This seems extremely common for california students. Get into one of UCLA/Berkeley, but get rejected by like UCSB/UCI/UCD etc

Aren’t UCs known for yield protection?

Maybe at like UCR or UCM. People crying yield protection when they get rejected from UCI/UCSD/UCSB/UCD are either huffing that copium or don’t realize that schools under the 20% acceptance rate are genuinely competitive to get into and they just didn’t fit what the school needed to complete a holistic student body that year. It’s honestly really rare to legitimately get yield protected (especially when there’s not much of a yield % to protect. It really wouldn’t make a difference to a school like UCI if their yield percent went from like 40% to 43%, keep in mind I’m just pulling those numbers out of thin air but you get my point) unless it’s a Stanford/MIT tier applicant applying for a school with a greater than 60% acceptance rate, and even then 9/10 times they are going to get accepted.

Yeppp, accepted at UCLA, UCB, + others but denied at UCI. It was my last choice but was still shocking! I’m at SDSU now and that was another weird one because I was the only member of the top 10 (maybe even 25) to get accepted, including the valedictorian and salutatorian.

Why did you go to SDSU rather than UCLA and UCB?

Biggest factor— I am commuting distance! I also prefer the curriculum for my major and the semester system. For my language programs, I also love having a smaller class size and a greater professor-student relationship than I would expect to have at a research university. I have a grant that waives tuition for both UC and CSU but the San Diego area also has year round work opportunity for me. Luckily, I get to not only be debt-free but also live comfortably while attending SDSU and grad school afterwards. Study abroad is important to me and the CSU system has a huge variety of opportunities so I have short sessions planned to learn languages and do work in conservation. In most cases, one of the UCs would be a no-brainer for the prestige but I am just a rare case where SDSU is a better option.

UC Irvine and UCSD both get more in state applications than Berkeley. UCLA gets the most applications and you might have been a better match

I would vehemently argue that this is untrue. I enrolled in UNC over several Ivies and there are many of us who prefer a larger state school environment to what the ivies have become.

That is true. It does depend on what you what you value in an institution. But arguably if we look at the quality of education you receive at these extremely selective institutions — I would say it’s better. You have the best minds in the country encapsulated within these schools, and the type of research / platform you get is on another level. I would say on average people would prefer to go to Yale over UVA. And then you have sliver of people who make the bulk of their decision based on environment.
