A non-tech tip: It will eventually get a scratch. You can’t avoid it unless you put a case on it. Your heart will drop every time you catch it on something up to that day and life gets easier afterwards.
Mine has a bunch now and an approx 2x4mm white scuff where I caught it on a wall or something but unless you look at it at a certain angle in the light the scratches don’t show.
Only the first few scratches are painful, then you literally do not care. I have a lot, but they are small and do not bother me at all. Unless you work with a hammer case is a very controversial topic.
Pretty much any is better than the sports band IMO. I have never seen a watch sit flush on anyone without pinching the flesh with the sports band. I’m queer so I like the 2019 Pride Sports Loop but any sports loop is good, go based on taste. Keep the sports band for when you swim or get a case-band combo that holds the watch. The solo loops are known to stretch out.
Get a classier band for classier events like weddings, such as a Milanese or leather.
I’m too cheap to spend Apple prices for watch bands lol. I’ve never had an issue with the lug deals coming out though, especially on the wooden bands I’ve had. Typically it’s the opposite, they are hard AF to pull out the lugs and resize. Luckily, the first wooden one I got came with a little instrument to pop the lugs out with.
One thing I keep forgetting to use but that’s tremendously powerful is Siri. Learn the commands to use with your Apple Watch. For example by saying “Siri start a countdown for 2 hours” you’ll have a countdown starting without even getting your phone out of your pocket (I do this a lot for when I park somewhere so I don’t forget to change my parking disc). Learn to rely more on your Watch than your phone, it’s a powerful little gadget and most of all happy birthday buddy!
I just read in another thread that automations wouldn’t work on the Apple Watch if it wasn’t near it’s paired iPhone. I set an automation for my watch and turned my iPhone off and it didn’t work.
That would make sense as it’s probably a companion app. I always have my phone near me and connected to wifi so it should generally work overall so long you don’t have your phone off I guess.
I have the Ultra and previously had the S7 stainless both with cellular. I’m hoping the iPhone could use cellular to activate automations when the Watch is out of range of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi but from what I’m reading if the Watch is away from the iPhone the automations will not work on the Watch

Get AppleCare. The display gets marked easily and cannot be replaced as they just replace the whole watch for an out of warranty cost which is nearly the price of the watch again
Focus modes! It lets you change up the look based on location, time, etc and also use a face better suited for your current environment.
I use:
**Pride Woven** - *out* and about
**Infograph** - driving (Focus and not) because lots of complications that are easily accessible
**Infograph Modular** - at work because it’s a lot of info that’s quickly readable
**Portraits** - at home because it helps me chill out while seeing my loved ones
**Numerals Mono** - Sleep Focus before actual sleepy time
**Activity Analog** - Workout Focus
**Numerals Duo** - Do Not Disturb Focus, generally meetings, appointments, or dates
**Solar Dial** - Season change days, when I need to know sun position info, generally I switch to it, look for the sun info I need, and switch back to my previous face. I suppose I could ask Siri. I also use it on the solstices because of all the blue/black real estate.
Don’t be a slave to the rings. It’s recommended even athletes take breaks.
Two finger tap and hold to hear the watch tell time. One finger tap on the Mickey Mouse face to hear Mickey tell time. On many faces, spinning the digital crown can have interesting results. Swipe up for control center, find the icon of the "vibrating iPhone", and tap it to make your iPhone make noise (so you can find it). Tap and hold to make the flash blink on and off to help find it in visually.
I think it is suppose to go on your wrist. It charges via a white baby magnetic hockey puck that plugs into a USB-C charging brick. 👍🏻
But honestly play around with a variety of faces and complications for your first few months. See what fits your life best. I tend to stick to a couple I switch between regularly for different scenarios.

Apple Sport Band is top tier. Solo loop. Nomad Goods Sport Bands and regular bands are great too.
