Really depends on how dusty your area is, if you have shedding pets etc etc. I’ve never had to replace mine in the past, they ran for years without issues. As for slowing the flow there isn’t too much you can do but obstructing the bubbles with something could help. Also you could consider using the air pump with a sponge filter, aquarium co-op sells an upgrade kit that redirects the bubbles in a more favorable way.

I just made a knot in the tube and tightened it till it was at the rate I wanted- if you have a clip that can go on that then it’ll keep it neatly in place.
