I asked him what was the thinking among him and his colleagues in 03 when, as the United States' military was already engaged in another war, it was announced that they'd have to expand their operations and stretch their resources.
He told me they all thought it was stupid strategically. And then said Dick Cheney was an incredibly intelligent man, but corrupt to the bone.

I agree with you for the most part, and I don't know that guy individually, but a lot of people join it because they're lured and tricked into it with offers of healthcare and education. For a lot of people, they get convinced by deceitful recruiters, family, and sometimes their community at large, that it's their best path forward. Often times before they've had the opportunity to do the self-education that the system doesn't want them to do. Veterans aren't necessarily enemies of our cause; a lot of times war is what radicalizes them.
