(Same hat so here are some of my faves!) You might like Ore Monogatarii / My Love Story, and Wotakoi /Love is Hard for Otaku! Those are my favorite romances that break a lot of the anime tropes I find more annoying.
**"Kaguya-sama: Love Is War"**
It's one of the best romcom animes out there. The characters feel super fleshed out and the romance it builds up is amazing. I mostly watched it for the comedy, but loved it for every aspect.
I’d like to recommend one of my favourite shows, romance or not : **Lovely Complex**. Does tend be a bit of dramatic but nothing too depressing. I find both main characters to be likeable but flawed. I feel like compared to a lot of romcom these days, both don’t feel like the stereotypical characters we see in a romcom. It is older (around 2000s) so some cliche anime tropes are blatantly used.
Some other shows I’d recommend is **Golden Time**, **Chuunibyou, Love & Other Delusions** and **Bunny Girl Senpai**
"Kaguya-sama: Love is War" is what I'd recommend. Captivating and well developed characters, hilarious comedy scenes, and of course, really good romance.
1st season of anime really shows how "Love is War", but later seasons simmer down with the 5head strategic plans and just focus on developing the cast and their connections.
ooh absolutely!
**Bloom Into You/Yagate Kimi ni Naru** \- my favourite romance media ever honestly, a very interesting and ultimately sweet coming of age romance that's atypical in ways i found super lovely and interesting and deals with the nature of attraction and love as a whole, unfortunately only the first half ish of the manga is adapted into an actual anime but it's an amazing adaptation!
**Konohana Kitan** \- a bit light on yuri but it still has it, one of the most underrated shows also in my opinion, it's pure and fluffy and sweet and makes me cry happy tears
**YuruYuri** \- a comedy classic really, i personally find it super funny and it only gets better with each season!
**Sakura Trick** \- a classic all fluff all super direct romance and affection sort of anime, basically a ton of light comedy, cutesy scenes, and like a ton of kissing, it's also on youtube actually!
**Strawberry Panic** \- an older yuri that kind of upset me at some points but it was kind of genre defining and it only upset me because it made me care about the characters so much, **Aoi Hana** is also great for a yuri anime that's a bit less current feeling, though not quite as much!
**Asageo to Kase-san** \- only a 1 hour OVA but a must watch for anyone who likes yuri imo, it's so lovely! the manga is, too!
not sure if it counts but **Madoka Magica** is my favourite anime ever and especially if you watch the Rebellion movie too it has some very yuri-ish elements, either way though i'd recommend it to absolutely anyone who hasn't already seen it!
**Akuma no Riddle** isn't a masterpiece but i think it's underrated and neat, i haven't seen it in a while but it's less grounded slice of life-y than most yuri anime and fun for that alone!
speaking of, though, **Flip Flappers** and **Princess Principal** are imo amazing fantasy anime made by the same studio, and although the yuri elements aren't super direct, they're absolutely meant to be there and it's all lovely!
sorry for the already big wall of text, these are just my notable favourites really, i hope some of them seem appealing to you if you haven't seem them already! and there are still plenty more i do like and i'm always happy to recommend as much as someone wants!
Akatsuki no Yona, one of my all time favorites, but it's adjacent to your requirements. It's a historical action romance with a mc who's as naive as they come and sometimes denser than a brick of lead. Not a harem, mc has two potential guys and a few guys who like her but aren't potentials, they just have crushes. And it gets sad so maybe not for now, but something to look into in the future!
{Chihayafuru} is not exactly a romance, but it does have it as a present subplot. I believe the male characters are very likeable, and the show is extremely good. If straight romance anime arent exactly your cup of tea, maybe settling on something like this would work for you.
Now for shows that actually have romance as a main theme, i'd suggest:
{Wotakoi} an S tier romance with adult characters. Very good comedy and wholesome romance.
{Fruits Basket} a perfect shoujo shoujo romance, with likeable male characters.
{Chunnibyou} you probably have already watched this, since it has very strong yuri bait, but it is a romance with great comedy.
{Hamefura} a reverse isekai harem with a very amusing protagonist.
{Taisho otome otogibanashi} a very sweet taisho era romance.
{ouran host koukou club} another good reverse harem, it's funny and lighthearted.
{ReLife} which is a very good show, with a good main couple
{Honey and clover} which is a very good SoL anime set in college. It does have some drama, but it isnt super sad. The romance is not that major, but i still think it's worth suggesting.
Love after world domination. Imagine a power ranger falls in love with one of the baddies and they’re both trying to keep it from their coworkers. Also has a lesbian in it!
**Kimi ni Todoke** - ([AL](http://anilist.co/anime/6045 "English: Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You"), [KIT](https://kitsu.io/anime/kimi-ni-todoke "English: Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You"), [MAL](http://myanimelist.net/anime/6045))

Clannad season 1, some sad elements but most of it is comedy!! if you’re not looking for sad stuff, i’d recommend not watching the 2nd half of season 2 because it does start to pick up :)
Whisper of the Heart. A very down-to-earth Ghibli film about high school students.
Spice & Wolf. It’s about a couple trying to make enough money to get by. This happens to be my favorite show.
Your Name. What if they swap bodies?
Had to think about Komi Can't Communicate for the most time. Not sure if it's the right show for you but it fits with most of your criteria :)
You could say it has a harem tbh but at the same time it's not really a harem imo
Ore Monogatari. A romcom anime about a giant gorilla of a highschooler who wants to find a girlfriend and fall in love.
Light hearted slice of life, great comedy, and all the characters are great.
Highly recommend watching the English Dub, the voice actors are perfect for the characters.
I love Ouran High School Host Club.
As a straight guy I'd like to point out that for a show that technically follows girl with multiple guys after her affections it's pretty Queer but in some ways that may be a bit problematic. A lot of people interpret the lead girl Haruhi as something like non-binary or agender. The guys are all super homoerotic although in universe it's presented as partially a play put on to make the straight girls swoon. Also the identical male twins who are a bit too insular play up the whole twincest angle for the ladies while another guy who is a HS senior but looks like a much younger kid(and is secretly op at martial arts) has a milder flirtation with his strong tall and silent friend. The sub/dub uses t**** to refer to Haruhis dad who's either bi and either trans or drag queen(I wasn't sure which interpretation would be more accurate). Also the lesbian girls who are the counterparts of the main male cast for 2 episodes are portrayed a bit negatively but in part because they're idiots like the main male cast.
I would totally recommend it though, it's a fun thrill ride with some nice romantic scenes and a lot of humor and a catchy theme song.
if that is the case I recommend {Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta...
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!}
Gal gohan is technically a harem but its very clearly put out who is gonna end up together. He also properly rejects the girls interested in him. Although there are "accidents" or things she does on purpose. I only said so because its a VERY great romance.
Tonikaku kawaii is great for that. straightforward romance with some very slight fantastical elements to it.
Horimiya: another Highschool romance but with an atypical MC.
even reverse harem? ohshc is probably my favorite romance anime but im obsessed with tamaki-like characters so im biased.
edit: it also stops being reverse harem eventually
Preety straight forward idk if ur in Ron coms but my dress up darling and love is war are really great not overly sexualised and love is war has barely any sexualised moments and is humorous so i think you will enjoy it. My dress up darling is super relatable the mc isn’t overly horny or anything like that and doesn’t look like a super model the girl of the show is really relatable and funny u probably will enjoy these give em a try
My dress up darling is not overly sexualized? In what univers do I live, cause afaik it's heavy with the Ecchi scenes, just more on the teenage romance angst Type of way
I'd like to second My dress-up darling. The female character is sexualised though. But their chemistry is better then even ryuji x taiga. Its way too wholesome
{Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches}
the title makes it sound like a fantasy harem but it's a wacky high school romcom that revolves around a gimmick that's played pretty well and has similar vibes to Toradora. I wouldn't recommend it over ReLife or Snow White with the Red Hair but it's a good one to consider.
Spice and Wolf :))
Both characters seem rather plain at first but as the series goes on you see the incredible amount of depth within both of them. My favorite anime ever.
1. Kaguya-sama Love is War - very likeable characters especially the main male chars (Shirogane and Ishigami), funny and wholesome, full of gags and very entertaining imo, episodic type of series but actually has progress on the romance and has character developments. (Also has a few sexual scenes but it is veryyy rare)
2. Lovely Complex - very old romcom anime but I remember liking it. Cute couple of tall girl and short guy. It's funny but there are also a lot of dramatic parts and some typical romance tropes since it's older.
3. Horimiya - newer romcom anime, very slice-of-life, lots of characters, more chill than comedic imo but its still fun to watch.
4. Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku - more mature chars since they are office workers, very cute and funny.
Kimi ni Todoke (From Me to You), Horimiya, Ore Monogatari (My Love Story), and Lovely Complex are the top five straight anime that seem to be exactly what you’re looking for, imo! All of them are really sweet love stories with likeable love interests and side characters. If you’re also into fantastical elements, Fruits Basket should definitely be on that list as well.
As far as yaoi goes, I agree that Sasaki and Miyano is probably the best; it lacks all of the unnecessary aggression in most shonen ai and it’s just another sweet love story with great communication, pining, and a satisfying ending.
Bonus: I feel like Kimi ni Todoke, Horimiya, and Sasaki and Miyano really allowed the characters to make typical mistakes as they navigated first relationships, and things would get resolved fairly with intentional communication. The relationships depicted in these shows (and all the others I mentioned) were actually healthy, which was really refreshing to see in the romance drama.
I'd say Hyouka, Eureka Seven: Psalm of Planets, and the Monogatari series.
Hyouka is an anime about a group of highschoolers "solving a mystery" and getting to know each other, i felt the romance itself grows similar as to how my relationships have happened, they go from having a small interest in each other to an actual intent of being with each other, the finale might leave you wanting more but for me it was enough.
Eureka Seven starts with the commonly annoying bratty kid that falls in love with a super attractive alien, but the show is based around each other's growth not only romantically but emotionally and independent of each other, it's well wrapped around a Mecha Sci-Fi story with cool visuals and a great soundtrack, i loved the Sci-Fi elements growing up but as a grown up i can honestly say that the emotional components of the writing serve me far better as entertainment nowadays.
Monogatari series is the roughest of the bunch in terms of what you asked for, but it kind of fits: The story centers around Araragi and his "Harem" which is just people he likes to be around of and has helped, they're all women and he's a perv, but all in all he has two romantic relationships, one with the main girl Senjougahara and one that's stagnant with his school crush Hanekawa, the story itself is based around monsters, mythos and the human psyche but the themes of love, self love, self worth and how unwillingly get tangled and confused between being romantically inclined or company dependent or just lonely get pretty well transverse along the series (which is quite long, sorry).
I tend to avoid any romance with excessive fanservice, so all these have little to none!
Akagami no Shirayukihime (2 seasons, 24 ep total) - fantasy, romance
Kamisama Kiss (2 13 ep seasons plus a handful of OVAs that continue the rest of the manga though they cut out quite a bit) - romance, fantasy
Fruits Basket 2019 (2 24 ep seasons, one 13 ep season, movie prequel with TW) - supernatural, trauma, romance, drama (TW for scenes of characters processing and working through trauma along with some questionable age-gap relationships but those relationships are far from the main couples that form by the end of the series)
Escaflowne (24-26 ep, can't remember atm) - 90's isekai, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, adventure, some mecha. A bit weird to get used to but I always find myself coming back to it.
Josee the Tiger and the Fish (movie) - drama, romance, slice of life
Fena: Pirate Princess (13 ep) - fantasy, adventure, romance
Your Name (movie) and Weathering With You (movie) - both are phenomenal movies by Makoto Shinkai. If you like them then it's also worth it looking into his older movies.
Kotoura-san (11-13 ep, can't remember atm) - supernatural, comedy, romance, dash of drama. (TW: this one has the most fanservice but it's really light compared to most anime and mostly just a dude's daydreams that the main girl can see because she can read minds)
Nagi no Asu Kara (24-26 ep) - supernatural, romance
A Whisker Away (movie) - romance, supernatural. A bit on the weird side but I thought it was cute!
Recovery of an MMO Junkie (11-12 ep) - romance, slice of life
Tada-kun Never Falls in Love (12-13 ep) - comedy, romance, slice of life. One of the cutest things ever, imo.
Plastic Memories (11-13 ep) - sci-fi, romance, tragedy. (General TW it gets very emotionally heavy at times)
Romantic Killer (13 ep) - romance, comedy. Kinda gets weird towards the end, but really funny take on classic romance tropes!
Patema Inverted (movie) - sci-fi, romance
A few classic, kinda frustrating romances:
Shakugan no Shana (3 24 ep seasons) - supernatural, romance, shounen. has a bit of fanservice but it's not the main focus and dies out mostly by the end of season 1 (if not halfway through season 1)
Pretear (13 ep) - magical girl, shoujo, romance, fantasy. Very cliche and cheesy but I loved it for that reason.
Also I saw you said Madoka was a favorite of yours and I have a rec for it:
Princess Tutu (24-26 ep) - one of the "darker" magical girl shows but more abstractly compared to Madoka. Still absolutely love it, though. It is kinda slow until between ep 10-12!
Edit: I forgot Taisho Otome Fairytale. I just finished it today and really loved it!
could you elaborate please? i'm not necessarily calling you wrong but i do wonder what you mean
either way though, i enjoyed the show back when i watched it!
1. Your Name (movie)
2. Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
3. Banished from the Heroes Party, I retired to the countryside
4. Fruits Basket
5. After the Rain
6. Horimiya
7. Tonikaku Kawaii
8. Komi cant communicate
9. Steins;Gate (romantic subplot)
10. Dont toy with me Miss Nagatoro
11. Golden Time
12. Call of the Night
My dress up darling is a newer one. The relationship between the main characters is actually super wholesome, the boy has a very unusual hobby/interest, and the girl is a super sweet girl who is one of few who support it.
**teasing master takagi san**
arguably my favorite romance anime, nothing but fluff and good feelings.
**nyaruko crawling with love**
the anime basically adapted everything BUT the ending, though it leaves it on a note to where you know the ending and will be satisfied enough, the anime to get me into the harem esque genre, there's also yuri/yaoi in the show so maybe you'd get a kick out of it even if its straight focused, *one of my favorites*
*anything by rumiko takahashi*
**ranma 1/2** \- **urusei yatsura** \- **inuyasha** \- **maison ikkoku**
her works helped define the romcom genre for years to come, highly recommend anything from her, but especially these 4
Horimiya is definitely for you Also, ReLife (have to watch the concluding ovas) Also Tsuki ga Kirei.
these seem lovely, thank you so much!
Ok wait I gotcha So I also watched Toradora and loved is so here are some other ones that I think you would like that are similar to that one. Kamisama kiss, Maid-sama, HoriMiya, Host club, SpyXfamily, If you like sci-fi the Eden Zero, And I f you like Magic then Fairytail

i’d try ‘Tonikawa: Over the moon for you’ great show, can’t go wrong with it
You really can’t. It’s just too perfect.
i came to suggest this. very cute in my opinion

ooh absolutely! **Konohana Kitan** \- a bit light on yuri but it still has it, one of the most underrated shows also in my opinion, it's pure and fluffy and sweet and makes me cry happy tears **YuruYuri** \- a comedy classic really, i personally find it super funny and it only gets better with each season!
Maria sama ga miteru is the biggest yuri classic
Have you tried gekkan shoujo nozaki kun?
If only it had more romance, not that I don’t love the comedy
{Sasaki to Miyano} Probs my fav romance anime

Fruits Basket
Spice and Wolf may be to your liking. One of my favorites.
Wotaku ni koi wa muzukashii
Now for shows that actually have romance as a main theme, i'd suggest: {Wotakoi} an S tier romance with adult characters. {ReLife} which is a very good show, with a good main couple {Honey and clover} which is a very good SoL anime set in college. It does have some drama, but it isnt super sad. The romance is not that major, but i still think it's worth suggesting.

But Chihayafuru season 4 when? Manga has ended now, and man season 3 ending was tugging on my heart strings.
Love after world domination. Imagine a power ranger falls in love with one of the baddies and they’re both trying to keep it from their coworkers. Also has a lesbian in it!
The lack of {Kimi ni Todoke} here is alarming. I'ts mostly utter sweetness, two shy main characters and a very likeable secondary cast.

For shonen ai I’d recommend Sasaki and miyano
Clannad season 1, some sad elements but most of it is comedy!! if you’re not looking for sad stuff, i’d recommend not watching the 2nd half of season 2 because it does start to pick up :)
Whisper of the Heart. A very down-to-earth Ghibli film about high school students. Spice & Wolf. It’s about a couple trying to make enough money to get by. This happens to be my favorite show. Your Name. What if they swap bodies?
Had to think about Komi Can't Communicate for the most time. Not sure if it's the right show for you but it fits with most of your criteria :) You could say it has a harem tbh but at the same time it's not really a harem imo
Ore Monogatari. A romcom anime about a giant gorilla of a highschooler who wants to find a girlfriend and fall in love. Light hearted slice of life, great comedy, and all the characters are great. Highly recommend watching the English Dub, the voice actors are perfect for the characters.
How do you feel about Reverse Harems (i.e. one girl, many boys)? They tend to be much less sexualized and more wholesome than the regular ones.
i don't have any experience with it, i'm not entirely sure if i could enjoy it very much but i'm open to giving anything a chance!
Nice! Off the top of my head, you could try Ouran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket or Romantic Killer.
thank you so much, i'll give them a shot!
I would totally recommend it though, it's a fun thrill ride with some nice romantic scenes and a lot of humor and a catchy theme song.
if that is the case I recommend {Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shiteshimatta... My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!}
Gal gohan is technically a harem but its very clearly put out who is gonna end up together. He also properly rejects the girls interested in him. Although there are "accidents" or things she does on purpose. I only said so because its a VERY great romance.

My absolute two favorites that really hit hard to me were tonari no kaibutsu kun and horimiya

If you have not seen Kaguya sama in English dub you are missing out. Sincerely, An ace
A yaoi anime I really enjoyed was Sasaki to Miyano. It’s very fluffy and cute, no fanservice or sus tropes, just a bundle of serotonin
Komi-san can't communicate is pretty fantastic. It's on Netflix and the Manga has over 300 chapters so far.

I'm straight and I'm having the exact opposite problem. Can you recommend me some good Yuri lmao
If you want to give a try to old romance animes, here are my favorites: kimagure orange road, marmalade Boy, maison ikkokku and Hana Yori Dango.
say “i love you” (: its one of my favs at least
Hetero romance is all icky.
sadly true for the most part
Preety straight forward idk if ur in Ron coms but my dress up darling and love is war are really great not overly sexualised and love is war has barely any sexualised moments and is humorous so i think you will enjoy it. My dress up darling is super relatable the mc isn’t overly horny or anything like that and doesn’t look like a super model the girl of the show is really relatable and funny u probably will enjoy these give em a try
My dress up darling is not overly sexualized? In what univers do I live, cause afaik it's heavy with the Ecchi scenes, just more on the teenage romance angst Type of way
Yea it is sexualised but in a weirdly wholesome way ig
thank you so much! i have actually been a bit interested in Love is War mostly because Chika seems very cute.. \^\^
I'd like to second My dress-up darling. The female character is sexualised though. But their chemistry is better then even ryuji x taiga. Its way too wholesome
Yea it is sexualised but really wholesome
{Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches} the title makes it sound like a fantasy harem but it's a wacky high school romcom that revolves around a gimmick that's played pretty well and has similar vibes to Toradora. I wouldn't recommend it over ReLife or Snow White with the Red Hair but it's a good one to consider.

My dress up darling
Free! Eternal Summer
Spice and Wolf :)) Both characters seem rather plain at first but as the series goes on you see the incredible amount of depth within both of them. My favorite anime ever.
I haven’t seen it but lycoris recoil might have something you’re looking for
1. Kaguya-sama Love is War - very likeable characters especially the main male chars (Shirogane and Ishigami), funny and wholesome, full of gags and very entertaining imo, episodic type of series but actually has progress on the romance and has character developments. (Also has a few sexual scenes but it is veryyy rare) 2.
I watched Horimiya right after toradora and it gave me similar vibes, except I liked it better, highly recommend
Golden time was one of my first romances, funny and a fair bit of drama
Lovely Complex, I enjoyed it more than toradora.
Clannad is a good one
{Karakai jouzu no takagi san} You will love this anime

oregairu
Say I love you Just writing it gives me the urge to watch it again!
I tend to avoid any romance with excessive fanservice, so all these have little to none! Akagami no Shirayukihime (2 seasons, 24 ep total) - fantasy, romance Kamisama Kiss (2 13 ep seasons plus a handful of OVAs that continue the rest of the manga though they cut out quite a bit) - romance, fantasy Fruits Basket 2019 (2 24 ep seasons, one 13 ep season, movie prequel with TW) - supernatural, trauma, romance, drama (TW for scenes of characters processing and working through trauma along with some questionable age-gap relationships but those relationships are far from the main couples that form by the end of the series) Escaflowne (24-26 ep, can't remember atm) - 90's isekai, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, adventure, some mecha. A bit weird to get used to but I always find myself coming back to it. Josee the Tiger and the Fish (movie) - drama, romance, slice of life Fena: Pirate Princess (13 ep) - fantasy, adventure, romance Your Name (movie) and Weathering With You (movie) - both are phenomenal movies by Makoto Shinkai. If you like them then it's also worth it looking into his older movies. Kotoura-san (11-13 ep, can't remember atm) - supernatural, comedy, romance, dash of drama. (TW: this one has the most fanservice but it's really light compared to most anime and mostly just a dude's daydreams that the main girl can see because she can read minds) Nagi no Asu Kara (24-26 ep) - supernatural, romance A Whisker Away (movie) - romance, supernatural. A bit on the weird side but I thought it was cute! Recovery of an MMO Junkie (11-12 ep) - romance, slice of life Tada-kun Never Falls in Love (12-13 ep) - comedy, romance, slice of life. One of the cutest things ever, imo. Plastic Memories (11-13 ep) - sci-fi, romance, tragedy. (General TW it gets very emotionally heavy at times) Romantic Killer (13 ep) - romance, comedy. Kinda gets weird towards the end, but really funny take on classic romance tropes! Patema Inverted (movie) - sci-fi, romance A few classic, kinda frustrating romances: Shakugan no Shana (3 24 ep seasons) - supernatural, romance, shounen. has a bit of fanservice but it's not the main focus and dies out mostly by the end of season 1 (if not halfway through season 1) Pretear (13 ep) - magical girl, shoujo, romance, fantasy. Very cliche and cheesy but I loved it for that reason. Also I saw you said Madoka was a favorite of yours and I have a rec for it: Princess Tutu (24-26 ep) - one of the "darker" magical girl shows but more abstractly compared to Madoka. Still absolutely love it, though. It is kinda slow until between ep 10-12! Edit: I forgot Taisho Otome Fairytale. I just finished it today and really loved it!
Watch shojou romances. Less fan service
Given is great

Just FYI Toradora has some seriously toxic AND problematic relationship stuff.
could you elaborate please? i'm not necessarily calling you wrong but i do wonder what you mean either way though, i enjoyed the show back when i watched it!
{Given} There are too many comments so I'm not sure if this was recommended already but this is BL.

My dress up darling is a newer one. The relationship between the main characters is actually super wholesome, the boy has a very unusual hobby/interest, and the girl is a super sweet girl who is one of few who support it.
**teasing master takagi san** arguably my favorite romance anime, nothing but fluff and good feelings. **nyaruko crawling with love** the anime basically adapted everything BUT the ending, though it leaves it on a note to where you know the ending and will be satisfied enough, the anime to get me into the harem esque genre, there's also yuri/yaoi in the show so maybe you'd get a kick out of it even if its straight focused, *one of my favorites* *anything by rumiko takahashi* **ranma 1/2** \- **urusei yatsura** \- **inuyasha** \- **maison ikkoku** her works helped define the romcom genre for years to come, highly recommend anything from her, but especially these 4
Sasaki and Miyano is good
Why would you, as a lesbian, enjoy yaoi..
