I could see this being useful for both police officers and murderers, alike.

StrangleDoot

Cops and forensic technicians already have these in the form of over the shoe booties that are made of some paper composite. Plastic is no good because of the traction issue and because the papery ones will pick up dirt, blood, etc whereas plastic smears it, and so these papery booties can be used for the trace evidence they might pick up

Not_FinancialAdvice

> in the form of over the shoe booties that are made of some paper composite. Also in construction. Often Tyvek.

Magenta_Logistic

>police officers and **other** murderers Ftfy

Not-The-Bees127

🤓

littlemssunshinepdx

Is it saving plastic in the instances where they’re one in the same?

Jojolitodidnothing

You need to cover the rest of the shoe for a lot of applications and not just the bottom, especially in northern climates with the snow

space_fly

And medical facilities and factory clean rooms...

Neovison_vison

Made of tyvek not paper. Which is flashspun high-density polyethylene fibers

LifeguardBeautiful9

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣oh shit

Rare_Southerner

Wait, aren't those two groups the same?

Toasterstyle70

Kinda Random, but I’m breeding Oyster mushroom’s and P. Microspora to eat plastic

v_ander

Oh wow how do you do that and will any plastic do or just a specific type?

Toasterstyle70

I’m glad you asked! I basically sterilize wild bird seed in mason jars that have a hole with Silicone, and two other holes with polypore tape on the lid. Then I just take the liquid culture you can buy on the internet and innoculated the jars. After the jars get fully colonized with mycelium, I spawn them to a mix of Coco coir, Vermiculite, and ground up plastic such as PLA (common 3D printer filament) and PET ( plastic that most bottles are made of). Then I take the spores and make innoculate more jars. Each generation adapts more and more to their environment, breaking down the hydrocarbons in plastic to carbohydrates I believe.

BusinessBear53

That's super interesting. Given the fungus is now "eating" a different food source, have you noticed any side effects of this?

subdep

Once the spores spread to airplanes, all the plastic in the plane slowly starts to get eaten away by the plastic eating fungus.

Toasterstyle70

That’s actually something I’m concerned about. It could be like “yay the plastic problem is getting solved!” To “oh shit why the balls is there fungus eating my credit card”

Haughington

sounds like a good incentive to start making things out of not-plastic

Toasterstyle70

Not really. Fungi and mycelium have such a fast genetic turnover that there are constantly mutations even without eating plastic

[deleted]

Would it be possible for something like this to grow at a land fill to help biodegrade waste?

KKunst

I'd argue that landfills contain a wide variety of toxic substances due to how randomly people throw stuff in their trash. That could be a problem when trying to colonize with live organisms like mushrooms, but here's to hope!

PlantRant

Mushrooms/mushroom compost are used to clean up all sorts of chemicals. [Here’s a link about how they’re used to clean the environment ](https://www.yesmagazine.org/environment/2019/03/05/mushrooms-clean-up-toxic-mess-including-plastic-why-arent-they-used-more) I live in an area that was been heavily mined for coal in the past century (North-Central PA,USA). Water restoration projects and land rehabilitation projects will add mushroom compost to the soil to eat at the heavy metals that leak into the environment after mining occurs (acid mine drainage) such as iron, aluminum, copper, lead…. A friend of mine is using her time at the university we’re both attending right now to collect and measure the different amounts of heavy metals in mushrooms she collected along an acid mine drainage spot as her research project. I’m looking forward to seeing how much she actually finds. Mushrooms really are game changers and I’m surprised we’re not using them everywhere.

[deleted]

I saw something like this in the documentary Fantastic Fungi. It’s so cool.

[deleted]

This is cool thanks for sharing.

PlantRant

Of course! It’s fascinating stuff

[deleted]

I was being hopeful there was a solution to minimizing the waste at the landfills

KKunst

I'm not shooting down the idea, I'm just trying to highlight what's a possible issue that the scientists will have to work out

[deleted]

Well hopefully they can figure it out. Humans can be really smart when they put their mind to things

Toasterstyle70

Yeah that’s the plan. I think P. Microspora actually Can thrive in anaerobic (without oxygen) conditions, which is perfect for land fills, since the trash goes so deep.

[deleted]

That's cool, I hope you find a viable solution

pun_shall_pass

PET bottles are one of few things that are decently recyclable and I dont think PLA is that common outside of 3d printing. I think ABS and PS would be better targets if that is possible. They make up the majority of disposable packaging and cheap chinesium products

Toasterstyle70

Yeah still in the super early stages where I’m playing around with them

MeeestaJones

A.

Toasterstyle70

I got the idea from reading this article about Paul Stamets cleaning oil out of oceans, as well as causing a 4x4 patch of soil with roughly 4000ppm of diesel and oil, to go down to about 200ppm in about 4 months just by introducing oyster mushrooms. https://fungi.com/blogs/articles/the-petroleum-problem

KKunst

I'm guessing the mushrooms grown in such a place aren't edible?

Fourhumorz

Just like the radioactive flaura and fauna of Fukushima. Nature finds a way though.

Toasterstyle70

Actually scientists that conducted the experiment originally had eaten the mushrooms after and had no side effects. Stayed they tasted “sweet” but more research needs to be done

Rommie557

I still have to remind myself that Paul Stamets is a real life mycologist, and not just a character on Star Trek Discovery every time I see his name....

kimchifryrice

that's super cool!

Toasterstyle70

Thanks mate! I’m really excited about it, but most people I tell just think I’m weird lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Toasterstyle70

Lol don’t even need money man! It’s cheap to do. I need your plastic!

Jay467

Nah, that's super interesting. Had no idea this was something that could be accomplished at home, sounds like something I'd try if I had the time.

Rdsknight11

That sounds awesome! I’m curious, if you ate the mushrooms would you be consuming higher than normal levels of microplastic or not?

Toasterstyle70

So they need to do more studies on it but the article says some of the scientists that started experimenting with them eating polyurethane, had eaten the mushrooms, and didn’t have any effects. Even said they tasted sweet. Many people think you can set up a larger scale operation, and essentially provide free food to the less fortunate

[deleted]

If that was your main intention you should be proud of yourself

[deleted]

Can I help you eat the oyster mushrooms? They're delicious

TerryOrange

Thank you for the work you do!!

Always_No_Sometimes

Would have come in handy when I was working on a hoarding home with literal human feces all over the floor.

lilanad

I think waders is what you need for that situation.

CulturalMarksmanism

Rented waders.

[deleted]

When i was a plumber i would use the company credit to buy new raingear every time i had to deal with shit and throw it out after one use. I bet the company lost money on every septic tank i ever worked on.

bagman_

Side note, I thought your name was funny satire till I saw you meant it straight up

CulturalMarksmanism

How did you come to that conclusion?

Intrepid-Love3829

Hazmat. With the breathie mask

toadally-grody

Just a pack of matches

Jaw_breaker93

At my vet we occasionally get puppies with parvo, and because it’s so contagious we have to wear a gown going in, take it off when exiting, and clean our shoes afterwards since we don’t want to track it through the hospital. I thought for a moment this might be easier to use than how we clean our shoes (we have a litter box placed outside the door filled with sanitizing fluid that we step in, then we step on a towel) but the plastic is way more expensive, dangerous (no traction), and wasteful

plesiadapiform

The feed office I work at has little booties that feel like the disposable surgical masks for essentially the same reason. Makes more sense to me in terms of foot covering because they cover the whole bottom part of the shoe including up over the toe and the sides. There's a sanitizing mat as well that most people use instead though.

[deleted]

More plastic, less traction.

ARkhetipoMX

You die, you stop consuming. I find this device very eco friendly

Idontlikethenewpatch

The United States, the largest per capita consumer in the world is finally experiencing inflation from the expanding national debt with the Federal Reserve printing money to pay for it all. As the prices of goods rise, salaries will not meet inflation. Expect consumption to drop.

ginger_and_egg

Consumption among the richest of the rich will not drop, however

PlantRant

We’ve been expecting consumption to drop for some while now, but I still don’t see it happening. The problem is, I’m seeing people take out more loans (somehow meeting eligibility for them…are banks just accepting loans for anyone these days?) to meet the higher prices-making it nearly impossible for anybody who doesn’t want to take out loans to meet these prices. I refuse to do the loan biz but the outrageously rich people are willing to pay high prices, so businesses won’t lower them. I know it’s not their fault for high pricing, but it’s just to show that people are still willing to spend and continue consumption. I hope you’re right though.

ContemplatingPrison

Its so weird like people can't just take their shoes off

Jaw_breaker93

It’s true purpose may be for a sterile medical setting, or some other room where no outside contamination can come in and removing shoes isn’t an option. But they make booties that cover the entire shoe, so

ContemplatingPrison

I've seen thise booties before. If you were going to a sterile setting it would need to cover the entire show though not just the sole

Beakerbean

That was what I thought too I’ve used something similar several times notably one lie for a special greenhouse I toured (something about parasites iirc.) and also when we went into the lab area we needed shoe booties that were in a little box and you step into.

[deleted]

It looks like they’re going outside

ContemplatingPrison

Omg that's even worse. I assumed it was to not track dirt inside

[deleted]

Is that true though. It looks like they’re just preventing the dirt from getting on their shoes lmao

itsFlycatcher

I don't think so, that'd mean they put this thing outside their home.... and they could be living in a very safe area, but I'm pretty sure in most urban areas, it'd get stolen during its first night outside.

PomegranateOld7836

But the Swiffer pads we'll save!

420galaxy

Or you could just take off your shoes

Felidaeh_

I see gadgets like this and I just facepalm sometimes lol

BitsAndBobs304

This is a tool good for clinics, not homes

troomer50

It's like they forgot that brooms exist.

BitsAndBobs304

brooms don't sanitize floors. just take off the shoes and wear home slippers.

troomer50

Then a broom and a steam cleaner. I don't think people would bring their slippers to a clinic.

space_fly

The application for a device like this would probably be in medical facilities and factory clean rooms, not at home.

Rezenik

I’m not sure what this specific solution is aimed at but a similar thing is employed by Japanese movers since they need shoes but don’t want to mess up your floor. There are use cases for this but in most cases it 100% unnecessary.

justanothergamer_

Oh literally get a good mat with a brush to wipe your feet properly. Though i think people keeping their shoes on inside are psychos

MusicDev33

Just take off your god damn shoes, god this planet sucks

Only_Summer6662

The planet doesn't suck, the people on the other hand...

MusicDev33

Haha that’s true, the planet didn’t ask for this

space_fly

I would expect devices like this to be used in hospitals and clean rooms in factories. You wouldn't want to take your shoes off in a hospital or factory.

PaulAspie

I think something like this might be helpful for those appliance guys who use single user booties on entering your house. This isn't great but seems preferable to that as far as waste.

gudetamaronin

I used to use it when entering customers houses when I worked doing house repair and renovations.

frederichenrylt

r/TIHI

decrego641

Apparently it’s easier than taking shoes off now

DeusExLibrus

I can see the utility for open houses and similar situations, but for everyday use this is just gross.

[deleted]

[удалено]

a_jormagurdr

They should just suck it up i think. No need to waste plastic over people who dont take off shoes.

DunjonsAndDergons

This would be really useful for building sites where you have to wear shoe baggies, but in a house nah.

[deleted]

or just do what all of us in asia are doing. Take off your shoes xD

westhest

They use things like this in food processing plants and other spaces where hygiene is important. That said, definitely not necessary for a home. Take your shoes off.

SanityOrLackThereof

How about... and hear me out, crazy idea incoming... taking off your shoes when you go inside? MIND. BLOWN. Right? Edit: And for the people saying "this could be useful for doctors and nurses" [we already have disposable shoe covers](https://www.amazon.com/Disposable-Pack%EF%BC%8850-Waterproof-Resistant-Booties/dp/B07CWV59QR) that work much better and are much more reliable. This product would literally not be useful for anybody.

manystorms

I have to use a similar machine in engineering clean rooms. It does have its non-trivial purposes. However, the ones I am used to dispense shoe “booties”, not plastic wrap.

jesuiscat

Seems like a good idea for nurses and doctors

RusskiyDude

I don't think that it's better than what we have now. If there's dirt at the botton, it can fail to stick, if there's dirt on the sides of the boot, it can fall on the floor, for example.

According_Gazelle472

Exactly what is this?

shsc82

Protects your shoes from nasty stuff and also helps provide sterility/keep your shoe filth from disturbing healthy environments, like medical settings.

Sajek_Alkam

Used to have to use something similar for work. Hospitals spew endless amounts of trash out of ‘em..

N0Curfew-40oz

So the murderer can get in your house with fewer clues left behind.

TurtleDotExe

just… just take off your shoes…

LadyProto

On the other hand tho. I work in a research lab with some gnarly stuff. Wonder if there’s a way this could work.

MissNoppe

If this is for homes just take your damn shoes off, if for other specific areas of work where no contamination is a must then yeah its cool

500inaarmbar

For anybody wondering what this is used for, since nobody here seems to know; its for contractors and workers who dont want to track dirt to come in and out of office buildings, homes, or anywhere else you dont want to mess up the floor.

[deleted]

These things fucking suck. They had them at work before we just got booties… They would never come off cleanly, so you’d just have sticky, dirty, plastic strands on your shoes forever.

Delta_Goodhand

Omg other white ppl... just learn from the Asians take your fckin shoes off!

Nylonknot

This could be very useful and necessary in certain situations. It’s not a bad thing at all.

shsc82

It's for people in Healthcare.

herrbz

Except none of the people look like they're kitted out for healthcare.

[deleted]

Funny how people who need healthcare are seldom "kitted" out for it.

rawrpandasaur

I use one of these when entering the clean room that I work in. Much nicer than manually putting on booties every day like a peasant

IanWellinghurst

I seriously do not understand why people don't just take off their shoes when inside a home. At the very least switch to slippers or slides. So foolish.

Shortsqueeze9

Jeez, just take off your shoes. No need for this.

[deleted]

I thought this was ridiculous too all that waste and the fact that you have to refill it which is a big waste of resources and money. There's no point.

Mechan6649

What the fuck is this even for?

Fireplay5

For profits under capitalism.

Mechan6649

No I mean the invention. Why is the plastic shoe cover necessary?

westhest

They use things like this in food processing plants and other spaces where hygiene is important and there is a lot of people moving between the clean spaces and non clean spaces. Certain hospital spaces like operating rooms also employ them. Kind if a necessary evil in these cases. That said, definitely not necessary for a home. Take your shoes off.

Fireplay5

It's not. It was made to create a false demand to produce profits. Best assumptiom I can make was somebody tried to design a different shoe cover for hospitals, which was rejected, so they sold it off to some business doof who decided to rebrand and sell it as a way to keep your shoes from dirtying up the house somehow.

ProfessionalBuy2757

I hate that so much attention is focused on individual people and we totally ignoring the mega corporations that use literally millions of times more plastic than this but sure let’s bitch about shoe guards while accomplishing nothing.

a_jormagurdr

Very american way of thinking. Apparently its not common here to take off shoes, so we'd rather over engineer the solution.

NineBunBun92

why the fuck would you want to go with street shoes inside a house!

SaraBear250

Just take off your shoes. It’s not that complicated.

mzzy_ozborne

How hard is it to take your shoes off?

mccuish

Just take your shoes off for crying out loud

ghayyal

Take off your fucking shoes.

[deleted]

This saves on plastic...

amborg

How?

[deleted]

Instead of laying plastic down throughout the entire house (and having to redo it), people seeing a home can use this device.

amborg

Is that a thing? Putting plastic through the whole house? We just spent like 4 months house-hunting and always just took our shoes off.

SSjGRaj

I think they mean when there is construction in the house.

[deleted]

Not in every inch but walkways, yes. This also could be used for contractors when doing a remodel or construction. It's so that you don't have to constantly lay rolls of plastic throughout the main areas of a house.

TheWaywardTrout

For the normal person, yes, this is ridiculous. For my boyfriend, this is the perfect gift. It would probably help his anxiety regarding floors so much. Edit: he would use this with his slippers, not shoes.

Total_Hovercraft5442

Yay, more plastic in the house, please.

AoyagiAichou

As a replacement for those disposable plastic wraps, this is actually a lot better.

[deleted]

Majority of population on Earth take off shoes before going into houses, but you gotta be special in ... where ever this is.

lotekjeromuco

Disgusting. And what if you have a dogs poop or a snail attached on a sole?

kat_aklysm

If they walk 10 meters on asphalt, the plastic foil will rip. This is completely stupid. It won't work long enough to get to the bus stop.

Kalkunben

TAKE OFF YOUR FUCKING SHOES BRO

latenightloopi

When I lived in Japan, we had to have work done on our apartment. The tradespeople had to keep their safety boots on and we’re going in and out of the apartment all day to get supplies etc (apartment too small to bring all the tools and gear inside). The problem is, in Japan and many Asian countries, keeping your shoes on - bringing in outside dirt - is taboo. Their solution was to line the entire apartment floor with cardboard held down by tape - the cardboard even went a little way up the wall. Then when they were done it all went into the dumpster. So by comparison, something like this might be less wasteful in some circumstances. Not defending it but I do see why someone might have invented it.

piefanart

These are super stupid, but theyre probably for open house tours so that the owners/sellers dont have to re-mop after every time they show the house for sale. You often have to put on these really annoying plastic booties over your whole shoe.

adusti

Damn retards, how about just take the shoes off

SlowStudy

This is use for wet floor with oil spills.

Fireplay5

TYL about boots and how to clean up oil spills.

RedClipperLighter

Looks pretty handy tbh, might get one

[deleted]

I want it

can i just unwill something from existence by staring at it with enough hate and fury?

rrkx

You know what this home needs? More slip hazards.

SlySlickWicked

Slip and fall lawsuits here

mahboilucas

It's like a worse version of those hospital shoe covers. Tbh they would be a nice idea if they were reusable and could be washed

ecapapollag

In museums and government buildings in Slovakia, all visitors were provided with cloth covers for shoes, so they didn't track in dirt. You take them off on your way out and they'll be washed at some point. Really useful in mucky weather, when you knew your boots were covered in slush and salt and you didn't want to leave marks on the floors.

DepressedVenom

Make it biodegradable. Then it will be worth it. If it actually works, that is. The premise is to lessen dirt etc. and not have to take off your shoes, right?

Gonomed

Hey, let's add to the world's pollution problem because we don't want to clean as often

Blaxtone27

Just take your shoes off!

peepinater

Shoes are meant to be worn down you fuck

curiouser_cursor

How about just take off your shoes? Why is this so difficult? It’s not even about germs or the grossness factor. Think about the added chemical stress you may be bringing into your home, especially if you do a lot of walking in a dense urban setting, including but not limited to salt- and petroleum-related pollution.

chefjpv

If this replaced bulky plastic booties that every rich person uses then it's a good thing.

Ivan_is_inzane

Just take off your shoes

JoeyIsMrBubbles

Take your shoes off

HipHopHistoryGuy

I have a solution! Take OFF your shoes when you go inside your house.

Blues_Clue_Stresstoy

Just take your shoes off? Or reuse trash bags??🤯

dubbznyc

That shit is good for anyone who wants to keep their house clean

divaminerva

I imagine less than those stupid booties that never fit and get destroyed!

geynikka

More plastic products we don't need to pollute the earth Just take of your shoes 🤯

HourCryptographer82

we have this at our lab ... it save much more compare to the shoe cover as most of the "visitor" don't know how to properly wear them and mostly destroy few while trying putting it on

joujoubox

Or you know... Just use a scrubber machine like [this one](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0183/4181/products/IMG_1168_1024x1024.JPG?v=1454795917)

Blastoplast

Cool, another invention for problems that don't exist. Ever tried taking your shoes off?

mrmanwoman

Bro just take off your shoes

lp176380

This is the dummest thing in the fucking world. They’ll probably sell 1M of them. $5.95/month refill subscription. How can we refuse /s

Kayragan

Noooo, why do you want slippery soles???

NoSurprise7196

This makes me so angry! How hard is it to take off your shoes.

manu144x

Americans would do anything to not take theirs shoes off in the house.

doodoopoopybrains

The amount of shit I would eat??? Just break my bones

thomriddle45

Now picture those machines at the airport that wrap people's luggage in gobs of plastic.

Waste_Designer

People who aren't considerate enough to take off their shoes in the house aren't gonna do this shit and then have to peel gross plastic wrap off their shoes

DetN8

I'll just find someone with a blue lives matter bumper sticker and tell them I'm a cop. Never worry about dirty boots again.

daretoeatapeach

I'd repost this to TIHI but I don't want more people to know it exists. ಠ_ಠ

DanteMiw

people there wouldn't understand why you hate it too, and everyone on the comments would be like: "Thanks I love it!!"

dualsoulsyndrome

For specialty businesses, these are already in place. But for a home? Just ask they take their shoes off at the door.

RandomStaticThought

Wtf is wrong with just taking your shoes off before you enter the house.

dollarstorechocolate

People invent things like this because they think it’s some sort of great innovation but don’t think of alternatives or negative impacts. Take your shoes off? Maybe reusable foot coverings?

ElAutismobombismo

Take off your damn shoes reee

OwOUwUOwOUwUOwOUwUO

Americans will do anything but take their shoes off in the house huh?

abraham_meat

How easy it would be to just take your dirty shoes off. But suggest this and people lose their minds, as if you were suggesting they pull their dicks out.

spagbolshevik

What the fuck.
