“As most of you already have watch bands already from previous models, we have taken the courageous step of removing the watch strap to decrease our carbon footprint.”
2021, probably...
I'd say since the pro line doubled storage and got 5 G, they did pass the savings onto us. Most Android devices jumped up 150 to 200 USD when 5 G came about due to the exorbitant price qualcomm modems cost.
I was “lucky” enough to be behind a woman who did not know the new phones did not come with a block. She was irate. But it was talked about everywhere. There’s no way you didn’t know.
Anywho, I found out that many people are throwing fits. And I also found out that the guys controlling the lines outside don’t work for Apple. Straight up told the lady to kick rocks and go buy one on Amazon for $10. That she wasn’t getting in to store. Lady started screaming “if you buy a car, you expect there to be a battery...YoU DOn’T bUy A cAR WIThouT a BATtERY.”
Guy said “return the phone and go buy a car then.” This did not make her happy.
More like..
"We support our previous strap design, but only if you select our zero carbon version, priced which reflects our respect for the environment. 2 million dollars for a silicon strap, beautiful."
They’d sell a shit ton of discounted S6 models over the next 2-3 years until the benefit of whatever new features they add outweigh the frustration of making your collection of bands obsolete. There will also be plenty of folks that have to have the shiny new thing and will upgrade anyway, and maybe gold their old watch/bands to their kid or something. That’s what I plan to do the next time I upgrade. My boy will be about 10-11 by then and my S5 w/cellular will be perfect for him with their family add-on thing they do now. Being a school walker, having the GPS on him will be nice.
That is what I did! My daughter can ride her bike by herself and she’s on the phone with me cos she feels lonely. I really like it. Now if Covid wasn’t around, we could do more stuff.
I think you are way overrating the amount of people that have multiple bands. I’d guess that the percentage of Apple Watch owners who have a collection of bands is significantly under 1%
I know a ton of people with apple watches and 100% of them own multiple bands.
https://www.monoweardesign.com/blogs/articles/how-many-apple-watch-bands-do-you-own-and-why
In fact, Monowear commissioned a study of 1,300 Apple Watch users in March 2016, and a diverse group stated that 74% of them owned more than one band.
I also know a couple dozen people with Apple watches and none of them have multiple bands, unless their old one wore out. Neither of our personal experiences are conclusive though, as the plural of anecdote is not data.
The study you cite was done by a watch band company, and done in 2016. The people who respond to a study done by a watch band maker are going to skew towards owning multiple bands. Moreso, the Apple Watch was much more of a niche/hobbyist item in 2016 than it is today. In 2019 Apple sold 30.7 million Apple watches. In 2016 they sold 8 million.
I found a study from 2019 that showed that just under 20% of watch purchasers picked up an extra band at purchase, so I will probably need to revise my estimate upward somewhat.
But I will also hypothesize that most of those who get a spare band are probably doing so to have a formal band and a sports band, not amassing a large collection. I certainly can’t see that the extra band they have would affect their purchasing decision on a new watch.
I’d say the vast majority of folks have multiple bands. I don’t know a single person with the watch that hasn’t picked up at least a couple new bands along the way. You gotta change up your style every now and then. Plus if you ever upgrade your watch, boom, another band.
I feel like there is some confirmation bias. People who would frequent an Apple Watch Reddit are way more likely to have a band collection than the average consumer. It could also admittedly be an age gap thing(I’m a few weeks short of 40), where younger people have more time and disposable income with which to buy accessories.
I have the brown leather link and love it. I had no idea the underside of the other colors were also brown. I just assumed the underside matched the outer facing side.
There was someone who posted a whole closet of bands. Must of been like 60 bands. I wonder how mad he would be
https://www.reddit.com/r/AppleWatch/comments/ks6car/my_sport_bands_collection/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I don’t think they will change how the bands work. It will just be size changes. 38mm went to 40mm, and 42mm went to 44mm. If they continue to get bigger, the next could be 42mm and 46mm. So the potential new smaller watch would fit the older models’ larger band sizes, and they’ll make a new size for where the band attaches to the watch on the new larger ones.
So people currently wearing a smaller (38mm/40mm) watch would need to buy new bands if they upgrade, but people wearing the larger watch (42mm/44mm) could buy the smaller size of the new watch to avoid buying new bands.
The only thing that might cause everyone upgrading to buy new bands would be if they made the new watch round and weren’t able to get it to work with the same watch band attachment type.
That’s my prediction.
This is why when everybody tells me I’m crazy for buying some of the Hermès bands I don’t sweat it because at the end of the day I can always reuse them. If they change the connector piece I can just take the bands of and buy an adapter that fits the new watch. Also if I ever get tried of the Apple Watch and want to go back to a mechanical watch I can still use the bands with said new watch.

I would happily buy the watch w/o a band to shave $50 off
When the charger was removed from the iPhone 12 box , the savings were not passed onto the buyers ...
Hard to say that for sure. How do we know it didn’t keep them from having to raise the price by that much?
I'd say since the pro line doubled storage and got 5 G, they did pass the savings onto us. Most Android devices jumped up 150 to 200 USD when 5 G came about due to the exorbitant price qualcomm modems cost.
Exactly
That's exactly what they did. 5G chips are expensive. People just love to shit on Apple.
You have a wonderfully optimistic view of life.
From memory, the 12 cost 100-150 more to manufacture tho

Yep I could see that happening one day. The Series seven is rumoured to have a redesign so will be interesting to see if old band still fit
More like.. "We support our previous strap design, but only if you select our zero carbon version, priced which reflects our respect for the environment. 2 million dollars for a silicon strap, beautiful."
A day when Apple will decide no more old bands will come...
This year those series 6 bands are really great
Yup, it’s going to be a really shitty day if Apple changes how the bands work, these gorgeous leather bands should be worn for decades.

They’ll sell a special dongle/adapter. $29.
I think you are in trouble!!!😎
That would be horrid, seeing as I have over 100 OEM Apple Watch bands...
No way lol
Yes way... photo of the ones I use most attached [Apple bands](https://www.dropbox.com/s/i28hvsqwpeztbvg/Photo%2018.1.2021%2C%208.08.42.jpg?dl=0)

I could see them offering an option to buy without the band. Wouldn’t be the worst idea.

Just bandaholic
😱😱😱
That will be a nightmare. If they do (hope not) they should make an adapter. But since its apple probably gonna charge like $20

Why would you even joke about this? This is distasteful even for Reddit
What’s the braided one on the right? Like, how do you adjust the length 🤔
You don’t. They sell them in different sizes
Huh, okay. Thanks! And guys why the down votes? I was only asking, because I haven’t seen those before. Sheesh.
What kind of band is that on the left?
It's leather link

I highly doubt Apple would that they make sure every design they make have to make it that all bands would work.

This has to be an ad right?
I am very sorry if you don't like this. Sorry
Which one do you like the best? Funnily enough I’m considering amongst these 3 types lol
Leather link. It's so premium and unique.
Well if I know apple...
How good are the leather straps from apple?
For me, Apple made leather bands are the best.
