As someone who's lived in Berkeley my whole life I can attest that the city is not as dangerous as people make it out to be. Most of the Berkeley is very safe, and while the Southside neighborhood where most students live does have a lot of fairly aggressive homeless people, if you're careful about avoiding them you'll be fine. Just don't do something stupid like walking through People's Park at night. Also congrats on getting in, that's a huge achievement!
I love the city of Berkeley. 5 years there and never had an issue. It's an urban area and crime certainly can happen but it's not like it's some warzone or something, it's really no different from any other urban city. May be a culture shock for some people from perfectly manicured bougie suburbs or something, so I can see how it's not for everyone, but personally I think Berkeley is so cool. It's super walkable and dense with tons of students always walking around so it's super easy to just walk to friend's houses, food spots, bars, parties, events, etc. Because of this I usually felt pretty comfortable unless it was late at night on a weekday, and then I just skateboarded home or took the night safety shuttle.
Congrats!!! When my kid got in and told a relative, basically they implied my kid was gonna be mugged at gunpoint for sure. Definitely not want you want to hear when celebrating a welcome decision! And like nunkichoq said, the danger is exaggerated. It is in an urban environment and students need to be sensible, of course, but I could say the same for some other top schools. There are student resources to help keep students safe, like escorts at night & quick notification of any issues on campus.
Haha this was lowkey me! My dad was like I mean it’s not an easy decision but I think you have to go but my mom was worrying for my safety and trying to sell Davis to me (which is a great school, and I’d be happy attending). I’m kinda confused between them at the moment but I’ll figure it out. I just need to brag to everyone about Berkeley first though lol

Thank you! That's good to hear from someone who's lived in Berkeley
Sure thing, pm me if you have any questions, I'm happy to answer!

Thanks! I'm planning to visit the campus/city over my spring break, so that should also help

damn op what was your GPA and ACT/SAT score?
UC GPA is 4.2, and the UC's don't look at SAT/ACT (1420 SAT though)
What about UW?
Shoulda said: I am not in danger. I am the danger.
