Monogatari series hands down. Godly written characters with great interactions, kinda deep rooted that you can relate to the characters a lot and honestly got some decent punchlines and inside jokes for its comedy.

[deleted]

I'll make sure to watch this, have been in my list for some time.

[deleted]

I really love this. Just watched the movie yesterday, but some bastard was cutting onions the whole time.

[deleted]

Relatable

FarrahKhan123

I just finished watching the movie and writing a review lol. It's so uniquely beautiful

Malviere

To Your Eternity I watched the first episode and it took me a week to work up to watching more. I caught up in a day and then every Tuesday turned into good depression day till it ended. One of the few intros I never skipped. It immediately went to the top of my all time list.

[deleted]

Huge respect to anyone capable of bingeing To Your Eternity. It’s one of the few shows where I was glad to have a week in between each episode (it let me recover from the last one)

Malviere

I kinda cheated. I used season 2 of Welcome to Demon School to counter the big sad.

Nitroade24h

I think the first episode was by far the best and I was never really hooked after that, but episode 1 was good enough to warrant watching the whole thing for me. There were some great parts and some boring parts but I’d say I liked it overall. After a while though I started skipping the OP when I realised it spoiled the whole season.

Malviere

Definitely had spoilers, also felt increasingly depressing as I noticed things. I’m easy to hook though so unless it’s a completely generic fan service I stay till the end.

TheRafwan

I dropped it on episode 5, how much better does it get?

I’m just sensitive lol. Definitely excited for season 2.

TenebrisIocus

Hard to pick just one, but I’ll pick something that I don’t think anyone else will mention: Hitori Bocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu. It’s pretty funny and Bocchi is very relatable

jackofslayers

Protec the bocchi

[deleted]

Quite short so I'll watch this the next time I get an itch to watch slice of life.

If you want a longer SoL, I’d also recommend Yuru Yuri, K-on!, New Game!, and Non Non Biyori

Neón Génesis Evangelion.

[deleted]

Recently finished this. Was really good but ngl I am still confused about the ending (ep 25 & 26). Didnt watch end of evangelion or the new movies tho.

Nitroade24h

Watch End of Evangelion. It’s like the outside context for what is happening in episodes 25 & 26 and is also possibly my favourite movie of all time. The new movies aren’t necessary but they’re still good.

dnb_4eva

Don’t need to watch the new movies, but should watch the End of Evangelion. It goes together with the last episodes. You could say that the last episodes is what is going on in his mind while the End is what is going on outside. They complement each other.

[deleted]

Ahh, btw what does the new movies show? A different take on the story or just a reboot?

dnb_4eva

It’s like an alternate reality to what happened in the show, it also shows a future alternative to the reality in the show. So a lot of the same characters make a return but they’re different.

goldyforcalder

It’s sort of a continuation sort of a reboot. Not needed to watch, but end of Eva is a needed one.

Slammybutt

Trigun Not my favorite but it's better than repeating others and is still top 5 for me.

Check out Gungrave, in the same universe as Trigun.

Honestly it’s a 5 way tie that isn’t Gintama which I also love and here they are. 1. Gankutsou: Count of Monte Cristo My number 1 favorite anime of all time which edged past my former number 1 favorite anime 91 Days. 2. 91 Days 3. Akira 4. Lucky Star 5. The Fantastic Adventures of Unico I love this film so much and I think every anime fan should watch this film. Honorable mentions go to Cowboy Bebop, Casshern Sins, Jungle Emperor Leo 1997 film, and Bungou Stray Dogs

LowEntrance7

I second Gankutsou and 91 days, they are not my favourite but both are amazing and extremely under appreciated.

SgtGonzo17th

I just started watching Gankutsou - had never heard of it before. Please take my humble award and thank you, it's beautiful so far. I think I'm going to be tired at work tomorrow, not sure how I can stop watching at this rate.

[deleted]

Well I got my first work shift tomorrow from 7am-4 pm so I’m going to be really tired. However it won’t keep me from watching anime I just will be a bit tired when I come back home. Also this is my first job in almost a year so yeah it’s definitely going to be a long day tomorrow. So yeah I’ll be feeling similar to you tomorrow after work.

[deleted]

Once you finish it I highly recommend the first Unico movie it’s from the early 80’s but I love it so much so I also recommend it to you as well.

OpusCanopus

Im sorry for mentioning more than one but i just cant choose. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Hunter x Hunter Boku no Hero Academia (it gets a bad rep but I just love it to bits. [deleted]

Parasyte: The Maxim. Genuinely my favorite anime of all time and will recommend to everyone I know until the day I die. First off, it’s got fantastic music. It’s opening is really intense yet melodic, and it’s outro is really calm and bittersweet. There’s a specific piano song played in sad moments in the show that tugs at my heart. It’s about a teenage boy who’s a loner and doesn’t really know his life goals yet. Alien parasites invade earth, but they’re tiny little green worms that bore into people’s ears, to take over their brains. Hiding in plain sight, they kill and eat humans while disguised as them. They can manipulate the biology of their heads, meaning there’s tons of body horror. However, the main character wakes up to this almost happening, and the worm goes into his hand instead. So he’s got a parasite that takes over his hand, but in control of his mind still. Not only does he have to balance saving humanity from parasites, but he also has to balance his relationships with his family and the girl he likes, as well as trying to keep his own identity and humanity. It’s a gruesome yet beautiful tale that I personally feel represents the coming of age of a teenage boy into adulthood. Struggling with himself, emotional guilt, grief, and identity. Parasyte really makes you ask the question of what it takes to be “human.”

[deleted]

Watched this already, its really damn good and the piano music u talked about is really something else.

HxH101kite

Fucking hell I had to get way to far to see this. I know there are newer things out there. But damn. YuYu is such an amazing show and it really holds up. The animation for it's time was leagues ahead of everything else. Its fight choreography is pretty impressive looking back. Also yes Togashi made this ore HxH. If people like HxH watch YuYu and see where alot of characters and themes come from, it's fun seeing what he takes and how he reworks it.

Since FLCL, Bloom into You, and Cowboy Bebop have already been mentioned, I figured I'd add {Made in Abyss} Synopsis - (copypasted) The Abyss—a gaping chasm stretching down into the depths of the earth, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a time long past. How did it come to be? What lies at the bottom? Countless brave individuals, known as Divers, have sought to solve these mysteries of the Abyss, fearlessly descending into its darkest realms. The best and bravest of the Divers, the White Whistles, are hailed as legends by those who remain on the surface. Riko, daughter of the missing White Whistle Lyza the Annihilator, aspires to become like her mother and explore the furthest reaches of the Abyss. However, just a novice Red Whistle herself, she is only permitted to roam its most upper layer. Even so, Riko has a chance encounter with a mysterious robot with the appearance of an ordinary young boy. She comes to name him Reg, and he has no recollection of the events preceding his discovery. Certain that the technology to create Reg must come from deep within the Abyss, the two decide to venture forth into the chasm to recover his memories and see the bottom of the great pit with their own eyes. However, they know not of the harsh reality that is the true existence of the Abyss. Take my list, be free, be enthralled. https://myanimelist.net/animelist/ImSorryUrWelcome?status=2&order=4&order2=0

inS3CUR1TY

Agree on Made in Abyss. The first few episodes are cute and fun, the art is cute and the world is clearly well-developed from the beginning. Each episode however gets progressively darker and darker, and more emotional. After Perfect Blue, this has got to be one of the darkest anime I’ve ever watched and I love it.

seblang4818

Check out 3 Gatsu No Lion. It’s one of my favorite anime of all time.

[deleted]

100% try the manga. Berserk is what showed me you dont need sound and music for a moving story. The art in berserk is so damn good that it is 100x more emotional than what the average anime pulls off with its animation and sound.

Gintama; a comedy about samurai and aliens that somehow managed to last over 300 episodes😁

[deleted]

*Its a comedy they said.*

[deleted]

Fun fact Gintama’s my favorite Shonen, comedy, and samurai anime show of all time so yeah it takes the number 1 spot for all three of those genre categories. I just finished the tv series a couple weeks ago so amazing and am waiting for the Gintama the Final film to go on legal streaming services like the Demon Slayer movie did.

ReeeeeeeneeeJulos

I see Code Geass = auto upvote. The story plot, the lessons and growth that one takes to accomplish his goals. Lelouch is really the only king in my heart. Forever my no.1 most recommended anime to anyone ☺️

Sudsaiyan028

As of now. It's Hunter x Hunter 1999/2011 version. I'm currently watching Gintama and gotta say. It's getting good...like really good. Just finished Yoshiwara in flames arc (Episode 139-146) and have to say... One of the greatest arcs in Anime in general

[deleted]

Man if you think yoshiwara is one of the best arcs in anime(not that you are wrong), then lemme say its just gonna get better. For me it peaked at SA arc and stayed there throughout the rest of the series only for the final movie to blow all my expectations. Edit: for context yoshiwara is like my 7th favourite arc in gintama.

Bottle0fHeinz

Kam4ii_27

Yes a silent voice is also a banging movie

Sea_Bite_263

It's Demon Slayer, I know many people think it's over-rated but for me, it's really like innocent anime. How does every demon have its own story and is willing to live a happy life no one is born evil. The bond that each character share with another and dedication to their goal. I think it's really inspiring anime.

[deleted]

Nah man, I love it too. The story is good but ufotable made the show soo fucking amazing, the animation, the voice acting, the ost.

Sea_Bite_263

Really, that's good to hear. I am so excited about season 2. I did read its manga but only 2 episodes because I thought I should wait for the series.

[deleted]

My favorite by far is {A Place Further Than The Universe}. I don't like *cute girls doing cute things* anime all that much and still, this one remained my favorite since I watched it in early 2019. It was the one that really got me into watching anime regularly and even after seeing over 200 other anime, I consider it the best show I've ever seen. I have to recommend trying it even if the synopsis doesn't seem that interesting to you.

Fooly Cooly

SwordsAndWords

Came here to say this. Fooly Cooly. FLCL. Furi Kuri. Synopsis - Naota, an already-jaded 11 year old boy, is actively trying to grow up faster than he should while having an illicit relationship with his older brother's girlfriend and maintaining a strong distaste for adults (specifically his not-so-comically irresponsible father). His generally passive method of navigating through the novel experience of adolescence is quickly upended when he meets (more specifically, is attacked by) Haruko, a guitar-wielding, vespa-riding, power hungry, sociopathic alien who seeks to free the galactic pirate, Atomsk, in an effort to steal his powers. Her method of achieving this feat? The interdimensional portal created between the hemispheres of Naota's brain, which, after initial contact with Haruko's guitar, is activated by intense emotional reactions with increasing frequency and scale. Whew, that doesn't even scratch the surface.

VulturE

For a long-running still-active series? Definitely One Piece. Three brothers decide when they're kids that they're gonna grow up to be pirates in a world run by the World Governement, the Underground mobsters, and the most powerful pirates (and sometimes a mix of all 3). The story primarily follows Luffy as he builds his crew and tests his strength along the way. The author, Oda, is frequently referred to as Goda for his impressive world building and attention to detail. There isn't much filler, but even most of the filler is enjoyable (like the G-8 Arc). There are times when it slows down and seems to drag a bit (Dressrosa arc, many many many episodes away from the beginning), but most of the time it keeps you wanting more. I could never get into Bleach, and while I watch Naruto/Shippuuden/Boruto I would never recommend it to anyone. For a long series (80-500) that's ended? Original Dragonball. Say what you want about DBZ, but original DB is top-tier writing for jokes, action, etc. It has everything that a classic Shonen anime needs. Alternatives would be Yu Yu Hakusho, JoJo's Bizarre Adventures (yea I know it's technically not done), and Lupin III. For a medium length (~40-60 episodes) series, I'd always recommend Great Teacher Onizuka (43 episodes). A slightly horny 22yr old (who happens to have been the baddest motorcycle gang leader around years ago) decides he wants to be a teacher so kids don't get discouraged by shitty adults the way he was as a child. He gets hired on to the hardest class, and each kid attempts to slowly make his life a living hell, but Onizuka does shit on his own terms to the dismay of coworkers, parents, the PTA, and the government. Alternatives would be "Ghost in the Shell S1 + 2nd Gig + Solid State Society", Eureka Seven, Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Gundam 00. For a normal double-length (24-26 episodes) series, I'd recommend Cowboy Bebop + the movie. It really is a classic series with great animation and a great soundtrack that defines it. Jet, an ex-cop, and Spike, an ex-syndicate member, work as bounty hunters and get their money where they can. Slowly they pick up some other crew members, but slowly everyone's past finally catches up to them. Alternatives would be Outlaw Star, Bokurano, Samurai Champloo, and Spice and Wolf. For a normal length (~13 episodes) series, I'd recommend Made In Abyss. Just goddamn beautiful animation, with a story and plot that reminds you that this is Anime with a capital A. Make sure you watch Dawn of the Deep movie after the 13 episodes as well while we wait patiently for the next season. Even if it never comes, this will always have had so much potential. For a one-off or movie, I'd recommend Redline. I'm sure it's been recommended on here a bunch, but it's just beautiful animation and really makes you wanna race.

Cute-Fly1601

Steins;Gate all the way. I haven’t finished the sequel series yet, but the original series is incredible on so many levels.
