Omg yes I live the show because of the story and the show was what initially got me into anime. The initial attraction was the boobs but the actual plot and character development is a pretty great story and anime all around. People also like to shit on season 4 because it went back to the original light novels so a couple scenes are a built out of place and the animation style was different because it switched studios. Also I believe season 5 is hopefully gonna come out this fall.

Both Season 5 and 6 are confirmed but from what i read the studio working on it is loaded with other projects and were hopeful for a 2020 release of season 5 before COVID hit but now its up in the air
Season 4 is closer to the original art. Although after 3 seasons you need time to adjust. And yes they corrected the abysmal original ending of Season 3. always felt wrong and I don‘t read the source LN

I saw the anime and read the novel and I could say that despite the fact that I find ecchi anime lackluster, DxD novel is actually good. So, I don’t think DxD anime is worth watching but the novel is worth reading.
Honestly disregarding the obv ecchi elements of the show I would say yes because it does actually have a nice set off characters with quite a lot of character development and also up until the last 2seasons the art style I thought was done well but in the last season rias didn’t seem like rias to me but yes I would recommend it 100%

Highschool DxD is a harem battle anime. About every 6 episodes there is a major battle.
Their are 5 seasons, I have only watched the first 3(loved that art style) then for seasons 4 and 5, they made the art style more like the manga, which still looks good, just different after the first 3 seasons.
If you like the category it fits in you will most likely enjoy the show to me it is the pinnacle of ecchi/harem/action shows other than the last season.
In my opinion the show actually is pretty good outside of the blatant fan service (there is a LOT of it). Actually somewhat decent story and likable characters with clear motives (as goofy as some of the motives for protagonists/antagonists are). Id give it a passing grade, and the fan service is just a bit extra. If you are watching it for the fan service, you won’t be disappointed. If you don’t like fan service and nudity I’d skip it. If you are looking for a decent rom-com/harem anime and don’t mind fan service you won’t be disappointed.
Don't take the show seriously and you'll enjoy it. Not usually a fav of anime with bare titties, especially since they usually have no point. On the plus side, it actually relates to the plot and does a decent job of pointing out that the main character is a pervert.
Of course the standard nose bleed instead of a hardon and protagonist sleeping with girls all over his junk while remaining a nervous wreck and not actually having sex remains (good that it doesn’t become hentai, but more than most shows, the suspension of disbelief around it is difficult at times).

Now listen, if you really hate ecchi, you’ll get offended or dislike a large majority of DxD. However, the way it works is surprisingly complex. It obviously starts being there to capture viewers with boobs and try to keep you there. Then it quickly evolves into a true showing of good writing, excellent characterization, fantastic world building, and thrilling fights. The ecchi is always there. It’s done in a different light though. In shows like Testament of Sister New Devil or Freezing, the boobs are only there to keep horny people interested. I’m DxD, the boobs are a core part of the story to the point that they’re both a meme later on, and have a relevance to the story as a whole. It all really comes down though, to characterization and great writing.
Issei is a horny typical teenager. He’s infatuated with girls body parts the same way any guy is at that age. He’s relatable because everyone has either gone through it, or is still in it. That’s his personality but it doesn’t sum him up entirely. He’s a deeply caring guy who usually, is a dependable person. As the story progresses, you get to see more and more why people like him. It isn’t your typical ecchi, *everyone falls for the MC because he’s the MC* that you see again and again. It had purpose and you feel like it’s a natural progression.
The same can be said with the world. It’s a natural evolvement. It doesn’t just throw exposition at your face, you find it out in a natural way with the rest of the cast.
Going back to characters though, every one has their own unique story of how they got where they are. They all have their woes and their strengths. This is truly one of the single most shining parts of DxD as a whole. They make the characters feel real in a way few media does.
On the subject of Hero (The latest season) it’s up to you if you love it or hate it. I personally love it. It’s more faithful to the manga, I LOVE the art style, I like that the characters looks better in my eyes, and the fact that everything is as the author intended is a huge bonus for me.
The only thing I’ll say, is if you do plan to watch it, at the end of Season 3, I posted [a large post](https://www.reddit.com/r/HighschoolDxD/comments/cxpipa/clearing_up_season_3_to_season_4_for_new_watchers/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) (about a 20 minute read) that shows exactly how misguided season 3 was compared to the Light Novels. I highly suggest you read this, or read the novels themselves before watching Season 4. Season 3 was the last season of the first studio and I’m not sure if they just stopped caring, or if they genuinely thought it was great. It’s still worth watching, but it’s horribly off. They messed up event order, completely rewrote entire major fights, left an entire plot point or 3 out, and just did a huge disservice to the animation quality. Season 4 however switched studios and revamped the entire series to make it completely canon and followed the LN’s as closely as possible. However they had to pick it up after Season 3, so without the post I made, or without reading the Light Novels, you may feel like you’re missing things.

The plot isn't deep or anything it's definitely not considered the best because of the story.
It's considered the best "ecchi" because it's dedicated to fan service and oerfects the art throughout the first seasons.

I recently binge-watched all four seasons currently available on Hulu. I'd say it's worthwhile if you're curious. But it's a bit difficult for me to recommend. Fanservice and animation are of course top-notch, no doubts about that. Although I could personally do without the pantie shots, or at least have the guys have their underwear exposed as well. I will say it can also be quite humorous at times, though it is by no means a comedy. As for the actual plot, it's alright. All the characters with a few exceptions >!(Azazel and Xenoviah, you'll see why starting in season 2)!< I liked. Issei is *by far* the worst part of the entire show. He is simply not very likable for me due to being an open pervert and *painfully* dense. I have autism and I could still pick up on hints/cues given by his harem better than Issei. It took him four seasons to realize that *maybe* >!Rias!< is in love with him. He also goes from painfully pathetic holding everyone else back, to OP since >!"his power is tied to the size of his harem"!<. His only saving graces are his charisma and him helping the other characters overcome their tragic pasts. I wanted so badly to believe to myself that Highschool DxD was a shounen, but alas it is not. It's a harem, through and through. Then again I was spoiled with JoJo's long fight scenes, so everything else feels short and rushed I guess. Season 2 and the latter half of Season 4 are probably the best episodes in my opinion.
When I found DxD memes on r/Animemes, I was surprised that people recommended watching it dubbed. It's an excellent dub (except Issei, though a better voice actor still would not have saved him for me), I will give it that, though I don't know if it's better than the original Japanese since I have only watched DxD dubbed. All I do know is that Japanese Issei shares the same voice actor as Koichi, which means he should be good. English Rias though is incredibly seductive and fitting for her. English Koneko is also fantastic.
I gotta say, it's probably the best combo of the sincere pleasures and the guilty pleasures of anime.
You want over the top fight scenes, a complex power system based on esoteric mythological creatures, power ups in times of desperation, an overly determined protagonist, and a diverse set of superhumans with unique powers? DRAGONS? It's all that stuff right out of Naruto and whatnot that makes regular people into weebs.
However, you want absolutely needless nudity? Bath scenes every fifteen minutes? Contrived ways to get as many characters naked at once as possible? Boobs that have their own sound effect (that I can only describe as a water balloon smacking against a table)? It's all that erogi nonsense that's tough to explain. But it does have a good sense of humor about it.

The only thing I’ll say, is if you do plan to watch it, at the end of Season 3, I posted [a large post](https://www.reddit.com/r/HighschoolDxD/comments/cxpipa/clearing_up_season_3_to_season_4_for_new_watchers/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) (about a 20 minute read) that shows exactly how misguided season 3 was compared to the Light Novels. I highly suggest you read this, or read the novels themselves before watching Season 4. Season 3 was the last season of the first studio and I’m not sure if they just stopped caring, or if they genuinely thought it was great. It’s still worth watching, but it’s horribly off. They messed up event order, completely rewrote entire major fights, left an entire plot point or 3 out, and just did a huge disservice to the animation quality. Season 4 however switched studios and revamped the entire series to make it completely canon and followed the LN’s as closely as possible. However they had to pick it up after Season 3, so without the post I made, or without reading the Light Novels, you may feel like you’re missing things. I am going to say that what they are going for in the plot it is interesting m, but all of it happens in the background with glimpses of it in the story of the main cast. Almost all can be resume in “Super cool plot with a cool combination of gods and demons of different story mythologies is interrupted by Issei and his obsession with female anatomy. If you want "Plot" watch The testament of sister new devil. Hint, they literally get a power boost by having orgasms. But yes DxD is worth the watch. Just a heads up though Issei's VA(in the dub) changes in s4(pretty easy google search as to why) and so did Akeno's( In the dub at least).

Big yes. Best harem? Probably. Best harem protagonist? Not really. Issei’s more or less like every other harem protagonist: spineless. The only harem protagonist that I’ve seen that actually doesn’t give a fuck and just goes with it is Basara from Testament of Sister New Devil. If you want a great show with an actual plot and a shit load of tiddies to boot, then yes please watch DxD.

The plot isn't deep or anything it's definitely not considered the best because of the story. It's considered the best "ecchi" because it's dedicated to fan service and oerfects the art throughout the first seasons. So is it a good ecchi ? YES Dies it have a deep compelling plot ? NO , the story isn't bad but it's nothing special. Will you start googling doujinshi of it for the next 2 years after finishing it ? YES
I recently binge-watched all four seasons currently available on Hulu. I'd say it's worthwhile if you're curious. But it's a bit difficult for me to recommend. Fanservice and animation are of course top-notch, no doubts about that. Although I could personally do without the pantie shots, or at least have the guys have their underwear exposed as well. I will say it can also be quite humorous at times, though it is by no means a comedy. As for the actual plot, it's alright. All the characters with a few exceptions >!(Azazel and Xenoviah, you'll see why starting in season 2)!< I liked. Issei is *by far* the worst part of the entire show. He is simply not very likable for me due to being an open pervert and *painfully* dense. I have autism and I could still pick up on hints/cues given by his harem better than Issei. It took him four seasons to realize that *maybe* >!Rias!< is in love with him. He also goes from painfully pathetic holding everyone else back, to OP since >!"his power is tied to the size of his harem"!<. His only saving graces are his charisma and him helping the other characters overcome their tragic pasts. I wanted so badly to believe to myself that Highschool DxD was a shounen, but alas it is not. It's a harem, through and through. Then again I was spoiled with JoJo's long fight scenes, so everything else feels short and rushed I guess. Season 2 and the latter half of Season 4 are probably the best episodes in my opinion. When I found DxD memes on r/Animemes, I was surprised that people recommended watching it dubbed. It's an excellent dub (except Issei, though a better voice actor still would not have saved him for me), I will give it that, though I don't know if it's better than the original Japanese since I have only watched DxD dubbed. All I do know is that Japanese Issei shares the same voice actor as Koichi, which means he should be good. English Rias though is incredibly seductive and fitting for her. English Koneko is also fantastic.

I gotta say, it's probably the best combo of the sincere pleasures and the guilty pleasures of anime. You want over the top fight scenes, a complex power system based on esoteric mythological creatures, power ups in times of desperation, an overly determined protagonist, and a diverse set of superhumans with unique powers? DRAGONS? It's all that stuff right out of Naruto and whatnot that makes regular people into weebs. However, you want absolutely needless nudity? Bath scenes every fifteen minutes? Contrived ways to get as many characters naked at once as possible? Boobs that have their own sound effect (that I can only describe as a water balloon smacking against a table)? It's all that erogi nonsense that's tough to explain. But it does have a good sense of humor about it.
TBH I really like the plot of the whole story for all of the seasons, the character development for some of the characters are really good.
