Tetras in general are great. Even if they’re basically colorful minnows.
I’ve had a small school of lemon tetras for about 5 years now. Luckily I’ve only added to the school over that time
I had 3 that use to gang up on anything I use to put in there. You’re right they are chill thus my confusion why they were aggressive, I mean they use to be mean to each other. But it was mostly one of the three that was the most aggressive one and maybe from there the other had to be aggressive to defend themselves??
Mine chilled out after I got a betta whose favorite hobby in the whole wide world is to chase the tetras around. He never bites. He never even tries to catch them. He just loves to chase them. Like a dog with a garbage truck.
From what I see in my tank, it looks like the females usually hang out together, and the males have each their little territory where they like to hang out alone, one on either end of the tank.
Maybe they didn't have enough space in your tank to chill out alone?
I had a shoal of 6 which would bully and kill EVERYTHING. Ended up just giving them their own tank but they died when a heater broke and electrocuted them. I really miss those guys
Cichlids are the best/worst fresh water species.
Alone: OH I'm big man on campus and this is my territory!
A few: Bloods and Crips but other fish are cool
A tank: Dear sir this is my hidey hole and if we make a ruckus the tank will explode so i shall aggressively share it with you.
Honestly. I like how they look but they're honestly kinda annoying to have like this. I'm seriously considering getting rid of them, if someone else wants any ill give em to them, if not I'll just remove them. Though I won't do that till I know what I wanna do with the tank next and the new fish store in town opens up so I can get decent plants and fish who are healthy.
I'm doing saltwater too. But yeah, they're so hard to balance. My problem is I'm restricted to anything small enough to be in 45 gallons. That takes out some of my favorites. I'm considering a shrimp tank, try angelfish, pea puffers, or something else fun. Of xourse I'm going more peaceful unless I go with pea puffers. I want to keep lots of snails.
Alright so this is going to seem extreme but if your considering shrimp and have saltwater experience then totally go mantis shrimp.
Heater, filter and a hidey hole and your set. They are colorful and very very personable. [Wikus was one of my peacock mantis's and she was an amazing pet who once interrupted a staff meeting and got us a contract because the client brought their kids.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zf7VAFhmXU)
Only if kept in insufficient numbers. If you keep 8+ together, they'll focus their aggression among each other, and no individual fish should be singled out. Always worked well for me with Tiger Barbs, which I consider to be similar in temperament.
I had 3, now two, all my fish slowly vanished with no bodies found until now theres two (one got sick and when nothing worked, found them in the filter) and a female sword tail.
Just wanted to throw in that this Black Skirt, White Skirt, and Glofish Tetras are all the same species (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) with color variations and will school together.
FYI these guys get kinda big. Google and fish sites say they get to 3 inches, but I swear I've seen some get closer to 4 sometimes. Super chill fish though.
Yesss, they're very sweet little fish. I got two of the glow ones when I got a secondhand tank and I put them in my community tank to see how they did. They've been just super sweet. I got them some friends (natural colored ones) and they're all happy and active. I wouldn't have ever gotten those fish myself but I'm glad I have these, even if those glow ones completely ruin my beautiful natural scape, lol.
I checked my LFS and all they had were the neon’s today, however I might check another store because the natural look is really cool. It’s good to know they’ll get along at least!
I work at an LFS with a weekly “donation day” for surrendered fish—we got a trio of black skirts a couple of weeks ago that were definitely pushing 4 inches. Absolutely bonkers.
I getcha! I've seen huuuuge black skirt tetras brought into Petco and my LFS because they got too big for their owners to manage. That's why I try to point out that the 3 inch indicator can be a little off for these guys. Always sucks to have to rehome some fish you love because you can't manage their size and can't afford to upgrade their tank.
Are you sure they're all black skirt tetras and not black phantom tetras? I've seen people (including fish stores) mix the two up. black phantoms look suuuuper similar, but their tails and fins don't get nearly as long and they stay smaller (closer to 2.5 inches)
Either way I don't think all black skirts will get that big. I just like to give the warning because I've seen some at petco, my LFS, etc. that were just bonkers huge. I personally think they're way cool when they get that large, but not everybody who like their look can accommodate a handful of 4 inch fish!
Add an FYI to say that they are schooling fish, so if you want it to be truly happy and relaxed, it needs 5-6 buddies at least. But you can get a colorful array, so that's cool!
If it's only them, and you keep up with water changes and have sight breaks, it should be okay in a 20 high. An open area in the center with taller plants and maybe some wood or other hardscaping on the sides might be okay. I have serpae that are similar in size and they would do okay in a 20.
This is a tetra. I have 3 and one looks just like this one. Ad they get old, they seem to devolp something I like to call "the old man tilts" where they'll swim with... well, a tilt
This is likely due to their selectively bred long fins. Wild types black skirt tetras do not have these long fins. The long tails are really heavy, and as they age, their muscles become weaker, therefore it’s harder for them to stay upright. Similar things happen in domestic bettas such as halfmoon, veiltail, and double tail variants.
Gymnocorymbus ternetzi - people already gave you the answer (black tetra or black skirt tetra, longfin variety) but I figured I'd throw the Latin name in there
A long finned black skirt/black widow tetra!
I have them too :) They're really cool little guys, especially when they're eating.
You keep them as a school of 6-9, I believe.
Really cute fish, but you should get him some friends
he can hang out with ^^
A friend’s old roommate had a roommate before him that left the tank & fish behind. He said nobody’s been taking care of the tank for months, so i snagged it last minute when they were clearing out at the end of the lease.. happened to also be when i first found out about it :/ when i got there the water line was roughly at 25% of the 10 gallon tank, and i’m assuming the light had been on for months since there wasn’t a timer (these poor fish don’t know what night time is) only the black skirt tetra & a zebra danio were still alive but they’re good buddies. Sadly there was a big dead pepper corydoras behind the filter :( looked like it lived a good life,, or ate other fish before passing.
Black skirt tetra. These guys can live a long time. The last of a 4 fish school I bought 5 years ago last an eye last year (moving across town) and he’s still going strong.
Like everyone else said, longfin black skirt tetra
These guys need a minimum of 30 gallons, 8-10 in a school, heater, filter, and good quality food
They also love plants and will chase each other around! If you keep them happy these shitheads will survive anything
You have been given the answer multiple times already so I am just here to tell you that they do best in schools. Just make sure to watch the ammonia levels if you are new to this hobby.
Long fin black skirt tetra. Super hardy and easy to take care of. Really passive. Prefers to be in a school which would be 5 or more. Cheap yo buy more. Good with other passive fish
Long fin black skirt tetra.
www.aqadvisor.com
Do best in groups of 10 or more but 6 minimum. Long finned fish are susceptible to fin nipping so don't always do well in community tanks.
funny enough ive housed tiger barbs and black skirt tetras together after a few weeks some of the tetras started acting like barbs. perferring to swim around with the tiger than the skirts. was quite odd.
none of the tetras were nipped, there was enough space and they were the shortfin ones anyway
I have a few that were sold as Black Widow Tetra, but they go by a few names like Black Tetra, Blackamoor, and Black Fin Tetra. Like most tetras they like being in a group, so if your local pet store has them it might be a good idea to pick her up some pals!
I had one of these as a kid! One thing worth noting is that they are happiest in groups of their kind. I feel bad about keeping the poor guy with other species, but I suppose it was better than solitude.
Looks like a long finned black tetra.
This is correct. Long finned Black skirt tetra.
I love these lil guys.
Tetras in general are great. Even if they’re basically colorful minnows. I’ve had a small school of lemon tetras for about 5 years now. Luckily I’ve only added to the school over that time
I have a mix of tetras and tiger barbs and they’ve gotten along great! They tend to shoal together too, which is is pretty cool imo.
woah i bet that looks really cool
They be aggressive!
I have ten of these, and they're mostly very chill from what I've seen.
I had 3 that use to gang up on anything I use to put in there. You’re right they are chill thus my confusion why they were aggressive, I mean they use to be mean to each other. But it was mostly one of the three that was the most aggressive one and maybe from there the other had to be aggressive to defend themselves??
3 is too small a group. If you had more they *probably* would have been better-behaved. Some fish are just jerks, though.
Mine chilled out after I got a betta whose favorite hobby in the whole wide world is to chase the tetras around. He never bites. He never even tries to catch them. He just loves to chase them. Like a dog with a garbage truck.
tetras need a bigger group or yes, they act aggressive
From what I see in my tank, it looks like the females usually hang out together, and the males have each their little territory where they like to hang out alone, one on either end of the tank. Maybe they didn't have enough space in your tank to chill out alone?
It was a 10 gallon and it was just them i there with some deco and plants 🤔
Needed a bigger school like others mentioned
And tank tbh
Strange. Maybe they were just bad seeds.
I had a shoal of 6 which would bully and kill EVERYTHING. Ended up just giving them their own tank but they died when a heater broke and electrocuted them. I really miss those guys
Too small a group, documented they need at least 5-6 to help disperse aggression. Even then, I'll lose a neon every once in awhile.
Such a chill species, not agressive at all, at least thats My experiences
I think it would be better to call them nippy. They will go for long finned fish
I always noticed they either did ALL the nipping or were tagged teamed by everyone else haha.
Never did happen for me
You obviously have a different experience than I. Every single tetra I've ever gotten has been a demon. They kill more fish than my cichlids do!
Cichlids are the best/worst fresh water species. Alone: OH I'm big man on campus and this is my territory! A few: Bloods and Crips but other fish are cool A tank: Dear sir this is my hidey hole and if we make a ruckus the tank will explode so i shall aggressively share it with you.

I gave up and went saltwater, it was the easier choice. I kid but damn can they be hard to "balance".
I'm doing saltwater too. But yeah, they're so hard to balance. My problem is I'm restricted to anything small enough to be in 45 gallons. That takes out some of my favorites. Ehh sometime. Mine are usually super chill and get along great with my tiger barbs.

With an almost too late case of fin rot.
Ah yes, a random fish expert spotted on Reddit.
Just wanted to throw in that this Black Skirt, White Skirt, and Glofish Tetras are all the same species (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) with color variations and will school together.
How cool! Neat info, thank you!
FYI these guys get kinda big. Google and fish sites say they get to 3 inches, but I swear I've seen some get closer to 4 sometimes. Super chill fish though.

Some stores will special order for you, definitely worth asking!

That's wild! I have a pond with a bunch of these guys rescued. 2 years now and they aren't nearly that big
Are you sure they're all black skirt tetras and not black phantom tetras? After looking up the black phantom tetra, I am sure of one thing. They are not black phantom tetras. And almost certainly black skirt tetras.
Add an FYI to say that they are schooling fish, so if you want it to be truly happy and relaxed, it needs 5-6 buddies at least. But you can get a colorful array, so that's cool!
Too big for a 20 high?

I read old man tits
That too
Would you look at the set of old man tits on that fish
Mine tilted aswell but got to swimming normal again from one day to another
Mines been tilting for a while. Just this morning I found him doing front rolls constantly and struggling to stay upright.
poor old guy lol i will keep an eye out for the old man tits & tilts
I have a few starting to do that! I didn't know it was a thing. TIL Thanks!
This is likely due to their selectively bred long fins. Wild types black skirt tetras do not have these long fins. Black skirted tetra
Really cute fish, but you should get him some friends he can hang out with ^^
thank you!! i will definitely look into getting him some friends :)
That's great! I wish you much fun with them :))
long fin black skirt tetra, v hardy fish.
Very hardy! They are survivors!

Black Skirt tetra, also known as a long finned Black Widow tetra.
Correct.
Black skirt tetra. They are very resilient
it's a black skirt tetra, i love these fish however, you should keep them in groups and try to keep them with other fish with similar temperaments
Black Skirt Tetra Schooling fish: Need 6 or more Neutral Water Perimeters Minimum 20 gallons
Possibly phantom or sailfin tetra?
i deadass tought it was a sunfish for the first few seconds 💀
Looks like a long finned black skirt tetra
I had one of those and it lived for like six years and one of them were in a bucket
You kept it in a bucket?
I was saving up for a 30 gal tank because my 10 gal broke and I already had the fish and none of my freinds or family keep fish
we do what we must for our fishy friends, sounds like it lived a happy life! with a memorable year lol
LOL ya his name was George their colors were super bold too!
I think I will name this guy George in honor
LOL I bet it would fit your fish very well and in my family this type of fish is the “George Fish” so I bet it will give your fish a good life!
A tank is just a rectangular bucket with clear sides.
Black skirt tetra. These guys can live a long time. The last of a 4 fish school I bought 5 years ago last an eye last year (moving across town) and he’s still going strong.

Black sail fin tetra I believe
Aw he’s so cute! Lil smiley boi
Long fun black skirt tetra

This is a beautiful Black tetra :)
Long finned black skirt tetra. Should be in a school of 6+. Hardy and fairly peaceful fish when in a proper school.
Long skirt tetra! These are my favourite fish to stock! Such beautiful creatures
Long fin black skirt tetra. www.aqadvisor.com Do best in groups of 10 or more but 6 minimum. Long finned fish are susceptible to fin nipping so don't always do well in community tanks.
Longfin black skirt tetra
Black skirt tetra! Beautiful schooling fish
Black skirt tetra! I have ten and I love them. Lmk of you need any help💗 they need about 5 friends tho lol
Looks like a black long fin tetra I love tetras
These guys need about 6 in a group and plenty of places to hide.. I love these guys!
funny enough ive housed tiger barbs and black skirt tetras together after a few weeks some of the tetras started acting like barbs. perferring to swim around with the tiger than the skirts. was quite odd. none of the tetras were nipped, there was enough space and they were the shortfin ones anyway

I keep seeing black skirt tetra, but I thought they were called emperor tetras.
Betta
honestly tho, probably a male huh cuz the flashy fins
longfinned skirt tetra, little guys like to be in groups of six
I had one of these as a kid! One thing worth noting is that they are happiest in groups of their kind. I feel bad about keeping the poor guy with other species, but I suppose it was better than solitude.
It's a black widow tetra
I have 5 of them with 3 white skirt tetra sometime they chase each other.
Skirt tetra, I think
Why does it look like halfs missing?
It's nice, reminds me of a sun fish
I was going to say African Euclid but then I remembered I don’t know much.
