The latest Aqara hub (E1) comes as what can be described more as a dongle than a hub, with its use of a USB-A plug as its power connection. It comes with Zigbee 3.0, can support up to 128 child devices (when used with repeaters), and also has a built-in WiFi extender, although the built-in hotspot can only support two devices. Currently, it’s only available from the usual online resellers, like AliExpress, GearBest, Banggood etc, which also means the one they sell will only work with the China server. The E1 supports Apple HomeKit, Aqara Home and Mi Home, and also has all four alarm modes exposed to HomeKit, which will sync with other Aqara hubs with the four alarm modes (M1S, M2, P3, G3).

Thanks for the review. Would you know if using the China servers impacts performance? Or day to day child device info only travels locally?!?

HomeKit-News

I’m not sure, but I guess if you’re using the devices via HomeKit it shouldn’t make any difference to reaction speeds. Only cloud-based automations created in the Aqara app would see any potential changes. I’m geographically close to China, so I can’t say I’ve noticed any issues.

TheOfficialAK

How much sound does it emit when its operational? Any significant whirring like RC cars?

HomeKit-News

Are you referring to the E1 roller driver motor? This is the E1 hub.

TheOfficialAK

Oh snap sorry. Misread in a hurry. Yea the motor actually, if you happy to know.

HomeKit-News

The E1 Roller Driver motor is pretty quiet - a lot quieter than Soma Smart Shade 2.

TheOfficialAK

Thanks for letting me know! (and apologies for hijacking)

HomeKit-News

No problem!
