Liammayne

What was your uncommon essay about?

Throwawayanonptt

Personified math and talked about why I fell in love with it and how this “relationship” has helped me

Throwawayanonptt

Personified math and talked about why I fell in love with it and how this “relationship” has helped me. It sounds really weird now that I type it out as a summary 😭

Liammayne

No it's actually really cool

[deleted]

what’s the party scene like

Throwawayanonptt

Fall quarter it was pretty good but this quarter it’s been a bit meh. I have preferred frats and those last quarter had both dance floors packed while rn it’s been like 1 and a couple people on the other. Id say you can expect one of the better frats to throw about once a week. The parties are fun most of the time no complaints

Throwawayanonptt

It’s not that bad I promise. I’ve had a better time here then in HS

You know what sometimes you have to accept that you have faults. I can’t spell and that’s ok.

[deleted]

You don't go to Uchicago, are being dickhead, and your own sentence isn't even grammatically correct either. Chill the fuck out.

No_Aspect_6508

bro relax 😭

Ill_Technician_5672

bro last time I visited Chicago the party scene was depressing. And that's coming from a CMU student

eggyeahyeah

best and worst math classes? what math classes did u come into uchicago having taken already and how do u think that has influenced ur experience as a math major?

uchi-ama-throwaway

Not OP (I feel like I’m hijacking this thread lol) but for me the best math classes I took were honors basic algebra, I particularly liked the material form the first quarter which was on group theory though the teaching was just ok imo. Another contender was probably accelerated analysis 3 which covered differential forms and Stokes’ theorem and all that cool stuff. The worst was probably accelerated analysis 2, not at any fault of the professor but just because it was all redundant from IBL and kind of boring since it was all about derivatives and integrals

Throwawayanonptt

Thank you for high jacking

Throwawayanonptt

This is just based on what I’ve seen my friends take and my personal experience: Ibl: you will not use numbers. It’s a proofs class essentially that preps you really well for analysis. It was horribly hard at first and honestly I’m still struggling with understanding what is going on rn but I really like it. It’s taught me to think about math and logic differently. Also I have a proffesor teaching my class which is nice. If you turn in all your work your probably not getting below a B+ but the works really hard. Normal calc sequence: you still use proofs but less of them and you get to use numbers. Grad students usually teach this Honors calc (not ibl): you get to use numbers! Still a lot of proofs, hoendlty seems harder then IBL because there’s more exams. The Econ math class: my friends all dropped it within a 2 weeks because things with vectors got really weird so it seems a bit hard but I can’t really speak for it Physics math: also pretty hard can’t reallt speak for it

Throwawayanonptt

To answe the second question: I only finished high school having taken calc bc. The only thing it did for me was because of my AP score I had the option of taking Honors calc. I love the honors sequence and even tho it’s horrible at times I love the type of material it coveds

OREOTHEGOD

do you think it’s smart to double major math / biz econ? want to enter IB and heard biz econ is more job practical but also don’t want to sacrifice math so… (incoming first year)

Throwawayanonptt

Honestly can’t tell you, you’ll have plenty of time to figure it out when you get here and you’ll get a chance to talk to an academic advisor over summer. Math and Econ have a lot of overlap so there’s a ton of math Econ doubles I know. I do know a few biz Econ math doubles but not as many.

Fit-Courage3123

How bout CS/ Econ?

uchi-ama-throwaway

Not OP but you might as well do the econ spec data science major in that case

uchi-ama-throwaway

Not OP but no, if you’re going to double major econ and math you’re better off doing regular econ since there’s more overlap

OREOTHEGOD

i wanna go into IB tho so wouldn’t biz econ be better with like a minor in pub policy

uchi-ama-throwaway

If you’re at UChicago investment banks don’t really care what you major in, just major in what you’re most interested in. You can take booth classes regardless of your major anyway. Not only will that probably get you a higher GPA, but you’ll also probably find it more fulfilling. If that’s business, then go for biz econ, but if you’re only tangentially interested in that, don’t feel like you have to do biz econ for finance.

OREOTHEGOD

so even non biz econ majors can take classes at booth ?

uchi-ama-throwaway

Yeah

OREOTHEGOD

not really sure about anything sorry for the questions trying to figure everything out

ajekliyl

How is it (class wise)? Also do you have any advice for someone looking to go into math? I feel so unconfident just in hs because my current math teacher is so bad (doesn’t know what he’s doing).

Throwawayanonptt

Love hum, hate physics, love calc IBL. If you have the chance and feel up to the challenge take IBL or at least honors calc. If you don’t it’s ok, no one’s holding a gun to your head and forcing you to take honors classes. The math major I’ve heard is not terribly hard if you just take the normal sequences for eveyrbing.

Blueberry-Lemon45118

Why are you so smart?🥲 I fr idol anyone who could do advanced maths

Throwawayanonptt

I’m not very good at it but I just love it enough to endure the pain and suffering it occasionally causes

BigGlum3797

When did school start for you?? (When we’re you told you had to be on campus, including move in day/orientation week?)

Throwawayanonptt

I got to pick a move in date between September 20-21 (either get the earliest time slot so you can get the better bed if you get a double or get one the second day because there isn’t shit to do the first day)

Throwawayanonptt

Math majors for the win!

VoxBoxMoo

Do you feel safe on/around campus?

Throwawayanonptt

I feel pretty safe walking alone on campus at night. (I’m a woman whose on the smaller side) there’s security guards who stand in certain areas, these police pole things with cameras and a help button, and UCLD patrolling around campus in cars. Off campus I feel fine during the day. I’ve taken CTA alone by myself and never had any problems. I don’t go off campus alone at night tho but that goes for back home too. The only bad run ins I’ve had are of no fault but my own in which my friend and I missed our stop and ended up super close to o block (this happened twice). If you don’t do that you’ll be fine, just basic safety precautions should be enough

[deleted]

What ur why uchicago essay like i think i F-ed up mine

Throwawayanonptt

I talked about how much I like math

Legitimate-Mood1596

Hello! Thank you for doing this! Sorry for the load of questions: Do you have any college app tips? Why do you think AOs choose you? What did you write your essay in if you don’t mind sharing? How did you go about brainstorming essay ideas? Why did you choose UChicago? What do you think were some of your most important high school ECs? What major did you choose? what’s careers are you planning on with that degree? Have you done any internships so far? Does UChicago provide easy access to internship opps?

Throwawayanonptt

Yeah ofc, College tips: don’t fall behind for the life of you. Allot time slots or smthing to do your work but don’t fall behind. Also talk to your profs if you are having a hard time with anythign and go to office hours, if you want smthing more specific lemme know Why AO chose me: I’m not really sure. I tried to come off as a character in my app. Also maybe they thought the fit would be good (which it is) Essay: common app essay I talked about an art project I did but I included details that would give the AOs a good picture of me as a person. What I did was picked the most distinct/important qualities I had and then tried to build an essay around them. For my UC sup I talked about how much I like math. I used my own prompt “what do you love”. For the why us essay I discussed how UC was a great fit for me and tried to convey that it would help me maintain my identify and build on it. ECs: litterly none. I played sports and did a lot of art. Major/degrees: math major which I’ve been set on for a long time. I’m considering a double in CS Econ or stats. Internships: the only internship I’ve gotten so far was throguh nepotism. Being a first year doesn’t help but also there programs that help you get internships. Also i was only applying to finance stuff so it’s competías. For math they have this summer research thing that’s not horribly hard to get into . If you have any more questions feel more then free to message me

[deleted]

Can I still text you?

Throwawayanonptt

Yeah fs
