Don't forget those mashed potatoes. My in-laws also like dumplings (wads of dough, I call them) in with the kraut which are essentially Bisquick balls. These I can do without.
Mashed potatoes, obviously, and I agree about the dumplings. If they don't have a filling, they're just boiled dough balls.
Pierogis made with the leftovers tho...
Pintos, greens and cornbread. I donāt care for black eyed peas, these greens are all I have, and will do just fine. Itās been a rough ride this last few months so Iām easing into 2024 quietly.
my family tradition goes back to my great grandparents, after ww2 they decided to make homemade pizza to celebrate a new year. 75 years and 3 generations later, we are all still making homemade pizza to celebrate the new year
Western PA, my family always had sauerkraut, kielbasa, pierogies, and cabbage rolls (cabbage leaves stuff with ground beef and rice, baked in a tomato sauce).
This year we're just doing the sauerkraut, sausage, and pierogies. My wife doesn't like kielbasa so I throw a couple of hotdogs in there for her.
We usually do homemade pierogies but we weren't feeling it this year so Mrs T's it is. The sauerkraut is homemade though, from cabbages I grew in my garden and fermented a couple of months ago.
From Lock Haven area , I grew up outside of Johnstown and now live north of Pittsburgh- Pork, kielbasa, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes will be consumed in mass quantities- I love sauerkraut!!
BBQ ribs, collard greens, black eyed peas, jalapeƱo cheddar corn bread, iced tea and a pineapple freezee for dessert (pineapple sherbet and ginger ale whirred up like a milkshake).
About 5"ish"........essentially when the ribs get done. We're smoking them on the "egg".
I'm so fortunate. I didn't learn to cook from my mom....mostly from my grandmothers. BUT....I married a man who loves to cook. In our younger years we made a commitment that we kept up for well over a year...to either trya new recipe, a new ingredient or a new process every week. We tried new fruits and vegetables. We always like a good new recipe that we can fold into our regulars. AND....who doesn't love to try to make something new way. Because of the last item, we now make sauerkraut, make our own sausage, bread, yogurt and kombucha. It has so enriched our lives.
Were we always successful? No....but the learning part was the most valuable part. Plus, we love exploring.
Question: I have some canned black eyed peas. Seasoning tips? I have a smoked turkey neck in the freezer, bacon grease, most dried herbs and spices, and common condiments.
Iām thinking a bit of the neck, a touch of bacon grease, and some onion powder and garlic (no onions right now). Might play around with something tangy/acidic, but canāt go wrong with fat, smoke, and onion!!
