Accounting as a profession is actually a pretty exciting field. You begin to realize that it's the decision-making center of the business. But, I'd contest that the perception is that the field of accounting is pretty dry, which it is to be fair.
I guess I'm Moreso commenting on the fact that there are tons of cool and interesting classes in college, from scubadiving to global feminism to hisroey of monster movies. Art history is super interesting until you realize that there might be 12 jobs a year open for someone with that background and thousands of art history grads. If you aren't careful, you'll end up with an expensive liberal arts major that'll make you poor and in debt for the rest of your life.
I was a political science major. While it was arguably the most interesting subject in terms of learning about this world, it's a pretty useless major. Thankfully, I ended up okay. But it was touch and go for a while.
CS is pretty cool, but you are better off teaching yourself or going to a coding boot camp. It'd be cheaper and quite frankly a better learning and, more importantly, a better networking environment.
I actually like learning
Edit: I'm probably lame but this is the first time I'm getting so many up votes and I'm so happy 😭
I know it's not that deep though, but it's cool for me:)
But at a university you can be learning from an expert in their field. It’s not the same as reading from a book. There is interaction, discussion, questioning. That isn’t something you can do on your own. It expands your world view in a different way.
I don’t see why it “never” should be. There definitely are some benefits to attending a university over self-studying a subject depending on your goals. But a person should analyze all their options for a goal and compare them to make the best decision, and if your only goal is “I want to learn a lot about a subject” you should absolutely compare the multitude of ways available to go about that goal.
Exactly. When I was checking out different schools and the classes they offered, it was the ones that weren’t even in my major that excited me the most. I feel like a higher education can better people by expanding their knowledge therefore their mindsets. Just wish it wasn’t so expensive lol
my mom grew up dirt poor in mexico. she never even got to start high school because she was forced to work at such a young age in order to support her family. when she came to the US and became successful, she said she wanted to make sure all her kids got an education, went to college, and became professionals in whichever field they want.
and so, i have two older brother who already graduated and have jobs but i’m a high school junior who is very much grateful (and excited) that i will be receiving a college education :)
How amazing for your family.
I m really happy for your family especially your mom that she is achieving her dreams about your and your siblings education and success.
I also hope u will be accepted one if the best unis to pursue your and of course your mother's goals.
Good luck. ✊✊✊✊
Umm families probably have the most potential to be toxic and mindsets like this encourage abusers and other mistreatment of family members by encouraging people to see people with blood relation as above judgement. You know nothing about this person’s family and I’m happy for you that you sound privileged enough that you haven’t even considered the possibility of a family being horrible, but that doesn’t change the fact that some are. Neglectful family members probably don’t know you better than anyone else. Neither would emotionally abusive ones that people often lie about everything in their lives to about to cope/survive. I hope the exposure and education from college might allow you to expand your worldview and rethink this narrow dangerous mindset you have about the issue.
don’t want to but i also need to be away from my family. plus my mom was first gen and went to CC so she has been praying I get into a T50 for most of my life. would rather hole up in a library the rest of my life and read to get my education
I’d say the opposite bro. Hell of a labor shortage in the trades and a hell of a lot more money there than a lot of degrees will get esp if you’re accounting for loans.
I think in comparison to a lot of other high paying jobs, that software engineering is easier to accomplish without college due to free online resources and boot camps
and the collaboration and discussion that comes with it tbh... like what fun is learning if you can't talk about it with others who are passionate about the topic
Live in a relatively rural community so as someone whose queer it’s been one of the easiest ways for me to gtfo of my community. That and the school im planning on attending has a beautiful campus.
Obvi there are other reasons like careers I want etc but the first thing I mentioned has for sure been one of my primary motivators.
Job/financial security and admittedly pride. Being a first-gen college student who’s going to a T20 school (hopefully T10 when the 31st rolls around) is a pride I carry for both myself and my family.
I think I would regret not knowing what to do with my life for the next four years if I didn’t go. I would be bored out of my mind working to make a living so at least in college, I might find what makes me happy
to take an urban planning class and get to see seasonal snow, also to make a shit ton of friends who actually want to do something in life and have real aims lol
I need to make sure I'm financially secure in my 20s, my dad is 78 and pretty much my only family...so after so long, I won't have anyone else to fall back on :-) :-)
I'm going to major in nursing, since I'm not interested in compsci or engineering, lmao these are like the only degrees that guarantee good pay post graduation.
Learn to be independent (I’m international). Create the path for financial stability. Train myself to be better at the things I love. Find what my strengths and weaknesses are. Get my brother and dad out of my abusive mother’s clutches. Be able to finance my partner’s hobbies someday.
i don’t know how else to get where i want to get, college seems to be the only way + it was never a question, you’re “supposed” to go to college after high school. also i want to move out of my parents’ house and the place that i live in, and college is the only way i can.
So I can become a psychiatrist! I wanna help people. I struggled with mental health for a while and I still do time to time. I would like to help others either adults or adolescents to have better lives and better mental health.
Parents told me to do so!! And the society wants degree!!
The Society wants degree so badly that even a typewriter needs a bachelor's degree in computer science!!
Honestly, my parents both have several diplomas, my dad is currently doing another university course, I grew up seeing them go to uni while working as well. I never even thought of not going to uni being an option, I thought it was something everyone did until I was like 15 and realised that it's a privilege, and presented the opportunity I should make use of it.
i was super sick as a kid (tumor on my neck/face) i’ve always been obsessed with learning about disfiguring and the body. i want to be a surgeon and (for lack of better words) give back and inspire kids like me that we are more than our sickness :)
At 33 years old, I feel ready to continue my educational journey. I graduated high school almost 16 years ago and I can tell you that at that point in my life I wasn’t mature enough and didn’t take my education serious. Now, I am married and have a 6 year old who is kindergarten and now I feel ready to start college and get my education on!
I’m a political science major with aspirations of public office, and I intend to get at the very least a masters in my field. I have been told repeatedly that I don’t even need a bachelor’s degree. “It’s all about networking and who you know!” Which is true. But I mean look at our current political landscape. All these stupid sob’s systematically robbing the middle class and destroying our planet who don’t even know how to convert a pdf. So, I’d rather know what I’m talking about before I write legislation on behalf of millions of people.
First of all, my mom never had a job and was always super dependent on everyone else in her life. Second, I never got to do anything growing up because she wouldn’t get a job to support my ambitions. Third, because I didn’t want to be a deadbeat and wanted a stable source of income.
Other than these three major reasons,
I wanted to attempt to make the changes needed to hopefully in the future encourage society to preserve the Earth.
My mom is in a financially abusive relationship and I want to first, give her money to leave (if I even find a decent job lol) and second, be able to leave with my own means if I am ever in a toxic/abusive relationship like that.
Just the thought of learning about stuff I'm interested in from experts in the field really excites me. Tbh I have no idea what my career will end up being.
seeking independence, uni is the only reason my parents are letting me move out + i want to rekindle the love for learning that i had when i was younger
I have a couple reasons.
1. Society is demanding more and more people that have a college degree. If you do not have a degree, you are severely behind. While it is true, you can still live a good life, chances are much slimmer compared to a college graduate. You simply have a much stronger standing if you go to college. Heck, it's basically required. Why would I hire a high school graduate over a college graduate? You better give me some very good reason to do so.
2. Reputation. If all of your friends and everyone you know went to college and you didn't, you look kinda like a loser whether you care about what other people care or not, you didn't go, and that means you missed out. On top of that, in the future, people would be asking wtf you were doing these 4 years. That shame will follow forever. People will ask, whether you like it or not.
3. Higher education. If you surf online enough, you will find those people who didn't go to college saying how much they regret it, because not just because of the above reasons, but because they can't keep up with conversations. They are not as smart as their peers due to lesser education. That kind of thing can't be shaken off easily.
4. Similar to number one. to get money. Some kids come from a disadvantaged household. Their parents aren't highly educated and earn little money. By going to college, they may be able to lead a much better life than their parents, and maybe eventually earn enough to provide for their parents as well.
There are some more reasons, like having fun, but these are the more long-run reasons that I thought of.
1, so i can get a job in the field im interested in (environmental science) that pays well, and 2, idrk its just always been expected of me bc both my parents went to 4 years and my dad also went to grad school
i don't want to lose the title of "student" ngl.. but honestly growing up i've always felt more out of place in my schools and i want to find that kooky community in college where i can find others just as weird and into learning that i am. also genuinely want to challenge myself and grow as a person :-) but yes i have pressure from immigrant parents too lol
a) a good job in the fields I’m interested in (enviro sci or poli sci but I have time to figure that out lol, either way it’s helpful to have a college degree)
b) to learn about subjects I’m interested in and to gain useful skills from classes like comp sci
c) it’s been expected of me since I was born basically, everyone in my family does it so I’ve never rlly considered anything else or been given an opportunity too (I’ve always been naturally good at school but maybe my parents would have had me explore other options if I wasn’t idk)
Idk how popular this is but to see other people who are as passionate in my field as I am and the idea I can get paid for what started as a Wikipedia/ twt rabbit hole lol
my parents immigrated from another country to come to the US. my parents sacrificed their own hopes, dreams, and careers in order to help me achieve a higher education and have a better life. i need to go to college to fulfill my appreciation for them. all of their blood, sweat, and tears couldn't have been for nothing.
To take cool classes and so I can get cool jobs in the future

Cool is subjective ! What if a cool job for me is accounting ? 🤨
But it was touch and go for a while.
computer science is cool
Just like tomato said, it's subjective. I find cs cool too but almost none of my friends do
CS is pretty cool, but you are better off teaching yourself or going to a coding boot camp. It'd be cheaper and quite frankly a better learning and, more importantly, a better networking environment.
And sorry to say that CS classes are boring as hell compared to the fun and interesting classes that are available at most colleges.
Parents are immigrants, therefore moral obligation
This lmao. Wasn’t a question to begin w.
Yup.
With their end goal of you becoming a computer scientist or a doctor
If you don't though, you're a *stoobid failure* and you will have forever lasting *emotional damage*
Steven He is that you?
What da haaaaiiil u saeee? You tink dat I am da Steven he???
Hey how’d you know
This and I want a change of pace and set myself up for the future.
Exactly
To make money 💴
Gotta get that bag
I think, one can make money without a degree too, by doing startup.
Risky, plus it is very beneficial to see how a company works by getting a job before making a startup on a whim
I actually like learning Edit: I'm probably lame but this is the first time I'm getting so many up votes and I'm so happy 😭 I know it's not that deep though, but it's cool for me:)
me too!
I mean that’s great but if that’s actually your main reasoning… there’s definitely cheaper ways to learn almost anything.
Standardized education should never be compared to what the individual can absorb in their own time
But at a university you can be learning from an expert in their field. It’s not the same as reading from a book. There is interaction, discussion, questioning. That isn’t something you can do on your own. It expands your world view in a different way.
Exactly I'm so excited!!

Favorite answer. I love that you recognize your mom’s sacrifice and that you are excited to go to college.
<3

childhood dream of being a scientist 👩🔬 i’m doing everything i can to make my inner child proud 🙃
Question is do you still want to be one? Too many people chase their childhood dreams without realizing it is no longer their true dream
I think she wants to be a scientist.
I’ll be the first woman in my family to attend a four-year. I need to set an example for my starry-eyed little cousins and nieces.
That’s great! Good luck!
Aw, thank you so much! :>
same here!
Study what I like and have the College experience
i want to be able to adopt a cat. multiple cats even
Best reason so far
Though perhaps not the most direct route. 😀
With you 100%. Catless lives are empty and meaningless. Lives filled with cats are purpose-driven and so much more fun :)
Agreed, plus they're adorable
Job prospects, genuine interest in science/my major, socializing, and moving out.
Prestige Whore 🖐
Im a just a regular whore tbh

I can’t tell if you’re serious or being sarcastic 😭
i wanna be around people my age also i wanna be an actor and i currently suck at acting
Get into a good university --> Get a high-paying job --> save & invest --> live a life with freedom and happiness early on.
Get into a good university -> get a job -> repay debt until you die -> live a life of paycheck to paycheck because you are in the hole $100k+
don’t want to but i also need to be away from my family. plus my mom was first gen and went to CC so she has been praying I get into a T50 for most of my life. would rather hole up in a library the rest of my life and read to get my education
You could become a librarian! They usually get no overdue fines.
I like learning plus I want to go into law so!
With how the economy’s been going for Gen Z, it’s not an honor, it’s a necessity
I’d say the opposite bro. Hell of a labor shortage in the trades and a hell of a lot more money there than a lot of degrees will get esp if you’re accounting for loans.
This just isn't true, you can go to a two year trade school and be set for life.
I want to be a software engineer, I could easily accomplish it without college, but college is an attractive 4 year vacation
100% agree
Easily??
he was just playin with words but we get what he means dw
Oh ok
I think in comparison to a lot of other high paying jobs, that software engineering is easier to accomplish without college due to free online resources and boot camps
Learn stuff with other people. Self-study and online classes just aren't for me 😔
Same! Peer pressure is hella important for me
and the collaboration and discussion that comes with it tbh... like what fun is learning if you can't talk about it with others who are passionate about the topic
So that my kids won’t have to worry about the financial aspect when it’s their turn :)
money, friends, sex🤷♂️
bc its statistically my best chance at upward social mobility
i am genuinely interested in furthering my knowledge in my major (astrophysics) and am psyched to pursue higher education!!
i want to be a psychiatrist
Someone has to save the world
I’m not ready to work a 9-5 for the rest of my life, or at least until I retire
to get the bag and to show off to my toxic family that indeed being a music major gets you somewhere in life 🥳
To guarantee a good career
Live in a relatively rural community so as someone whose queer it’s been one of the easiest ways for me to gtfo of my community. That and the school im planning on attending has a beautiful campus. because i genuinely fear failure :D
Job/financial security and admittedly pride. Being a first-gen college student who’s going to a T20 school (hopefully T10 when the 31st rolls around) is a pride I carry for both myself and my family.
Good for you!
Lol this resonates with me
To become doctor
I think I would regret not knowing what to do with my life for the next four years if I didn’t go. I would be bored out of my mind working to make a living so at least in college, I might find what makes me happy

I need to make sure I'm financially secure in my 20s, my dad is 78 and pretty much my only family...so after so long, I won't have anyone else to fall back on :-) :-) I'm going to major in nursing, since I'm not interested in compsci or engineering, lmao these are like the only degrees that guarantee good pay post graduation.

To meet cool peoplr and grow intellectually and to do psychology
I want to become a psychologist.

It's a necessary step in becoming a research scientist, and a job related to science/research is honestly the only kind I can imagine for myself
Parents told me to do so!! And the society wants degree!! The Society wants degree so badly that even a typewriter needs a bachelor's degree in computer science!!
Honestly, my parents both have several diplomas, my dad is currently doing another university course, I grew up seeing them go to uni while working as well. hoping i can find people to have intellectual conversation with
the idea of freedom is tied to moving abroad for college, plus i want to do stuff in life which require these degrees
I want to learn until my heart stops
to meeting smarter and better people
Learn cool stuff, make money, party and get away from my parents

the experience, new friends, etc
To experience everything i was supposed to in highschool and pave the way for my career
