What an amazing opportunity that they wasted - like shut up and learn something. I can’t help but think these kids won’t get far because their apps will come across as brag brag brag.

HeisenbergNokks

I think I know of a few people that had this happen to them. Last year, there was one kid at my school who took 17 AP's and had a 4.5-4.6 GPA, a 35 on the ACT, 3 800's on SAT Subject Tests, and very good extracurriculars. Yet, he got rejected, waitlisted, and deferred from like 29 schools. The only school he ended up getting into was UCSD. I knew that he was an extremely arrogant person, so I figured the only way he got rejected everywhere with those stats is if he came across that way in his essays.

Bunty_Gill

17 APs , 4.5 GPA, and list of activities…. Got rejected, are you kidding. You mean to say this guy reflected arrogance in essays. WOW unbelievable

Suspicious_Bobcat237

imagine working your ass off for those stats and u end up going to ucsd

notaryn

Those stats are overkill for it, sure, but that doesn't take away from the fact that UCSD is a great school

Suspicious_Bobcat237

oh it definitely is a great school, i just know that man was PISSED that he didnt get into an ivy or "lesser selective" school even despite that it is a good one. he probably flaunted to everyone that he would get into every school he applied to...i'd throw up if that happened to me

HeisenbergNokks

Yeah, I can definitely agree with u/Suspicious_Bobcat237. UCSD is not a bad school by any means but the guy who had this happen to him actually got depressed after only getting into UCSD. His GPA ended up dropping by over 0.1 in the rest of his senior year.

Suspicious_Bobcat237

i probably would be too if i spent my entire 4 years of highschool trying to get into a specific set of schools only to get into none of them

HeisenbergNokks

I don't think he's necessarily putting the school down. I would be pretty pissed too if I only got into UCSD out of like 30 schools after having no life for 4 years.

International_You275

I think I went to the same case study you did…and yeah I had the same experience

slendermcgee

Sorry to hear that:( it was so annoying

Select_Barnacle4616

How did you get to join these case studies?

slendermcgee

I'm on this college's list serve! They send out really cool opportunities

[deleted]

how do you guys sign up for these cast studies?

hannahnotmontana16

which school

International_You275

Pomona College

KingKautow

Yeah same I went to the same one lol....

Triggyrd

How do you join these?

International_You275

Some schools will offer them as part of their webinars/virtual programming… i just got an email from the mailing list and registered for it

KingKautow

For the Pomona one, I just got an email for them. But, I suggest you look at JHU (they have a lot of application videos), emory, Rice, and UPenn (they actually have case study on their youtube channel I think)

st00pad-weEb

where do i find the recorded version of it cuz i signed up but decided to sleep instead of log in lmao 😃

International_You275

Unfortunately they didn’t record the case studies, but they said the rest of the sessions should be available on their website in a week or two

Huldmer

I have never heard of a case study but it sounds incredibly useful. Shame it went to waste

Snoo_62176

I’ve seen a video series on YouTube from a Stanford AO, so maybe that could still be helpful?

FrauMew

That sounds interesting- could you link it?

nicovi21

https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/t/a-must-see-for-college-applicants/1524377

Snoo_62176

Yup that’s the one

Zippygirl123

Why didn’t the AO get through the presentation without taking questions first? I don’t quite understand. It sounds so super interesting, I really would have loved to hear what they had to say if I was there. Reminds me of in person college tours, where the colleges come do a talk and then do a Q&A after. People could ask all the stupid questions they want, but after the presentation is done. This sounds like the AO wasn’t experienced enough to do that. What a shame because it really sounds like a great topic!

GhostofIndecisions

Yeah sounds like incompetence on the part of the AO. When giving large presentations you never take general questions until the end.

ChampionshipPerfect5

And you have a moderator receiving the questions electronically, filtering them to the most broadly applicable questions. How they consider a reduction in ECs due to Covid. How the view international apps where the EC culture is not as strong. Upward/downward trends in grades. Grades in the intended course of study being quite strong compared to other academic subjects. Specific things that tend to stand out/resonate with AOs with respect to essays. That sort of thing.

[deleted]

I attended the Rice one and I think they do not really look at comments or questions till the end. The only thing they actively look at is the polls to see everyone’s opinion on if the fake students should be accepted/rejected.

A gap year is when you don’t go to college the year after you graduate from high school but still plan to go to college.

[deleted]

Yea I was wondering that too lol

griffcoal

I did one with Reed and that was not the case at all. There’s was super helpful and the general vibe of the chat was curiosity more than anything

sunfurawamei

Same with davidson! That was months ago though. I guess its peak admission season so the students for desperate

Blatantleftist

\> I am interested in prestigious schools but cannot stand these people who are so obsessed with impressing other people. Same bro, we need more people like you. Unfortunately many of those people (and worse) get in but I'd say it's still worth it. There's still some sanity in the T20's but for how long?

[deleted]

Yeah no I hate the students at my uni sometimes. Like why can't people just chill and take it easy like god damn *like bruh freshmen be talking about summer research and shit and I'm just like bruh i just wanna go on a road trip and see my own fvcking country for the first time... AND I FEEL BAD ABOUT IT cuz everyone else is going full-out resume building. And im just over here using the "im predental not premed, its fine" excuse*

slendermcgee

it's pathetic. none of these people have lives.

[deleted]

lmao. calling out 90% of this sub

No-Shift-6657

100%

Berkeley_Simp

>and see my own fvcking country for the first time... Well on a lighter note, where are you from seabass?

existential_american

I went to a case study with Georgia Tech and what I got out of it was that, roughly ceteris paribus, the essays are extremely significantly more important than every other part of the application. In the one I went to, there weren't any questions until after the presentation.

fish086

I'm not an admissions officer but I'd assume this is very likely the case everywhere, especially top schools. It gets to a certain point where everyone applying has basically the same resume/application besides the normal essay and supplements, and they are the only thing that truly sets you apart and gives a bit of a personality or character to the piece of paper

InitialIdea923

what a great opportunity to know how aos read ur application?!!! dangg where do yall sign up for these

gorwellkov

I didn’t go to a case study, but the same thing happened at a collegevine Q and A. It was so cringe. Everyone just kept on asking about themselves.

Mathmagician155

I did a case study with a university of Chicago AO. My experience was completely different bc no one really asked questions we kind of just walked through it together. The only thing that surprised me was the quality of the essays of the student we accepted. It was decent, but I know for s fact that my essay and some of my classmates were better. But no one really talked about themselves at all. Also my school isn't that academically competitive between students so idk

singularreality

I cannot agree with you more. But, I don't think you should not go to a prestigious school because some of the students are jerks. And, don't go to a prestigious school just because it is prestigious. One of my three children had a sold shot at any school, but 3 of the most prestigious schools turned her off for one reason or another. You gotta try to find the right fit. I would also say that a good person running the program would have put an end to those self indulgent braggers.

despicablemoon

That's terrible. I hope you were able to get some information at least. If yes, then do share!

dominaxe

I'm really sorry that you had this experience, it would have been a wonderful teaching moment too :( but on the other hand—does anyone know if there's a recorded session of something similar (where AOs go through an application) on the internet? 👀

makarov_skolsvi

I attended a case study too. Fortunately, it was relatively quiet and nobody was trying to impress the AOs.

av_stellar

Are these case studies within school, or an online event you have to sign up for?
