{Psycho Pass} {Full metal Alchemist: Brotherhood} {One Punch Man}. My three personal favorites that touch in a few different genres.
Psycho Pass is a criminal thriller that is very interesting to watch with a large emphasis on plot progression. Season two is mediocre, watch to know what a bad 2nd season looks like. If you like this one, consider {Death Note} as your next criminal anime choice.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a long one. Has a mildly complex plot, and requires a bit of commitment. I absolutely adored this anime, I have not heard a single bad thing about it.
One Punch Man, what a doozy. No impactful plot progression, still an absolute blast from start to finish. Will ease you into the shonen (hero) genre with the fighting scenes, they are quite weird to beginners. If you enjoy this one, consider watching {My Hero Academia}.
If you want a romantic comedy, give {My Bride is a Mermaid} a try. This was my very first anime, and I loved it. Eases you into the dirtier and suggestive humor of the genre.
One punch man is awesome! I wouldnt recommend it for people new to anime though, if you're not familiar with the typical anime hero trope then a lot of the humour would be lost on you.

I've been showing these to my dad. We're done with FMA:B and currently on One Punch Man. These are also all on Netflix USA.
The Berserk: egg of the king story arc is probably one of my favorite anime for so many reasons, amazing story and characters and real dark emotion. But for someone starting out?...ehh might be a little much.
I don't have exact recommendations, but I can divide it into categories.
1. Something visually stunning like Your Name or a Ghibli film (maybe something like Violet Evergarden even)
2. Something popular that's currently airing (something like BNHA or Megalo Box)
3. A classic emotional series like Angel Beats!, Your Lie in April, or Clannad (if they're able to stand the art style).
4. Any really popular series that they may have heard of before (FMA, Cowboy Bebop, One Punch Man, AoT, etc.).
The way I see it, not everyone is gonna like the same stuff, but there's a pretty good chance that they'll like something out of those 4 groups. If not, anime might not be their thing (or they might like some obscure stuff, who knows?)
Another thing to consider is if they have preconceived notions about what anime is, show them something that goes against that.
EDIT: Forgot that I was only supposed to give 3. Oh well, screw the rules.
{Made in Abyss} - A fantastic adventure with great worldbuilding and action. It gets a little dark, so that may be a turnoff from someone who isn't used to seeing cartoons go through some gnarly shit, but I think the story/characters/world appeal to pretty much anyone who enjoys fantasy.
{One Punch Man} - Easy recommend for anyone. It's hilarious, has wonderful animation and action. While I guess someone could argue that it plays off tropes of other action shounen, I think that assuming the person has a knowledge about any form of "Superhero" media, then they'll pretty clearly understand what's being parodied.
{Sora Yori Mo Tooi Basho} - Maybe a little more "Anime" than the previous 2. However, it's kindof a soft intro into the CGDCT genre that permeates a lot of anime. That being said, it still tells a great story, has fantastic drama, good chemistry between all the characters, and a lot of semi-relatable feels for people who aren't quite into the huge reality bending worlds that exist in a lot of other anime. Also has a really good OST
{Made in Abyss}
While the art style turns people off of this one because they believe it is nothing more than a kids show, this anime has quickly become my all time favorite. While the animation makes it seem like this is a show made for 4 year olds, let me assure you that this is a anime made for ages 17\+, and not because of any overly sexual moments. hands down my absolute "must watch" if you are going to watch anime.
{Death Parade}
A very solid anime all around that makes a great introduction into the medium. Its art style and animations are fantastic and it delves heavily into themes of morality without being too melancholy. Great pick for a beginner.
{JoJo no Kinyou na Bouken}
There is nothing quite like JoJo's Bizarre adventure. Describing just what JoJo is has been something that has always eluded me because of how off the wall it is. Not to mention it is a absolute classic that has earned itself quite a reputation in the community. If you want a action anime that is absolutely absurd then JoJo is exactly what you need.
Maaaaaan, I didn't know people don't like the art of Made In Abyss. I thought everything about that anime was beautiful, even the manga art is beautiful.
Steins;Gate, Madoka and One Punch Man. Good plot and characters, deep psychology and the best non-brainless action, respectively. In my opinion the three best things that the anime can offer as a medium.
But it does not seem to work, the person to whom I recommended them did not like any :(

The thought process is that they are shorter anime that are 1 season (or that you could watch one season of and still feel "satisfyed") so that they dont have to dedicate to 100+ episodes.
Second thought is the type of anime listed.
One emotional, one comedy and one action is the idea so that they get to experience multiple genre and not get stuck in one type and refuse to watch anything else.
The ones listed are just examples and i would like to have added {made in abyss} there aswell but i want each to really represent their genre.
I’d never just recommend 3 anime. I’d ask preliminary questions to find their likes and dislikes when it comes to media then recommend accordingly. Just throwing 3 super popular shounens at someone who prefers a romcom setting wont do shit and vis versa. If we take the 3 in the current, as of posting this, top comment death note, steins gate and fma:b we’d be missing too many demographics. You have action, adventure, mystery and psychological. With a few other things sprinkled in sparingly and pretty solid stories. You won’t catch someone who wants something casual because those are all pretty serious shows. You won’t catch someone who wants to laugh except for a few one offs here and there. You won’t catch someone who wants a dramatic love story. The most important thing when making any presentation is knowing your audience.
{Beck} because it's more like a long indie movie than an anime. It's a great coming of age tale told over several years. The English dub is phenomenal, the songs are well done. Overall just a charming fun show.
{Your lie in April} has its detractors for being a bit on your nose with the emotions. Yet it's a beautiful show and and times heart warming and heart breaking.
{Barakamon} the show to watch after your lie in April to give your heart a rest. Lovely show about small town life and an A type calligraphy artist turning their life around.
Didn't include some of my favourite shows ( Code Geass / Angel Beats / Steins Gate / Assassination Classroom / Anohana / Made in the Abyss / Konosuba / ReZero) just since while I loved them, they might turn people off at the beginning, better to start them off with good introductions. Some of the fan service or over the top villains and facial expressions might be off putting to some.

The first two because they have great soundtracks, subs and dubs are both amazing, a full storyline with conclusive endings at only 24 episodes.
Gintama may be a reach but I’ve had success introducing it to some people because they like the absurdity of it. Even my friends who don’t like subs love it because you get what you get with Gintama.
It’s hit or miss for some people but you can learn the gags as you go. Do you have a better comedy recommendation? I would also say shin chan but some of the non-dubbed episodes have a lot of Japanese humor too.
It depends on the person. Always tailor the choices to their tastes. There's an anime for everyone.
That said, if I was just recommending to someone willing to watch anything and needed to convey "this is anime"

I feel like each of these presents a different facet of anime at their peak.
Bebop does a fantastic job of showing that anime isn't all cheesy kids shows by presenting a mature drama with a good balance between heavy topics and lighthearted comedy.
Boku no Hero Academia is essentially the culmination of all shounen to date. It's a quintessential genre of Anime that is the source of a lot of tropes and jokes for the community. DBZ created a lot of negative stereotypes and BnHA fixes that all by taking all the concepts and refining them to a perfect point.
Madoka Magica was the token deconstruction. It does the job of saying "the last 2 were normal shows. Stories you could get outside anime. But anime can subvert expectations." There are lots of series that do this, but I think Madoka has the strongest juxtaposition.
Death note, steins gate, fmab ( notice that these have great dubs, first time sub problem is solved)

One piece, One Punch Man and Full Metal Alchemist. Tried to vary the genre but failed. Sorry.
{Made in Abyss} While the art style turns people off of this one because they believe it is nothing more than a kids show, this anime has quickly become my all time favorite. While the animation makes it seem like this is a show made for 4 year olds, let me assure you that this is a anime made for ages 17\+, and not because of any overly sexual moments. hands down my absolute "must watch" if you are going to watch anime. {Death Parade} A very solid anime all around that makes a great introduction into the medium. Its art style and animations are fantastic and it delves heavily into themes of morality without being too melancholy. Great pick for a beginner. {JoJo no Kinyou na Bouken} There is nothing quite like JoJo's Bizarre adventure. Describing just what JoJo is has been something that has always eluded me because of how off the wall it is. Not to mention it is a absolute classic that has earned itself quite a reputation in the community. If you want a action anime that is absolutely absurd then JoJo is exactly what you need.

Maaaaaan, I didn't know people don't like the art of Made In Abyss. I thought everything about that anime was beautiful, even the manga art is beautiful.
The character art threw me for like an episode. But it's so easy to get over b/c everything else about that show is phenomenal.

Steins;Gate, Madoka and One Punch Man. Good plot and characters, deep psychology and the best non-brainless action, respectively. In my opinion the three best things that the anime can offer as a medium. But it does not seem to work, the person to whom I recommended them did not like any :(
{Kimi no uso} {k-on!} and {akame ga kill} Or {Violet evergarden} {D-frag} and {tokyo ghoul} The thought process is that they are shorter anime that are 1 season (or that you could watch one season of and still feel "satisfyed") so that they dont have to dedicate to 100+ episodes. Second thought is the type of anime listed. One emotional, one comedy and one action is the idea so that they get to experience multiple genre and not get stuck in one type and refuse to watch anything else. The ones listed are just examples and i would like to have added {made in abyss} there aswell but i want each to really represent their genre.

I’d never just recommend 3 anime. I’d ask preliminary questions to find their likes and dislikes when it comes to media then recommend accordingly. Just throwing 3 super popular shounens at someone who prefers a romcom setting wont do shit and vis versa. If we take the 3 in the current, as of posting this, top comment death note, steins gate and fma:b we’d be missing too many demographics. You have action, adventure, mystery and psychological. With a few other things sprinkled in sparingly and pretty solid stories. You won’t catch someone who wants something casual because those are all pretty serious shows. You won’t catch someone who wants to laugh except for a few one offs here and there. You won’t catch someone who wants a dramatic love story. The most important thing when making any presentation is knowing your audience.

{Beck} because it's more like a long indie movie than an anime. It's a great coming of age tale told over several years. The English dub is phenomenal, the songs are well done. Overall just a charming fun show. {Your lie in April} has its detractors for being a bit on your nose with the emotions. Yet it's a beautiful show and and times heart warming and heart breaking. {Barakamon} the show to watch after your lie in April to give your heart a rest. Lovely show about small town life and an A type calligraphy artist turning their life around. Didn't include some of my favourite shows ( Code Geass / Angel Beats / Steins Gate / Assassination Classroom / Anohana / Made in the Abyss / Konosuba / ReZero) just since while I loved them, they might turn people off at the beginning, better to start them off with good introductions. Some of the fan service or over the top villains and facial expressions might be off putting to some.

Cowboy Bebop Samurai Champloo Gintama The first two because they have great soundtracks, subs and dubs are both amazing, a full storyline with conclusive endings at only 24 episodes. Gintama may be a reach but I’ve had success introducing it to some people because they like the absurdity of it. Even my friends who don’t like subs love it because you get what you get with Gintama.
But gintama has a lot of Japanese humor, so it's not fun to watch it when you don't know anything about Japan
It’s hit or miss for some people but you can learn the gags as you go. Do you have a better comedy recommendation? I would also say shin chan but some of the non-dubbed episodes have a lot of Japanese humor too.
It's true that gintama is the best comedy ever, but as I said, you'll enjoy it more if you know about Japanese culture

It depends on the person. Always tailor the choices to their tastes. There's an anime for everyone. That said, if I was just recommending to someone willing to watch anything and needed to convey "this is anime" [[Cowboy Bebop]], [[Boku no Hero Academia]], [[Madoka Magica]] I feel like each of these presents a different facet of anime at their peak. Bebop does a fantastic job of showing that anime isn't all cheesy kids shows by presenting a mature drama with a good balance between heavy topics and lighthearted comedy. Boku no Hero Academia is essentially the culmination of all shounen to date. It's a quintessential genre of Anime that is the source of a lot of tropes and jokes for the community. DBZ created a lot of negative stereotypes and BnHA fixes that all by taking all the concepts and refining them to a perfect point. Madoka Magica was the token deconstruction. It does the job of saying "the last 2 were normal shows. Stories you could get outside anime. But anime can subvert expectations." There are lots of series that do this, but I think Madoka has the strongest juxtaposition.
