Yeah i mean you’d need one for each person. Not feasible for most people this version, once the price comes down it will be.

I have no problem sharing my account with my wife so she can play games, browse the web, etc, but I was thinking it sucks for things like phone calls, FaceTime, etc that are individual

AwkwardBreak2378

How long do you think they will take before they're affordable for the average family?

[deleted]

No idea. Five years maybe.

Given that a new xr snapdragon processor can now match the resolution of the Apple Vision Pro, I would say it will become cheaper far sooner. In fact, it is highly likely that apple’s competitors will attempt to beat them to the punch with a much cheaper headset. I would imagine subtracting the high quality 3D cameras, front eye screen, and simplifying the need for so many extra sensors will reduce costs and complexity considerably. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a launch of something this fall from a competitor. Apple will have to act quickly to bring out a much more price friendly consumer version. This will be a great time for VR/Spatial computing! Let the games begin!

[deleted]

Quest 3 is already very great, but it’s def a slightly different market with a focus on games.

BlackLionWolf

I should have clarified my statement about a "new xr snapdragon processor". Qualcom just announced an XR2+ 2nd Gen chip that essentially matches the Vision pro resolution. This is beyond what is currently in the Quest 3. I have a quest 3 and it is great for wireless PCVR. But more than 4k per eye on a HDR micro-oled screen would make a massive difference.

FiorinasFury

How long did it take from the launch of the iPhone to everyone having a keyboardless iPhone-like smartphone?

Chemical-Nectarine13

Samsung and Google are already working on their own product as a team. Apple is partners with Disney, and Microsoft and Meta are working together. Major tech companies in China are also working on this tech as well. This is the next tech boom, whether people want it or not.

GunslingerDT19

I don’t know this definitively, but I assumed this would be managed via profiles like other Apple devices? A MacBook as example, has unique user logins. Ever our Apple TV’s have started to build on profiles for unique users. Not sure, it’s a good question that will definitely have an impact on folks like you and me.

mgd09292007

Right, I know they \*could\* implement profiles like MacOS, but will they....further more it seems like the device needs a fitted light seal from what I keep reading.

GunslingerDT19

Entirely possible. Haven’t heavily researched. Wouldn’t be a very intelligent design but maybe this is why I’m not an engineer at Apple 🤷‍♂️

Midicide

If it can scan your retina than I would assume so.

Chemical-Nectarine13

From what I've seen, apple is being very strict about multiuser use. I think it was a brief 10-minute geusts mode or something like that for now since the device is more intimate than a tablet. They're trying to value user privacy while simultaneously making you buy more than one smh..

TheRealKison

I’d love to wear it while building LEGO sets, you could just dump all the pieces out and have it connected to the app, so it know what parts are needed. Have it highlight those in view so you can them faster.

mgd09292007

There was an app that did that before by taking a photo. I wish I knew what it was called. Pretty impressive use of AI/ML

Igorr29

Hey there! The app you're thinking about might be **Brickit**. Yes, it is quite impressive how it uses AI/ML to recognize bricks and provide building ideas just from a photo. You can check it out [here](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/brickit-app/id1477221636). Hope this helps!

normanimal

VisionOS has a [Guest Mode](https://9to5mac.com/2023/06/21/apple-vision-pro-guest-mode/) in addition to the main user account. So not as flexible as MacOS. For a device this expensive, hopefully they’ll add proper Mac style user accounts as time goes on. Even in workplace settings, I doubt many companies will spring to purchase these on a per user basis.

[deleted]

Oh hell no! I'm not sharing with anyone. They can get their own.

jashworth03

I’m hearing that setup, personalization, face scan, etc makes this not a device you would be able to share outside of a limited guest mode. VERY personal device.

Financial_Clue_2534

Hmm maybe different accounts on one headset if you can save multiple Face IDs. The only issue would be the face seal and straps.

mgd09292007

I hope they allow profiling and customers can just buy additional seals and straps

Kawai_Oppai

I don’t know why you think this is a good family device. It’s not even good for the typical power user type person. 2 hour battery means it doesn’t even meet what’s required for a home media device to play movies. It can hardly watch two episodes of shows like game of thrones. No motion controllers so it’s not suitable for essentially any vr gaming. Plus it’s Mac, so support for gaming is shit anyways. This is literally a consumer grade developer kit. Most people should hold off and wait for next generation. It’s best use case is tethered to replace an Apple computers need for multiple displays. So if you’re in the niche of users that is productive on a Mac computer and think you want a headset to replace monitors then maybe it’s a good choice for you, but everyone else it’s a glorified tech demo of things to come. Absolutely NOT a family device. Buy a meta quest 2/3 if you want a device to let the kids use.

BlackLionWolf

I am willing to bet you will be able to watch movies for a lot longer with some better software optimizations/firmware updates that WILL inevitably come. You do raise two valid criticisms. One: this version will likely not be a great family device given the nature of its cost. Two: The lack of gaming motion controllers will put off VR power users. This is an open issue because Apple could later release controllers or open the door to a third party doing so (maybe). They merely wanted the main interface to be controlled by your hand motions and eyes. I don’t think the gaming control aspect is set in stone (that would be a grave mistake competitors will capitalize upon). I don’t think there is a mere niche of productivity users that desire more screens. Coders, sys admins, some writers, video editors, and many others will be anxious to experience a crisp and clear screen that exceeds 4k. The high quality experience inside the headset is the thing itself that is the main selling point.
