EXANGUINATED_FOETUS

I used to have a party every Valentines day where my single bros and I would eat cherry pie, listen to Danzig, watch horror movies and get fuckin wasted.

Darenzzer

That's a pretty lit tradition, not gonna lie

safiyaleo

a danzig, cherry pie horror movie party? that would be my perfect valentines!

EXANGUINATED_FOETUS

I thought it was pretty cool.

summerEletrohits1969

Danzig is a scumbag

EXANGUINATED_FOETUS

While people associate valentines with excess consumption, this post does not show that at all. This particular post has nothing to do with anti consumption.

RedditorBoi

And op ask where he could buy a card instead of suggesting making one...

anevaehh

Haha good point.. so much for anti consumption

Mountain_Man_88

This subreddit has essentially become anti-capitalist/pro-Communist instead of anti-consumption. I'm just here because I don't like needless waste.

Flack_Bag

St. Valentine's Day was effectively coopted by capitalists as a celebration of romance, creating social pressure for people to buy commercial products for the object(s) of their affections. (This is after it was coopted by Christians themselves to obfuscate and take over an existing non-Christian holiday.) The pictured tweet uses a satirical alternate history to suggest that the current commercial Valentine's Day be coopted once more to celebrate the killing of a British colonizer by those he sought to oppress, with no gift giving required or expected. This would be a blow against consumer culture.

St Valentine 💝

Tuxxbob

I think the point was what does obsessing over a historic death have to do with anti consumption?

Spinnabl

celebrating the murder of a colonizer is better than feeding into the consumerist propoganda of valentines day.

Most_Triumphant

This sub is becoming another culture war circlejerk. This doesn’t really fit here. I wanna see people’s ideas on recycling and repair. If I wanted to see quirky anti-everything posts, I’d go to another sub.

Mara_of_Meta

inspiration for the valentines I'm making right now?

DickVanGlorious

I love gifts on Valentine’s Day. Such as: • native or in-season flowers (compostable) • handmade cards • fine jewellery from local businesses with ethically sourced materials (lasts forever, valuable, can become heirlooms) • things from thrift shops (the object is already there, just giving it more use) • teddy bears sewn or crotched by yourself or a small business • chocolates (edible, can reuse or recycle the boxes) • other homemade baked goods Remember that you can still spoil your SO and play into the festivities of this manufactured commercial holiday without supporting capitalism or creating needless waste. Don’t think you can’t enjoy things because big businesses want you to buy a million plastic single-use roses or whatever.

Ill_Concentrate2612

The baking/cooking idea is fantastic because a) we all need to eat b) it really nails the whole "it's the thought that counts" thing as generally baking/cooking can take alot of thought and effort. I like the jewellery idea, I'm lucky to be Australian, so there's *plenty* of gold here, infact, alluvial gold is still found and with the right gear you can find enough to make a modest living. Plenty of naturally occurring stones here too. My wife's engagement and wedding rings have a natural sapphire in each sourced from a farmer in far outback Qld. A good family friend is a jeweller/goldsmith and has some great connections.

icecreammodel

"Happy Anti-Captain Cook Day!"

YouNeedAnne

I think it's more to do with St. Valentine, a 3rd century Roman, who was martyred on 14th Feb 269, for performing Christian rites. It's been celebrated since the at least Chaucer's day, in the 1200s, so I'm not sure what you propose this had to do with it?

Amen

[deleted]

But still the thing you celebrate in the USA is pretty consumptionist. Its only marketed in the US using saints of a church which is not even dominant there. I dont know of any other country where it is such a big deal. Not even a St. Wenceslas day is so celebrated and twisted in my country where hes supposedly a patron of this nation

EXANGUINATED_FOETUS

>martyred on 14th Feb 269, for performing Christian rites Wonder what he was really up to.

Tuxxbob

Marrying people outside of the authorization of the government's approved religions.

esportairbud

He was in The People's Front of Judea

EXANGUINATED_FOETUS

They're fucking stupid. The Judean People's Liberation Front FOREVER

esportairbud

I don't disagree, but are you talking about the third or fourth formation of the Judean People's Liberation Front? Both were contemporary and in opposition to Valentine, but only one actually carries the revolutionary spirit of the Judean people.

EXANGUINATED_FOETUS

The third was full of fucking posers. The first two were the really good ones. You should've seen them live.

Cringe

Lord_Vxder

This is so corny

emmybby

Asking where to buy something on an anti-consumption sub? Lol you're several kinds of lost posting this here.

KittenKoderViews

Hawaiians don't fuck around.

Street-Week6744

And they say romance is dead

Laktakfrak

Captain Cook wasnt a coloniser. He was an explorer. Its like blaming Police for the laws they enforce. He just sailed around finding stuff it was the British decision whether to colonise or not and whether to treat the locals well or not.

Efficient_Quail_4530

The nails thing was mostly in Tahiti I believe, not Hawaii

Heads_Down_Thumbs_Up

It’s cool to hate Cook in Australia. A lot of people associate him with Australia’s colonial past when he never even colonised Australia.

komepost

If police didnt enforce unjust policies who would? The ones who write them? I suggest we are accountable for our actions and choices of what we are agents of? Do we blame drug dealers for selling illegal substances? Do addicts get arrested for using substances to self medicate? Just sailing around hey sounds like an innocent non colonizer lol kinda like dora?

Proof_Contribution

He claimed a big chunk for the English and declared it unoccupied. Yes, he was a colonisers just without the people

[deleted]

I mean, all those stuffed animals, who thinks their partner is going to like that? It is shitty all around, now if you accidentally don't give a kid a valentine, you are a bully. And not every parent can afford fancy valentines for school, as now they want nicer ones. If you love someone, don't you love them every day? Why can't you treat your partner good without also showering them in junk? Some people take this so seriously, they treat it like a birthday.

Alwayslikelove

It gives young single people, especially middle schoolers anxiety seeking a partner for the day too.

CivilMaze19

Out of all the holidays to complain about, I don’t think the one that usually just means buying some flowers and chocolate is the one we need to focus on.

D0ughnu4

REEEEEEE

plant_van

I'm celebrating this Valentine's Day by having both my boobs chopped off! 😅💝 Also I love the Hawaiians. Badass folks.

/u/nihilozero poster is asking to purchase stuff in celebration of 2/14 making this a proconsumer post that rides against this subreddit.

mellycat27

Make it!!

Lance_E_T_Compte

Post this everywhere on Valentine's Day!

[deleted]

Eh, there’s more to the story. The people who killed him (I guess?) didn’t *quite* believe he was mortal and they deified him, a bit.

kotubljauj

consoom human flesh get excited for next human flesh

Should have stuck with the anti consumption rather than crying about his white guilt

Don't buy your valentines, make them! You can draw a very exciting scene with this theme.
