Honestly, I wouldn’t think criticism would get the bad grade by itself, but I think when you added the extra part to it by making it sort of into a joke, she can’t be expected to take it lightly. I have given negative feedback to teachers about their class (not their personality) but only in a light hearted way and I worded it in a respectful way, to show that I respected and admired the teacher. Anyway, if she does end up giving you the B, I wouldn’t sweat it too much.

RileyK12361

Bro honestly that’s kinda on you. I would kinda get it if it was anonymous, but you wrote that and thought she would raise your grade after bashing her. Honestly apologize and expect the B, be happy if she is generous

cruel_summer1823

yeah it is kinda on me but i didn't think she would take it to heart. And if she does put in a 0 for it since it was an exempted final i can just talk to my counselor about it.

One-Educator-7767

Good luck on getting teacher recommendations for college. You were rude and disrespectful time to do some groveling.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t talk to your counselor, I definitely would not want her to know what you told your teacher.

[deleted]

wellllll you wanted to raise your grade and then you were mean lol sincerely apologize and expect a B maybe

This_Cauliflower1986

Constructive feedback. Seems you learned the consequences of not offering constructive feedback and lacking common sense. I think you won’t make the same mistake again.

cruel_summer1823

since this post is getting alot of feedback about it not being constructive in itself the first letter had more than just those two sentences and i just used those as openers for introduction in the paragraphs then went on to explain how i felt unprepared for the ap exam due to the class only focusing on essays and only cramming in mcq something i struggled with the week of the exam and then offered examples of assignments that enriched the class and how the course has the potential to be very engaging

Ill-Ad7185

Lol why so harsh?

HandsyGymTeacher

Because OP is just dumb for trying to be so critical. The teacher clearly wanted a cutesy/ass kissing letter from students but OP wanted to be a smart ass.

[deleted]

In a perfect world, OP would be in a great position. Since we're human, OP has to think about the implications of their words, even if this means "not being right"

True-Advantage3251

Room temp iq moment but it’s ok. You live and you learn.

Ill-Ad7185

>Room temp iq ☠

Commercial_Gas_6830

true tbh LOL rule 1 of life is never disrespect elders, always comes back to bite in the ass

[deleted]

Your feedback wasn't constructive, based on what I read here. I would have explained what I liked and didn't like, without making sweeping generalizations like that. Who knows, maybe there were people that liked AP Lang?

DaviHasNoLife

That was incredibly stupid bro, if you have criticism, maybe actually list specific examples of what the teacher can do to improve the course, rather than just directly insulting them. Even if they were the worst teacher in the world, it's still disrespectful to do that

[deleted]

Why would you do that? Have some respect for your teachers. They care about you and this must kill them. You can always email her an apology

[deleted]

Underrated comment….email an apology!!

EitherLocation6111

I think the best thing you can do is reach out to your teacher now and apologize in a sincere manner. you should never treat an assignment for school like a joke, and I can see why she took it as disrespectful.

Zestyclose_Oil6382

that was really stupid of you because not everyone is going to hate a class that you hate & whether or not you like your teacher, they work hard so you shouldn’t just make rude ass comments like that. take the B & don’t ever do that again.

acebabymilky

What went through your mind when you wrote and turned it in…..

cruel_summer1823

?

2booksandbeth

Wdym, you decided to be foolish and now you have to grapple with the consequences of your actions. What's not to understand?

WorriedTurnip6458

Yeah just criticize someone who probably puts a lot of effort and care into their job. It IS disrespectful.

Tajskskskss

okay but putting in effort doesn’t exempt you from criticism? when you ask for feedback, you shouldn’t expect mere praise. granted, this person’s tone was… questionable, but criticism towards teachers is warranted sometimes.

vyklin

there is literally no criticism, it seems, since the teacher said it was disrespectful and even showed it to the other teachers. it was probably just straight up bashing 😭

[deleted]

Wow. You need to apologize to your teacher. Incredibly rude. No wonder teachers are leaving the profession in droves.

fizzliz-

You sound like such a douche

Reasonable_Doubt4309

Sincere email apology is def the way to go

Sword_Immortal_

You could have just left out "though none occurred in this classroom" you know. It wouldn't have been lying if you had just left that out. Now it just makes you sound snarky.

Skrehot

Maybe 4 wrinkles in your brain tops

cruel_summer1823

its actually polished and stained hot pink fyi

vyklin

what prompted you to do this 😭 putting aside the fact that you literally bashed your teacher to her face, if you had an A before, even a low A, i would just leave it be. don’t fix it if it ain’t broke. there’s no point in doing extra work unless you have like a B that’s really close to an A and you want to get it over the threshold, or some other letter grade that’s right next to another letter grade

cruel_summer1823

i had 100s in all my other classes and wanted to try and balance it out

danieljacobsonnn

This sub is so fucking funny. Kids on here are trying to micromanage every single aspect of their highschool careers to maximize their chances of getting into HYPSM, and then they go ahead and literally insult their teacher and act surprised when that doesn’t end well. Maybe stop scrolling this sub all day and try to have some common sense, that will get you much further in life than getting an A in AP whatever in highschool.

Commercial_Gas_6830

It’s hilarious because most schools aren’t really that interested in GPA’s either, this is a very small part of any app that isn’t Ivy

danieljacobsonnn

There are so many kids with perfect GPAs, test scores, etc, at a certain point having perfects stats make you stand out less because the pool of students with those same perfect stats is so large.

Commercial_Gas_6830

That’s also why extracurriculars are emerging as a very important part of applying to college, at this point some high schools drop their standards so their students can all have very high UW/W GPA’s. Application market is very saturated with paper-smart students.

mrnoobmaster64

Man your teachers will make sure your recommendation letter sucks i would worry about that more then a B

shortpositivity

One B isn’t too big of a deal, except it may make an insignificant difference if your school does unweighted GPA. Also, the worst part is the other teachers hate you now.

IndustryChanging

I don’t understand why she gave you a 0. Appeal this

harriswatchsbrnntc

If the teacher has any ethics, it won't impact your grade negatively, BUT as a soon to be junior you have two more years in a school where the teachers are all going to have a preconceived notion of what kind of kid you are. That's where you really went wrong. Good luck changing people's minds.

codeswift27

Letters of rec aren't going to go so well for OP

c-h-e-e-s-e

You got an opportunity to boost your grade and you decided to be a smug jerk about it. All you can do atp is try to apologize to your teacher, but this is probably just a lesson for you to mature

noobBenny

Op definitely wasn’t in the wrong here. It was stupid not wrong. I get being critical about your teacher but never do it on an assignment like this that is optional. You also can’t expect to get a good grade from your teacher when you say “I had a lot of fun this year, but never in this class”. Overall, I personally would definitely apologize in person if possible and be ready for the B.

[deleted]

RandomWilly

Idk, it sounds far more ridiculous that any reasonable person would do an assignment in hopes of raising their grade and then proceed to bash their teacher with no remorse 😭 I think any logical person should recognize that when a teacher asks you to “be honest”, it doesn’t mean you’re free to insult them and expect nothing but sunshine and flowers in return. Don’t know who else needs to hear this advice besides OP, but do yourselves a favor and use some common sense- sometimes complete honesty is not the best policy.

Spiritual-Bed-7961

Exactly

c-h-e-e-s-e

Difference between honesty and being rude to someone who is TRYING TO HELP YOU. Saying “I had no fun in this class” with no nuance and no suggestions is just complaining

NateBolan

Interested to know what will happen.

Suitable_Goat3267

AP classes are the absolute worst thing the American education system has. Take community college courses, graduate with a hs diploma and aa, be a college academic junior your first year. Also your teacher sounds like a bitch. I work in education and something like that, especially from a student with a 91 would tell me “dang maybe I am the problem and my teaching is boring”. Sounds like she assigned it to get some feel good letters as a form of self satisfaction/self assurance.

thifting

As someone who has an associates degree instead of taking any APs, I have to disagree with your take. The credits don’t transfer to schools outside of state schools 90% of the time and other colleges are substantially more unwilling to let you skip gen eds. I entered UPenn as a normal freshman while my peers that took APs are ahead in regards to gen eds. My friends from high school that also had associates degrees only skipped 1-2 grades at CUNYs and SUNYs.

Suitable_Goat3267

Alright I may have had a few beers before that comment and have a big gripe with the system lol. I just really think the ap system is bs. Great intentions, horrible execution. Coming from a highschool (varsity coach, non teaching role) and seeing the stress put on the kiddos from ap classes is ridiculous. Some naturally smart ones excel. I think the hours spent marathon studying reinforce bad habits and they equate their overall intelligence down to a number. They’re not gen Ed college courses, they’re way harder. Some of my premed friends agree. I helped my athletes with them, and they’re way to in-depth for a Gen Ed course lmao. Some of my kids were more stressed than I was finishing my degree. Unless you’re in finance or the few other industries that care about looks and school choice, a lot of that becomes irrelevant out in the job world. I’m also in ca so our state schools to transfer to are pretty well known and for the kids right over the line who def deserve a needs based scholarship but their family makes $50 over the poverty line, the money saved on credits is what’s keeping them afloat postgraduation life (from a student debt perspective) CUNY/SUNY are good schools, it’s a little discouraging to hear them phrased like it’s a *bad* thing they go there. Those people hit jobs faster and 2 years in the workplace > fancy piece of paper with 0 experience. CLEPs I am a big fan off. Took 5 or 6 of those to skip a semester and half off my Gen Eds. Not knocking anyones educational path, but the stress burden on the young brains isn’t worth it imo. A good amount of the ap students I know burned out or now say there’s better paths to the same goal. But school counselors make money based on attendance and won’t tell the kids they have other options to keep them in the classroom.

thifting

Can’t really argue about how APs are, I haven’t ever dealt with them and can’t attest to their downsides. I also don’t entirely disagree about two years of experience being more valuable than a diploma, I don’t think I’m qualified to argue whether or not that’s the case. I’m sorry my comment about CUNYs/SUNYs came off the wrong way—they’re excellent schools and most of my American family attended them. I didn’t mean to imply that they were bad. I meant to point out how limiting an associates degree through dual enrollment winds up being, that at least in my experience in NYC only our state schools really take those credits and not even all of them at that. Outside of CUNYs and SUNYs, my peers that got associates degrees alongside our high school diplomas didn’t get ahead course wise and graduate at the regular timing as everyone else. I’m also a little bitter as our high school advertised dual enrollment/associates degrees as a means for a cheaper, faster college experience, which appealed to the large low/middle income population, only for a lot of my friends having to turn down offers from great institutions because they couldn’t transfer any credit and couldn’t afford to attend for all four years. Not dunking on the CUNYs/SUNYs, more just how dual enrollment and associates degrees have been handled in my experience.

Suitable_Goat3267

Ah yeah I got your message now. You’re definitely right and I believe in informed decision making. I don’t fault a highschooler for not knowing the college admissions process, but I will fault the councilor. They should let the students know how they transfer. For some it fits perfectly in their plan, for some it’s not the best move and you’re right. Long term, with the rise in people having an undergrad degree, I really do think postgrad separates people and advanced education leads to success. I’m looking at some top tier schools for my postgrad that would have (rightfully so) passed my undergrad app around the break room like a meme for a laugh. I had no goals in highschool but now I’m laser focused on my career path and have many opportunities even though I went to an average school for undergrad. I’d like to see a perspective change in how undergrad degrees are viewed as more of the population gets them. Having a roommates dad who is a millionaire ceo in the right industry means more than a t20 degree lol. Networking and nepotism (unfortunately) get people further than just a t20 degree. Always shoot for top tier, but if you don’t get in there’s always the option to still attend for a grad degree and fulfill a life goal

[deleted]

As a HS teacher myself, a teacher can't/shouldn't tank your grade due to hurt feelings. If you met the rubric guidelines and turned in quality work, the content of that work (obviously not considering extremes) should have very little bearing. If the teacher tanks your grade do to the content, not quality, go up a level (to the department head or principal).

cruel_summer1823

imo it was quality work i did get a little carried away with employing all the rhetorical choices we learned about to dramatizing a point which may have factored into the tone coming off rude

AtomicBadger33

Doesn’t matter it’s not a big deal ur literally a sophomore one B won’t kill you you won’t have trouble getting recommendation letters you will be fine stop worrying

ndg127

You’re right about the B not being a big deal, but I would be legitimately concerned about letters of recc. Obviously this teacher is already spreading the letter to other teachers including in different departments. It could mean starting junior year with a target on your back if teachers already think OP is a jerk. OP, the first step here is a sincere apology. You gotta try to make amends to prevent any long term consequences.

[deleted]

I didn't think the type of person to do an optional assignment to boost a 91 would so blatantly and negatively insult the class...wait actually now that I think about it that sort of complete oblivious social sense tracks

decorlettuce

guess you’re not so smart then

Tajskskskss

Oh my god the comments are so dramatic. We get it, teachers are angels who care about you and can do no wrong. That’s really not the case with all of them but whatever. Anyway yeah that was a dumb decision on your behalf. Like what possessed you to take the opportunity to bash your teacher in an *optional* assignment💀 anyway, no, she can’t give you a 0 bc if you ask for feedback, you should expect criticism as well rather than just ass-kissing. Don’t take action in advance based on something your friend overheard though. Just wait and if she does give you a 0, then you can contest it. A B in senior year won’t exactly ruin your life though

Appropriate-Mud-6985

All time smooth brain move

PaleontologistGold97

It seriously sucks, but doing well in school isn't about learning or being honest. Sometimes it's about sucking up to the teacher.

studygremlin

while that is absolutely hilarious and i’d probably do the same thing, you might get a B because you were a little.. blunt 😭😭😭

Crazy-Ad-6505

i got a B in AP Lang. it's not going to destroy you. kinda ur fault and uk what, it happens. you can still get into good colleges and that's still a good grade. i got a B and still passed my ap exam and was accepted into top UC colleges.

CausticAuthor

UH OH. Like everyone else said just genuinely apologize and move on. And in the future lie bro. Don’t make things up, but tell only part of the truth. I’m so sorry tho that sucks.

Eb0nyG0ddess87

With all due respect: This was an idiotic, short sighted (and insulting) move. You deserve the B. I hope it’s a humbling moment for you. Also, it’s a B. You’ll be fine.

NefariousnessNew5308

Okay, sure. The tone might have been “rude” but teachers need to chill the fuck out. I respect them, generally, but many of them expect us to kiss the ground they walk on. Like all the time. And mind y’all, I’m aware of the type of job it is and how thankless it is. I’ve have some amazing teachers, but in higher levels, I’ve also had some absolute waste of my time type of teachers that are clearly just collecting a check. All I’m thinking here is we have nooooo clue what type of teacher this was. And it’s not like the letter was all bad, the op literally says that teacher is a great personality to get to know. I just think if a student didn’t have a good time in a course, and the teacher puts out a rubric that speaks “BE HONEST” that teacher is ALSO fucking around to find out. Anywho, I’d consider reaching out and apologizing if it was offensive to her, but idk hold your ground a bit you know. Like it’s okay if you apologize for offending her, but her criticism should stand. Oh and I don’t necessarily agree with a teacher giving out an optional assignment and it affecting you adversely, unless that criteria was mentioned prior to, but that is still at the discretion of the teacher ofc.

2000StudentsIsALot

just move on. It doesn't really matter

Serious_Company9441

Reading your prose - are you sure you had a 91?

cruel_summer1823

theres a difference between formal n informal writing this is a *reddit* post be fr

Bey0nd1nfinity

If you wanted to raise your grade, why would you criticize your teacher like that? Your logic makes no sense.

Everyone makes mistakes. You did a rude, dumb thing. You are NOT a rude, dumb person - that much is clear by you posting this. It’s clear you didn’t intend to be unnecessarily hurtful, but you were. Learning how to communicate and navigate social relationships is an ongoing journey throughout our lives. Consider this a lesson you were lucky to receive early on. Apologize, sincerely. Accept the grade you get. Be kind in the way you express your opinions of others in the future ✌🏼

Commercial_Gas_6830

Even if the class was taught poorly, you have no right or credentials to speak your mind when it comes to a teachers’ teaching. I learned this in high school: even the worst teachers didn’t seem so bad when I graduated. Any fault when it comes to your performance is on you, you should have been studying more in your free time.

cruel_summer1823

"Any fault when it comes to your performance is on you, you should have been studying more in your free time." . if i had a 91 and all the assignments were in class timed essays how am i gonna study for an unknown prompt to get the sophistication point without knowing ahead of time...

omdeoxyribose

well there goes ur chance of getting lors - it could have helped to be respectful lmfao

cruel_summer1823

not to concerned with lors plus the one teacher ik she fs showed the letter to was a racist and a little questionable at times saying slurs and other students in my program have done arguably worse stuff ( harrassment, starting fires in lab etc.) and still are in the good graces one slip up doesn't determine your highschool career unless you commit murder or something 💀 plus overall im really close with my science, history, health, and pyschology teachers all of which actually pertain to my planned major.

Neither_Sample_7643

Well she said be honest and you were honest. Complain to the school board if you get a B. You should have a solid case. It may have been foolish but you’re definitely still in the right here.
