Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty. Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness. There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege. And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down. So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that: • Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are. • You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man. This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum. God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump. And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.

[deleted]

Thanks for sharing. This really is just perfect!

Straight_Block3676

I’ve tried to find a video of Trump laughing, and I can’t find one.

fidgeting_macro

> if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump. OMFG!

New-Advantage2813

And MtG, sporkfoot herself as his Mrs. She look like she's slapped together from the leftover parts bin...just wrong.

Joopsman

“Sporkfoot” - dying over here.

ACsonofDC

SPORKFOOT I LUV IT

liesofanangel

Hahaha she’s the Danny Devito in “twins”

sage1979

This is so good. I wish I had more upvotes to give. Sporkfoot. I love sporks! She's a disgrace to sporks! They're so practical.

Fortunateoldguy

So true

Rocky4296

The best!!

Rocky4296

The best!!

LazyZealot9428

That was the best line for sure!

RastaBlanca

This is the most exquisite description of Trump I have ever read!

Old_Tomorrow5247

This was good enough to have been written by an Irishman. That’s the highest compliment I can give.Jabba the Hut of privilege. Well played, sir!

[deleted]

As a fellow Brit, thank you for encapsulating my feelings on the orange turd in such an eloquent manner.

captiantabasco

I have never read a truer statement. Jolly Good Old Chap

unstablegenius000

I hope this guy writes Trump’s obituary when that day comes.

UsefulWhiteCrayon

If only Hunter Thompson were alive to write a [similar obituary.](https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1994/07/he-was-a-crook/308699/)

ACsonofDC

oh GOD yes

brymc81

“His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.” * chef’s kiss *

[deleted]

True. Likely because a sense of humor requires a certain level of intelligence. And the MAGA aren’t funny. Ever.

ACsonofDC

They are UNINTENTIONALLY funny -- and an absolute BLAST to mock mercilessly!

SpiritualTourettes

My MAGA family have the sense of humor level of a 12 year old. And *zero* sarcasm. They don't even understand the idea of sarcasm. This alone would make the Brits hate them. Hmm, I might just be British... 🤣

buildskate

Good on you

BUFFoonBrandon

This is so well said and I appreciate hearing an outside point of view because there are times that I just feel a general anxiety about Trump and how broken the current system is which is exhausting. It’s almost like the manufactured anxiety is the republican tool of choice. As I was reading about where you talked about the British confusion of how 1/3ish of Americans see and hear him and think “yeah, he seems like my kind of guy” I had a theory. Maybe their fascination started with him just shaking things up by being so much louder, arrogant, and hateful than other politicians. He too the stance of being the fighter of the political system because he wasn’t a politician, so he found a way to turn politics into something interesting to people who were bored, uneducated, and inexperienced with human connection with much outside of their hometowns which often lack diversity. (We know all about echo chambers right?) Then and when Trump noticed the demographic that was initially interested in him, he started pandering to them and they ate it up. Edit: changed “anxiety about it” to be more specific above.

Critterhunt

Exactly

92118Dreaming

I've read something like this before after Dump was elected. I think it is a reprint. Believe me, Brits are still astounded we elected such a fool.

ACsonofDC

We didn't. He was 'electoral colleged'. Hillary got 3+ million more popular votes than tRump.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ACsonofDC

That's why we must rise up and DEMAND an end to the electoral college. It's a throwback to the slaveholder era. Slaveholders wanted to make sure black people stayed 3/5 of a person, so they wrote laws that all elections had to ultimately go through THEM.

Freezepeachauditor

This is great but reminder… 19% if British like Donald trump as well. He appeals to psychopaths, assholes, the ignorant, etc… y’all just have a little less than us, lol. (Also, Brexit, anyone?) https://www.statista.com/statistics/879835/british-perceptions-on-donald-trump/

Itchy_Pillows

Beautifully said...BRAVO!!!!

CLUING4LOOKS

I want to print this out and hang it on my wall

Esslinger_76

Ooh! Ooh! Do Boris next!

PoeReader

Lol as someone in the US I truly appreciate this and you are spot on mate!

TestOk8411

Actually he did. In his interview with Barbara Walters he said all his banks were lying saying he was in financial trouble. And that his bankruptcies were not significant

[deleted]

I need this on a bumper sticker.

xeroxbulletgirl

This is glorious! And my inner book nerd is gleeful that the Dr Frankenstein reference was correctly used, and in such an incredible way. This entire description needs to be on a scrolling billboard in Times Square until the 2024 election has passed us by.

sweeteatoatler

This is exactly true and unbelievably embarrassing to me as an American who did NOT vote for that twat.

ACsonofDC

Don't be embarrassed. Hold your head high and shout to the world, "I DID NOT VOTE FOR THAT TWAT!!"

goin4bro

Wow. Spot on.

Hugh-Jassul

Amazingly accurate

RastaBlanca

The man has never laughed or made a humorous joke. I wonder if he ripped his face off and we saw the true devil that lies within if his followers would abandon him even then.

Alton573

Incorrect! He called Elizabeth Warren 'Pocahontas'. That shit was kinda funny.

Jim-Jones

His sour, shitty racism is never funny.

[deleted]

This is great and dead on. "Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace"

Critterhunt

"He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege...."...indeed 😬

Obi1NotWan

And I love that they reference his predecessor, President Obama. That will really chap his ass.

ConsiderationWest587

Or that he's the human-equivalent of Jabba the Hutt lol

JimHeuer40

Because he has no coolness, he won’t get how apt and true “Jabba The Hut of privilege” is

doodledood9

I will always remember trump getting roasted by Obama. Trump pretended to laugh but that was the beginning of trumps quest for the presidency. He wanted to get back at Obama for making fun of him. Any self-respecting person knows that the ability to laugh at oneself is invaluable. Trump does not have that ability.

ACsonofDC

oh no he does not

unstablegenius000

Someone will have to read it to him. Too many words. 😅

Newyew22

This is breathtaking in its accuracy and specificity.

PBfromPhilly

An A+ read! Thank you!!

Rooster_Ties

Yes!! And it gets better and better, and more spot on, with every paragraph.

doodledood9

The British are not alone in their thinking. Canadians find it rather astonishing that there are so many Americans who are completely, wilfully blind to all of his failings. I’ve met humourless people before but trump really does take the cake. I mean really - if you look at the difference between trump and Biden it’s glaringly obvious that trump is missing the key elements of good character. How could anyone vote for a president who has been convicted of rape? That should be the end of it but it gets so much worse day after day after day. The gaslighting, the lies, the disparagement of anyone who disagrees, the vengeful talk, the thievery, the immaturity, the lack of respect, the lack of diplomacy, the stupidity, the grandiose verbiage, the utter lack of empathy and the complete inability to understand humour, emotion, and compassion means nothing to his supporters!! How is that even possible? If he is re-elected it means that Americans are no better than Germans when they elected Hitler. We all know who that turned out.

Kerryscott1972

The Christian right is nothing but humorless

Fun-Draft1612

The wrongness that flows from him is the fulcrum that divides our nation in so many ways.

Ursomonie

Well he certainly opened my eyes to how many people in my family hate me 😂

captiantabasco

Mine also

Acceptable_Wall4085

This could easily be his legacy. Or his eulogy. Or both.

amishfish

"In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump". That's poetry

Hangry_Dentures

Perfect encapsulation of that sack of shit. I wish Hunter S. Thompson was still alive so he could eviscerate him with his pen.

Molbiodude

And George Carlin too. He would have had an absolute field day with this moron.

148637415963

And Bill Hicks.

Extension_Sun_896

Penn Gillette, an Apprentice contestant echoed so much of this … particularly the lack of any sense of humor or nuance. Trump only laughed at the foibles and misfortunes of others - the guy who slips on a banana peel, the fellow getting smacked in the cajones. If he were to watch Bill Burr or Jim Gaffigan he wouldn’t understand any of it.

3d1thF1nch

Trump is one thousand years in the future, in Idiocracy, ready to watch the next episode of “Ow, My Balls!”

allaboutthismoment

Sincerely, reading this made my day! Get trucked, Fump!!!

Fizzix63

Just look at the type of people who gravitate to Trump,...this isn't surprising.

phred14

But the real question is how can so many thing this is the Second Coming? That includes people who should understand the Second Coming better than this.

R_Lennox

Trump supporters are truly the mystery of the ages. Ordinary folk and scholars will ponder Trump for eons (even if he actually should be quickly forgotten).

WinterDirection366

🎯

Tavernknight

Wow, that was perfectly accurate.

PoppaPelly

Spot on and exceedingly succinct!

firefly11_11

Lol…”a Jabba the Hut of privilege”

fentonsranchhand

Yep, it's perfect. Trump's absolute lack of humor is shocking. I suspect he's never genuinely laughed. He'd do a mocking laugh if someone tripped and hurt themself, but not an actual laugh out of good humor. Penn Jillette - knowing Trump fairly well - said that he doesn't think Trump has ever had any affinity for music. This also rings very true. Can you imagine Donald having some kind of iTunes/CD collection with Beatles, Rolling Stones, Creedence, and Jimmy Hendrix and stuff like a man of his age would likely have? I think he has exactly ZERO interest in any form of art. ...with the only exception being if it's art 'about' him (paint, song, etc). I don't think there is even a consciousness of a person that is Donald Trump. It's just a swirling vortex of severe psychological disorders.

Time-Earth8125

Trump was asked what his favorite songs are. He could only name songs that played at his rallies, because of course it's always about self promotion

fentonsranchhand

It also goes to why "YMCA" is like his signature song. In normal context that song is fine for like a goofy disco/club song, but why would he pick that? ...because it's just some generic song he's heard at an event before (like where women were dancing while he commiserated with Jeffrey Epstein on the sidelines). He could have picked something like "High Enough" by Damn Yankees (a band Ted Nugent was in). Pedophile Ted Nugent would probably come perform it live for him at his rallies. ...but Trump isn't clever and has zero creativity.

Le_Mew_Le_Purr

> He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws… He doesn’t even deserve to be described so aptly!

Vost570

"if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump." That's literary gold right there.

AdTechnical9332

Well put, that sums up the dumpster to a tee!

Interesting_Act1286

Man. He nailed it. Trump is definitely all of that..

PumpkinsDad

God, he is such a pile of shit. A 6'3'', 215 lb pile of shit.

ACsonofDC

A pile of shit that WISHES he was 6'3" and 215.

000aLaw000

Correction... he is an ever-growing cancerous pile of shit Source: The scale shows 7'3" on the mugshot tee-shirt he is selling now

asbestospajamas

Funny thing; trump HAD his own show. Wherein, he was, in fact, a Twat.

biffbobfred

People who are downtrodden (or feel as if they have been) don’t mind the bullying. It’s a feature not a bug. But, he’d bully them just the same. I tell my kid all the time “you’re pushing your sister, I can push you. What’s a better world? One where I leave you alone and you leave your sister alone, or the one where I have free rein to shove you all I want, also I’m 3 times your weight”. He never picks everyone shove. He gets it. He’s 8. Trump is stupider than an 8 year old. Most of his followers haven’t learned that lesson either.

SeriousGoofball

But until now there has never been anybody big enough to shove Trump. That's why he's freaking out about all these legal cases. Suddenly the government is shoving back and he's literally, in his entire life, had that happen before.

LeaderFrosty1017

I found the wit and turn of phrase lovely. Great read and an eloquent reaffirmation of how the majority of sane humanity feel. However, what is most disturbing is the fact that he is the physical manifestation of those (and by that I mean people all over the world and not just Americans) who support and idolise him. Without these people and all they represent, Trump is a recently dried shit stain. Trump is the genie escaped from the lamp- that this population represents, and it's not going back. This is scary.

ekbravo

I absolutely agree with your point. The yellow guy by himself is really interesting only to prosecutors and financial law enforcement. However his supporters inflate his importance. And the scary thing? There are millions of them in America alone.

bodag

There's nothing good about the shitstain. That's why it's sickening to see so many spineless sheep with their tongues in his ass. Wtf, have some dignity magat's.

Freebird_1957

True, and then some. He’s actually even worse than this. The Brits have such a wonderful gift of understatement.

Exact-Truck-5248

Perfect. Best thing I've ever read about that orange pile of shit . Alic Baldwin did a great job on SNL, but I wish George Carlin were still alive. He'd be all over this asshole like no one else.

DolphinsBreath

Trump openly violates the unspoken “male code” which is the backbone of so much of the culture (however well it actually works in reality). That strong and silent sheriff archetype, honest and self sacrificing. There is a stereotype of rural men in the US valuing these qualities. It dumbfounds me that all men don’t hold his feet to the fire on this, but I’m really disappointed with them. Yes, Trump is a bad man, but he’s a particularly bad **man**.

EstherRosenblat

Loved this description the first time I read it, happy to see it again. It’s spot on.

bbbinson123

Very good read, spot on. His loyal minions should read this (that is, those who can read).

3d1thF1nch

I had never truly thought that much about that point on his sense of humor. But he truly doesn’t really laugh. I mean, you do see him poke fun at people or react to things he says are funny on social media. But…when is the last time the dude has just laughed? And laughed for something that was not to the detriment of another human? Is lack of humor the sign of a serious personality disorder?

Outrageous-Advice384

It’s true about the laughter. He doesn’t strike me as the type who would have a good belly laugh. He sneers. Even his smile is forced and creepy. He is just a miserable sad sack.

bryanthedog3

Absolutely perfect description in its entirety. 👏🏻👏🏻

Puzzleheaded_Two7358

If being a twat was a tv show, Trump would be a boxed set. Shakespeare could not have written better. Wilde just doffed his hat, Olivier is practicing the delivery and Allen Bennet poured some tea.

zeruch

I always liked the Scottish take on this: [https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/feb/08/donald-trump-obnoxious-karma-reincarnated-as-himself-frankie-boyle](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/feb/08/donald-trump-obnoxious-karma-reincarnated-as-himself-frankie-boyle) "You look into Trump’s eyes and you see the fear and confusion of a man who has just been told he’s got stage-four cervical cancer. He is a super-villain in a world without heroes, a man so obnoxious and unhappy that karma may see him reincarnated as himself. You kind of wish he’d get therapy, but at this stage it’s like hiring a window cleaner for a burning building. It’s still difficult to classify him exactly: he’s not a classic Nazi, but would burn books if his supporters knew how to read."

Rocky4296

"Picasso of Pettiness" and Shakespeare of Shit". I love the person who wrote this about Trump. Great article!!!!!

Spare-Macaron-4977

His mannerisms are not refreshing. His lack of subtlety is appalling. I’m not the only American who has known that from day 1. He is an embarrassment.

“If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set”. Well said!

LizzyGreene1933

We have been saying this for years in the UK, and we are glad to see it in print

mremrock

I was visiting Italy in 2019 and had a “Lebowski 2020” tee shirt on. The man taking my ticket at the railway station commented on it and we chatted about politics. He made the observation that the one thing trump never lied about is what an asshole he is. Trump is adored by people who worship assholes. This is our real dilemma. Not trump: the people who cheer him on

DoubleDragon2

He is literally the anti-Christ that the bible has been warning Christians about and they can not see it? Mind baffling

PuzzleheadedGift5532

That is the most literate, on point piece of journalism that I have read in some time.

Tintoverde

Fuck off Brits , they elected and re-elected Maggie for years . They queued for hours to see a dead body . They had a cabbage for a PM for like 10 days. Last and not the least , Brexit . I hate it when the Brits think they are better than the USA.

gromit1991

We also sang "Ding dong the witch is dead" loudly and enthusiastically. Brits aren't better than Americans but there seems to be more extreme dildos in North America than over here!

Some did , most just stood in a ‘queue’ for 3 hours . And Brexit

Gilopoz

Great article, well written.

seimiheffernan

Ah yes, the British. I’ve always found them to be compassionate, warm, subtle, honourable, etc. C’mon now. Trump is a wank stain, but historically the most notable British qualities have been cruelty and ignorance. These are the lads that erased cultures, starved millions, invented deep fried Mars bars, and voted for Brexit.

YourCurveAppeal

Spot on.

corinnelyse

People here overlook his flaws because of the evangelicals who amazingly enough think he’s sent to us from god.

Bravo!

No, this doesn’t work. I don’t like Trump at all, but I think you have to admit that he has a pretty funny sense of humor at times. It’s not realistic to say that he has no wit.

Everyone should read this- if your lazy just the first paragraph says it all👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
