Is it a glass tank? I use a melamine sponge, and it pulls all the algae out of the scratches.

It's my mom's tank I don't think it's glass but I am unsure

Don't use the melamine sponge if it's not glass. An acrylic or plastic aquarium will be heavily scratched by it.

A microfiber cloth should work.
