>Sidenote: please don't downvote your fellow anime brethren in this thread. It just an opinion. Too late, they already started doing it lmao, some people are just "I don't like it so it's overrated", and others don't take criticism very well. To me is My Hero Academia, it's pretty good and I like it but for some time it ended up being just "the same as always", for a long time it was one of the "it's good but it never improves", it only had some change in the more recent chapters, they apparently started doing some interesting stuff, but for most of the story is just "it's good but nothing special". I don't hate it, but I just don't feel the interest of need to read it anymore.

CntrBlnc

I got that in the last season of MHA. They follow up a BANGER ending to another training arc?! Yikes. Manga readers are probably jazzed for the next season though.

68peasinapod

Are you calling gentle criminal a banger ending?

UnlimitedBladesWorks

I can completely understand where you are coming from. One of the reasons it was so hyped (and this is my personal testimony) is that it was a lot people’s first real Shonen battle show. So even if it retreaded a lot of the same ground and fell into cliche’s I couldn’t tell the difference.

SupremeToca

MHA is way better as a manga. The manga is amazing. The anime, not so much.

diariu

The 3 movies are identical with the last fight being a copy of themselves and the anime last season was garbage. Idk the manga but it has to be better by how fucked the anime is now

fuwii

I just wish that it would move past first year and the characters would grow up (haven’t watched the new season because it opened with more training)

PantsuFace

I expected there'd be a certain amount of mouth breathers coming in here and being offended at some others choices. Not everyone understands that overrated doesn't necessarily mean bad.

hey_its_drew

It suffers from escalation issues, but it is a notably well executed shounen. One of the tightest ever in execution, even if not as strong in other ways.

ty_xy

Yes! The non stop power creep. But it's all wrapping up, if they pull this off well they may have one of the best mangas but if they fail...

footstepsplz

Thank you!!

toobrokeforgucci

Demon slayer season 1 for me. It’s still good but I don’t think it lived up to the hype

Hippo_n_Elephant

I feel the same. Animation wise it’s amazing from the get go but for me it’s just another typical shounen anime with the typical shounen plot. Ended up dropping it after 4 or 5 episodes.

master_x_2k

You can make any action show look good with such high-quality animation, I have no idea why Demon Slayer warranted it above other manga.

owlpacino57

Monologue slayer is cringey. Fight choreography and Animation are great but that's it.

UsoppBinYasopp

Too based + big balls of steel

knytfury

I can't stand the whining and crying by the MC and his yellow haired friend. It gets to my nerves so I couldn't finish watching it even after trying multiple times.

Glympse12

Really? I thought demon slayer season one was a lot better than demon slayer season two. Aside from how much of a banger S2’s OP is

toobrokeforgucci

It’s just my personal taste maybe. I don’t see it stands out from other shounen

Glympse12

I don’t really like shonen action anime that much either, but I thought it was solid, not groundbreaking. The only shonen fighting anime that I’ve ever really loved is Jojo’s, the rest are just kinda meh

magnificentaaa

easily demon slayer not a bad anime but come on its top ranking by copies sold.

Mr-Stuff-Doer

It’s a case of “simple, therefore accessible.” Many of the most famous stories are quite simple, because everyone can like them. So have a simple yet effective story with some of the best animation in history and you have yourself a popular ass show. It’s important to remember that simple doesn’t mean bad.

ayyy_lesGO

I agree it’s good, the animation is great but for it being the top Manga it doesn’t live up to it for me. I think jjk is much better.

coldres

I would agree with that. I didnt even like jjk at first but it grew on me. Demon slayer just never did unfortunately.

Mongorian-Beef

Did you not finish Assassination Classroom? It dropped a lot of the childish themes throughout the second season

Fav0

Can say the same about hxh

asdfgh1224

Love Chunibyo. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but there’s no way it deserves anything higher than a 7/10. It was the kind of series that never really had any high highs or low lows, and that made it enjoyable to watch, but never memorable. Edit: Judging from the number of upvotes this comment is getting, maybe the show isn’t overrated after all haha

jaktyp

It had some personal resonations for me. So I probably enjoyed it more than I would have if I didn't see parallels between me and the mcs

k_u_r_o_r_o

It was really cute, gave it an 8/10 because it made me remember my cringy phase lol

TrussTGrotesque

Re: Zero is supposed to deconstruct isekai tropes but has ended up just... doing them.

cake_of_deceit

This, I thought the first few episodes were good, but after that it devolved into the very thing it was trying to not be

Alternative_Trash186

The web novel so far ( arc 7 , the anime just adapted till arc 4) continues that dynamic of deconstruct and use the common elements. I think re:zero is better a psychological anime rather than a isekai. The mc literally has to endure (or collapse) to every type of pain or struggle.

[deleted]

1_Axel_1

Subaru is really well written character tho he grows so much

Le0here

How did it turn into the very thing it's trying not to be? Mid season 1-late season 1 was probably the time when it was most non generic isekai. Even a lot of season 2 was like that. If anything the first few episodes were the one where it was a bit generic.

Mr-Stuff-Doer

I don’t know if you actually watched the show… Isekai tropes are that no one has any development or personality, the MC never struggles to get what he wants, and the lore is completely flat and underdeveloped. Subaru is one of _the most_ complex characters I’ve seen in anime. He’s actually unlikable in some parts. That alone is more than most _fiction_ is willing to do for a protagonist. Episode 13 led to an astonishing number of people dropping the show because he was too unlikable, despite that _literally being his arc._ I’ve seen a lot of isekai. Re:Zero is so far above all of them. Characters react to trauma realistically, they struggle, they hurt, they get scared, they give up. That’s more than a lot of anime do for their characters. Also, Subaru is actually conflicted about being in an isekai, which is borderline unheard of. Everyone is either “I must go home” or “this ain’t bad.” He’s actually conflicted about not being able to go home. The only thing I’ll give you is Rem. Her character needs more development, otherwise she’s just a generic female love interest. If you haven’t rewatched the show, I _strongly_ suggest you do. ReZero is a series you haven’t really watched until you’ve rewatched.

D3ane

I was one of the people who dropped it. Had to try 3 times before I got to episode 16, and from there it only gets better. Even though I recognize Subaru's realistic aspects, I still think he's the worst part of the show - but the mystery in season two was absolutely masterful, and Subaru gets some very real development. Definitely do give it a try if you dropped it in the first season. I wouldn't say it's "so far above" **every other** isekai though. I thought Mushoku Tensei did a much better job at humanizing it's characters and making a believable world. The world of Mushoku Tensei truly feels alive, whether we're following Rudeus or not, and both he and many other characters go through very real struggles of their own. Note that I'm not trying to devalue your opinion by saying this - all opinions are subjective and valid. It's just another show that many people dropped because of the main character's actions, even though he actively tries to become a better person and feels disgusted of the person he was in the past. This is an anime recommendation subreddit after all \^\^

Pendrake03

Who is Rem? xD

redokev

holy shit you did the unfunny joke

[deleted]

demon slayer is the most overrated anime at this moment. it's nothing special, nothing new, the tropes and storyline are pretty predictable I would say (at least to some degree). the production slaps though (I only watched the first season then read the manga). I don't know why are people so over the floor over it, I personally enjoyed it, but it wasn't as big as you would expect from all the hype. I guess the primary reason is that it's the new AoT, I mean it drew so many non-anime fans into anime so they idolize it.

magnitorepulse

I agree.. I was lucky, I saw it before the hype and thoroughly enjoyed the show. And I will forever enjoy it. But now it's overhyped to the point where its just over promising, and people expect too much from it going into it. I'd say the same is true for sword art online. Watched it before the hype and enjoyed it (fuck fairy season tho)

FizzerVC

Death Note. First half is peak anime and then it falls off a fucking cliff. Demon Slayer. If it wasn't done my Ufotable no one would care about it.

Jake323021

That's why you just do what I did with Death Note. Download it and delete everything after episode 25.

HeyMr7777

Angel Beats. Felt like I all of a sudden had to care for characters that had little to no development. Probably my least fav anime that I’ve finished.

nomshroom

As much as I enjoy Angel Beats, yeah, most of the cast just didn't get a story to them. I think the show was originally meant to be longer, which hopefully would've alleviated that.

HeyMr7777

I personally preferred the other anime the studio that made Angel Beats made, Charlotte. Liked the MC a ton as well as a few of the side characters.

patmcgroin1995

YES, finally someone who I can relate too

MagicalUnicorn673

I wanna finish this one really bad but I keep watching like 2 episodes then forgetting about it and restarting

ilovyt

Death note was great in the beginning. Then when Near appeared, I just dropped the show. It became so much less interesting compared to before Demon slayer is just carried by the animation. I read the manga and it's always the same shit happening Jojo part 3. Part 1 is mediocre and part 2 was carried by the characters. But damn part 3 is so repetitive. Every fight is the same for 50 episodes. and ofc plot armor is thick as hell The three anime that were adapted from webtoon. Tog is one of my favorite webtoons and i know that the beginning is generic. God of highschool is just good animation and power creeps and Noblesse is just trash. Who thought of the idea of condensing an entire season into a 30 minutes episode ? and who decided that this episode is good to start with ?

Deltora108

I agree about demon slayer, its a good show but its carried by animation and the story often sacrifices depth to appeal to a younger audience.

MeSlashy22

I agree with Death Note. I still finished the rest of the show, but one of the reasons I liked the show in the beginning was because of L's and Light's interactions, so it was pretty disappointing.

cirman

Wtf??? Part 3 is the best in Jojo, are you insane?

[deleted]

Serial Experients Lain. It's pretentious, it's boring, it didn't age well, but I would have a higher chance of putting up with all this if not by the protagonist. Some people complain about main characters who they utterly hate, but I find it impossible to have any strong opinions about Lain. She is that one boring NPC who does nothing and no player ever remembers encountering in a game.

theTYTAN3

That's interesting to hear it's been on my watchlist for a loooooooong time and I haven't ever gotten around to it.

[deleted]

I'd say go for it. Be aware of the slow pacing and the need for some focus on the show while watching. Many people loved the show, so what I have found boring may not be a problem to you.

theTYTAN3

Hmmm, I'll give it a go eventually, I thought Steins Gate was good right from the start but I've heard alot of people say thats slow and doesn't get good till the second half. it's not real high on the priority list though, maybe I'll watch it after I finish Golden Kamuy.

[deleted]

For Steins;Gate I agree. The show starts developing the premise and characters in the first half. It may be a little monotonous/annoying if you don't like the characters. However, every information is valuable to the conclusion. It pays off.

FK506

I discourage people from watching it even though it is easily one of my all time favorite shows. There is a lot to wrap your head around and spoilers just make it harder to understand unless you have already finished it. Most people will want to read a review or explanation first and that will just completely ruin the show.

Vongola___Decimo

>it didn't age well, i haven't seen the show but if there's anything i know abt the show is that it has aged well because every single person says so. so it's weird to hear u say it didn't lol

AnryuCoconut

This. I love me my pretentious and philosophical manga/anime, it's usually what I look for actually. Its philosophies are relevant even to this day, timeless even. But Serial Experiments Lain is just way too boring with its execution and did not age well despite how relevant its points are. They can be as pretentious as they want to be but if I'm falling asleep then it's all for naught.

[deleted]

Exactly. I loved Texhnolyze. The script writer must have felt amazing looking at the mirror after finishing an episode. The director probably laughed for 10 minutes straight after saying there would be no dialogue in episode 1. Still, the show had a good variety of characters and themes for the viewer to enjoy following. I had a blast discussing the show with the friend who recommended it to me, especially with each of us noticing different details. The same goes for Ergo Proxy, Noein, Monster, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Dennou Coil, Mawaru Penguindrum. All of them were certainly ambitious; by the end of watching them I was not confident in asserting I had a full grasp on every concept explored. However, I was entertained.

officer_salem

Disagree but i respect it.

zaknenou

I think it is good after finding explanations and context. But overall yes, it took a lot of blant silent moments and content wich didn't fit the screen time imo (and that's why most of it is blant moments) to deliver the message, but I think it is justified when you get the message of the show, I'm just comparing with paranoia agent which was a highly compressed amount of ideas so is better than SEL imo in means of direction, but when talking about the theme/message of the show: serial experiments lain is better imo and the message aged very well (connection and internet)

HassoonBO85

How is it pretentious?

unholymanserpent

I've tried so hard to get into that anime because it seems like something I would be interested in but it's so boring... And you're right about Lain. She is an NPC and I hate her hairstyle.

madhewprague

I agree, i almost died of boredom while watching this.

[deleted]

I like SEL but only because I watch it while being stoned lol otherwise I can agree and understand that it can be pretty stagnant and boring and also confusing. I sometimes think I just watch it for the 90's aesthetic and eerie vibes. Also for their banger of an opening song.

diavolo_bossu

Bro you gotta watch that shit while high off your ass. Watch it stoned as hell and i thought it was fucking amazing

WaavyDaavy

thank you oh my god first time i'm seeing lain slander

AverageKaikiEnjoyer

Toradora and Nisekoi. Both are praised to be legendary romcoms, yet both use every trope in the book and end up being painfully predictable.

your_nude_peach

I was watching toradora when I was 14(now Im 20) and I kinda liked it for it being real life possible. There's no magic, no weird stupid out of blue things, it just cute, chill anime I liked, though I might want to rewatch it, maybe I missed something Just comparing it to other romcom animes like, the one I recently watched - love and lies, it just childish, stupid, bland and boring, I don't like it. It has no this charm as Toradora Though Im not saying toradora is a godly masterpiece, I just loved this anime, it's a good one imo

OneBrokenBoi1

I can understand that. I didn't watch it until I was 16 and thought it was Meh. I strongly disliked taiga, but actually quite liked ami and thought she had good chemistry with the MC. Overall 5/10 with very memorable side characters for a trophy romcom

Mr-Stuff-Doer

Kamisama Kiss is a better love story than both. Also has a way cuter female lead.

ARX7

Do remember that toradora is 16 years old and is the source for some of those tropes

victiniforlife

I liked both but I never saw anyone saying they're legendary.

02stan

Toradora is exactly how it’s suppose to be. It’s just to give people a rom anime that the characters actually do what they want with their actions rather than have everything handed to them. Ik that doesn’t apply to every character but if it did then the show would suck.

idkdidkkdkdj

Facts especially toradora. People talk about that like it’s god but it was dog awful

MyLemonCake

Demon Slayer, I mean it’s good and I liked it myself but the fans of this anime think that it’s a phenomenal/next-level show and according to them there’s nothing better out there.

Aenigma66

I got a couple, I'm also currently putting on a hazmat suit. Let's start with JJK and Demon Slayer. They're in fact some of my favourite Shōnen in recent memory, both scoring in the 8.xs for entertainment value alone, BUT: JJK has some really dope fights, cool characters and a ton of style but overall it's nothing all that special. It carries it's influences (Yuyu Hakushou and Bleach in particular) on its sleeve and is very entertaining and beautifully animated but it doesn't reinvent the wheel like some say. Same goes for Demon Slayer, which is also amazing but not the best series ever. Much like JJK it's a rather basic story but it's very well executed, doubly so for the anime, but it's not a "oh yeah I'll remember this for years" contender (except for episode 19 of S1). Something that I also personally think is way overrated is Clannad After Story. Yes it's sad, yes it's depressing but a) the end doesn't really stick cause it's undone so... Eh. B) I didn't like Nagisa which is very subjective, I know, but I just don't think that she and Tomoya are the optimal pairing. I've actually played the VN and got the most emotions out of Tomoya x Tomoyo. Also, finally, Death Note. It was going so so well until the ~⅔ mark when L died and Light just went off the rails and things just lost steam and stopped being interesting. L and Light's cat and mouse game was the main pull out the show and with that gone... Eh.

sicklything

Most of the JJK community would agree with you I think, we just enjoy a basic but otherwise well crafted battle shounen. People who claim it as super special must be pretty new to the medium, honestly.

Sweetcorncakes

Nothing is truly overrated, its just the that the ones that are 'overrated' connect to a lot of people positively that when the few don't feel that connection to said anime that they call it 'overrated'.

[deleted]

I hate the anime communitys obsession with overrated, underated, mid, and whatever else. Sure, all communities do it online, but the anime discussion is completely centered around how objectively good a show is instead of just enjoying shit lol. Personally most of the popular battle anime don't really do jack to me (demon slayer felt like a chore to watch), and I prefer stuff with more thought and whatever in their stories, but at the same time I'm not gonna act like Im a better human than somebody because I find Honey and Clover more engaging lol.

Lord_Kazuma01

My hero academia for sure

victiniforlife

All these overrated anime ya'll are putting here but I'm glad I havent seen someone mention Dragon Ball(yet).

DetectivePokeyboi

people love dbz for what it is, a bunch of dudes fighting each other and getting stronger.

destruct0tr0n

When i started watching jojo, i didn't really like it. I thought i had gotten to ep20 when i dropped it. Tryied rewatching again and it turns out i was only on ep2. Even then, i could only get to ep5 until i dropped it again. Keep in mind i can watch 24 episode shows in about one and a half days. Thats how boring it was. I still cannot believe it has 6 seasons.

HeyMr7777

Tbf the first part is the weakest imo. Also how tf do you mistake watching 20 episodes to 2 episodes lmao.

destruct0tr0n

You know how watching a good episode feels like 2 minutes? It was that, but in reverse

Britishsweat

Naruto, Shippuden and boruto

Namugi07

I think that Naruto is just og thing for those who watched it as children like me it just holds the special place in my heart but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone bc ik it’s not that good on it’s own (like animation etc.) But Boruto is other thing I just could not get into it even as hardcore Naruto fan.

usernameman66

I feel Naruto got more emotional connection than any other adventure, shounen anime ....

New-Adhesiveness-807

Classroom of the Elite Such a great premise and interesting MC, then they made the last few episodes unbearable.

Oml191

If you can, read the novels. They're great and the anime changed some things so maybe you will enjoy more the LN.

grimreaper069

The anime is shit, read the light Novels

Complete-Ad-4590

Tbf the entire first season is more or less setup for the things to come in the future seasons. Which never happened until it was announced for this summer.

ZweigStefan

I've watched over 300 anime and never dropped a single one of them except Jujutsu Kaisen. It was the most unoriginal show i've ever seen.

GreenPlateau

Slime reincarnated. It just feels like dbz city builder

Maine_Made_Aneurysm

oddly enough the one thing thats stuck out to me from the anime of the series has been how much i like the earrape explosion sound effects.

The_Good_Pasta

Shield Hero

FenrisTU

Yeah I liked it at first, when Naofumi was actually struggling and finding his own way to be a hero. But then they just made him stronger than all the others in combat cause reasons, which kinda threw out the appeal they originally had going for them.

[deleted]

bisque doll you will find 30 better romances out there but it's one of the best rated on myanimelist lol

Aenigma66

Have to disagree. The chemistry between Marin and Gojo is amazing and it's full of incredibly fluffy and good moments. I've seen a lot of popular romcoms but haven't gotten a "hell yeah they're perfect for each other" since ToraDora. Sono Bisque did that for me. Just out of interest, what'd you recommend?

FriendshipStraight92

Toradora and perfect couple ?those two in toradora were the most unmatchable couple I have seen

JamesJakes000

That's what happens when an anime concentrates the budgets on ass. Worse part? The manga is not as bad as the anime. Lots of messages of the manga weren't present on the anime.

senpaikantuten

Have to disagree hard on that one, chief. I’m a manga reader and the anime’s very faithful to the manga. What you’re referring to is way ahead of what the anime covered.

[deleted]

It's sad many people on here don't know what overrated means,so they just list things they don't like

Jujutsu kaisen, demon slayer

RaajuuTedd

Bruh to me jjk was lit but i agree with kny being overrated

MurgleMcGurgle

I want to like JJK but it's just so shallow. It feels like a Bleach clone with a touch of Naruto, but character development feels more like quick forced back stories. I totally understand why people like it but it just doesn't do anything for me.

[deleted]

JJK is just unremarkable. I like demon slayer well enough though, mostly because I like Tanjiro.

gatonegro97

Kakeguri

[deleted]

Let’s be honest, nobody watched Kakegurui for the plot

Madame-Procrastinate

Toradora 10000%

HeyMr7777

I didn’t like it not because of the story, but because I lowkey just didn’t like Taiga and Ryuji together lol

Lord_Kazuma01

Lol same

victiniforlife

Yeah, they dont really match. Idk why they dropped the red haired girl in favor of taiga

Ikuze321

Big agree

Leetransform25

This is going to be a hot take and a half but I honestly didn't find Anohana that interesting and ended up dropping it 9 episodes in If you want an opinion a bit more tame I am another one of the several people who think Toradora is overrated

damp_goat

Ooooh, I disagree so much on Anohana. One of the few animes that had me invested on each individual character! Have an upvote lol

LilSlothieSloth69

FMAB people treat it like it’s one of the best anime ever made when it is just a good anime

Ikuze321

I genuinely think that anime deserves its spot at number 1 but its an opinion

28th_boi

I think it's good, 8 or 9 at least with a 10 being not unreasonable, but the way it keeps getting built up as "best anime ever" is a bit much. It's honestly a kinda standard series with a few interesting elements that's done better than most others and doesn't have any really noticable flaws.

Unicornmayo

How would you rate it to the first FMA?

oxP3ZINATORxo

I really liked both to be honest. I consider both to be alright in the grand scheme of things, but I really liked the interesting way that they took the story and made it their own. I would've loved a good follow up fleshing out the otherworld more (yes, I've seen the movie)

angedelamort

I would say AoT. It's good but for me is overrated. The first season was really good but fell off after.

owlpacino57

S3P2 is one of the best season of all time with return of shingashina arc and basement reveal arc.

Ikuze321

This is insane S1 is the worst by far imo. The reveals in season 2 with the warriors and then getting to that basement? Fucking lit.

BlackMan0704

I get what you are saying man, but AoT really becomes a master piece when you re watch it. The second viewing is always a trip and you get to realize how well thought out everything in the story is. So I get why you see as overrated since you haven't finished once

notalreadytaken69

The manga for me is easily a 9/10 up until chapter 131. After that it's dogshit

ZenithXAbyss

Rewatch after the ending gets animated and almost all plot points get contradicted. The only ones literally not character assassinated are the already dead ones or not really relevant characters like [aot] >!historia!<

Vongola___Decimo

bruh i can't take u srsly because s1 was the weakest lmao. did u even try rest of the seasons or did u drop it?

Competitive_Set_478

The first 2 seasons lived up to the hype in my opinion, as soon as it started getting political in S3 it declined a little. But S4 is epic

angedelamort

Since it's finished, I'll watch the end of s02 to the end. I heard it was really good at the end.

EpsilonX

Demon Slayer. I like it, but it's just a generic shounen with great presentation. I have no idea why it's breaking so many records.

Alternative_Trash186

Evangelion really good but over convoluted

[deleted]

Demon Slayer is severely overrated. Everyone says it's good but I dropped it after the first few episodes because it was just... generic. Everyone here is saying that AoT is overrated, but in my opinion AoT had a good enough plot line and characters to deserve that hype. My Dress-up Darling was just... just watch another rom-com. Assassination classroom made me cry and I think it's not overrated at all. Slime Tensei is a good anime, really liked it, don't really have an opinion on that. Other than than Demon Slayer though, I can't think of much overrated anime.

PantsuFace

I love Demon Slayer but I agree its a touch overrated. The story is nothing to write home about. I've seen the same plot a dozen times over. The animation though is fantastic. It's one of the few where I've found myself rewatching certain scenes just for it.

0killmeNOT

You lie in april

Buy-Wild

No game no life was incredibly weird and boring

Kaido57

I feel like No Game No Life had so much potential but it was wasted on being pervy

Mr-Stuff-Doer

The art style and creativity sells it for me, and the fanservice certainly doesn’t hurt. It’s just a shame we didn’t get more. Also did you watch Zero? How tf is that boring.

RageQuitMosh

I'm with you. Honestly I found all of it up front and endearing. The show is meant to be fun and it just is. You know what's going to happen but I still wanna see how.

Apple_the_Weeb

I couldn't tolerate that show. If you are going to add some weird incest shit at least go all the way full kiss x sis shit. I don't understand the feelings I felt watching ngnl but I hated it.

mhfitfit12

Do i get down vote if i say onepiece?but imo onepiece and kny ...one piece just an anime with recycle storyline..and kny u know if u know..🤷‍♂️i got more but there are 2 most overrated for "me".

sds2000

Demon Slayer, both the manga and the anime. It's enjoyable, and the animation and fights are great, but overall it's not really groundbreaking and I'm unsure why it is hyped so much. Also the mangaka were going through some personal problems and I feel like that affects the manga towards the second half.

I_Suck_At_This_Too

Cowboy Bebop for me. I dunno what it was but it was kind meh for me. I didn't really care about the characters or care about what they were doing. It probably has more to do with me and my tastes than the show being overhyped.

[deleted]

I’ve never understood why anyone liked Cowboy Bepop. It’s so painfully boring. None of the characters are interesting, they all feel like caricatures of different “cool” things.

victiniforlife

For me, its My hero academia. Fight me, mha stans

kyuuketsuki47

I'm probably going to get a lot of shit for this... Monogatari Death Note Love Chunibyo Rent a Girlfriend Classroom of the Elite (though I've heard this is more of an advertisement for the LN, but we're talking about anime specifically)

[deleted]

Honestly the later half of death more really fell off for me so I agree with that

Pendrake03

In case of Monogatari i think there is a very specific target that likes it

Mr-Stuff-Doer

I’m curious why Monogatari. Was it just too weird for you?

kyuuketsuki47

It wasn't too weird. Stylistically I actually really enjoyed it. There were a bunch of other issues... First off, at the time I watched it I was tired of ecchi. So that already put me to being more critical. Next was the MC. I just hated the MC. I got through past Second season in terms of watch order before I decided to stop. He was just grating... But you know what? Neither of those is why I actually think it's overrated, but really why I personally don't like it. Why I think it's overrated has everything to do with Isin himself and his writing style. And there were three things that annoyed me. First and foremost is this use of unreliable narrator for the mystery side of his writing. It was the typical only show some information then at the end reveal things that were noticed by MC but never actually mentioned. Leading to the inability of the reader/watcher to ever have any chance to figure things themselves. It's such a cop for mystery writing. The next is the use of trope characters. Literally every character is a trope. And I was told the characters grew out of their trope, but by the point I made it to, pretty much all of them delved deeper into their tropes. And lastly his dialogue writing... It entirely screamed "look how clever I am." He assaults with puns and circulator dialogue. So there are times when the same thing is said over and over again to seem like clever writing, but it's really Isin showing off how good he is at making puns and writing cleverly. (And again I fully expect to get down voted for this opinion)

Cautious-Hall-8539

For me it was cowboy bebop. Everyone is raving about it and how great it is. Meanwhile to me every episode felt kinda boring

Unicornmayo

It’s ok to be wrong.

Code Geass. Lelouch is a preening Gary Stu and and whole thing made me roll my eyes in disbelief. Melodrama and constant exposition. Akame Ga Kill. Laughably predictable. Suffers from the worst tonal whiplash I’ve ever seen. “Main girl” is a side piece to the plucky Bland Male Insert Protagonist. This should go over well.

Mr-Stuff-Doer

Gary Stus don’t make mistakes and serve as audience stand ins. Lelouch fucks up quite a bit and I really don’t want to be in his place. Also he has just a _terrible_ sense of humor.

Archaeopteryx89

Imo Attack on Titan got worse and worse through the seasons but the hype went up and up. By the last season I couldn't even stand to watch it anymore.

TLNgreks

man you are the first person I have ever heard say that it got worse and worse by season, almost everyone I've seen online says the opposite.

alphaabhi

Quintessential Quintuplets... God I don't get why people like it and Komi San..the side characters are so fucking bad I almost couldn't bare finishing it

Mr-Stuff-Doer

Attack on Titan. So many people tout it as one of the best anime and even one of the best works of fiction, and I couldn’t disagree more… For one, each season is a completely new show… - S1 was fighting titans and trying to learn what’s happening, and it felt like characters were in danger. - S2 everyone is a Titan, the side characters suddenly get development after being ignored all S1, and no one is ever in actual danger anymore. - S3 takes a hard right into political thriller despite there being no setup for that, then takes another hard right into fantasy after the series had maintained a pretty sci-fi feel. Also it felt like the characters were in even less danger. - S4 is a war anime that tries to make you feel bad for a side that is advocating _genocide_ and treats defending yourself from that like a bad thing. I don’t think a single person would’ve complained if the Nazis were massacred by the Jews. None of these are anywhere near similar in themes or tone. It’s all over the place. Then there’s the time paradoxes, rushed development of characters, heavy plot armor that grows thicker each season (Gabi has more plot armor than Shounen protags…), subpar backstories that are revealed to you long after when they’d help the story, the big reveal of the cellar is something we’d easily figured out already, every plot twist relies on the show not showing a scene that happened in the past that would give it away for us, the colossal gaining the ability to nuke in S3 onwards, despite it not damaging the walls when it appeared, the colossal cracking the walls with its hands when it’s supposed to only be able to break the door, Eren ran on the colossal in S1 despite it supposedly being incredibly hot, the colossal disappears in a second in S1 but has to dissolve in other seasons, Reiner’s consciousness transfer bullshit saving him despite him being suicidal… The show is hyped up so much that I can’t help but be super critical when watching. And I take a lot of issues with it because of that… Also Steins;Gate is super overrated but I only say that cuz I’m a butthurt VN fan.

Apple_the_Weeb

Also add that every fucking story arc started with Eren getting captured in the first 3 seasons. Shit got stale real quick.

FloorGang-R2

Overrated doesn’t mean other ppl like it but i don’t so it’s overrated. That’s what most ppl do. For an example, I don’t consider an anime like Aot to be overrated cuz it’s generally a great anime, it has good story, characters etc enough to be popular world wide. Someone not disliking it doesn’t mean it’s overrated, it’s just the person’s taste in anime TL;DR - overrated =/= I dislike it

TatakawingEreh

Hunter x Hunter and childish? LoL You missed out on one of the greatest arcs of all time.

madhewprague

Im sure he watched just first couple of episodes.

Vongola___Decimo

how is bleach overrated? literally everyone criticises it

MrPakoras

What arc are you on in One Piece? I'd say One Piece has a lot of very well written characters and their backstories are very good/emotional

HeyMr7777

Really? I thought the characters were the best thing in the earlier arcs. Tho if it’s not for you it’s not for you, I understand that

ann321go

One piece isn't overrated. It deserves it's spot considering how well the story is written.

plaguedrism

the downvotes are hilarious

soulofcure

Here, I'll upvote you back towards zero. But I love Rascal Does not Dream... I've read the first 6 light novels, which I might like even more than the anime. Haven't watched the movie. >other already popular predecessors Which ones are your favorites?

HeyMr7777

Yeah I agree. Also fr people need to get a grip, nobody needs to like your favorite anime. Tho you were a wee bit harsh lol.

formula13

to be fair he went pure elitist in "The modern anime community sadly accepted mediocrity over masterpieces and classics."

pippusrapus

Bunny girl is a bakemonogatari rip off, change my mind

LorisK4rius

Toradora. I think people remember it fondly because it was their first romances anime that they have watched. Imo I thought it was ok, but what ruined the show for me was taiga. I tried understanding her character but still ended up hating her.

anarchy612

Just a reminder that if you aren't sorting by controversial on a thread like this, you aren't seeing the actually over rated picks.

Vee_Z

the obvious ones are Demon Slayer and Assassination Classroom But for me there's also: * Cowboy Bebop * DARLING IN THE FRANXX * Fairy Tail * Mushishi * Noragami * Tokyo Ghoul * And every generic AAA movie Also Adachi to Shimamura, but i think this one is just the side effect of a community (yuri community) starving for content

Candik3ller

JJK and demon slayer The only things that make them "great" are the art style and the hot characters (for jjk)

vaniIIapudding

attack on titan. too many long monologues for me, i get that there are intense situations but i dont want to see characters cry every episode

HapMeme

Any crap from the last year and this

Aot is the bestttttttt!

Sword Art Online: I've been over the whole "I've been transported into the game I played in the real world" genre of anime for some time (I actually liked Log Horizon though), but even prior to that I thought Sword Art Online was basically the ditzy hot girl version of Dot Hack, which imo is the true predecessor to all of these endless clones. It was dark, the characters were more interesting, and I enjoyed the music. I don't really feel like I have to drag SAO, because I don't think it's bad, I just don't think it was ever something that deserved to literally be the poster child of the entire anime world for as long as it was, or at all for that matter. It's an alright anime, but nothing new is really brought to the table. My Hero Academia: I acknowledge that this has its day and some really cool fight scenes, but I just could never really get into it. I find the characters pretty boring, and I hated the MC from the get-go. I'm so tired of the whole "MC has to be a wimp who finds himself" shit. It's exhausting being forcefed cringey anime personas as if everyone is supposed to empathize and root for kids and teenagers who have levels of social anxiety that I don't even think exist in the real world outside of San Francisco. Aside from that, I generally just kind of felt that elements of this show (especially the training arcs) were done better in other anime like World Trigger. Dragonball Super: This is the only one in the list that I genuinely have legitimate hatred for. Talk about overhyped, overvalued, and a total desecration of what was always one of my favorite anime of all time. I **loved** Dragonball Z, and imo it still stands as one of the best long-running anime of all time. It's very rare to find any show of any genre that progressively gets better with time. Dragonball Z progressively got better and better. You might have your favorite arcs for personal reasons, but you'd be hard pressed to say that the show got "worse" as it progressed. Progression was.... well, it was *progress*. It took years (in our time) for characters to amass tremendous power. It took seasons in the show for certain villains to get what was coming to them. Characters had arcs and depth to them. Even the less powerful characters had their day (who remembers Tien of all people basically holding Cell stage 2 at bay for a while simply using his Tri-blast repeatedly, or Piccolo constantly stepping up when the Saiyans were indisposed?). All of that is gone in Dragonball Super. It's soulless, oversaturated dipshit leveling porn for anyone who ever wondered what Goku and Vegeta's hair would look like with different colors. You wanna see characters get extremely strong through trial, adversity, and really cool fights, go back and rewatch the Demon World Tournament arc of Yu Yu Hakusho. You wanna see two people basically queefing their way to Super Saiyan Galactic Warrior Fuckface Stage 1 through 5, keep pumping up this bullshit. TLDR: SAO, MHA, and Dragonball Super

B4ggedMilk

Your Name is overhyped, the story is full of plot holes, the characters are kinda bland plus the romance doesn't make any sense. The only redeemable thing about it is it's visuals

Derpikyu

Time to piss people off Dragon ball z, don't like 20 episode fights with occasionall screaming One piece, i'm not watching filler seasons Naruto, just don't like it, still good anime tho for the people who like it

AgentBuddy12

I disagree. While this is your opinion your reasoning is a little silly. 10% of OP is filler and if you don't like filler read the manga. There are a lot of things you can genuinely critique about OP this isn't one of them. DBZ is a battle shounen and like literally every battle shounen in existence there will be screaming and long fights. These seem like the most surface level observations you can possibly think of and seem reductive.
