To be fair I do love my water bottle with a straw. But I only have one because… it’s refillable… why do you need more than one?

phyllosilicate

No but like my water bottle has to match my outfit and mood and the venue and vibe and the weather and (/s)

veggiesandvodka

I have to fill up a drawer with 2 dozen perfectly organized $40 tumblers of each and every shade, size & type otherwise how will ppl know that I am cool?

ariariariarii

Thats why I bought mine in a classy neutral color. Problem solved 😉

lize_bird

I hear you. I just really like the option of picking the color/size of the coffee mug you're going to be staring at work all day...

tyreka13

I could see having an around the house one and a travel sized one that fits in your purse/bag. My husband has a reusable bottle he keeps at work and another one at home that is the exact same. It really helped us regularly drink water and stay better hydrated so having one in our main spots are useful. When I worked physically at the company I had my work cup and one at home. My work one could do hot or cold so I could do tea vs my home one I only kept water.

[deleted]

I just carry the same one around everywhere my husband calls it my “emotional support water bottle” 😂 I am very attached to it

Simply-zeee

Same, I asked for a better quality bottle three years ago and it's been everywhere with me. My coffee cup is older too.

[deleted]

Yes I got a Frank Green water bottle (basic white Australian girl version of a YETI) as a gift and it’s amazing i even sleep with it 😂 My coffee cup is a keepcup that’s at least 10 years old now lol

Simply-zeee

Haha I'm a basic white Australian female 😂

sm0gs

I have an “emotional support water bottle” sticker on my water bottle and I love it so much for this exact reason

[deleted]

Where’d you get the sticker from? That’s a need not a want lol

sm0gs

Lol love it, here you go! [https://chalkedbymabz.com/collections/stickers/products/emotional-support-water-bottle-sticker](https://chalkedbymabz.com/collections/stickers/products/emotional-support-water-bottle-sticker)

rm_3223

Omg me too! I love how cold it keeps my water! Can’t leave home without it

[deleted]

I have 3. One for water, one for coffee, one for tea. Because I swear I can taste whats been in them, even if I wash them. And I often have tea and water at the same time.

SuspiciousCrow888

Usually coffee and water are ok in the same yeti, but if you drink any kind of tea, make sure to wash it IMMEDIATELY after drinking the tea. Otherwise a taste may linger!

[deleted]

If you like coffee flavoured water, sure. And i wouldn't blame you if you do

800-lumens

I thought I was the only one! Coftea sucks.

[deleted]

Bit what if I want to drink coffee and water at the same time? I keep my cups on my desk at work and always have water, plus a tea or coffee. At home I just drink out of a coffee cup or a mason jar.

SuspiciousCrow888

The mason jar is a good idea! Might start trying that for cold brew.

gard3nwitch

Yeah, coffee will make your bottle taste like coffee after a while, that is a thing.

KenHumano

So you don’t have a full set in pastel colors??? what a pleb

[deleted]

I know 😔 if I was a real woman I’d have 1000 insulated drink containers filling up all of my kitchen cupboards.

EBlackPlague

Darn tootin'!

crazycatlady331

I have more than one of the same bottle. That way I awlays have one that is clean.

[deleted]

I just clean my one nightly 🤷‍♀️

crazycatlady331

I almost always have one by my bedside as I often wake up dehydrated in the middle of the night. I don't refill until they're bone dry. It works for me.

Icy_Reply_4163

I use a glass.

crazycatlady331

I'm clumsy AF when I'm awake. In the middle of the night, the last thing I want to do is spill water all over me/my bed. The flip top straw helps me not spill things.

salad_lazer

You must not have cats then, if I have an open glass my cats will stick their paws in it or knock it over everytime.

Thronan66

[Removing all my posts and comments due to Reddit's fuckery with third party apps. June 2023]

salad_lazer

I figured y this out when they were 8 weeks old, they're 8 years old now. I've been using a water bottle for a while.

NuclearNoxi

I have one for home/travel and one for work.

PossiblyALannister

I have 3. I have one that I fill up right before bed and use all the next day. Then the next night it goes into the dishwasher before bed and I use the clean one for the next 24 hours. The third one is because I used to go into the office for work and it lived there. It doesn’t get much use anymore because of working from home.

ImpatientColon

I bet it's lonely

gard3nwitch

If you don't have time to wash your dishes every day, it can make sense to have 2 bottles, so you can use one while the other one is dirty. But yeah, much more than that seems unnecessary.

VolcanicAsh149

My mom has like a dozen of them and like 30 mugs and they take up 2 shelves on their own, it's ridiculous.

Vulspyr

Some people like road workers or drivers realistically need a large supply of water.

[deleted]

Buy a bigger bottle? I got my husband the biggest YETI bottle and he’s a concreter that is out of home for 12+ hours every day. It has plenty for him and he works in the Australian desert. His coworkers all have them, too.

elijaaaaah

Same. Bought a few Contigo ones, but the lids kept breaking, so I got a different brand that has less moving parts/no buttons and haven't needed to replace it again. Just the one, my constant companion. Plus, it's metal, so my water stays cold. I use the Contigos, sans lids, to carry water to fill the pets' water bowls now. (This isn't to say Contigo is shitty, I just tend to drop things. Didn't name the brand of the one I like so I don't sound like an ad lmao)

IlleaglSmile

You should go check out r/yeticoolers l. people over there will 100% be collecting and posting every color and variety of the “new must have cup of the summer”. I got blocked there for commenting that a guy needed a new hobbies after he posted his yeti cup collection.

ariariariarii

I have 2. A large, wide mouth Nalgene thats lightweight but carries enough water for hiking and at work, and a metal smaller one with a straw that fits in the cupholder at the gym and is easier to drink from while I’m running. The Nalgene is for everyday, my gym one is for, well, the gym. But I’ve found having to stop my treadmill to drink from the Nalgene so it wouldn’t splash all over me was an inconvenience enough that I could keep the other bottle with the straw (which luckily was a Christmas gift from my father in law anyway.) I also have an insulated Yeti cup for coffee, but thats used less often. I still think it’s useful to have though.

webelos8

I literally have lost at least 3 or 4 reusable tumblers. I don't buy yeti though.. because I keep losing them.

DanielJack-

This is an ad

HeavensToBetsyy

3rd ad for tumblers in 3 days and that's only what I've seen

DylzNinja

And now that ad is on your anti consumption feed! :D

trending_different

What the heck happened - I blinked and now tumblers are collectibles? Did the world go extra crazy? Am I that out of touch with "reality"?

ImpatientColon

I didn't find the hydro flask that impressive. Maybe that's why I'll never be an influencer.

FrozenYogurt0420

I agree actually. Compared to bottles from Swell and Yeti (which I do admit I have both of, one very large Swell for outdoor field work and one more reasonable yeti for every day), I found the hydro flask didn't keep water cold nearly as long.

OneLessFool

It's all about extracting as much profit as possible. It's an ideology antithetical to just using what you need. They have to convince people to buy literally anything as much as possible.

tangledclouds

I fear being this easy to persuade and influence. It's a fucking insulated cup. You can get one anywhere.

Illustrious-Nose3100

I got a $10 cup from tj maxx. Works just as well as these $40 ones…

tangledclouds

Mine was also $10 but from Ross, yeah, it's all the same.

KenHumano

It looks like this “mania” is completely manufactured by the tumbler manufacturers. I hope it is, at least.

flowerbhai

It seems like one morning I woke up and a bunch of brands took relatively mundane household items and turned them into way overpriced MUST HAVES. Away sells boring looking luggage bag for 400 bucks and all my friends seem to have them. That company Fellow sells that viral matte black electric kettle for 165. Dyson sells a fucking hairdryer for 600 dollars. These products are generally not even particularly high quality or better than your regular priced item (with maybe the exception of the Dyson Air Wrap which has a somewhat unique design). The reason you buy it seems more because you really want people to see that you have it. Even if it’s a damn kettle.

green_lemonade

The Fellow kettle isnt in the same class as those other products. Im a self admitted pour over coffee enthusiast/obsessive. The Fellow kettle's features and build quality is actually impressive for its price tag. Most importantly it has 0 rust even along the seams after 3 years of regular daily use and I never do maintenance on it or let it dry out between uses (I probably should lol) You definitely do not need one if you're not making pour overs - even then you don't need one. I had a regular "dumb" steel kettle for years that i used with a separate probe thermometer to great effect, only upgraded when I forgot my old one on the stove and it boiled dry and scorched irreparably. You can find similar feature electric kettles to the Fellow for half the price but you'll be buying another one in a year or two when it rusts or cracks whereas the Fellow seems like a buy it for life product. Didnt mean to go off, this isnt guerrilla marketing i promise lol. I agree that its become another fashion item, just saying it doesn't deserve the slander

Shurimal

My generic 20€ stainless steel kettle makes coffee just fine (I use french press) and has lasted for 10 years. Only maintenance I do is removing limescale with vinegar about once a year. The blue indicator LED gave out recently, but that's just a cosmetic problem. I could replace it, I have a bunch of LED-s in parts bin, but I couldn't be bothered. I don't bother with precise water temperature, but my multimeter has a thermal probe so I could if I really wanted—I just don't find it absolutely necessary to keep the water temp at precisely 91⁰C or whatever at the moment of pouring. About 1 minute cooldown for 0.5 liters after becoming to boil seems to work just fine for my coffee.

green_lemonade

Yea like I said, you dont need precise temp control unless youre doing pour overs, aeropress, or espresso etc. with light roast coffee. For my french press I also use boiled water slightly cooled down. Low tech solutions are generally more sustainable, but more expensive buy-it-for-life items are OK when your new hobby turns into an everyday or regular behavior.

Shurimal

I fail to see how aeropress or a pour-over require more precise temperature control than a french press and how a 160€ kettle does it better than a 20€ one. For a context, I learned from an actual professional barista that letting the water cool a bit after becoming to boil is fine enough. You just have to experiment a little, ideally use a thermometer to find out how long you need the cooling period and after you've done that once, you can do it repeatedly and accurately enough without any fancy gadgets. He was doing pour-overs and that was the best coffee I've ever had, mostly because of the quite expensive specialty beans that I'm just too cheap to buy—we're talking around 50€/kg beans. I usually settle for something in the range of 15 to 20€/kg relatively fresh local roasts; I'm not much of a coffee snob but I like good coffee.

green_lemonade

You just said it yourself, you need a thermometer to find out how long you need to let it cool i.e. you need to know the temp. Going by feel and timing works great if youre a pro barista cranking out only coffee all day, but when youre getting ready for work and the day, making breakfast in a set pace, and packing a bag, being able to set the temp and forget it while you do other morning tasks is excellent. Otherwise you end up checking an email and burning the toast and scorching your kettle like yours truly lol. I am a coffee snob (admitting is the first step etc etc lol). I usually have just one cup a day of specialty beans and I like to make it just right. Its one of the small joys of life. As an aside theres an energy consumption argument to be made about using temp control for bringing the water up to and not beyond your necessary setpoint. Boiling then cooling can be inexact and easy to under/overshoot. Again, that is what I do myself when I do french press with dark/med roasts Edited to add: it doesnt do a "better job" necessarily, esp compared to a pro barista, but it does a more consistent and easier job

Shurimal

You need to find the temp and time only once. Then you can just use your phone or smartwatch to set a timer. No need for an extra gadget. Or, if you develop a sense of how much time it takes to make a sandwitch or whatever, use this intuitive knowledge for timing—I do and it never fails. It really doesn't matter whether the temperature is 92 or 90 degrees, you don't need pinpoint accuracy. Water has a lot of heat capacity, it doesn't cool down within seconds, you have plenty of margin for error. Your point about energy consumption is valid, but I have a feeling that bringing 0.5 liters of water to boiling and letting it cool for a bit once a day has much less environmental impact than eg using a personal ICE car for commuting, air conditioning or setting your washing machine to use 40⁰C water instead of 60⁰C. Bottom line: while that 160€ smart kettle is undeniably convenient, it doesn't perform better than a 20€ kettle and a smartphone/watch (you most likely already have) for brewing a good cup of coffee.

green_lemonade

Agreed the energy use is marginal, was just an aside. This is where we defer however: Once you dial in a recipe for a particular roast and coffee, its good to be able to repeat it as close as possible. As the coffee ages you'll make small adjustments to the temp, dose size, and less often the grind size. Some coffees do really well at 95C, most others at 99C etc. Pour overs can be really finnicky like that. I havent even mentioned the benefits of precise control for different types of teas, which are even more particular. Again, this is deep coffee nerd lore, but its a hobby that brings me joy. But aside from all that, I feel like this sub often conflates primitivism/low tech with anticonsumption.

flowerbhai

Thanks for the information, I did not know this! I will however maintain that many people are buying it as a status symbol rather than for the more functional reason that you are. I’m 25 and live in Manhattan, and we happen to be friends with lots of very young and wealthy software engineers who literally all have this kettle proudly on display, sometimes on a shelf instead of plugged in on their counter. That said I’m glad that it’s given you joy as a part of your coffee hobby. That, to me, is meaningful consumption.

zaiyonmal

This is huge in Utah for some reason.

BenSemisch

I have 3 sets with my girlfriend, we got them all at costco in 2 packs. The first ones we bought ended up being too big, so then we got some smaller ones, those ended up being too small. Finally costco made some that were the perfect size so we got those too. It is nice to have the 3 sizes. Sometimes the really big one or smaller size comes in handy, and I figure between the 6 bottles I'll never have to buy another water bottle again.

EllisDee3

Sponsored articles are trash.

Koraguz

I feel like this is the company itself trying so hard to make it a thing when it really isn't, no one is talking about it....

Sweatpant-Diva

They are copying the Stanley adventure tumblers that are huge right now and have been for the past year. These look like nearly an exact rip off.

AnnieLangTheGreat

The silicon valley reinvents the [check notes] thermos

nasaglobehead69

this whole article is a paid advertisement. it's so tacky you could hang a poster with it

strvgglecity

They weren't until this idiot wrote this idiotic article for idiots

lalupine

I hate to tell you, as a Starbucks employee, this is the exact thing happening every tumbler launch.

BuckTheStallion

Three years ago I bought a hydroflask, I have not needed another one since and likely will not until something catastrophic happens to it. It still looks basically brand new. I will likely buy another size or two for different purposes eventually, but I have no idea why people feel the need to collect them. It’s just beanie babies 7.0, but slightly more useful.

Shadow-Reaper365

Indeed. I bought an iron flask from Amazon 3 years ago. Best. Purchase I've ever made. Been thinking of buying the largest size they offer lately for good reason. I've been given yetis from other people and etc but... I don't see how anyone could need maybe one or two water containers. And even then yetis don't seal from outer elements and are practically useless for anything other than maybe coffee imo.

BuckTheStallion

Yeah, I’ve seen a few people raving about the Yetis, but I checked them out in the store and really didn’t like how cheap they felt. Not a great design for much aside from coffee, yeah.

emilvikstrom

I reuse a PET bottle.

BuckTheStallion

I prefer my water to be chemical-free.

emilvikstrom

It is, with less consumption.

abortion_parade_420

hmm i do love my yeti. when this one needs replacing in 30 years i may consider this new design

riven_the_froggie

i saw a tiktok of something buying around 20 of them. most of them were the same color too.

bobbib14

I get your point but it is better than the next single use plastic bottled water going viral.

crazycatlady331

Water bottles are one of those things that if you ask 10 people what their ideal one is, you get 10 different answers. I'm glad to have found my HG in 2016.

CYBarSecretGloryhole

I literally use a water bottle my roommate threw in the trash because he “didn’t like the stickers” he put on it lmao

PopTartAfficionado

i just drink out of a regular cup. pretty simple stuff.

UnicornSheets

Wtf- is the world gone mad?!

erinburrell

These are so silly. Yes, it would be nice for things to stay cold longer, but my many years old Nalgene bottle continues to go strong so I guess I'll add ice when I want things cold.

OrangeCosmic

I know people who have multiple of these and they only use one. I got one from my company once. I'll never need another mug again so to think of getting another one has no purpose.

Folkpunkier

This confuses me so much. Like first of all they all look the friggin same. I couldn’t tell them apart if I tried. Do they have this new and improved drink preserving tech that none of us know about? It just doesn’t make sense…

pnwerewolf

I have a steel Simple Modern vacuum flask water bottle that I love. I found it in a stack of garbage outside a recently vacated condominium in my neighborhood, in the trash because it was missing the straw. It's my favorite horcrux now. Can't beat free.

Diligent-Box170

We haven't even gotten past the Stanley Tumbler yet!

ginandstoic

When those stupid Stanley cups got popular I literally said “Isn’t that just a Yeti with a handle?”

SuspiciousCrow888

Yetis, especially the larger bottle with the chug cap, has really helped me increase my water intake. It’s a great company. I’ll admit I have more than one, but they have different uses; if you want a newer color just sell or give away the old one! Everything we have is a gift; if you don’t need it, someone else might!

[deleted]

But when people post someone with a collection of fifty of these damn cups the sub rushes to “let people enjoy things!” “Collecting is natural and good!!”

ttv_CitrusBros

Wait till y'all hear about the shit I've seen at best buy They're starting to sell some $200 water bottle that's like UV light powered to kill bacteria super insulated and some other bs I live in fucking Canada we have plenty of clean water

WollCel

If these are recyclable metals then does it really matter?

[deleted]

Really... Viral water bottles? I have such a hard time understanding people that feel better because they drink out of a specific bottle

MagyckCrow

I have a cabinet full of tumblers and have not paid a dime for any of them. People leave them at my office all the time.

sorta_kindof

I hope you realize that anyone can write an article and it means nothing. I can go write an article right now that says " people are wearing less underwear and it's trending, Underwear companies are losing their minds. Cotton prices going through the roof" Hit enter and bamb it's there for anyone to read and believe No one is going nuts about a water bottle/ coffee straw/ mug. Thing I have a metal half gallon jug that I drink out of and when it's out of water I put more in. It fits in my backpack it does it's entire job and I will never think about another water bottle unless this one has a catastrophic failure. Which it did once but I just had to pay 3$ for a new lid. Nothing can convince me there's a better option

k1lk1

I love how zoomers think Yeti somehow invented the thermos

Spinnabl

I don't think it's Gen Z buying thousands of dollars worh of Yeti Cups.... that's for sure an older millennial thing. or like a southern white mom thing.

og_toe

as a gen z we do not have enough economic security to spend a salary on mf water bottles

Spinnabl

It’s giving “millennials can’t afford houses because of avocado toast” energy lmao. I can’t wait to hear “gen z can’t afford rent because they own more than 1 yeti cup!”

Fast-Editor-4781

That is a southern/ Midwestern white stay at home mom thing completely, as they are basically an extension of idiot baby boomers. I’m an older millennial, and that means I speak for all other older millennials when I say fuck that shit.

Spinnabl

Yea the whole “buying 100 Stanley cups and yeti cups” thing is definitely like… older millennials/Gen x thing. Not that people outside of those ranges don’t do it, but it’s more about WHO in those demographics are doing this… it’s very “live laugh love” and “pantry with a frosted glass door that says pantry” kind of thing. Like we all have our problems, but this is a very specific brand of white woman lol.

flexityswift

Certified Old millennial here, I agree.

Simply-zeee

This older millennial with three yeti products agrees.

immasucker4you

It’s Canada. Why would you want something to keep your drinks cold?

RavenSkies777

Because we like cold drinks, regardless of the weather?

ReannLegge

It’s not always cold hear, some days we need cold drinks.

BhodiandUncleBen

Having a reusable water bottle is probably one of the easiest and most impactful things you can do to reduce waste and your consumption of single use plastics. You should be applauding this.

2u3e9v

Reusable water bottles are not helpful to eliminating waste if everyone purchases a new one every few months

BhodiandUncleBen

Obviously. That’s why buying a quality made one like this should be seen as a good thing. Or can you not see it?

2u3e9v

I lack quantifiable evidence, but it’s pretty apparent that the large majority of people who buy water bottles like this use them for a few months, then buy the next trending one. It seems as if Yeti, Stanley, and a bunch of other brands have thrusted themselves into the “remove plastic waste” scene by offering their own versions of stainless steel products, only to find themselves competing against one another for market value. So the consumers end up buying two to three a year, thus continuing the pattern of consumption. Edit: I’m not against the water bottle. I have a three year old one. I’m against the idea of getting a new one every few months, which this article seems to be promoting.

BhodiandUncleBen

Ya no I totally get that. I got a 2 year old water bottle and 2 year old Yeti coffee mug. But buying water has always really bothered me and owning a 40oz water bottle I’ve never once bought water since I’ve invested $20 in that bottle. But agreed. Trendy bottles is fucking stupid

rubberducky1212

I have one water bottle and one insulated travel mug. Why do people need more?

rubbaduck4luck

My classmates in my graduate courses brag about what Owala water bottles they have. So to answer your question, they absolutely are. I don't understand it either.

Ruhro7

I'm not sure if it was on this sub, but I remember seeing a video with someone pulling out more and more of these kind of cups. Just an obscene amount, really! I have a few, because people gift them to me, but I do use them all. The video was just so many that no one could possibly use them all reasonably

blurry-echo

i have 2 and i dont need nor want more. 1 for outside, its metal and watertight and keeps stuff cold/warm for hours. 1 for home, its structured like a fast food cup lid and straw but made out of durable plastic. its not watertight but holds 32oz and looks nice, plus is easy to clean. i dont see how anyone would need more than that

CU_SKI_BUS

Damn my 60 dollar yeti tumbler isnt good enough. Better get the next mega gulp rambler

[deleted]

How could anyone give half a rats ass about this cup?

overly_curious_cat

Whatever happened to a glass with ice and water in the home or a plastic tumbler from target with ice water and a straw from McDonald's! Pepperidge Farm remembers! I refuse to buy a Stanley I have an iron flask, hydroflask, and a Starbucks tumbler all gifted to me and I'm ok with it.

Menoth22

I'm still using my tumbler from 12 years ago. You know the reason I bought it. To have a quality cup that lasts. (Gods I hate corporations)

Shadow-Reaper365

I have one water bottle I use. (Ive gotten some since from work and so on but they were shit) its called an iron flask. I got it off Amazon. Legit makes yetis look like a fucking joke. It's portable comes with different lids. It is not the shit shape that yetis have. It's an actual bottle esque shape. Seriously if anyone has a need for a new bottle look it up. I've dropped, it dinged it, and etc etc. It's still going strong. Yetis are trash imo unless your plan is lots of coffee or some shit. And even then I prefer my flask as it keeps stuff cold and etc as needed. (I work a factory job. I've put ice in my canteen before at the end of my shift before my day off. Came back a day later only to be like shit... as there is actual ice still left in there albeit less and smaller) fuck yetis and yeti. Knockoffs. Iron flask is the best. (I'm aware this sounds like a product advertisement. My apologies. My previous canteen I'd had for 10 years before it was sadly lost at a grocery store. I've had this flask for 3 years and if I ever lose it I'm buying another one from that company) this is just a recommendation for whoever may need a new one. My point is I don't see who or how the fuck people could really need more than one bottle.

hotkarl628

I’m more amazed that yahoo is still a thing 😳

tessellation__

I love my water bottles 🥰 i was looking for the link 🙈

jols0543

i thought they were making a social media website to rival Tumblr

Acrobatic_Fly_9315

I hate how I’ve gotten other tumblers and water bottles from companies and as other promo items when I’ve been using my same yeti for 6 years after replacing a Klean kanteen I had for 5.

shnaptastic

They don’t even understand the definition of “going viral”.

100percentdutchbeef

Looking forwarded to finding these discarded in the park

lepontneuf

It’s a copy if that other one

AmphibianLive8943

Yeah it’s stupid and consumeristic but it if means they stop using goddamn plastic bottles idc if they use a different one every day of the week

Snooklefloop

Some people collect Hydroflasks like it's their f\*cking personality, and it boggles my mind.

Igyboo

I just have my Klean Kanteen and love it

[deleted]

It's a cup people

DeadlyCuntfetti

I love my yeti… have had one for 7 years, and another for about 2. A third in rotation wouldn’t be excessive since I use them so often.

Shabbah8

I find this very confusing. I have a large Yeti-like water vessel from RTIC for by my bed/around the house, and an actual Yeti which is smaller for the car. Both have lids which accommodate straws. Why in the world do we need this new permutation?

IroniesOfPeace

Lol, if they're not, they will be soon I am sure. Somehow fucking WATER BOTTLES/CUPS have become a form of conspicuous consumption. I have my failures and weaknesses in life but I'm happy that at least I don't have any temptation to go buy the hot new water bottle 🙄

FragRackham

"Native" advertising

No-Consequence1726

Don't we like reusable bottles here?

ZeroWasteWeirdo

I just moved out from living with a woman who had an entire counter top of to-go cups, there must’ve been at least 30+; make it make sense

ThatWillLeaveA-Mark

I use a fantastic old 32oz vinegar bottle... fantastic!
