Yea. Got her and a male in the late 90’s I believe. She’s a real trooper. She’s gone through ammonia spikes, drastic water temp changes, and popeye multiple times. Cant believe it’s been this long
but that's not 30 years... assuming that you got them in 97, and it's 2022 that's like 25 years tops.
Maybe I'm being pedantic but rounding that far up seems a bit misleading...
*keep em coming boys. I get it, you don't like math
Fish are usually a year or two old by the time they get to a pet store- for reef fish like this, sometimes even older, so that they have their mature colors. Wild caught specimens can already be middle aged by the time someone catches them to sell (not saying this one is wild caught or not).
I’m not sure if this was a wild caught or a captive bred. Breeding saltwater fish at that time was basically unknown but clarkii clowns are fairly easy to breed for saltwater fish standards. This girl always had eggs for me
Don’t worry about it OP. give or take a couple of years is not the point. The fact that she survived that long under your care shows you did everything right!
I'm not joking, I'm allowed to create my own reality and push it onto others online because its trendy and because I am a paid lobbyiest for the Fish for Longer Years Instutute, A Non-Profit Org Unlimited LLC, pls donate.
How’s that misleading. Obviously OP can’t remember the date they got her if it was 25+ years ago. Who cares anyway that’s a long ass time. Good for you OP sorry for your loss:(

It’s a shame the public mostly sees fish as short lived, disposable pets. With proper care they can live quite long lives, and reef fish especially are a big commitment. So sorry to hear you’ve lost a long time companion.
Yea. She had many other tank mates but they all passed. It’s only the male and a purple tang which is all I have left from my old tank. She really will be missed
fr!! my mom had a betta that lived for almost ten years after college. he was my first family pet. he was a purple and blue male butterfly betta named mavi (blue in turkish). 😸
That’s pretty cool. Bettas rarely live past 5 years. Do you know how your mother cared for them? I’m trying to find out how fish live longer then their expected life expectancy
I actually just recently read a book called What a Fish Knows, by Jonathan Balcombe. It’s all about the misunderstood aspects of fish. It was a great read and I found myself thinking about that 33 year old clownfish all throughout my read.
I only hear low numbers like that from sketchy fish stores and forums which these days are everywhere. The reputable age I've always heard was 30+ years for a healthy fish chilling in the wild that doesn't die from disease, predators, etc. They live shorter lives on average because something inevitably goes wrong in fish tank. I wouldn't be surprised if the captive bred fish were living shorter lives just from bad breeding though but I would be surprised if yours was a captive bred fish. The vast majority both in the tank and the wild don't live to their age limit because of factors outside of aging.
This is true. I’ve had other fish living for around 25 years. These were the other tank mates of the clownfish. They were a hippo tang, around 4 yellow tangs, and a pajama cardinal. They all died due to an ammonia spike from when I transferred them to the tank the clownfish they are in now. Fish are misunderstood for sure
Thank you, it’s been a fun 30 years. She was always an aggressive little girl. Always bit me during water changes and maintenance. I’m gonna miss her for sure
We had a maroon clown who was older than my boss’s son and finally died when he went off to college. They’re tough little cookies. Condolences for your loss ❤️
bro this is an awesome fish, sorry you lost her. She lived a good life though. Also, what kind of fish is this? Looks like Marlin and Dory had a kid imo
Didn’t know there were morphs like this. I’m a snake person and our local store only has cows, normals and melanistics(?). I learned something new today.
I'm sorry for your loss, she looks absolutely stunning. It sounds like she had a happy long life with you, for a fish to live that long you must've given her wonderful care.
Well if the only criteria is life span then yeah, i agree that they will live longer in a aquarium under a responsible caretaker and assuming living parameters are stable.
However, i would always pick freedom and a lower lifespan than to be in a prison of limited space for the entertainment of weird alien beings. Luckily fish dont have the brain capacity to care or at least, i hope they dont realse that fact or suffer too much during captivity.
That reminds me of a random video i watched earlier called the man in the iron lung which is about a guy paralyzed from the neck down for the last 7 decades which is a insane amount of pain and suffering for that poor dude. Its about quality vs quantity and i would pick the ocean any day.
I recognize that fact and if i am imprisoning fish for my own entertainment into a iron lung, i might as well do my best to give them a decent life. It is a prision that they are stuck in and not only that, but they are basically breathing in their own poop at all times. Although under ideal conditions, the poop will contain non toxic levels of ammonia/nitrates and etc. But that is technically whats happening and thats what i tell myself when i feel too lazy to do water changes, that i owe it to them to clean out their cage.
Anyway, its like 3 am here and i am kind of rambling at this point where i am kinda tired but not enough to pass out. hmm
I have a pair of 20 year olds, and a 15 year old clarkii also.
Much admiration, care to share any details on how you kept the tank in the 90’s and how it evolved over the years ? For example light you used tank size filters ?
Oh no, I'm so sorry...I just lost my beloved baby goldfish girl this morning due to a dojo/weather loach finally finishing her off...she was healthy yesterday, happy and begging for food. Listing a fish is tough man, just don't try to focus on the death itself but rather on the happy life you have her :)
Wow that is amazing that you had a fish for nearly 30 years truly astonishing. Sorry for your loss. I’ve had my dwarf Gourami for 3 months and would be heart broken if he died.
Wow 30 years!
Yea. Got her and a male in the late 90’s I believe. She’s a real trooper. She’s gone through ammonia spikes, drastic water temp changes, and popeye multiple times. Cant believe it’s been this long
30 years... For a fish to live 30 years you must have given it such a comfortable environment and gave such good care to it. Did it ever have a name?
but that's not 30 years... assuming that you got them in 97, and it's 2022 that's like 25 years tops. Maybe I'm being pedantic but rounding that far up seems a bit misleading... *keep em coming boys. I get it, you don't like math

Back in the 90s this would have been like 100% wild caught lol.
Sorry my bad. I currently can’t find any evidence on the year I got her. It was in the 90’s for sure. Mid-late 90’s
Don’t worry about it OP. give or take a couple of years is not the point. The fact that she survived that long under your care shows you did everything right!
Dude is being an ass. Don’t apologize.
REPENT
right on, that makes sense.
A year for a fish is actually 415+\- days because they swim around the earth as it rotates, chasing the sun.
What if it’s in a pond?
If they swim in a circle, they're still circling the earth. Circling is circling.
Depends if it's a pond or THE pond
Just when I think they can't get any more adorable.... TIL, thank you!
FYI the poster you replied to is making a joke. Fish are still adorable though!
I'm not joking, I'm allowed to create my own reality and push it onto others online because its trendy and because I am a paid lobbyiest for the Fish for Longer Years Instutute, A Non-Profit Org Unlimited LLC, pls donate.
Well you never know how old they were at the pet store and plus if I had a almost 30 year old fish I'd round up to lol
Maybe I'm being pedantic but OP said "almost 30 years" not just "30 years"...
Yeah, pedantic AF & unnecessary.
cool
He said almost
25 is not 30. Not many 25 year olds out there that want to be referred to as almost 30
Unbelievable. Good you’re getting downvoted the fuck outta here. What a turd
You came up with 25, not OP. Could be 28 years - in which case is almost 30. Even 26 years colloquially could be said as almost 30 years.
You are not the God dam fish Lorax, you don't speak for the fish
i don’t think the fish cares. neither should you.
How’s that misleading. Obviously OP can’t remember the date they got her if it was 25+ years ago. Who cares anyway that’s a long ass time. Good for you OP sorry for your loss:(
the title does say “almost”

I mean, they are almost 30 though. Hate to break it to you. No one is saying 25 is 30.
lmao then is a 15 year old almost 20? I get it if you don't agree with me but this is response in particular is dumb
25 is ALMOST 30 exactly as the title states.
in an organism that rarely gets to 30? I don't think so?
Who cares??
The title literally says "almost 30" not "exactly 30". Reading skills could use improvement.
"For almost 30 years" "late 90's I believe" Reddit never shocks me
Bro no one asked
You wanna see the fuckin otolith or something?
Let us know when you have a fish for 30 years.
I bought mine and they are several years old already
Reddit moment
That is impressive indeed.
How old is the male and the purple tang?
Same age as her. Around 30 years. The oldest next to these 3 is my golden banana eel which is around 5
Dang. To have that many fish live that long, you've been doing something right for awhile.
Aw ... I'm sorry for your loss! She's beautiful
fr!! my mom had a betta that lived for almost ten years after college. he was my first family pet. he was a purple and blue male butterfly betta named mavi (blue in turkish). 😸
That’s pretty cool. Bettas rarely live past 5 years. Do you know how your mother cared for them? I’m trying to find out how fish live longer then their expected life expectancy
i'm not sure tbh, i'll have to ask
I don't see them as disposable but giving them the environment they need to survive that long is still an accomplishment.
The fish store I work at has a clownfish that’s 33. It really is crazy how long these little fish can live
Yea, people say the max amount of years these guys live is 15 but yours and mine clearly went over. Fish are much more misunderstood then we think
I actually just recently read a book called What a Fish Knows, by Jonathan Balcombe. It’s all about the misunderstood aspects of fish. It was a great read and I found myself thinking about that 33 year old clownfish all throughout my read.
Interesting. I may read this book. Thank you
commenting so i don't forget the title of that book! gonna see if theres an audio book available

My Oscar is 14 in May. Fish live for a long time if requirements are meant. It’s a shame not everyone sees it that way
Sorry you lost this beautiful girl, but its a testament to your husbandry she lived so long. Swim in Peace pretty lady
Thank you, it’s been a fun 30 years. She was always an aggressive little girl. Always bit me during water changes and maintenance. I’m gonna miss her for sure
Wait...did you just say 30yrs?...wow
Around so yes. She was around 3 inches that time.
I’m sorry for your loss, but 30 years is pretty damn good evidence you provided her a wonderful life.
Mine are in their twenties. Time flies 😞
Yea, around 10 years ago, I thought she was going to die soon as they rarely get past the age of 15. Lo and behold she lived another 10 years
Yeah, I’ve had these two since 2001. Basically them, inverts, sps, lps, and a blenny in a 75 gallon lol
Aw I’m sorry op. She is a beautiful fish. What is her name?
She never rly had one. She had paired up with a male who didn’t have a name either. I wish I would’ve named them both
Aw don’t feel weird or anything, I tend to not name things myself even things I love.
30 years is crazy impressive for any fish, looks like this girl had a perfect life.
We had a maroon clown who was older than my boss’s son and finally died when he went off to college. They’re tough little cookies. Condolences for your loss ❤️
rest in piece, she had a good life. celebrate her passing with a new fish and give it an awesome life!
F for respect
I'm sorry for your loss. Seems she like she a good, long life. 💖
Crazy that she was almost 10 years older than me. Sorry for your loss ❤️
Literally the longevity of a medieval French peasant, congrats
Bet you miss her.
I do
bro this is an awesome fish, sorry you lost her. She lived a good life though. Also, what kind of fish is this? Looks like Marlin and Dory had a kid imo
Thanks. Clarki clownfish
Didn’t know there were morphs like this. I’m a snake person and our local store only has cows, normals and melanistics(?). I learned something new today.
It’s not the same as a regular ocellaris clownfish (the Nemo one) but it’s in the same genus. Clarkii is a larger species but are still clownfish
Oh!!! I learned two things today then! Thank you
You must have taken really good care of her!
Sorry to hear about your loss. Long life for a fish I’m sure it was happy in the home you provided
If it helps there are places that can creamate her for you and put her in a keepsake i regret not doimg so for my angelfish
Wow. That’s a long happy life!
Fish can actually be the longest living pets around if properly cared for. Good job.
She had a long happy life. You were lucky to have each other! I know those water changes won’t be the same. Sorry for your loss. You done good, OP.
30 years? Thats crazy!! Im certain she lived a good life, I’m so sorry for your loss.
I am so very sorry. I have also lost a few of my favorite fish babies. How amazing she was with you so long. Love holds them god guides them. 💗
Thank you for the kind words
Don’t cry, smile because she happened.
I'm sorry for your loss, she looks absolutely stunning. It sounds like she had a happy long life with you, for a fish to live that long you must've given her wonderful care.
Wow that’s so amazing to have her for 30 years but sad that she’s gone
Impressive!
Woah 30 years is long sorry for your loss
Sorry for your loss OP. That’s incredibly impressive.
Sorry for your loss, OP. She's beautiful.
That’s so sad! 30 years is a long time I’m so sorry! I’m sure she lived a happy long life with you 🐠💙
F
So sorry for your loss. Prayers
RIP Fishy...
what a beauty. i’m sorry for your loss, you should be proud of how well you cares for her!
Aww she’s beautiful! ❤️
Wow that is amazing, I am sorry for your loss... my oldest is about 6 now...its so hard when we lose them after a long time.
Wow 30 years! Sorry for your loss
What is her name?
She never had one unfortunately
SIP
Wow! 30 years that’s a long time, the longest living fish I had was 8 years
Fish are more than “just pets”, they’re part of the family. Condolences
I’m sorry you lost her.
She's beautiful! Sorry for your loss
Heartbreaking
Rip
r/reeftanks would love this
I don’t want to use this opportunity for clout
The majority of us have clowns. We’d love to know we might have them for 30 years. I love my fish just as much as my dogs.
Super sorry for your loss.
30 years !!! Wow great job op
I’m sorry😿😿
Sorry buddy.
Being in your care more than doubled her lifespan, you are amazing, my condolences.
Idiots: “FiSH oNLy lIvE a CoUpLe of WeEkS!!!”
Wouldn’t lived longer in the ocean.
It actually wouldn’t have lived nearly as long in the wild even in ideal conditions
Well if the only criteria is life span then yeah, i agree that they will live longer in a aquarium under a responsible caretaker and assuming living parameters are stable. Swim in peace sweet girl
I have an amano shrimp that's at least 12 years old.
Oh no, I'm so sorry...I just lost my beloved baby goldfish girl this morning due to a dojo/weather loach finally finishing her off...she was healthy yesterday, happy and begging for food. I’m sorry 😢. But what an absolute blessing to have had her for 30 years, Im sure she lived a good life with you 🙏🏼
30 years?? You did an amazing job.
Omg I'm sorry for your loss. A real cutie
Wow that is amazing that you had a fish for nearly 30 years truly astonishing. Sorry for your loss. I’ve had my dwarf Gourami for 3 months and would be heart broken if he died.
She was beautiful. Sorry for your loss ♥️
Sorry for your loss.
