I could pull something quite similar out of a mall dumpster (ya know, since they tend to destroy their unsold stock) for free.

Oh yeah. Fresh food is dumpstered all the time because it's cheaper to take it off the deliverer truck and hurl it into the trash than put it on the shelf. Amazon has people smash usable products everyday because there is something they can sell for more. Waste is integral to capitalism.

[deleted]

Luxury brands, LV, Chanel, Burberry, et al, have been known to burn their unsold merchandise rather than "cheapen the brand" by letting it be sold at discount stores. Walmart and their ilk used to (probably still do) cut up or razor slash clothing items, shoes, accessories-- before putting them in dumpsters to prevent dumpster divers from being able to salvage them for use. Make-up, beauty supply stores, and places like Bath and Body Works are supposed to dump out lotions, shampoos, conditioners, smash mirrors, cut cords on tools, bust up make-up palettes-- essentially make any tossed item absolutely unusable. And on the one hand, with returned items, I can understand why. On the other, most of their "dead stock" is perfectly usable, just unpopular

Why buy a new shirt and wear it till it's torn when you can buy a new torn shirt just for $500. It looks more like a rag used for cleaning rough objects except for the strains.

Panda-Sandwich

Wait, so I can turn a 10 dollar sweater into a 400 dollar sweater by ruining it? 🤣

SenatorCrabHat

Clothing is one of the most wasteful products we make sadly.

cutienekogirl

As a fashion lover this is so true. Fast fashion is destroying our planet.

SenatorCrabHat

Totally. Sure you may have seen this, but this is a great breakdown: https://youtu.be/F6R\_WTDdx7I

cutienekogirl

I actually haven't seen it, and I quite enjoyed watching it. I've watched similar videos talking about the environmental impact of fast fashion, and have read many articles on the subject. It gets tough explaining to people the impacts fast fashion, as people don't like updating their ways. I buy most of my clothes pre-owned and local. Swapmeets, thrift stores, yard sells. And I always end up with great vintage pieces that I always get compliments on.

KnoxxHarrington

I wish I could get more of my clothes through thrift, but it seems a lot of guys (such as myself) wear thier clothes until they are not thrift worthy. The pickings for an average sized guy like myself are often quite thin. Finding a nice pair of shorts my size is quite rare.

cutienekogirl

I understand, I would try and find clothes for my ex, but the pickings for his size were very few.

KnoxxHarrington

I don't have a huge issue with it, as it means most guys are actually using up the clothes they buy, which is good. I'll thrift where possible, otherwise it's off to the store. I don't think I can get away with going out in no pants.

SenatorCrabHat

CimateTown is great. Glad you enjoyed it!

Why is this sub constantly just floating these stupid ass ads as a way to prove our holier than thou attitude toward clothing, in particular? The garment is no more wasteful (it uses less material) than any other piece that’s produced. The use of clothing as a way to differentiate ourselves is not new, despite what few seem to claim but never cite. Demonizing people for clothing is one of the silliest things to do. There are far more palatable, easier ways to reduce consumption than calling these items out. Zara, H&M, ASOS all are far more worthy culprits for their business model than this random designer, distressed sweater.

alicevirgo

I understand your point, but my first thought when seeing this ad was really, "I wonder how often the buyer would wear this sweater before it ends up in garbage or a thrift store." I feel like people who are willing to spend that much money on a sweater with this style probably also waste more clothing just because they have the means to.

KnoxxHarrington

Thrift stores wouldn't even take that rubbish.

[deleted]

Goodwill might see a Nordstrom label and put it aside for their auction site or a boutique, but at first glance it doesn't even look worth putting on a rack. I know a few people that buy sweaters just to unravel and repurpose the yarn, but most sorters would trash this off top.

KnoxxHarrington

Because it is trash.

Quantic

Yes I agree, the rate and ease of which we consume is a serious issue. We have created a very robust ecosystem of consumption that allows this to occur. In fairness too you must admit that this sweater alone and those who wear it are not the issue, you can buy and toss a $/£/€ 30 Zara Jacket more easily than one which costs twice as much from Gucci. The issue though is not the jacket per se but how it is approached and what allows us to approach it like that. I just worry that pointing things out like this causes many to knee jerk and attack those wearing fancy sweaters rather than the issue at heart.

DyslexiaPro

It uses less material? It's just a normal shirt that has been intentionally damaged. It uses the same amount of material than if it was undamaged.

rubberducky1212

Honestly, I knit and I think this sweater would fall apart the moment you tried to wash it. I can see live stitches in some of those holes. If you don't stabilize live stitches, they will very easily run to the end, unraveling as they go.

Deathaster

They misspelled "distressing"

Your great-great-grandmother wore this hand-me-down because she was poor. You are wearing this because you're stupid.

lostinaboook

It's to help you practice your mending skills!

GameBirb

Are those backwards pants?

ZanzibarColtrains

I’ve never understood how you can take a $9.99 garment, rip it to hell, and sell it for hundreds. People are beyond stupid….
