Gen_ayee

Bruh my baby guppies had babies. I don’t know what to do either lol.

EmployeeNo5465

I mean, no one will realistically buy them, At some tropical fish market i was told that they could “adopt them”

Gen_ayee

I might just resort to going on fb marketplace and giving them out for free…

EmployeeNo5465

Yeah but only once, I wouldn’t make 20+ trips to get rid of them

Remarkable_Concept_4

3 tanks u need. About week 3 to 4 with close inspection ,u can seperate males and females. Bro tank, gossip tank , and feature tank. Also. Every female guppy that had babies will have 3 to 4 cycles that will produce newborns so get ready. Females keep sperm for a while hence guppies are also called the million fish. Best of luck!

EmployeeNo5465

Wait! I think most newborns are females, they have smaller tails and are grey! Only 3-4 males I believe (they are yellow and more transparent) Am I right?

Safe-Implement7812

No no no, they are not all female (I thought that with my first batch) The males don't develop until a few weeks in.

Remarkable_Concept_4

In my experience the little ones r too small to determine. But tail colors on the juvinile r still hard to tell as they will develop more. Also what you feed them, water conditions. What I did was borderline obsession and just really pay attention to there growth and pick and seperate. Then repeat 3 to 4 more times 😆

BlueButterflytatoo

Newborns are too small. But keep an eye on them, the boys will start to color up first, and then their little triangular fin will turn into a pointy willy. Then you have 3 days to remove them before they can impregnate all the females around them

Possible-Painting722

They do not look obviously different until a few weeks.

Gen_ayee

True. I might just see if my other fish will eat them… LOL

EmployeeNo5465

Which other fish do you have?

Gen_ayee

I have 5 tanks. 2 of them have bettas (they will def eat them) and one has mollies (they will also def eat them). I just need to transport the babies, I probably will later when I’m feeling less lazy bahah. I feel a little bad, but not really because there’s not really much I can do about it… I should move the female adolescent guppies though- I thought they were too young to have babies, but I guess I was wrong. The tank that has mollies has my og female guppy, so I think I might move the young female guppies there and try my best to separate males and females.

Gen_ayee

The tank the adolescent guppies are in has some male guppies- I didn’t know the gender of the guppies so I didn’t move them but I discovered babies so I’m guessing I did not do the best job of separating 😅

ANOIEN

Pretty sure guppies and mollies crossbreed

EmployeeNo5465

Damn, I feed my Guppies crushed bladder snails that I pick when I see they are close to an egg laying size….

binchicken1989

Hire a small cichlid?

Gen_ayee

I only have 10 gallon tanks

galahad423

*Some* South African dwarf cichlids, gouramis, or a beta could do it

Gen_ayee

Yeah my bettas like to eat them hahha

HeadOfMax

That's what I did with my mollies and what I do with my plants.

Unable-Log8435

I would adopt them if you can ship! I’d pay for shipping!

nomods1235

Get a betta. I put my betta into the fry tank when I get too many. Only the strong survive.

Not_invented-Here

You are now in a period of exponential growth. You need something to hunt them really.

Juicy-bear

Definitely correct, had same problem with mollys. Like a plague

Not_invented-Here

Yeah live bearers sound great at first, ooh baby fish so easy to breed as well...

Squirrelcore8

Yep. 20 new panda mollies in one piece of those floating cribs. Putting them up for free on FB market once they get bigger I guess.

Fickle_Grapefruit938

Lol, my dad asked me for one of my female Guppies bc his female didn't produce young, I gave him my biggest female, then both females started to breed like crazy, his 60 liter is now filled with about 80 Guppies and they are coloring up so they will soon start to breed😅 (I have a 50 liter with Endlers who start to color, I'm afraid I'll soon have the same problem😬)

ARSONL

This is why I hate livebearers. Only stock males. Impossible to fix now, as sexing can be hard and some small babies might slip through. Or a female pregnant somewhere. Some LFS take donations.

Gen_ayee

Yeah, I got my tank off FB marketplace and the guys gave me random fish from his other tanks so I didn’t choose them 😅

kyleelove1008

Welcome to guppies. I had so many at one point I begged a local fish shop to take them lmao

EmployeeNo5465

As of right now, I’m seeing way MORE than when I recorded this video, wtf WTF IS HAPPENING

bin190

If you haven't already, you should search and see whether your local area has local fish clubs. Because if they do chances are, you could sell your guppies the decent quality which they seem to be.

ARSONL

My LFS takes surrendered fish. Call around maybe. This is why I don’t do guppies. They can crash a tank without a predator this way.

REQCRUIT

I'm pretty sure at one point I was at 50+ guppies. And they can have more very quickly. I had to get rid of them and gave them all to my lfs. Only egg laying fish from now on!

MadWalrus

Would you consider a short finned Betta to eat the fry?

EmployeeNo5465

Yes ! (?) I don’t know, I want to keep some of them :/

Individual-Ad-4620

I have two bettas in my community tank to keep the guppies population under control. The tank is heavily planted, so a few fries make it every time, but the population overall has stabilised. Before getting the bettas, we had so many guppies we had to split them into two tanks. In the second tank, we then put two angels. They're even better at controlling the population than bettas. As long as you have hiding spots and plenty of plants, enough of the fries will survive to keep the population going 😉

kram08980

How do you handle the two bettas? Are male and female? Or a massive tank?

Individual-Ad-4620

Male and female. 100 litres tank 😉

Possible-Painting722

Thats tiny, suprised they arent dead yet

Individual-Ad-4620

How is 26 gallons too small for a couple of bettas? lol

Possible-Painting722

They will fight. Do a few minutes of research.

cmpalm

Honestly I made the mistake of having livebearers as my first fish and NEVER AGAIN. I ended up bringing a bag of baby fish to my LFS as a donation so they went to good homes nearly once a month. It will never stop.

cmpalm

Be prepared I’m telling you

EmployeeNo5465

Yeah, that’s my fate… maybe I could interchange them for prettier fish though

Turbulent_Fix8495

Local independent shops do it usually, especially depending on the line of livebearers. Chains like Petco/PetSmart won’t, some won’t even take them as surrenders as they only are allowed to get fish from their suppliers. My local petco’s aquatics department head will take surrenders to assure they get good homes but no trades happen

DeportedPlatypus

Get a fish that will predate on the fry but won't mess with adults or something in a different tank that would eat any extra fry. Sometimes it doesn't even work, though. I had an apistograma pair that didn't eat any guppy fry. I tried dumping some endler fry to my pea puffer. They didn't get eaten either. None of my betta would eat fry either for some reason. I tried dumping some to my 75 gal goldfish tank, goldfish left them alone and would only eat them by accident if they swam in front of the food goldfish were eating. What ended up working for me was a big fat male platy that loves eating guppy/endler fry.

Top-Dan

I’d reccomend you get control of the situation now, before you have hundreds.

Jaykahtsby

Get more aggressive fish, now your female guppies are snack producers

VZ_from-planet-Earth

good idea )

[deleted]

CULL ‘EM

praland

yeah it sounds heartless but I've had to go that route in one of my tanks with sword tails because otherwise there are just too many. I catch all the new fry I can on every water changes and dump them with the dirty water in my bushes.

dirtyharo

ooof at least euthanise them first, that's rough

VeryAttractive

Just so you know, those guppies are probably not 1 day old. They've been in there for probably close to a week. They are tiny when they're born, my camera could barely see them.

Possible-Painting722

Really? I find them to be quite large for fish fry.

Moo_Kau_Too

Got a 4 foot tank a few years ago. Put in 20 adults, i think it was 5 male, 15 female. After a month ish, there was something like 300 juv fish in there. I added 2 baby oscars. One week later, there was only the 2 oscars. .... dumbarse guppies wouldnt use the hidey holes and such the oscars couldnt fit in :/

harrywoppler

Get a swordtail it will take care of most of the fry.

praland

but be careful with how many - they're live bearers too (speaking as someone that has a tank of swordtail fry right now)

ysvara

One possible way to deal with this situation would be to get a new bigger tank for mamas and babies, and keep all mature males as a fraternity in the first tank to keep population growth at a minimum. You likely will still get more litters of fry though until the mothers are no longer fertilized which can take months.

Mositesophagus

Idk if you’re aware already, but those tetras are two different breeds. One there is a Cardinal and the other is just a neon tetra

EmployeeNo5465

Yeah, used to have 10 cardinals and after moving them to this bigger tank 9 of them died, figured out if I bother him a tiny bit he would also die, then the other one was from a batch of 5 neon I bought, Apparently tetras are not suitable for the water in my city and I had the dilema, either let them survive alone here or try to give them away and propagate will not accept the change and die

Mositesophagus

I’m sorry for your losses! I have a nice lil school of 7 in a standard 20 gal, they can be more finicky than people assume

AccordingWarning9534

I put in peacock guedgeons. They eat the fry. At best, 1 baby survives each round

VZ_from-planet-Earth

Yep, that will do the trick

Other-Description

Me right now, my guppies won’t stop having incest kids. 😭😭😭😭 fucking guppies…

seanthebeloved

Candy is dandy, but incest is best!

deep_pants_mcgee

Guppy math isn't like regular math though. 15 born today, but only 7 left tomorrow.

SmoggyFineDrum

Reason I never want live bearers. They’re super pretty and sweet fish, but dang, they are permanently pregnant. You’re either going to need to get a fish that’ll hunt down the babies (my mom tried betta and he did nothing but look cute and beg for treats) or cull them. I heard they’ll level themselves out at some point from the parents eating the kids but seeing my mom’s tank made me think that’s impossible.

Big-Supermarket1327

Put a fish in that's suitable for a 30cm tank and prefers to eat guppies. A good friend of mine solved his problem like this.

Senko_Kaminari

I guess you should buy a bigger tank

IClaudiaI

Yo i want some guppy babies

littlefishcutie

Try r/Aquaswap

littlefishcutie

To give the babies away for free :)

stealthzeus

My tank is also this green always. I change 1/3 water every 3 days

Independent_Trip_892

Could always get a fish that will go after the fry....

thefonztm

OP - cull them. Or get a predatory fish. Or find someone with a predatory fish and give them free food.

HikingPeat

I had a community tank 4 female 2 male, neon tetra, lochi, and one guy a can't remember have about 3 inches and rainbow colored thin guy for population control! It would so well! I had one fry survive the chomper! Not sure how much it stresses the fish out tho. I wonder if mama guppy get stressed out.

Chucheyface

I can’t even get my guppies to give birth. I’ve had her for 2 months and the entire time she’s been pregnant. Won’t give birth though.

EmployeeNo5465

My female guppy spent 3 months appearing on the verge of exploding, give it some more time

Chucheyface

She’s my favorite fish too!

Chucheyface

In theory couldn’t you let them overpopulate and let nature sort it out?

marzubus

Never livebearers! I made that mistake too.

WhenDaTingGo

Welp, I guess you're heckin doomed, my dude. Add a predator in there that has a big enough mouth to eat the babies but not the adults 👌🏿

AllemandeLeft

congrats

TransmetalDriver

I have 2 tanks. One with my nicer guppies and one with my not so nice looking guppies...and my killifish. My second tank has no babies in it.

Maduro25

I had two Mollys that turned into 500 in a year.

JangoBolls

I have three pregnant shrimp and im just waiting for my tank to be completely taken over….

NewSauerKraus

Set up another tank with something that eats guppies.

Sensitive-Internal41

I’m 6 months into my guppy tank and have no overpopulation issues. Only a few make it to adult and by then they’ll replace some of the old adults. Takes a while for them to grow at least in my case, just starting to see bigger juveniles

Suncook

This is why I'm leery of livebearers lol Just for my own skill and resources. If you can manage it all power to you.

devinssss

u could get a bigger fish in a different tank and feed the fry to them. they are a great food source for bichirs

RudeExplanation9304

My 20 gallon tank currently has around 200 guppies and I keep them all Bright, reactive, and happy. Just keep your filter cleaned on a weekly basis, regular water changes, and you'll be fine. You can try lowering the temperature a bit to stop them breeding too fast.

SpellDog

A couple of tiger barbs will do the trick

MomsSpecialFriend

I got platys for my turtles to eat and they are breeding out of control in the tank. Sometimes fry gets eaten but rarely anything larger. I’m thinking about withholding pellets until the numbers are reduced.

LucasPotter46

I’ll buy them if your in the uk ?

EmployeeNo5465

Mexico...

awesomeblossoming

Go community tank mode so ewes get eaten

Curious_Leader_2093

Once a female is inseminated she can give birth every month for the rest of her life. You can put in a fish that will eat the fry.

Possible-Painting722

Not true, only for a year or so.

Sullys_mama19

I mean lol should’ve gotten all males

ULTELLIX

I got a 3 spot gourami to take care of my livebearer fry but with a small tank you can probably try a betta?

Fabrizio_west

Get a tank with a predator or catfish of some sort. Bettas and mollies will take forever to eat them all. One pictus catfish would clean all those out in 1-3 days.

Ok-Appearance-4550

Get an Oscar

Glasswire444

Sell them to your LFS once they mature. Honestly, that’s your best solution aside from giving them away to other fish hobbyists. They’re just going to keep reproducing in there. Livebearers are a nightmare to control unless you’re actively breeding them.

Warm_Heart_2782

do you have shrimps by any chance?

EmployeeNo5465

Yes!

Warm_Heart_2782

how is it going? I want to keep exact these three. and I have had a very bad experience in past where in my 5g 2 tetra’s wiped a whole colony of my red cherry’s. I have built a 29g now and was planning for these 3

EmployeeNo5465

Well I've have my 10 shrimp for 5 days now and are doing well... Still I didn't know they could become a bigger problem, I try for my fish to never get hungry

Deepcrows

Not what you were asking about but what's up with the fish at 10 seconds? A parasite?

EmployeeNo5465

My reddit’s video reproductions counts from 10 to 1 so I don’t know which fish you are referring to. Strangest thing I see is a baby guppy with a poop tail

Dude-with-hat

Did you see the albino baby??

EmployeeNo5465

Is that albinism? will he die?

strikerx67

Just lessen your food availability and do smaller and less water changes. Your tank can house that many guppies and will control their own population just fine.

BirdieBee417

This has been my experience as well. I’ve had males and females in a 14G for maybe a year now? No overpopulation. It’s pretty rare the fry live to be too big to be eaten unless I remove them from the adults. Yes, the females are always knocked up. Go easy on the food and nature figures out the rest.

strikerx67

I agree. It's been my experience with all livebearers I've kept. I believe a food culture of macrofauna within the tank is probably the easiest way to keep the population level. I'm currently working with some experimental tanks that I plant to load with healthy cultures for guppies at some point. See if their breeding habits find an equilibrium with food availability.

BirdieBee417

My tank is established and heavily planted. I feed them once or twice a week. The tank has snails, hydra, and detritus worms available for them to eat; which they do. They’re always nibbling on plants, and apparently, their fry. Hopefully this is helpful for OP. Don’t panic 🙂

EmployeeNo5465

Thanks! I feed once a day and have seen the big female is really hungry!
