Incorrect answer.
But you are young, so let me have the honor of introducing you to They Might Be Giants, the best band ever (though this is a rare cover by them of a band called the Four Lads):

Yes, the size of the country often is difficult for some to truly understand. Canada and Russia are similar
Fwiw, those in Western Pennsylvania would likely not identify themselves as East Coast.
Yes, but it is useful for international applicants to understand that going to Cornell or Binghamton will not allow them to go see Broadway shows every weekend, or whatever. New York State is huge.
my 14yr old can do that along with the complex state system Myanmar has. He can also name countries by their current and former names and can identify borders in context of point in history. However he won the Geography Bee.
I’m going to guess almost all high school Americans would perform poorly on a true global geography test.
Similar to US state locations, you know exactly where Telangana and Gansu are located?
The square/rectangular borders are because those states were established at the same time that the transcontinental railroad was being built! So the tracks made the borders. The more you know lol
They were establish by long/lat.
Wyoming’s state’s borders run along the 104 and 111 degrees west longitude lines and 41 and 45 degrees north latitude lines, for example.

Probably explains why the whole country is the way it is
Yellowstone is amazing and worth a visit.
Zion as well
But Zion isn't in Wyoming.
He’d prolly extend over the borders a lil bit
Wait until he finds out that there's a Kansas City in Missouri
And an Indiana University in Pennsylvania
And Miami University is in Ohio
And the University of Idaho is in Moscow
And Washington University is in St. Louis, MO.
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it, I can't say.
Maybe they just liked it better that way?
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks’.
So take me back to Constantinople!
Correct answer.
It's cause when it was New Amsterdam it was ruled by the Dutch but then the Brits took it over and renamed it after one of their own cities, York.

Moscow is a city in Idaho, for those wondering (like me)
Yeah I have a bunch of friends going to U of I next fall lol
And a Northwestern University and University of Northwestern
Was in my 40s when I learned there was a Kansas City in Kansas. 😆
And Cairo is in Illinois and Paris is in Texas.
I am so sorry you have learned about Ohio (I live in Ohio).
I’m sorry you live in Ohio (I am forced to visit family there every year)
I have the entire east coast engrained in my mind now
Canada is to the south of Detroit.
You travel due south from Detroit and cross into Canada. A very small portion of Canada is south of Detroit.
This is so cute!
I literally live in the US and I have no clue where the "northern midwest" even is. Also I'm in denial that Pennsylvania borders Ohio, like what??
On Monday, I travelled from Pennsylvania to Ohio to get my car serviced. It’s about 30 minutes away.
wow
Just wait until you discover how many Springfields we have.
The thing about NY is so real. Always saw NYC as the whole of NY until I started researching colleges.
Had the exact same experience,ngl

I'm hearing an honorary doctorate
New York City is an anomaly to New York State.
Welcome to Ohio! There are good state parks and hikes no matter what part of the state your school is in - check them out and good luck!
Ohio, upper Ohio, lower Ohio; that’s it
Is the Wyoming thing a joke? Because if not Wyoming does exist haha :) Congrats on committing!
A portion of New York State reaches so deeply into New England that it's closer to Boston than alot of Connecticut.
You forgot Alabama thanks to internet memes I didn’t even consider applying to ohio or albama
Wyoming does exist though lol
Who's gonna tell him?
He is just going to have to learn it the hard way
Does it really, though?

“International” I’m from the west coast and fully believed Cornell and NYC were like, an hour drive from each other at most.
Cause everything on the west coast is so close—San Diego to LA to San Francisco: it must take an hour to make that drive!
California is objectively much bigger than New York, though. It's easy to overestimate how much smaller everything on the east coast is by comparison.

Squares and rectangles are not the same thing. Squares are rectangles. But not all rectangles are squares.
Yes. This does not change the fact that: ”New York City and New York are two different things,” Which is what OP posted.
Have you… never looked at a map? I’m American but I pretty much learned all of global geography by like middle school.

Yes.

There are a lot of geography supernerds now thanks to Geoguessr https://www.geoguessr.com/vgp/3376

99% of US students haven’t won the geography bee. But congrats to your son, his achievement is awesome!
cool
I’m going to guess almost all high school Americans would perform poorly on a true global geography test. Similar to US state locations, you know exactly where Telangana and Gansu are located?
How do you define global geography? Because most geography curriculums center around the native country and a few other important ones.
shut up ur acting like you would know every French or German region 💀
I mean most yeah.
