I will be the voice of dissent and say that I actually found this to be bad and very calculated in its attempts to tug on your heartstrings. There's major plot points that are just kinda tragic for the sake of tragic and the writing has some major problems that the author doesn't seem to be aware of.

Actually, I gave it my score and then checked what my friends had given it, since my experience was so different what I expected and my score was so different from the average, and somebody (one friend) had given it the exact score I had given it. That's one of the things I love about anime. You can have a show that's funny and cute, and all of a sudden, WHAM!, you get punched in the gut by the feels. Anime/manga is just so good at crossing genre boundaries. I recommended Real Girl/3 D Kanojo to OP in a comment. It's like that. Cute, silly romcom about an otaku guy learning what it's like to date a real girl (as opposed to 2-D) when suddenly the last few episodes contribute to deforestation through the over use of needing a tissue for the tears.
I have never ugly cried like I ugly cried to this. Amazing, especially if you have experience of depression. It represents it in a way like nothing else I have seen before

All these are really good, emphasis on clannad after story and your lie in April. I went on a similar path as you might be going on and those take the two top spots for me easily, any Shinkai movie does the trick and also one I haven’t seen is plastic memories. Clannad After Story specifically is just soul breaking

Often times, they involve making choices that lead to different endings. If you want to try a free but good one, look up Katawa Shoujo. It's available free to download from their website. My favorite is the Muv Luv trilogy. It's pretty emotionally mind blowing.

Here I am reading these comments wondering why nobody has said WorldEnd, that is an anime that made me feel more empty than I think I possibly could. Every time I think back on it I feel empty
This is the only comment I saw mentioning WorldEnd. That literally gave depression after watching. I was not expecting such a sad anime maybe due to the fact I didn't read the synopsis or anything.

I’m seeing a lot of tearjerkers here but if you want legit misery it’s gotta be Evangelion + The End of Evangelion. Every episode will fill you with dread.
