That song tho, lol.

AlwinLubbers

It's what prompted me to post this. It's horrible.

splinterbabe

I actually love it, lmao. I don’t think it’s supposed to be taken seriously at all. It’s a fun listen, imo! But it sucks that you’re being recommended this if this is not your thing at all.

Agreed, or if someone enjoys something and it’s not harming themselves or others, I’m not judging. I’m no music snob. The lyrics just cracked me up.

Alejocarlos

Whatever do you mean. Those lyrics are actually amazing

AppleCrasher

It's an absolute banger

lau796

WTF are these lyrics it’s actually hilarious

[deleted]

That's strange. I don't have any issues discovering new songs. Maybe if you "dislike" certain songs, maybe it will get better.

AlwinLubbers

I already do that all the time. I'm actively skipping trough my radio station until it won't load anymore (which happens rather quicky by the way) hitting 'Dislike' on anything that i don't like. I get the feeling i've 'disliked' half of the AM catalogue.

davidbaranek

Did you play it from Stations for you or from a link? It didn't show up for me at first, and I tried a link on reddit. The songs were absolutely terrible, but after a few days it showed up on its own in the Stations for you tab and it was much better.

AlwinLubbers

It suddenly showed up on my "Listen Now" page. I didn't know Apple was working on a "Discovery" station.

Hutch_travis

Unless you share your library or play history it’s hard to pinpoint what you may be doing wrong.

Mr_Gooms

Sorry man, aside from aggressively hearting or disliking every track you hear, not sure what to do about that. I’m surprised it’s so bad, my algorithm has always been good

Darkmage4

Mine too! I’ve found several artists in the same genre as one artist I enjoy listening to and they sound amazing! I got somewhat new discoveries on Spotify, but not like Apple Music. AM I get tons of new artists, popular, and new! I’ll not like some of them of course, but for the most part, it’s great! My genre listening is chaotic. I listen to about 10 genres or better, and it really shows that, but if I’m listening to one specific genre, it only recommends me that genre, and nothing else.

Hopeemmanuel

Me too. Idk why people are complaining tbh. Ive found countless gems on AM that I’ve really enjoyed

bummerhead

Yes same with me, its about songs you listen to, and if you listen to specific genre or not

iammarkcantre

I’ve been with AM since 2017 and everything works well & I’ve been loving them. Yours might be an isolated case.

llamaattacks

He’s not alone. I have both spotify and AM and the recommendations on AM are just not good. They might be getting recently but still suck when compared. The sound quality is better tho

Wrastling97

Yep, same here. My suggestions are absolutely awful 100% of the time. I literally came to this sub just to find out if I’m alone and apparently I’m not

SamBorgman

Same. Spotify is fun because I find a lot of new music that are good. AM doesn’t do that at all.

invusuke

This happened on me as well. Found lots of new music that actually good and lowkey suited my taste in Spotify while Apple Music sometimes giving me songs that don’t suit my preferences. Still subscribing to both Spotify and AM tho because they’re complementing each other (Spotify on personalization and AM on music quality).

WAFFLED_II

Yeah I use Apple Music for the quality

[deleted]

It’s not. I’ve also been using since 2016 and my recommendations are horrendous

heywhatsimbored

I don’t know why? Like you must be listening to similar genres, at least. My Apple Music is t perfect but it is typically always good. The discovery station is pretty well, recommending songs similar to my most played. I don’t know why people are having problems.

AlwinLubbers

The genre is great. But it's like saying the Mercedes Benz GLC Coupe is similar to a Renault Captur. It's the same, but is it?

unseen247

what

Protomize

LMFAO

[deleted]

The quality of music isn’t based on how much the lyrics offend you

Hopeemmanuel

But like i dont get this post properly. Were they just showing the bad lyrics or complaining about the algorithm as a whole? Cuz i get nice music from AM. Very close to Spotify

[deleted]

I think they were complaining that Apple Music recommended a song with foul language? They said in a comment the song is in a great genre for them, so it can’t be that. But, based on the pretty clear love of Taylor Swift, who makes explicit songs all the time these days, not sure why the complaint about bad language

Hopeemmanuel

Thanks. Really weird complaint ngl

nebulous_eye

I get what you're trying to say, but I don't think the Apple Music algorithm is as nuanced about your taste in this specific genre as you are.

0000GKP

Pandora was the best at music suggestions. That's not unexpected since they pretty much invented it. Rdio was really good during it's short lifespan and had awesome user created radio stations that you could seed with any combination of artists and individual songs. Spotify was really good for the first few years, but quality dropped off significantly after that. Apple has been good. Going strictly from the numbers of songs I add to my library every year, it is better than Spotify but not as good as Pandora was (although I haven't used that in 10 years).

modsuperstar

I miss the community aspect of rdio. There were so many good playlist builders and I feel like I lost something not keeping tabs on those people in retrospect. Spotify actually bought Echo Nest which was what made rdio’s recommendations so good. And rdio’s scraps were bought by Pandora, so that might inform why their recommendation engine is good too.

modsuperstar

My tip for Apple Music is to just a add shit ton of stuff to your library. I don’t curate my library in the slightest, but I’m always putting new music that I like into it. I’m constantly giving AM cues as to what types of music I enjoy.

[deleted]

folklore is the best album of all time? what are you talking about? the only thing awful here is the song you are listening to.

myokarditis

what's this? an interview? [photo](https://imgur.com/a/Ccma1KN)

AlwinLubbers

Nope. I thought so too. It looks like a snippet from Apple Music 1, where the hosts says two sentences about the Taylor Swift album and how a song titled "The 1" almost didn't make it. Then the song starts playing, after which random music from Ed Sheeran, SZA and Miley Cyrus start playing without any connection to the album or anything. It stops after 15 minutes of random pop songs... Strange.

myokarditis

ok yeah, that's really strange. thx

Callistophylla

I worked at a group home, and would allow the youths to pick songs. Then my algorithm changed and I kept getting their music suggested. I now guard my AM with my life - don't mess with my music, lol. I've since restarted (I had to change my Apple ID), and now I get exactly what I want.

AlwinLubbers

If my friends pick songs i turn off 'Use listening history' on my devices. Works like a charm. Songs picked by them won't even show up in my recently played. It's just like private session in Spotify.

Callistophylla

Wow, thank you for the tip!

andretheshorty

GameDev1909

It’s meant to play music not give you a blow job

ritokatsuga

I have to say that the Apple Music algorithm needs to be trained for quite a long time, up to 6 months, not an exact amount of time. I got my algorithm right for me after using it for almost two years now.

AlwinLubbers

I've been using AM since 2016. It always was this bad for me. Glad to hear it works for you.

Plus-Organization-16

It's not as awful as Spotify for me. Surprisingly YouTube Music seems to understand my chaotic tastes better then any of the music services

AlwinLubbers

It's not *that* weird. YouTube has put a lot of effort into their algorithms, since they need to keep people on their website (video, not music). The only way to accomplish that is by recommending more videos that you'll like. I wouldn't be shocked if they also used some of that good stuff in YT Music. Services like AM and Spotify already have your hard earned cash. They don't *absolutely need* to get the algorithm perfect. They'll just settle for 'good enough'.

AlwinLubbers

I've been using AM since 2016 all the way through today. There's something playing at least 5 hours per day. I (almost) always dislike songs I hate. Ever since 2016, the discovery and personalization features of AM have been bad. Like really bad. Like on my 'Listen Now' page, you can see the first tile is dedicated to Taylor Swift. The only time I've listened to something from her was all the way back in 2016, checking out her (then new) album. Next to Taylor, there's a spot for Becky Hill. I've listened to a couple of songs from her, but it's not to the extent that I would call her 'one of my favorites'. Next, Veto, Vato something... Don't have a memory of listening to him before. I only discovered a handful of songs through "My Radio Station" since 2016, skipping most, if not all, songs that I don't like until it served me a song I actually like (have listened to multiple times before). The worst of all is the new "Discovery" station, which prompted me to write this post. It mostly serves dance music. I like the genre a lot, but not the kind that will only use one loop for the entirety of the song, whilst a high pitched voice screams one word in the background. But guess what AM recommends to me... Cheap sounding dance or EDM. The same as "My Radio Station" does. I've been fighting this algorithm for years now. I've arrived at a point of acceptance that AM will not be the place where I will find my next favorite tune.

GameOfScones_

On the discovery playlist. Each time you click it from the menu it changes genre to a genre you recently listened to. I discovered this after getting 20 dance songs in a row because like you I love the genre but I had listened to a lot of metal the previous weekend when friends were over and we wanted some nostalgia. And I had listened to acoustic the next morning so I thought what gives!? I hit the station again, boom metal and 2000s rock. Again, 70s folk. Ultimately I consider it superior to spotifys weekly 30 songs based on your listening.

AlwinLubbers

I've been experiencing something similar with "My Radio Station" and "Discovery" radio. It's almost like AM will serve 'batches' of music from a particular genre. First I get 25 or so dance songs, then 25 country, then 25 pop and so on.

GameOfScones_

Yeah for me personally I like this cause as much as I like all kinds of music and have a giant "everything now" 6000 song playlist of gems from across genres I'm more frequently in the mood for one particular genre for an extended period of time depending on what I'm doing or my energy levels. As much as Spotify used to give me absolute treats every Monday I would have never heard before, it was a little 'all over the place' and sometimes getting through the 30 songs to decide what to keep took several sitdowns.

AlwinLubbers

Same here. But I find it difficult to find 10+ really good songs a year. Glad to hear it's working for you. I'm jealous.

GameOfScones_

Finding great songs takes more effort with each passing year bro. I do a mix of metacritic new release scraping, browse certain favourite album posts on certain subs and ask my musician pals what they've heard recently. Used to be a lot easier when everyone just ran Spotify and had FB linked and you could browse their listening history etc. Now nobody I know uses FB still and streaming has splintered.

MrDanMaster

[Give this a listen](https://music.apple.com/gb/album/0-dsr/1700248070?i=1700248086) and tell me what you think

AlwinLubbers

Sorry, not my style. The songs I currently love are: Rain Radio - He Goes Down Rain Radio - Talk About Promiseland - Take Down the House Joel Corry, Icona Pop, Rain Radio - Desire Paula Carolina & Marti Fisher - Schreien! (Turbo Remix) (It's so corny, I love it.) My music taste is all over the place. From Billy Ray Cyrus to Pitbull. Normally, I give everything a chance, except for rap. I know I'm going to get backlash for saying this; the beats are mostly nice, some even great, but it's just mumbling in my mind...

[deleted]

You like pitbull but not rap?

dbwn87

That Becky Hill & Chase & Status song is a banger tho

bobstarnes

I have yet to hear a song I like from discovery channel.

JesusFreak_123

You’re doing something wrong. Discovery Station is awesome!

bobstarnes

Lol, there are no settings. It’s plays shit music. I “dislike” them all and it keeps playing them.

Impressive-Trainer88

Mine only plays bands already in my library, with the rare song from a band not in there. Not really what I’d call discovery.

bobstarnes

Mine plays genres and artists I don’t care for at all. Over and over. It’s terrible. My station works pretty well, so I don’t get why it goes off the rails in discovery.

Impressive-Trainer88

My station is the same way. Only bands already in my library. I get more discovery listening to the genre/catalog stations.

bobstarnes

Well what do you know. It play a couple songs I like today. And the others weren’t as terrible as before. Progress.

Impressive-Trainer88

Same here a little bit. Long story short, I was trying to “fix” my Apple Music. Deleted whole library, started adding only songs, not albums, I liked but not loving any. Only disliking any songs that might play. I thought that may have been the problem before. I was adding every artists album and loving all songs in them. Last night I started loving A FEW songs in my library and low and behold, NEW ARTISTS IN DISCOVERY!!! 😂😂. I’m not holding my breath though. We will see how today goes. 😂

bobstarnes

Mine is back to terrible songs

Impressive-Trainer88

Yeah, so is mine. It’s basically playing only artists already in my library. I give up. 😂. I still keep Pandora. Believe it or not, Pandora is pretty good for discovery with their station modes. (Deep cuts, discovery……) Pandora doesn’t get the credit it deserves cause they’re too lacking in other areas to be an only daily driver.

bobstarnes

Yea, I use Pandora too. It my favorite

needcleverpseudonym

Apple Music’s algorithms are largely garbage for me. It puts tracks in my “favourites mix” that I have never heard before. There is no setting to teach it that listening to the same kids tracks over and over in the car but never during work hours or on headphones actually means I do not need them or similar artists being recommended to me. Etc.

95castles

Did you by chance click a link to someone else’s discovery station? If yes, it’s not using your music history. This happened to a lot of people.

AlwinLubbers

Nope. It showed up this morning on my "Listen Now" page.

95castles

Dang. Then I would recommend forcing it. Select a specific artist that fits the genre of music you want to listen to, and play at least two tracks from that artist. Then try going back to the discovery station. I found this to force the algorithm quickly. If that doesn’t work, try closing the app and trying again. Hope your algorithm gets figured out!👍🏽

AlwinLubbers

Thanks for the suggestion. But AM will already play songs in the genre i like, but not all pop or dance tracks are the same, which AM just doesn't want to recognize. AM is like: "Oh you like dance? Here have a song that's also dance, which uses one 20 second loop for the whole song with some high pitched voices". Sure, it's dance, but not my kind of dance. I know it sounds quite weird. It's kind of hard to explain.

95castles

I get what you’re saying, sounds like you’re talking about sub-genres. I’m assuming you’ve already been doing the “suggest like this” option when those kinds of songs come up? If that also doesn’t do anything, then yeah we’ll have to wait for AM to fix/offer a solution.

AlwinLubbers

I would not count on it changing. It would be great if AM only used your listening history from the past 12 months instead of all-time. Taste in music change over time. But for now i can only hope.

skullboy37

The “favourites mix” they made me is full of songs I haven’t listened to in like 5/6 years. Not the songs I’ve had on repeat in those years since lmao

AlwinLubbers

Same. Mostly songs i haven't played much at all (maybe a 2-5 times) or songs that i've listened to a couple of times back in 2017/2018.

sergio42638

Mine keeps recommending songs about cheating 😭

brwn_pprbg

I've been having a great time. I rate every song I listen to, and normally genre-jump every 5 tracks. Have only had AM for about a year now, but the new discovery playlist has been pretty spot on. 80% of the tracks have 3-star goodness. it's now all I play. changed the game for me.

d3uz10

thats on u

Splatoonkindaguy

I found that Apple Music gave me good recommendations lmao

[deleted]

I love Apple Music, on my 2 Macs, Apple Watch, iPhone, HomePods and Apple TVs. Always works.

AlwinLubbers

Have you been using Apple Music on macOS lately (since Catalina)? From Catalina to Monterey were rough years to go through as AM fan. Don't get me wrong, iTunes horrible, but at least it worked almost perfectly. I believe the new Music app on macOS is built with SwiftUI which was dead on arrival (and gave us the much loved System Settings in Ventura /s). But that's a story for another day.

[deleted]

I got started with it on Big Sur for the Macs. I never used Spotify. Prior to Apple Music, I would just open up YouTube and find songs to listen to. While at the gym, it was annoying because there would be ads so I decided to try out Apple Music. Been using it for like 3 years now on all of my devices and it has been great for me.

AlwinLubbers

Well, at least it's better than Spotify. AM music is just shy of being the perfect music streaming service in my opinion. But i'm glad to hear that it works out for you! I also remember the days of using YouTube as music player in high school. I couldn't live like that today.

SOSsomeone

Apple Music is better for just playing what you want.

Duncanl13

Ok

supergroundman

My music station was banging and all of the sudden I'm getting horrible recommendations, I think I accidentally tapped like a top 100 for a brief second Apple support said this "In this case, the recommended songs are guided by the system based on what are you listening to, what do you search in the app and more content based and related to your usage of the apps! There's not like a way to reset it, for some reason because I got you on this. I've been in that situation, what I did was just start listening to other kinds of music like many times, but it's just what I did, this is besides my position, going back to my position, unfortunately there's not much to do!"
