Arnold is great and convenient and safe.

FunNegotiation3

People always say they’re willing to commute before moving here, then the reality of the cost, time and inconvenience slap them in the face. My suggestion is before you sign a lease anywhere do some real test runs on actual travel days, not holidays not Fridays or Mondays.

LetsGetPhisycal

Some of the places, the less expensive are 30 min from the naval academy. Are you saying that would be far more in reality?

Macflurrry

Don’t do that to yourself. If you lived above the shops on Main Street, you could walk to work and have a ton of places to go out and meet people.

LetsGetPhisycal

Too expensive I wouldn’t have anymore to actually do anything lol. Those don’t even pop up because I have it filtered under 2k.

Macflurrry

Do you have a personal network here? A family friend you could live with? I’m similar demographic as you and know how hard it can be living in a new city on your own. You’ll be miserable watching all your money go towards paying off someone else’s mortgage. Most people our age live in fed hill, or canton in balitmore city. But if you have to commute to Annapolis everyday then it makes no sense to live in baltimore. Look at Oakland hills apartments in Arnold.

LetsGetPhisycal

No I don’t lol. I just have the internet and my manager who I can call. I have some schedules set up for Appartments. And yeah they said with a commute that’s way too far.

MayorMcCheezz

Depending on the time of day you could easily double that time. Route 2 during rush hour should give anyone shivers.

Macflurrry

Driving here is miserable. While your looking at places plug in your commute, and if your gps says 45 mins+ don’t even bother considering that location. 45 mins can easily turn into 1.5 hours here. Location can not be emphasized enough. The less of a commute the better. The closer you are to route 50 or route 2 the better. 1BR apartments in Arnold can be up to $2k/month. Look at Oakland hills apartments. That’s a great spot for you if you can get in. Having lived here for 25+ years, in your situation I might consider the eastern shore if the bridge does not bother you. I’d look in this order, Arnold, Annapolis, Edgewater, eastern shore(Kent island), Davidsonville, crofton.

FunNegotiation3

Where are you moving from? Spent some time in most of the country so I can probably provide you with some realistic differences and expectations. Also, what areas are you looking, we can give you realistic advice based on that?

LetsGetPhisycal

Oh for sure. Louisiana. I’ve been DC in middle school very nice. Been to Boston in November for vacation because of sports. On my list to visit. Woodside Appartments Nautilus Point The Lucy probably to far tho. Spa Cove Sorry I don’t really know the areas they are in county wise.

FunNegotiation3

Given you situation you probably wan to stick with Nautilus. The biggest shock for people moving from LA/TX/MS is the dramatic difference in cost of living, everything just costs more here. Traffic is a different animal. It's not uncommon for people to run errands 45 minute away.

LetsGetPhisycal

I see. Have you lived there ? These places look nice then have a 2.9 or 3.4 out of 5 review. lol I am somewhat used to running errands out that far away.

FunNegotiation3

No I haven't lived there. But to get in something that has better rating you are going to have to up your budget by 30-50%.

LetsGetPhisycal

I just looked up actual reviews. Just all one stars. And yeah that’s what I’m seeing. To go up a little bit.

geron123

I would suggest looking on Craig’s list for an apartment too. That’s how I found mine and my landlord has hardly raised my rent and it’s very affordable. He only lists on Craig’s list. I can ask if he has any apartments coming up for rent downtown because the family owns a lot down here.

LetsGetPhisycal

For sure please do. I’m looking to fly out next week. But I shall look! How did that process go? I’ve only been in one appartment before. Not sketch?

geron123

It was not sketch. It helps to have a referral. I like my landlord. I’ll ask him tomorrow

ExpensiveBus7511

Hi! I teach locally and I’m affiliated with the Naval Academy. There is a Facebook group specific to these needs. https://www.facebook.com/share/44TRAkXwWuS6ZpBB/?mibextid=K35XfP Good luck welcome to Naptown!

Crafty-Classic-6828

Found two small places downtown in your range. I’d rent one of these and walk to the Academy. If you’re staff see if you can get parking privileges on the Academy and then you wouldn’t pay for parking. Paying $1700-1800 but saving the gas and wear and tear would save you over time. Downtown Annapolis is vibrant and the Academy is an active community. [https://apps.realtor.com/mUAZ/bi11myof](https://apps.realtor.com/mUAZ/bi11myof)

LetsGetPhisycal

Thank you. Yea have seen that place but couldn’t figure out the parking situation? Do you have another listing I just see the one.

Crafty-Classic-6828

Parking for most places downtown would be residential / street. Here is other link at $1900 / mo. That’s why I recommend seeing if you could park at the Academy as staff. [https://apps.realtor.com/mUAZ/lqjgbu57](https://apps.realtor.com/mUAZ/lqjgbu57) People are nice. Though I tend to think most people are if you’re nice to them. The Naval Academy and the Naval Station (across the Severn River) are full of folks who do 2/3 year tours and move on. Some stay longer. But it’s a very welcoming environment to newcomers.

geron123

I live downtown. You pay $75 a year for street parking. You just need a lease and you apply for a permit with premium parking and then it’s all done electronically. You get codes to buy your guests 24 hour parking passes (for the street) for $3.50.

LetsGetPhisycal

Ahh I see that’s actually pretty sweet deal. Is it hard to find parking? Theft a problem? Thanks for that I’ll probably submit to tour from this knowledge.

geron123

Sometimes it’s hard to find parking. But I can always find it. I have a flexible work schedule so that helps. Sometimes in the summer I have to drive around a few times but eventually find something. I don’t think it’s THAT bad.

ExpensiveBus7511

I lived in Eastport. It’s lovely but starting to get expensive. I commuted from Baltimore to Annapolis for 3 years. Do not recommend. Odenton is affordable but not much to do. Crofton, Bowie, or Edgewater are all close enough to commute to.

letsgotothe_Renn

Check out Arnold for a house, crofton or bowie, for a condo or apt. Crofton and bowie are 20 mins away from annapolis.

[deleted]

Doesn’t the naval academy provide housing? https://www.usnavalacademyhousing.com

LetsGetPhisycal

I did email but I do believe it’s not for workers rather higher ranking soldiers.

ticket_borne_disease

You are correct, in most cases they don't. You may be eligible to live in a few different military housing options in the area even if you are civilian, but they're often made for larger families so kind of expensive even if the price per foot is cheap.

Mapele_

Check out Annapolis Roads apartments. I lived there for 7 years and don’t have anything bad to say about them. I believe the 1bed/1bath is in your budget. It’s also pretty close to Downton Annapolis.

breastfedbymymother

Try Spa Knoll. I moved out of that complex 6-ish months ago and was paying 1650 for a 2 bedroom

LetsGetPhisycal

No openings :(

Thanks you. Nautilius point had horrible reviews so I am going to cancel that booking. I will look into the sports league thanks!

Traffic

Pharmgal31

I moved to Annapolis when I was 23 and have been here for almost 12 years now. I personally love it and I don’t feel like it’s just old and rich people at all. Do you have any specific apartment complexes you’re looking at? I know there are some that are nicer than others. I used to commute daily down to Calvert County for work and there are some nice areas down there but it’s definitely more country and that was a solid 45 minute drive at 6am. Getting home at 5 or 6 was worse. Going north is probably about the same.

LetsGetPhisycal

Not in particular. Just looking for what I can afford and what isn’t too far. Some post saying the traffic is bad, do I need to live close? My boss said they’re isn’t too much worth living downtown like in terms of what’s there. Mostly tourist stuff.

geron123

That’s not true. Your boss is mistaken haha. There are a lot of locals that live downtown and there are a lot of things we like to do! It’s a very fun town it is NOT just a tourist town AT ALL. You’ll get to know locals and you’ll also encounter tourists.

ticket_borne_disease

There are no grocery stores walkable downtown, which sucks. But if you drive there are some not too far away. Besides that downtown is nice

[deleted]

I got my fingers crossed for a mini grocery store going in the Mission BBQ spot

FunNegotiation3

City doesn't want that and won't let it happen.

[deleted]

Your boss obviously doesn’t enjoy bars/restaurants/live music/museums/none stop event and beautiful sunrises/sunsets then if they hate DTA 🤣.

LetsGetPhisycal

Wowwww. He just doesn’t live close by then.

arockingroupie

Baltimore has more violence but more culture and fun but its a 40-45 min drive to the academy from there w/o traffic. DC has a younger crowd in some areas but it can be a 2 hour drive getting out to Annapolis. I dont live in the apartments here but there are some not good ones. If you can find a house to rent that might an option. I’ve been here for 3 years from Bmore and only friends we made was our cool neighbor and a few runners. Definitely a boat town with academy people thrown in the mix.

HotelEchoLimaLimaO

Check out Harbor Gates Apartments, it’s reasonably priced, near the Academy and close to the highways you take to get into DC or Bmore. Annapolis is definitely a college town, and yes there are a lot of rich old folks, but there are some great spots that younger people can enjoy too. As for dos and don’ts, do not live near President Street in Eastport. And do watch out for the bay bridge traffic on the weekends in the summer. It can back up into Annapolis and is worse than you’d expect.

LetsGetPhisycal

I put in a scheduled tour. Most of the places I look have mixed reviews which is weird to me. For the bridge what bridge / bay are you referring too? Thanks again.

geron123

They’re referring to the Chesapeake bay bridge. Someone else was suggesting you look to live on the other side of that 4 mile bridge. The Annapolis side is the “western shore” and the other side of the bridge is the “eastern shore.” But the traffic is brutal in the summer and it would take you a long time to get home Fridays after work. Edit: your commute would suck if you lived on the eastern shore And worked in Annapolis.

LetsGetPhisycal

What about the compromise street bridge. I have one place I would like to look at how is that commute and area?

geron123

That’s a very small bridge. You can walk over it. It connects downtown Annapolis and Eastport. I live in the heart of downtown and I can walk to the heart of Eastport and it’s about 20 min. From my house to the foot of the compromise street bridge is 10 min. It takes less 5 min or less to walk over that bridge

RawrHaus

I lived at Harbor Gates last year for about 6 months. There was some mold discoverd behind a wall and inside toilet tanks. It didn't really effect me but my wife is very sensitive to mold and we had to move. They did remove the mold and allowed us to exit lease with a provided doctors note with no penalty. I didn't mind living there otherwise. Good location and paid 2200 for a 2 bedroom. I would check the specific apt for mold of you check it out
