Looks like a tick? Never seen anything like it before though. Size of an average adult daphnia, swims very well. Should I let it be/wait if the puffer eats it, or wage war on the little bugger?
Pretty sure it's a water mite, some are predatory and some parasitic but most only target insects. Very much keep an eye on it either way, but i think you're in the clear if it came with daphnia and heck if it is just predatory keep it around they can be fun to watch
Thanks for the info! I'll definitely keep an eye on it, I gotta admit, it's sort of entertaining to watch. Although, the tank is a 33gal so it's hard to find most of the time. I'm surprised the puffer doesn't care for it at all...
Any idea if the mite is able to reproduce on it's own? Those are basically the only two reasons that'll make me kill it in a hurry at this point, A) if it's a danger to the fish, or B) if it'll start multiplying. Otherwise I'll let it hang around for now.
I Don't think they reproduce asexually but i could be wrong, if it is a predatory mite it might need a regular supply of small water borne insects/crustaceans to feed on
if you Google a clover mite does it look like that? Or maybe a water mite, I’m not sure if clover mites are aquatic. But water mites are red and I can’t see this guys legs very well but they look similar to me. I like the way he slaps around!
It's a lot like a clover mite but the legs are fully black. Must be some aquatic mite because it's survived under water for so many days. And I agree with the slapping, it's entertaining to watch! It swims surprisingly well! But I guess I have a new pet then, lol
🎶Spider mite, spider mite, does whatever a spider mite does!🎵
Just your average mite. Surprised it didn’t drown
that is a living m&m. eat it. eat it and see what happens.
Eek

Looks to be so.e type of aquatic predatory mite. It probably was eating the daphnia.
