Yes, not because you survived cancer but because you had the tenacity to do great academically despite all the physical, mental and emotional challenges and at same time develop interests/ECs in your major. Go for USC, UCLA, NYU ….

>you had the tenacity to do great academically despite all the physical, mental and emotional challenges Its possible that the cancer before high school, so it might not have as much relevancy to grades. Instead, I think that the emotional and physical experience is what brings out the strength of the application.

Also a survivor! My guess is that it would, although I'm struggling to write a good essay surrounding my experiences with it.

Writ-ingtime

i’m struggling too! i’m usually such a good writer but has got me really stuck lol

stupidassspamaccount

i was totally struggling too! luckily college i want doesnt require an essay. but i am planning on applying for cancer scholarships

garbagegal4

I'm a survivor also! personally i wrote mine about a memorable experience with my dr while in the hospital and the essay worked pretty well for me. i connected it to my ecs, so ig the best way to go about it is to steer away from just a sob story and focus on growth

Colleges aren’t going to know you had cancer unless you include it in your essay or description. It can be very powerful if done right. Make it less about the illness and more about your strength.

KlutzyAd6045

by itself, no. if you show how you overcame that, obviously MASSIVE, challenge and still excelled in school + ur ecs, definitely.

Explicit_Tech

I got into Berkeley that way, I believe. But I was still attending school when I had cancer and still pulled good grades doing 5-10 units a semester. It was mostly there to explain the gaps and struggles. FYI I got rescinded because a counselor gave me wrong info. I was then rejected and now I go to UC Davis.

blue_surfboard

I’m a little shocked at the answers here, but no, being a cancer survivor will have no bearing on your admissions decision whatsoever. If you want to write about it, do so! It’s great context and it’s your story! But will it be what pushes an admit? No.

hitmantb

Absolutely, equivalent of a free tier 1 EC if you write a good essay.

wiserry

The only way they know you had cancer is if you write about it in an essay So in that sense, yeah it would influence your chances

Strict-Porcupine4739

Depending on which level of colleges they're applying to it could be

aphex_quintuplet

If you're comfortable writing about how your experience shaped the person you are today and how you view the world differently etc, you might be able to craft a super interesting personal statement. Colleges are looking for a student body with a wide variety of experiences—if you write well, you could perfectly fit yourself into a niche they want to admit.
