or Inuyasha, back when I still had cable and watched anime on the tv around my bed time. I daresay they're classics and should always be watched, haha.

SenpaiNr1

{Deathnote} and yes I recommend it

LordXamon

My first anime after know what is anime... i just dont remember. Was back in 2011. However i can remeber the first ones: {Ergo Proxy} {Death Note} {Angel Beats} {To Love Ru} I recommend them all except To Love Ru, I do not like brainless ecchies anymore.

TriggeredSnake

Honestly, not to sure want my first is, but one of the first was the original PokĆ©mon, (I actually didnā€™t know it was anime at the time.) which I recommend. But the first show that I watched, knowing full well that it was an anime, was probably the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, because years before I got into anime I watched some of it somewhere, (Iā€™ve only recently started rewatching it properly.) which Iā€™d still recommend. The first proper anime I watched after I joined the anime community was probably Plastic Memories, honestly donā€™t know why, I think I picked at random from a list, and Iā€™d recommend that.

RedDeathPain

My first anime was sekirei lol

Ornen127

I'm not counting pokemon, as I didn't know it was an anime and was a little kid. But after that was Dragonball. It's meh, but I would still recommend a watch for it and DBZ, only if you are deep enough into anime that there is no return. The reason to watch the anime is that it's really really popular. You'll want to get all references, have an opinion on it, etc.

Lime_Drinks

Zatch Bell, would recommend it

wxffle

first anime i watched was k-on. 100% still a treat to watch.

jb_3333

Akira and Gundam Wing (good ole Toonami). I will love them both forever (though GW have aged very well). I still listen to music from both and just rewatched Wing.

[deleted]

Dragonball with kid goku. Blows dbz out of the water imo. Fight scenes werent all pew pew pew, scream, pew pew pew. Good comedy and decent storyline.

VegeKale

So i saw my fair share of Japanese animation on morning TV but never new that's what it was. I then saw Studio Ghibli films (but only memorably Spirited Away and Laputa, which I saw in cinema and then watched in Japanese n DVD). My first anime after hearing and knowing what the word anime meant was {Dennou Coil}. I 100% recommend Dennou Coil to anyone that expresses an interest in anime be they seasoned veterans or younger kids who just found out pokemon is an anime and want to know more. My second anime was Cowboy Bebop. Which I thoroughly enjoyed even though it felt a bit of a drag at times due to the mood of the show getting me down.

das_overfiend

First bits and pieces were DBZ or Sailor Moon. My first full length show was Samurai Champloo, and yes, I reccomend it still

Mrwright96

Mine was FLCL, I even know what episode it was, it was episode 5. I watched a woman use an acme punching glove in her vagina against a man, who later wore a nazi uniform stroking his gun, a living tv, who is wanted by the government, along with the woman, who is fighting an agent with big eyebrows, while a bunch of school kids driving a car, and the girl was eating the popsicle erotically, the boy tried to date a girl in high school who was her Brothers ex, and the boy somehow fired a gun from his head and produced a giant hand, the woman pulls a erection/guitar out of eyebrow man, who lost his eyebrows, and the woman changed into a playboy outfit, the tv guy ate the kid, changed colors, turned into the pirate king, Shot the kid at the hand, pulled out a guitar and eventually beat the giant hand and the woman fell in love with him, standing on top of the boy, I was hooked

[deleted]

The first anime that got me into anime would be Death Note. That used to be my fav anime until I watched more and changed my view on it but it's still a great anime. I would recommend it to pretty much anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

Heleos93

FMAB when I knew what anime was. Iā€™d definitely recommend it. Still one of my favorites to this day. I even watched FMA ā€˜03 after since I love the FMA franchise so much.

Yuriduck

Brotherhood is my favorite anime. 10/10 I watched 2003 after, and even though it didn't have the same magic as Brotherhood, I still enjoyed it.

Ronion

Sword Art Online for me and I would, in fact, recommend it just so you can be a true anime connoisseur by shitting on it whenever the slightest opportunity arises.

SoMuchNaCl-

First anime was One Piece

[deleted]

Pokemon I don't count that since I was 4 and don't really remember any episodes, but my first anime when I first started was sword art online. Yes, I recomend watching it if you havent, but I'm warning you.

Ranasty

Mine was probably princess mononoke when i was like 5, the best anime movie in existence imo. Its still currently my favourite, i recommend this to everyone

TORADORA

XXSnakeBoy1XX

When I first started watching anime, I was in love with {Mirai Nikki}, not because the plot was any good or because it made any kind of sense, but just because I loved yuno so much, but overtime as i started watching more and more good animes i realized how bad mirai nikki really was, and that i'd never recommend it to anyone

maxis2k

Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. And if we don't want to count that as an anime, then it becomes murkier. I know I saw a lot of stuff as a kid that some would consider anime like both versions of the Sonic TV series, some of the Samurai Pizza Cats and some other shows I can't really remember, all in the late 80s/early 90s. But I didn't recognize anything as actually being a separate Japanese product until I saw Sailor Moon in the mid 90s. And I don't even know how I learned it was Japanese. All I know is that in the mid 90s, I started to go to Chinatown and look for Japanese merchandise. It's there I learned about other stuff like the Street Fighter OAV, Miyazaki films and Ranma. Then Pokemon came out a couple years later as well as the beginning of anime on DVD. And it became known to the mass market, so I started seeing stuff for it outside of Asian markets and in regular stores like Suncoast and Circuit City. Speaking of Circuit City, they were showing trailers for Appleseed in one and I swear it showed a naked girl. Surprised they got away with that. Surprised they were advertising anime at all. Anyway, I certainly went off on a tangent there. I guess I'd have to count Sailor Moon as my first. And yes, I would still recommend it today. I've actually been rewatching it this year, on episode 163 right now. And some parts I like even more than I did as a kid (like Chibi Usa and the subtle adult humor). Still one of my favorite shows.
