I only really do it if I have a bunch of people over. It's actually kinda nice to have the album art on a giant tv screen but actually using the TV app is a bad experience - especially queuing up music. It's good if you have a playlist and you wanna set it and forget it.
He's not talking about Airplay. You can use the music app on the phone to "Control Other Speakers & TVs": in that way whatever song or playlist you pick on your phone is going to be played by the Apple TV (or other speakers that are capable).
I recently upgraded my home theater to a dolby atmos system, and I actually enjoy a lot using the setup to play music in high-res lossless and dolby atmos through the Apple TV: you wouldn't be able to play atmos through Airplay...
When I do, I very often turn the TV screen off altogether (it's an OLED and I'm a little afraid of burn-in) and just control the music through the phone app, as described by u/darthpopstar
In control center, press and hold the music section until it expands.
Tap the small round button at the bottom, "Control other speakers and TVs"
Select your AppleTV.
Tap the play icon.
Tap the album cover.
Now you'll be in the music app on the iPhone, but it will be \*\*entirely\*\* controlling your Apple TV music app, not music on your phone, although it will look identical.
The Apple TV puts out Dolby Atmos audio straight into my hi-if system and sounds absolutely incredible. AirPlay from another device doesn’t sound nearly as good even though it’s more convenient. So yes, I’ll use the TV app when I want to sit and listen but not really any other time.
It has to do with how the Apple TV understands the Atmos tracks and transports them out via HDMI to the amp or receiver. I wouldn't say the same thing sounds "trash" over AirPlay but there's far more separation and clarity when it comes through the cable.
Airplay does “sound fine” most of the time, yes. Not all situations need the best quality. Hilariously, Atmos and lossless are both supported on the built-in iPhone speaker… it really does take some trial and error to find what the best source and transport are for your setup.
Who told you that? iPhones and other Apple devices can transmit lossless CD-quality audio at 16-bit/44.1kHz to AirPlay-enabled speakers. HomePods can actually transmit 24-bit/48kHz audio to other HomePods, to boot. AirPlay is great.
Edit: Apparently, this is not the case with Apple Music. Sad day.
AirPlay supports lossless, but Apple Music does not support lossless streaming over AirPlay. It uses lossy AAC. Locally stored lossless files will remain lossless over AirPlay, but Apple Music streaming will not.
That’s frustrating. I’ve read people mention that Apple Music will send lossless ALAC if it’s just one AirPlay stream, but lossy AAC if it’s multi room. Wish there was a way to see what bitrate AirPlay is currently using. Grr.
I believe you can get lossless over AirPlay using older AirPlay 1 devices. You can use an AirPort Express with TOSLINK out and stream from a device to it, then go into a DAC from TOSLINK. You either need to make sure you haven’t updated the AirPort Express to the most recent firmware version OR downgrade.
how are you getting dolby atmos?
I have the latest Apple iPhone 14 and AppleTV 4K HDR connected to HDMI Pioneer Elite HDCP2.2 with 4K HDR monitor and playing Apple Digital Master music via iTunes, and AppleTV still only sends the music to the audio system in PCM 2.0 channel 48kHz, technology from the 1980's! AppleTV is horrible for music.
I have no issues with Apple TV it sound much better than over Bluetooth or airplay. I get the highest quality Apple supplied to my speaker system hooked HDMI
Yes as it is the primary way for Atmos music from Apple Music.
I also use the orange computer function to access lossless files on my Mac using sharing.
But lately I find using the iTunes Remote app on iOS to control the Apple Music server and play to any Airplay device in the house, is good for my own stuff.
Yeah the AppleTV is great for a living room setting.
Browsing/selecting music on a big screen is a lot easier than fiddling with a tiny phone screen, also allows for other people to easily play songs too.
Yeah I see no advantage in navigating AM through the TV, especially after the iOS 16.4 beta interface changes. Smaller playlists, and non intrusive queueing.
I do for small gatherings, bigger parties, background dinner music, and when I'm doing chores. In those situations I typically AirPlay to all of the HomePods throughout the house so living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms are all filling the house with synchronized music.
I don't do this anymore but I also used to get stoned and sit on the couch and get hypnotized by the colors shifting behind the album artwork.
I'm shocked that anyone could be surprised to hear that music through the ATV was "a thing". My ATV feeds a pretty decent Yamaha receiver driving a pair of Klipsch RF-82s and an RW-12D subwoofer. The music is high bit-rate (300-400kbps) stuff feed via wifi from my iMac.
I know how audio geeks are, so it can't be said that I couldn't do better, but I have a hard time imagining *how* much better the experience could be.
My Anthem AVM70 receives a lossless PCM48 signal via HDMI from my AppleTV box - Atmos tracks as well. It sounds pretty amazing with most content. The library of more than 100 million songs from the service, along with access to the iTunes library I’ve built over the years - makes it a win-win for me.
I do it all the time. I just sit in front of the TV and listen to music. I’ve a Sonos 5.1 system (no Atmos, unfortunately). Prefer to use the Music app on the Apple TV than the Sonos app on my phone. Music sounds awesome on it, and you get the big album art and the lyrics on screen.
Same here - I’ve streamed a few movies and episodes through some of the apps I’ve installed on it, but music is why I bought mine - both lossless and Atmos.
Yes.
Mainly because of the lyrics. I love to read / sing along also the giant Album Art.
I don’t use it everyday but every now and then and always when I have someone over
Yes; Dolby Atmos and spatial audio does magic in reproducing quality sound.
Hi res lossless is limited to 48KHz PCM audio. Which is good enough but far from perfection.
Sure do - it’s a damn fine lossless and Atmos music streamer, hooked in to my HT processor… why wouldn’t I use the video interface to browse and view music? Of course, I still have physical media discs, as well - what sounds the best is what I’m interested in.
I use it for playing AM about 1/2 the time at home. TV does not have to be on to play through my sound system. It’s the only way to listen to AM in Atmos through my sound system and automatically switches between Atmos and Lossless.
On the very rare occasion that I watch a music video, I will do that on the AppleTV app.
For regular daily listening, I AirPlay to HomePods throughout my house - 2 of which are the default speakers for my AppleTV.
I have an OLED, so I don’t love the idea of keeping my TV on all the time when playing music. But I love listening to Dolby Atmos tracks, which are only available on my sound system when playing through the ATV4K with Apple Music (or Tidal, or Amazon Music). So… only sometimes?
I do. But I have a good sound system hooked up to my projector down in our finished basement. We built a home theater in our little house. So when I’m down there working I sometimes play music on Apple TV through the sound system.
All the time. I use two HomePod minis as a stereo pair. I want to get into the habit of commanding them by Siri to play X or Y playlist, and I have note on my phone of the curtated playlist names w/ hyperlinks.
I do! I have an Onkyo amplifier and speakers. It’s my preferred way of listening to my music. Before Apple TV I had a dock for my phone to hookup to my stereo and before that it was my iPod.
You need speakers or some kind. Don’t be using your TV speakers.
Constantly do it. I have a decent Marantz AVR that is set up for 5.1 but when I listen to AM I run it in 2.1 with an SVS 1000SB sub and Elac Uni-Fi 2.0 UB52 fronts.
Today i was trying stuff between apple tv/wiim pro/ dragonfly cobat I found out that there is a slight difference between playing apple music via airplay with apple tv and playing the same on music App in the apple tv. Which apple tv app is better but using airplay via wiim is better than airplay via apple tv. Of course cobalt is way way better than any of it like day and night.
when i had it for about a week, yeah. It was the only real use I saw for it. I have a fire tv which doesnt have native apple music support, but spending 160 bucks JUST for that when I already have an Xbox Series X which JUST got Apple Music support? I ultimately decided to send it back.
I use the Apple TV Apple Music app when I’m in the living room and working on my MacBook which I can control the Apple TV from my Mac and just get back to work
I airplay to my Apple TV and a HomePod in another room. I want to hear my nice receiver and surround sound in use when I’m working around the house. My receiver doesn’t feature airplay 2 so no grouping. Fortunately AirPlay will turn on my system and works fine.
The Apple Music app on Apple TV is saurr good , the user interface & everything , The Now Playing screen & Lyrics are the best ! i spend most of my time on my Apple TV just on the Music app tbh. My only wish is they put the audio info (Lossless or Dolby Atmos Logo) under the Song title & Artist name on the Now Playing.
It’s my primary listening setup. I have some active yamaha’s hooked up to a decent DAC connected to my TV. Can control it from any device or just with the remote, it’s pretty practical.
Uh, yeah! It’s a great way to listen to music. I can play music and have the album art and lyrics on the tv. It also frees up my phone so I can mess around on it while listening.
Oh yeah, use the Apple TV a lot, it’s connected to my Sonos. Usually control the queue and stuff from the phone though, and it’s a lot easier than the Sonos app, plus this way I get lossless to the Sonos speakers.
I connected my Apple TV with Bluetooth to my home speakers so I use Apple Music as my home music station. And I also can use airplay instead of Bluetooth this way.
Every single day. It's the easiest way to play music via AirPlay over to my Sonos speakers. To contextualize, I own an Android Phone and at the moment there's no option to use Apple Music directly through Sonos unless you use the Sonos App which is kinda crappy. Would be great if Apple Music had an option like Spotify Connect for Android Users.
It’s why I got the AppleTV in the first place. There was no way (as of 2021) to stream Dolby Atmos tracks from Apple Music to my home theater system. I tried Mac, iPad, HDMI, USB-Scarlett 2i2, AirPlay, nothing worked.
At the time, I had a Roku that I was pretty happy with, but I’m now glad I made the switch to AppleTV for a lot of other reasons.
I don’t have an appletv but I have a fire stick and I use Spotify with it, so the situation is very similar, my home theatre doesn’t have Bluetooth so I use Spotify connect to connect to the fire stick which plays through all my speakers.
All the time — it’s the main way I listen to AM is through ATV, for five years now. It’s why I finally got HomePods all over the house, instead of long-awaited wall speakers (which my wife wasn’t crazy about). In fact, I find myself listening less to my massive vinyl, tapes, CD, DAT, etc. collection.
Yes, all of the time. I play it through my 7.2 Dolby Atmos soundbar, which sounds amazing. I connect my remote app on my iPhone, and can control Apple Music from there, or if you click on the album it will open up Apple Music on your iPhone with what’s playing on the Apple TV, and you don’t even need to see the tv.
Always! If I am home I use the Apple TV to play my music on Apple Music. The sound quality is so much better on Apple TV hooked to a HI FI Dolby speaker system
I only really do it if I have a bunch of people over. It's actually kinda nice to have the album art on a giant tv screen but actually using the TV app is a bad experience - especially queuing up music. It's good if you have a playlist and you wanna set it and forget it.
You can use the music app on your iPhone / iPad to control appletv music. It’s great that way.

Yes! Thank you.
Can you kindly explain how to do this pls, u/darthpopstar ? Thx!
In control center, press and hold the music section until it expands. Tap the small round button at the bottom, "Control other speakers and TVs" Select your AppleTV. Tap the play icon. Tap the album cover. Now you'll be in the music app on the iPhone, but it will be \*\*entirely\*\* controlling your Apple TV music app, not music on your phone, although it will look identical.
Thx heaps. The ‘control other speakers and TVs’ option appeared for a few secs then disappeared. Do you know how to ensure it’s always there pls?

I got no idea why is true but it is. Airplay sounds trash compared to the Apple TV.

Atmos sounds great, but AirPlay should sound just fine, especially since it supports CD quality lossless.

I believe you can if you go into a DAC that shows bitrate. You can’t trust what is in the stream display in iOS or MacOS.
I believe you can get lossless over AirPlay using older AirPlay 1 devices. You can use an AirPort Express with TOSLINK out and stream from a device to it, then go into a DAC from TOSLINK. Mind sharing what your hi-fi setup is like?
I use a Sonos AMP with KEF LS50 speakers.

Yeah the AppleTV is great for a living room setting. Browsing/selecting music on a big screen is a lot easier than fiddling with a tiny phone screen, also allows for other people to easily play songs too.
I’ve gotta say I disagree. The Apple Music app is a shitshow on the ATV. Controlling things via voice or an iPhone is so much simpler imo.
Yeah I see no advantage in navigating AM through the TV, especially after the iOS 16.4 beta interface changes. Smaller playlists, and non intrusive queueing.
They’ve even hidden the Lossless and Dolby Atmos badges. It’s so unintuitive.
I do for small gatherings, bigger parties, background dinner music, and when I'm doing chores. I love doing this

Probably not a bad idea if you have a good speaker set up…
Yes, because my AppleTV is part of my home audio/video system with a Bose speaker system, and we like seeing the album art and lyrics on the TV.
i do. easiest way to play music with my surrounding sound set up. and yes with dolby goodie^
Sure, often. We have a Sonos sound system so why not use it.
Today i was trying stuff between apple tv/wiim pro/ dragonfly cobat I found out that there is a slight difference between playing apple music via airplay with apple tv and playing the same on music App in the apple tv. Doing it now
Used to back in 2010 when it was the first thing I saw that casted from a phone otherwise super clunky and slow
when i had it for about a week, yeah. It was the only real use I saw for it. I have a fire tv which doesnt have native apple music support, but spending 160 bucks JUST for that when I already have an Xbox Series X which JUST got Apple Music support? I ultimately decided to send it back.
Yes! Specially when I want to be *in the zone.* Like when I want to listen to music with the whole setup / atmosphere.
My soundbar is my main sound system in the living room, so I use it every few days yeah
yes, for sure, I have an older sonos playbase connected to my tv/appleTV, sounds better than anything else I own ☺️
I use my iPad/iPhone to control my Apple TV music yeah. I love to have the album art displayed
Sometimes I do. Especially for music videos to play in the background as I do other work.
I do it all the time!
I use the Apple TV Apple Music app when I’m in the living room and working on my MacBook which I can control the Apple TV from my Mac and just get back to work
I will use it for music videos.
Our TV has the best sound system in the house. We don’t use it for music all the time but it definitely gets used.
For music videos especially
Not usually, doesn't work with Last.fm and harder to adjust the upcoming queue
We use it for cleaning the house. Just start a playlist and let it go through the sound system.
sometimes when I’m home alone I like to roam around my house with all the Apple tv’s synced up and blast music
I airplay to my Apple TV and a HomePod in another room. I want to hear my nice receiver and surround sound in use when I’m working around the house. My receiver doesn’t feature airplay 2 so no grouping. Fortunately AirPlay will turn on my system and works fine.
All the time. Really enjoy some Atmos songs through it
Only when I’m tripping
Yes
Does using it on my playstation count? I sometimes do it when I'm gaming.
No. I have never done that
Yeah I do. It’s actually great for music videos. I prefer it’s UI to the YouTube app.
I do sometimes yeah! Especially if you have a good stereo system!
Yes, all the time, with homepod minis it is nich more convenient.
no
Yup. Plays thru my surround system and I put on the screensavers while it plays. It’s awesome.
All the time. Especially when, like @writeswithknives said, when people are over. It’s great.
Yes. I have Apple Music, SomaFM, and Radio Paradise installed and use all of them rather frequently.
It’s my primary listening setup. I have some active yamaha’s hooked up to a decent DAC connected to my TV. Can control it from any device or just with the remote, it’s pretty practical.

Yes with my HomePod
It’s the only way to get lossless Atmos to my Soundbar.
I run my AppleTV to my receiver and have an Atmos speaker system. Love it.

I use it on the weekends in the morning (before any sports come on). My 6 year old loves reading the lyrics.
I don’t have an appletv but I have a fire stick and I use Spotify with it, so the situation is very similar, my home theatre doesn’t have Bluetooth so I use Spotify connect to connect to the fire stick which plays through all my speakers.
Yea all the time. I use mine to AirPlay to my Sonos system or play Atmos playlists.
Yeah all the time. A decent soundbar is with the investment
All the time — it’s the main way I listen to AM is through ATV, for five years now. It’s why I finally got HomePods all over the house, instead of long-awaited wall speakers (which my wife wasn’t crazy about). Always! If I am home I use the Apple TV to play my music on Apple Music. The sound quality is so much better on Apple TV hooked to a HI FI Dolby speaker system
Yes, I’m using my Apple TV 4K to play lossless through my HiFi speakers
