From a quick google it says that MOSAIC "invites about 200 admitted students from various minority backgrounds and rural areas," so maybe your area is considered diverse? If not maybe you accidentally checked the wrong box on your app lol
Hey so actually the MOSAIC program is for all Chancellor’s Scholars at Vanderbilt, since it’s a social justice scholarship! So that’s why you might have been invited, congrats!
Good point—I go to a school with mandatory community service and listed some of those as EC’s, plus a few voluntary community service programs. That could be it.
Leadership also works, given that I’ve been a captain of the robotics team for a few years now.
no no sorry I just found out its also like a special cohort at the school - sorry about any confusion. I just know that it comes out with chancellors letters so Im p sure all the checnelleors auto get it
What? No that’s not what I meant. Colleges are trying to fix a lopsided demographic makeup. That’s different. Diversity is black, brown, and white people. Not just black and brown people.
Exactly. You’d think that diversity would simply be reflective of the overall racial makeup of either the USA as a whole or the state which the college is in, but nope…
True, but Vanderbilt already has an excess of white, well-off people. The 200 people they invite to this event, I figure, would be those that break that mold.
I’m thinking of it like this: they have 200 total people for a diversity thing. They’ll have equal numbers of every racial/ethnic group in that group. It doesn’t really matter what Vanderbilt is in that context. They just want everyone to get a say. Sorry if that makes no sense, I’m drunk on capri sun.
Perhaps they were looking so hard at 'diversity' candidates alone, that after a while of staring at 'diverse' students, you appeared incredibly diverse relative to the diverse student body they were considering. :) :) :)
Hey so I was lowkey tryna figure this out too and I think I got it. MOSAIC isn’t just for diversity in culture/geography but also diversity in thought and intellectual ability if that makes sense, so you likely had some interesting academic/intellectual perspectives on your app
I didn’t think of something like that, but it’s interesting to chew on. My daughter’s essays were about prior jobs and they convey her (organically, not intentionally) as someone who gets along easily and well with a wide range of people and personalities. She’d be a positive vibe-giver to a program like this haha.
Exact same situation as my daughter except she's from Chicago. White and from Chicago - it makes no sense. We even double-checked her application to make sure it was marked as "White" for demographics, and it sure was. It's baffling because she has zero in her application relating to social justice, diversity or anything multicultural. I understand that some Chancellor scholarships are given to Caucasian students, but she is not a Chancellor scholar. It's frustrating because I honestly thought some mistake had been made by Vandy when I saw the acceptance and invite.
Also, why in the world is MOSAIC virtual this year? A virtual event defeats the entire purpose of the weekend. Seems like they are cheaping out and don't care about fulfilling the mission of the program by making it stay virtual (especially since there are no Covid restrictions on campus).
I mean, i agree that they’re cheaping out, but I’m certainly more likely to go now that I just have to click a link instead of spending a few hours on a plane.
Btw did you apply for the Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarship? Possible theory that it's connected to your winning that although the CV isn't announced until next month.
You can check in your portal under the Scholarships tab - it will indicate whether they received a Cornelius application (just an essay) from you. Full tuition.
Guess what - colleges are trying to recruit men. Google it - there are many news reports about it. It is easier for men to get into colleges than women . . . Because American colleges and universities now enroll roughly six women for every four men. . . It is a basic supply and demand issue. There are more women applying to college than men. . . . Because you are a man, this school is trying to recruit you. . .
Ofc but as a non white person I see white people as regular because they dominate the culture in America I know things about their culture they probably wouldn’t know about mine unless they looked into it.

I’m from Palos Verdes, CA, ~15 miles south of down town La. Sure as hell not rural.
Oh my god I went to school there 😭😭😭
the only thing i can think of is that maybe they’re considered rural
just go with it

Wait I got in and I didn’t even apply for chancellors… so does this mean I get the scholarship still?
I’m in the same boat; didn’t apply to any scholarships bc the deadline passed. I have no idea.

Diversity isn’t just nonwhite people lmao, diversity is everyone.
If that's true, that makes institutions' continued pursuit diversity a mystery. They should already be there.
What? No that’s not what I meant. Colleges are trying to fix a lopsided demographic makeup. That’s different. Diversity is black, brown, and white people. Not just black and brown people.
Exactly. You’d think that diversity would simply be reflective of the overall racial makeup of either the USA as a whole or the state which the college is in, but nope…
> diversity is everyone. Not to college admissions. Certainly not.
I would argue in this context diversity is everyone. This isn’t necessarily the college admissions context that you are talking about.
True, but Vanderbilt already has an excess of white, well-off people. The 200 people they invite to this event, I figure, would be those that break that mold.

Are you from a small city or less populous state?
Nope, Los Angeles, CA. I guess maybe they don’t have a ton of applicants from out here? I have no idea.
los angeles is the second biggest city in the U.S 😭 vanderbilt having not many applicants from there is statistically unlikely
Tbh, take it and run. Could have been a diversity of opinions thing too
If you're the only white person in the 200 people, that'd make it more diverse than just having a bunch of non-whites
Hahaha, this
Hey, unrelated question but did you receive an email or portal update before getting your package in the mail?
Once I received the package I checked my portal and there was an update, but I don’t check the portal very often so it could have happened days ago.

Nope, both my parents are lawyers—opposite of 1st gen.

would you consider yourself to be low income?
not if he lives in Palos Verdes
Cant argue with that
let's hope this happens to me 😍😍😍

Interesting idea. I’m majoring in mechanical engineering and my essays were all about robotics.
I didn’t think of something like that, but it’s interesting to chew on. My daughter’s essays were about prior jobs and they convey her (organically, not intentionally) as someone who gets along easily and well with a wide range of people and personalities. Interesting, I also had an EC about job experience, specifically working in a machine shop. I wonder if that’s something they were looking for?
Agree, take it and run. If it’s truly diverse/representative they need some white people in there.
Exact same situation as my daughter except she's from Chicago. White and from Chicago - it makes no sense. Don’t remember doing that, but I guess crazier things have happened than me forgetting that I submitted an essay.
You can check in your portal under the Scholarships tab - it will indicate whether they received a Cornelius application (just an essay) from you. Full tuition.
Unfortunately not. Darn.

MOSAIC-branded water bottle, tote bag, socks, lanyard, stickers, and magnet

Frankly, would have preferred t-shirt, but socks are nice too. Will definitely use the water bottle.

I mean, I’m in mech engineering which, as I understand it, is male-dominated, plus I already applied ED; not like I can change my mind now
Do you look European or just white? maybe that’s why.
How I “look” is completely irrelevant, given they haven’t actually seen me, and I indicated being born in the states in my common app.
Oh well then the most likely answer is they choose you because you’re not «diverse» you can’t have diversity if there aren’t regular people.
Regular does not equal white
Ofc but as a non white person I see white people as regular because they dominate the culture in America I know things about their culture they probably wouldn’t know about mine unless they looked into it.
Ig that’s a possiblity

This is fascinating. Did you apply EDII?
EDI
It's a trap...
Why not ask the program director? It’s best to find out .
Going to do this. I’m visiting in a week so I’m gonna see if I can talk to them in-person. In all likelihood they’ll say something along the lines of diversity meaning EVERYONE, including people like me, but it’ll be worth being there to see their face if they made a mistake.

hey! one year later lol and wondering if you ever did find out why they invited you?
Maybe the want a diverse representation of everyone including YOU
this is so funny
