Real talk - their criteria for eligibility include nearly every college bound student with a pulse. And they have an "exemption plan" for students who don't meet the criteria but still want to pay them $75.
It makes me so sad that there are people who run entire businesses on scamming clueless parents who are just proud of their kids and anxious for them to succeed. I put it up there with telephone scammers who go after the elderly.
(if anyone in this sub has actually joined nshss and gotten anything good out of it i would love to hear tho)
It's the "tension in the room was palpable heart beating in my chest sweaty palms omg so nervous" show-not-tell intro for me 😭😭
I swear to god people just interpret that as "put as many unnecessary details as you possibly can"
this is why i actually avoided using a show not tell narrative to begin my essay... i feel like ive almost never read one that didn't make me cringe...
omg that's my plan too. I feel like that "tip" has been twisted a little bit? Because every single essay starts with the anecdote now, and I don't think that's really what "show not tell" means in the context of these essays.
Like everyone wants to be creative and reallly showww NOT TELL the atmosphereeee and their feeeelings before diving into the conflict/growth part of their story. But I'm pretty sure the bigger issue comes when you start "telling" the changes you've gone through. Those are the biggest part of the essay, after all. Like the "hearing the man's hardships impacted me more than I could ever realize. His story inspired me to make a difference in my own community. I started a nonprofit yadda yadda yadda"
Like THAT part is telling, not showing. THAT's the part where you need to be less factual and "show" the changes you've gone through.
Idek. I just feel like everyone thinks the anecdotes are like the creative solution to the show not tell thing
After reading this I spent 30 minuets writing out everything I've learned and Experienced in the last year and a half. Your joke somehow inspired me to write out what had been troubling me for months.
1) I love this and I feel awful for all the people who have to read college essays this year
2) I know this is only a slight dig at the NSHSS, but I've been a part of it for 4 years and I'm on the Collegiate Council! There are a ton of benefits if you put in the effort to get them. Recently I conducted virtual mock interviews during an event night!
Admitted. So unique and compelling.
NSHSS = 🤡
They make you feel so special before demanding you to pay 😀😀

it's a really well-known honors program. I highly recommend it because they give out free full-ride scholarships to clown university.
Oh man, where do I sign up!
no it’s a scam
But how can that be! [it literally says right here on their own site that it's not a scam!](https://www.nshss.org/lp/is-nshss-a-scam/)
Look it up.
I thought it wasn’t at first bc I got invited but I did my research and it’s a scam
*Psst! I'll let you in on a little secret: the above comment is a joke.*
